Same problem with a different source...check your Free Hub! With about 4,500 kilometers of use I got the same noise and followed the process including sending video/audio clip to tech support. They concurred and sent the removal tool at no cost. I removed the flywheel and while I didn't find anything that seemed to be causing the problem I cleaned it well, lubed the hub, and reassembled. The noise was gone. For a little while. When it returned I once again began to pull the flywheel but got no further than the free hub which was completely fried. The inner race came out in pieces spilling badly worn bearings on the floor. The bottom line is that I was initially so focused on the novelty of a problem internal to the trainer that I didn't closely inspect the free hub in the first place. I might have caught it the first time around. Apparently the noise/vibration travels on the axel spindle to the flywheel and creates a noise identical to foreign material inside. Garmin sent a new free hub at no cost. Problem solved.
Shane, I just bought the Neo yesterday & only set it up tonight. Took a bit of time to setup & update the firmware. After I put the cassette in the first time, I thought of your video & decided to check the bolts holding the plate in place. Good thing I did check because one was very loose and is about the same level as the center plate. When its tight, the top edge of the bolt should be half way down the height of the center plate. Another was just a bit loose & the rest were tight. I have a picture of the bolts but I can't attach it here. Also, one of the bolts on the other side was also loose. So, for anyone who just got their Neo, check the bolts on both sides on the metal plate. I've only did a short Zwift test & it seems to be working fine. I'll do a workout tomorrow & see how it goes 😁 (Hills is going to be painful now coming from a fluid 'dumb turbo' trainer 😖)
Crikey! That's worth shooting the link to Tacx Support just as a heads up (include your Neo serial # and place of purchase). They should be able to follow up the QC on that unit.
Just got my Neo and it had the noise right out of the box. Quite a shame with such a high priced product, let's see how fast the customer service will hook me up with a tool. Thanks for the video, I watched it even before buying a Neo and it probably saved me a lot of anger figuring out the problem and how to solve it!
Man, remember I asked you about what would you do if you got an unbalanced trainer some weeks ago and you said you'd send it back? It happened! LOL. Glad it was just a quick fix for you. Keep riding!
New out of the box I'd boot it back out the door for sure. The Neo is an interesting beast, as the flywheel is pretty light on and won't shake like other trainers with much larger flywheels (should they become unbalanced). Let's see how this holds up in the coming weeks/months.
Great video. Just got a 2T and had the same problem. Solution was the same - extra the flywheel, didn't see any particles but did see slight scoring on a few of the magnets, reinstalled the flywheel and voila!
I think if it happens again just try changing the torque on the securing bolts, they may have been pulling it out of square. Another thing to check would be the condition of the bearing. A lot of OEMs insist on using the cheapest, crappiest bearings available to save some money.
Great video, although I'd rather not have to service a £1000 trainer after a few months. I know you're a high mileage rider, but most of us would hope to get years of use rather than worrying when it's going to break/need service. Great to see the inside and how the magnets/flywheel are arranged. That said, I wouldn't have been able to hear that noise in my Kickr.....It's only because the Neo is so quiet!
I bought one in 2015 when they came out , and when freewheeling it was horrendously loud ! i had to open it up and grease the freehub , and that was it.
READ THIS BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT TO OPEN YOUR NEO This video was very helpful. What's interesting to know is that the flywheel rests on the bearings but is only maintained sideways by the neodymium magnets! Their force is what you need to overcome by using the tool. The 6 screws that are apparent on the flywheel are used to fix the big bearing to the flywheel. They are not what keeps the flywheel to the base of the neo. FOR THE LOVE OF YOUR CYCLING GOD DO NOT UNSCREW the 6 screws! Leave 3 of them attached as Shane did in the video! If you unscrew the 6, the big bearing will come loose and will need to be re-fixed to the flywheel. If the big bearing is not exactly aligned to the flywheel, it can cause the flywheel to be ever so slightly tilted, which will cause rubbing because of the tight tolerances. HOWEVER, if you have an unexplained persistant rubbing, it might be because the big bearing and the flywheel are not perfectly aligned anymore, and in that case it could be a good idea to unscrew the 6 screws and re-align the big bearings to the flywheel.
Sometimes you just take something apart and put it back together and it works right again. This has happened with many a Bottom bracket of mine... I'll hear a weird noise or something and then I'll take it all apart looking for the problem and never find it, give up, put it all back together and somehow there's no longer a sound.
I've been using my NEO for 30 months and +8,000km and today I started hearing the noise during my ride. I've logged a call with TACX support, I hope to get some good news from them soon.
