    HALLELUJAH!!!!! DON GIOVANNI! A CENAR TECO... THE WAY IT'S SUPPOSED TO SOUND! Thank YOU, GWYNNE HOWELL!!!!! THOMAS ALLEN... I'm speechless! A monumental Don Giovanni! Leporello, Stafford Dean? AMAZING!

    • @wildh0rse1
      @wildh0rse1 9 лет назад +2

      Marcooljerk LOL Did you see how tired poor leporello was in the last scene? An astoundingly good performance. Again BIG kudos to Colin Davis and the Orchestra. They performed the overture just right too., perfect. Note the score where Donna Elvira runs up the steps and shrieks, that same exact motif appears early in the next scene when Lepeorello is trying to tell what happend. Just caught that today, reading the score.... all I can say is if Mozart had lived even until Beethovens age, he would have advanced opera 75 years. xD

    A treat to see Joan Rodgers, a wonderful Mozartean with a clear, ringing soprano and beautiful, expressive voice. She is featured on Barenboim's impressive second round of the Mozart Da Ponte operas, worth searching for, especially the Cosi and Figaro.

  • @wildh0rse1
    @wildh0rse1 9 лет назад +10

    The music, the music, its just too much, its just unstoppable, Mozart said composing was like a little engine inside him that wouldn't stop. Holy crap, almost three hours of it, you just don't want it to stop...
    The "commendatore" sceme is worth sitting through all that Recetitivo (recetitivi?? LOL) but the arias are just one after the other, masterful.
    Written in WAM's later years, it shows a maturity of style and I'm bound to say, shades of what would become his last works, including the original sections of the requiem. I'll go further and state that had he lived, he would have been on the same tack as Beethoven took, but we'll never know, sadly.
    Kiri is great as are all others. And BIG hats off to the boys in the orchestra!!! WONDERFUL rendition of the score. The opening of the Commendatore scene is played with the proper "fortissimo" accents. and real punchy ones throughout the scene.
    Only complaint is lousy sound, overmodding Kiri's voice made my cat chew through the window screen to get out :)

    • @wildh0rse1
      @wildh0rse1 9 лет назад +1

      wildh0rse1 Follow up, I cannot find this score conducted as well anywhere else. This includes all the other 'famous' conductors', especially Furtwangler, whose rendition and overall performance isnt, well, strong. That was an older production though, and tastes change. Well he's dead ayway, dead as Mozart himself lol. A good energetic conductor always shreds Mozart, as long as too many liberties with tempo are not taken, which they almost always are.

      wildh0rse1 Beethoven’s track? I dunno. He’d have probably taken his own revolutionary track. What’s sure is that Beethoven made his first trip to Vienna to study w Mozart, but was recalled almost immediately, before the lessons even began, due to his father’s illness. Later, when he returned to Vienna, he studied w Haydn, not at all like Mozart, tho’ he & Wolfgang shared the classical music period style. Both great, but even Haydn thought (& declared) that Mozart was the greatest composer in the world.

    Loved the performance. I was fortunate to see a Don Giovanni in San Francisco, with Tomowa-Sintow, Winbergh, and the Leporello of Stafford Dean. In terms of his resonant baritone and comic acting, Dean is my favorite of all the fine Leporellos.

    Thomas Allen was born for the Don and I was lucky enough to see him do it a few times. Colin Davis was the go-to Mozart conductor of the time. I have to agree with the poster who mentioned the poor sound, though. I'm not a hi-fi snob who expects audiophile sound, least of all through my laptop, but the women's voices distort so much that I have yet to get to the end of this without giving up. I don't want to appear ungrateful for the upload, so many thanks for this all the same.

This was supposed to be a "Commonwealth" Giovanni (if you notice, every single artist is British either by birth of is a crown subject politically) but Dam Margaret cancelled the day of and a substitute was brought in at the last minute. She did herself proud with no rehearsal.

      +Jacqueline Chauser - I think the name of the aria you are looking for is "Protegga il Giusto Cielo". In case you want a complete listing of every song look for the audio recording "Mozart/Don Giovanni, K.527/Harnoncourt" here on You Tube. Click "Show More" and you will see each song, who sings it and the exact time it takes place. I hope this helps. I think that if I could only have one opera to listen to, Don Giovanni would be it. But that would be a horrible fate, just having one.

      she took over Donna Anna much later, 1975 in Barcelona:

      @@Bumblebeebeebee This elvira is vocally inefficient and does NOT meet the vocal requirements to sing the role. It's a muffled tone, bad and ugly white sounds in the middle voice, and there's no chest voice in it. Elvira is a woman of pure chaste and virtue (to a fault) and must be vocally matched with a solid and sound technique, which, Kiri doesn't/never had.

      Madana Bhat-Khandige Joan in 1988? Lol. I'd rather not. She sang some wonderful Donna Anna's in the 70's with Julia Varady as Donna Elvira. Bye 1980 the voice was very tired and by 88 she was definitely on her last legs.

      Stop complaining about this recording, and go and find another recording with Montserrat as Elvira.

    I can't stand Ottavio, such a weakling, in voice and character.
