I doubt that in the thousands and thousands of performance of Figaro over more than two centuries, theer has EVER been a better cast of the three principal ladies than Te Kanawa, Cotrubas and von Stade. When I first saw this performance, 40 years ago now, it put a fire that has never gone out under my love of opera.

It may be old-fashioned and non-realistic but I absolutely adore the posed tableaux that the characters are constantly forming that both highlight the relationships and conflicts and just look damned beautiful. Act II in particular is one exquisite tableau after another. Oh wow, I just saw that it was directed by Peter Hall - no wonder he's considered one of Britain's greatest theatre directors.

As a kid in the 70s, my school took us to 2 "kid" operas at the LA Shrine auditorium--abbreviated versions of The Magic Flute and Hansel and Gretl. I was hooked. My first "adult" opera was the SFOpera Marriage of Figaro in the mid-80s with Dame Kiri TeKanawa. To this day, that shines as the best production I've seen of my favorite opera. She was sublime and the reason I went back to see Capriccio a few years later. This is heaven! Thank you Dame Kiri.

This is the best Figaro ever, which I had the privilege to see, and many, many revivals with excellent casts. All other productions never ever came close, a true Gyndebourne classic. A stella cast including Frederica von Stade, Kiri of course , seedy John Fraytt. Peter Halls production was so tight and intimate, so very intense. It is a joy to relive the performance, it lives up to my happy memories.

That’s always been one of my favorite numbers too. That was possibly the librettist’s crowning achievement over a long lifetime of writing, those four lines. There he lets his old Jewish tradition shine through (the tradition calls for the sinner, in this case the Count, to seek forgiveness from his victim with three genuine apologies, and for the victim to forgive, emulating God’s forgiveness. Mozart in the music takes it a step further - Rosina forgives not only her husband, but everyone listening.)

    • @rhcb1
      @rhcb1 Год назад

It did not last. Before the year was out,
The Count was once again a slave to women,
The Countess had a child by Cherubino,
      Susanna was untrue to Figaro,
Young gallants went to bed with Barbarina.
But for a moment, till the music faded,
They were all ravished by a glimpse of heaven,
Where everything is known and yet forgiven,
And all that is not music is pure silence.

The noted music critic, the late J. B. Steane, in his 1983 Gramaphone review of the 1982 Decca Records' production* of "Figaro" (the "stellar" cast included Te Kanawa, Popp, von Stade, Samuel Ramey, Thomas Allen, Kurt Moll, et al., with Sir George Solti conducting the London Philharmonic), wrote that "never, in all his many years of opera-going, had he heard a Countess as good as Kiri Te Kanawa's."
    Case closed.

Beaumarchais' play was an attack on the vestiges of Feudalism, and aristocracy in France [and most of Europe], a political play if ever there was one. When Mozart adapted it for the opera it become about women, and 'Voi che sapete' is Mozart's anthem. The cast assembled for this production was well chosen for Mozart's purpose. The time when opera was a parade of voices was passed and opera required acting as well. This production gave us acting. splendid voices, comedy, pathos, spectacle and costumes. It was all here. Kiri te Kanawa touches the heart with 'porgi amor' and Maria von Stade provided the authentic voice of Mozart and every man who finds women enchanting. It is not a sexual matter but spiritual and Psychological. What a production that renders the plenitude of Mozart's vision.

I think she just started singing this role maybe around 1972. But can't argue that this is one of her signature roles and she excels at the pure lyricism in the part, as opposed to her Tosca which was more or less a caricature.

The beauty of this production for me is in the intimacy of the Glyndebourne space, and thus the music making. The balance is excellent and the musical gestures are made with such clarity and elegance by the entire ensemble in a way that can be really be lost in a large theater like the Met. Also, every role is casted from strength; What a pleasure to hear them in this intimate setting! I think this is the performance that put Von Stade and Te Kanawa on the map to such an extent that Covent Garden revived the opera for them after this production.

Opera meravigliosa, Mozart cantato in maniera sublime e messa in scena maestosa.

Lovely clear precise singing. And I think this is one of the two best operas ever written.
The other is also by Mozart :-)

Sophie -Grace Right- "Don Giovanni" is the other. Pa pa pa .....Papa! Il Commendatore, right? xD
I kind of agree with the guy in Amadeus when he said Italian was the only proper language for opera.

Giuseppe Sarti. The greatest success, they say, was his opera "Fra i due litiganti il terzo gode" 1782. (dramma giocoso, Libretto Le nozze di Carlo Goldoni, Prima rappr. 14 settembre 1782, Teatro Teatro alla Scala di Milano) - Later I pretendenti delusi (1782, Venice); Le nozze di Dorina (1784, Naples); And pretenders delus (1784, London); Dorina contrastata( Paris). Of course Mozar followed all that - he inserted the of the aria "E viva i litiganti!" into the final banquet of his "Don Giovanni"; even in its variations (K. 460). And most importantly, for the history of music and ideas: the complicated finale of the first act of Sarti's opera also served as a model for the finale of the last act of Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro. Unfortunately, there is no Sarti opera on the Internet.

I can't express how much I love this production and the flawless performances, both musical and dramatic, by this incomparable cast (in particular the delightful Cotrubas and Te Kanawa at her most sublime) but there's one glaring fault that annoys me due to its internal incoherence: at the very end, the Countess should _not_ reappear wearing her own outfit; she should still be wearing Susanna's outfit. After all, the Count only realises that his shameless behaviour has been exposed and that he was in fact wooing the Countess _upon_ _seeing_ _her_ _in_ _Susanna's_ _outfit_ which means that she is fully aware of his attempted seduction of Susanna, thus causing his contrition and change of heart (whether this is believable or not, in such an inveterate philanderer, is another matter) (o; I can only imagine that Te Kanawa preferred to appear in the finer outfit for the dénouement and curtain calls, or perhaps the director wanted a more glamorous final appearance for his star soprano; either of these reasons is understandable but nonetheless this costume change does a disservice to this otherwise exquisite performance.

The Count is smarter that Don Giovanni...at least he outwardly showed contrition. Otherwise the earth might open up for him I suppose.

Delicious production. My preference is for Mrs Cotrubas, whose excellent emission makes her beautiful voice always audible and clear. I have the impression that Mrs Te Kanawa's delicacy, as visually delightful as it is, sometimes makes her voice less well projected and so sometimes even inaudible.