TACX support have contacted me and asked me to do some tests and provide them with some footage. Here's a video of the problem: ruclips.net/video/JvmeQHkoIEQ/видео.html
2nd! I've heard that same sound from a small electric motor that I used to have. its just the rotor contacting the stater. In the case of the motor, the sound was caused by an impact on the driveshaft, so my guess is that the "flywheel" (whats the technical term) received a knock at some point.
So it’s the a trainer’s version of “ sir, did you try unplugging it for 30 seconds and plugging it back in?” . My guess is that the main nut lost a little tightness/torque and allowed for just enough wobbling to cause the noise.
Mine is making the same grinding sound. It is not constant, actually was more pronounced after just arriving, but it is still there. I might buy this tool and give it a try as well. I also had a hard time to get 11 speed shimano noiseless, it seemed at first that something was missalinged or even crooked.
Same here. Just got one last week and finally put on a cassette and bike. It's making this noise without having pedaled once :(. At least it looks like no big issue, but shouldn't be there on a brand new one.
Just received a new Tacx Neo 2 trainer and it made the same noise immediately after plugging it in for the first time. My LBS will swap it out for another unit tomorrow, hmmm.
Maybe the wheel got slightly out of true through the 'Road Feel' function. I don't know how that works exactly but that was the first thing in my mind when I saw this.
I received the extractor tool. Didn’t find anything inside but wiped it out as you did and then reassembled. My trainer is now dead quiet. Thanks again!
Today, I just opened my tacx neo 2t that I received this last tuesday from Planet Cyclery (11/12/2019) and a grinding noise is coming from inside the trainer when you turn the free wheel plate. You can not imagine how upset I’m right now. It sounds like something is loose or broken inside. This is a BRAND NEW ITEM and I didn’t even have a chance to put the bike on it. WHO CHECKS THE TRAINER BEFORE PACKING THE ITEM? HOW CAN SOMEONE LET THIS HAPPENING OR NOT NOTICING IT? THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE! I immediately searched online and it took me 5 seconds to find you Shane with this exact same issue. However mine is “supposed" to be brand new with no miles on it. Please guys, make sur nobody else is posting the same related problem and start looking for an another trainer until this issue is fixed directly from the manufacturer. I'm not here to waste my money and time waiting for a plate extractor and do the job myself on a brand new item. This is RIDICULOUS!
I had the same noise fot 2T out of the box, but after 3 rides went away . I dont know, maybe because i did secure more tight QR axle, becase there was a freeplay in the axle before.
At minute 4:55 - where exactly do you put grease on it, on the inner spindel too? Does the grease also belong on the place where the ball bearing is located? Is it even grease or is it something else?
Hello there. I don't get the grinding nose like you had but I do get some very bad vibrations through the pedals. Looking at the plate spinning once you'd re-assembled it, I'm very surprised but the level of the radial run out on the plate. It's quite bad and made me think I need to pull the plate off on mine!
Hi Shane. From an energy point of view, where does the power generated by the user goes in the Tacx Neo. Is it burnt in a resistor? I know the Tacx Flux Smart is an eddy currents brake -one of the reasons it does not have the descent simulation because unlike the Neo, it can't work as a motor. Do you know any smart trainer of any brand that regens to the grid?
That's a damn good question. Tacx direct would be the best to give an answer on that. Tacx also have an older model trainer that returns power to the grid. There was mention of it on Zwift Riders Facebook group a week or so ago.
This is still pretty unreasonable for a new trainer. I just received one and it has the same issue. Having to open support tickets and obtain the extraction tool is a piss poor first impression.
Yeah i agree. Im new to indoor training and i had a good look at theTacx, but after all the problems i have seen people have with the tacx im getting the kickr bike !
Great video. How did you get your cassette back on so quickly? My Neo 2 has 3 spring loaded cams or clips which made getting the cassette back on really tough with only 2 hands!
I'm really struggling to recommend Tacx to anyone with all the issues you've seen recently and my own experience with a vortex smart (drum noises fixed with glue and now a power resistor melting) i think they need to look at their quality. i was looking to replace it and the flux looked like a candidate but with all the issues think i will spend more and go kickr
That really depends on the rider and usage. The Neo I've covered the other week has 53,000km on it. I've had a Kickr break a belt at 10,000km. Others have had Kickrs clocking up over 20,000km with no dramas.
Perhaps there's a slight amount of play in the bolt holes for the retaining bolts that hold the outer disc on. The act of removing the disc and refitting has possibly re-centered it? You're only talking a fraction of a mm here....
Might have been the way I ripped it out of the box and grabbed the freewheel thingy when plonking it on the ground. Either way, all sorted now. Let's hope it's not that fragile again... it'll be travelling more in the future as the winter weather kicks in here in Australia and people want to try one out before buying.
tacx should supply the tool with the unit. Although then any Ham fisted muppet could stuff it up. Maybe not. but maybe lbs can hold the tool as a workshop item
Just watch this, and at 3.52 in there can be see a small semi circle in the plastic magnet carrier, this could be mounded in or did this break way and was the cause of the noise? Next place a clean sheet of paper under your work areas to catch any debris.
Thanks Shane. This is such a helpful video. What did impress me the most though, was the speed at which you were able to remove and install the cassette. I'm running Ultegra on the Neo and it's very tight. I find I have to take it out and install it piece by piece. How do you do yours so efficiently?
I'm not sure if this is relevant but I think it a good idea to make sure to disconnect power before opening up the unit. It'd be a good mention at the start of the video, eh? :) By the way, my son't name is Shane Miller, born in '77.
The trainer was never connected to power in the video. I assume people have a level of safety understanding. If not, then god help them riding in traffic outside.
@@gplama I understand but, unfortunately, when doing an instructional video (or booklet, etc.) one's assumptions can get one into difficulty and erring on the safe side is prudent. After all, there are those out there who may not have noticed or even considered to take the power off. Happens all the time....
@@lazurm If it gets to this level I'll have go close up and let the companies who make the products produce content. If this leads to me being liable for people getting themselves into trouble, sued, etc.... all for helping people out. It's not worth my time.
Shane great video and thanks. Can you post the name of similar name of the gadget you used to clean your cassette? I do it by hand and it gets very messy and would like to use a gadget similar to what you used. Thanks again and I'll try and do the recommended maintenance tonight for the 1st time as I had mine well over 2 years and it is making an odd noise at certain cadences and load. I hope I don't need to take it apart like you did with the special tacx tool (I opened a support case with them last night and showed them my video of the noise I have - not as bad as your noise) and that taking the hub off, cleaning and lubing it will resolve. Thanks again
Hi Shane, very interested video. I''m going to buy a Neo, but I'm wondering about NEO or Elite Drivo, so I want to ask You, how many hour You rode on your Neo before this grinding noises?
Hmm.. I bought a Neo after having issues with my Kickr (belt breaking, shim wearing, inaccurate, drifting POS). Nice video. Maybe a small metal shaving fell out as you pulled the cover off? They could probably redesign the Neo to catch any metal or dirt that lodges in the cover.
Wahoo will need to keep on top of the belts and shims for a long time to come that's for sure. My four year old Kickr is becoming grandpa's axe, but I still love it. The new firmware switching Kickr1 from strain gauge to model mode for power reporting has helped a lot of people and extended the life/value of the Kickr1 units.
What do you think about Neo? Is it best trainer on market right now ? What about new models? Are they coming or manufactures just updates old trainers? Thank you anyway. Realy like your videos.
That bracket covers them all. There's no straight easy answer, here's my rundown on them all: gplama.blogspot.com.au/p/indoor-trainer-guide-gplama.html
Hi Shane. Great video. I only live want to buy the right trainer once so in your opinion which one should I get. I only want to use mostly during winter when it gets dark earlier and when it's wet in summer. I'd like to keep it at $1100 limit so looking at the flux or am I better spending the extra and getting a neo or equivalent. I noticed the neo was very Quiet compared to the kickr.
If noise is a #1 concern, go with the Neo for now. Otherwise there's a few options. I've outlined/summarised everything I've ridden here: gplama.blogspot.com.au/p/indoor-trainer-guide-gplama.html
Shane, thanks for these great videos. I have got a Neo nearly a month ago and right from the beginning I was feeling light vibrations/rumbling at certain low cadence & wattage (~60rpm/100W). I was wondering if you have experienced a similar issue or seen a solution for this somewhere? On some blogs I read that changing the gear set could help, but not much difference for me.
The way in which the unit is designed with the magnets you may feel a little vibration at super low speeds/watts. I'd have to jump on mine and replicate it... and know exactly what you're experiencing. If it's a concern then get a quick video of it and explain how to replicate it over to Tacx Support.
Hey mate, My tacx flux 2 after updating the firmware won't connect to Bluetooth or ant+. Garmin won't help, they want to charge me 250 dollars to replace, detail, I am in Brazil... Have seen loads of same issues online, could u give me some light here? Thanka
I'm really sorry but I can't do much when it comes to Garmin at the moment. They're currently not supporting the work I do here, so I can't give any of my time providing support for their products. (I'm doing my best to change this situation)
Thank you so much for doing the video on this problem with the NEO. Do you think Tacx will update the NEO (like NEO 2.0) for fall 2017/spring 2018? If TACX doesn't release some sort of new and improved/fixed version of the NEO, I'm not buying one. I will not a buy a trainer I know I will have to fix in the future that will require a "plate extractor" to get the problem fixed.
I have he same grinding noise ?Have taken it apart 3 times and it won’t go away . Happens especially when climbing or sprinting when it’s getting torqued
I watched your video after having this exact issue, I have repeated the process completely 4 times now & still can’t get rid of noise. What are your thoughts on what else I can possibly do. When I opened up the Tacx NEO there is no marks at all that I can find on either the outer pads & or the magnets. I have also cleaned everything, re-greased as well… I get the noise when spinning with my hand as per your video & when cycling.
I don’t have one of these but if you want to put a little time into this, you can put marks on the outside wheel magnets using non-permanent markers for example and hand spin it. The contacts will cause the marker to transfer. You can then see where the magnets are making contact and making the noise.
surprised to see how much lateral movement you are getting while riding (at the end) just got a flux (knock on wood I know) but it almost seems sturdier (I'm also a few cm & kg less than you) Cheaper model sturdier than the high end???
Laterally the flux seems quite good (I was ready to take a financial risk to get the Neo) I think the flux fits my needs and hopefully doesn't break. Shane, thanks for being so professional, you've always replied within 1min anytime I post a comment (helps that I'm in NZ) but still!
My neo arribe today, and woops it makes that horrible sound! I mean i cant even used for 1 time!!! That's amazing i am put in contact with tacx support! I hope the solve my problem right away! By the way i hope the send the special tool to mexico.
Shane Miller thanks. I did the contact, and the answer was not good, because they said that the problem can't be solved. The axis axis and the bearing of the trainer cannot be replaced because they are assembled with special machines and they cannot be removed and replace. So it is really not good for me. Now I look for a new trainer. Which do you prefer, Elite Drivo or Tacx Neo? tks
Nice Video Shane. I'm dying to take my Neo apart but mine is working perfectly so I can't find a good reason to get in there... yet.. :-P Also, any autoparts supply store will sell bearing puller sets.. If you can't get a hold of this original Tacx unit any generic type puller will work just fine.
DON'T TOUCH IT! ;) This isn't a bearing puller as such, it's just a mechanism to pull the freehub shell thing away from the magnets neatly. I reckon there'd be a way to hack up a similar part to do the same job. Hopefully nobody will need to go down that avenue.
Caution obviously... The Taxc tool is a single purpose puller. I think Kerry was referring to a universal bolt style wheel puller, like this: store.snapon.com/Bolt-Grip-Puller-Sets-Set-Puller-Bolt-Grip-1-1-4-mdash-3-13-16-includes-storage-case--P635337.aspx NOT a bearing puller specifically. When I watched the video I immediately thought of this puller set in my tool box. All that said, please remember I do not have a Neo, nor have I ever used this puller set to work on one...
I think mine needs a service like this. On descents in Zwift mine makes a pretty epic "Wooooo" noise (technical term) which seems to be magnified as the freewheeling simulation gets faster. However I'd be worried about taking the plate off and *really* screwing things up. Do you reckon Tacx would send me the tool if I asked? I know you've got mad connections!
Depends. I'd get a video of what it's doing and submit that over to Tacx Support. They'll advise if anything is out of order and know what to do from there.
I guess we have to recognise that four months is a long time to go without a satisfactory resolution and we should then spend our money accordingly. Sad because Tacx seemed to respond pretty well initially but now seem to be happy to take the reputational risk of not resolving this for you in a timely way.
You'd ride outside somewhere warm and sunny. As for what equipment is 'best'... there's no easy answer... and it ends in owner arguments when you ask online. :) This might help: gplama.blogspot.com.au/p/indoor-trainer-guide-gplama.html
Thanks for the quick reply, i'm in between the CycleOps Phantom 5 and the tacx neo.. Perhaps you can advise based on training platform; is swift better then CycleOps VirtualTraining? My top 3 needs are: 1 Low noise levels 2 able to ride up the Mortirolo (virtually for now) and other famous mountains. 3 easy on and off.
1. Neo. Hands down the quietest trainer on the market. The Drivo is close.. but the Neo is the answer. 2. I don't have a subscription to CVT, so I'm not sure. There's a few options here to look into. 3. Hmm..... depends on your bike I guess. The Neo isn't too bad getting a bike on or off, the Kickr has a lower profile assembly which makes it a breeze to get on and off. Maybe check out a Neo at a local shop so you know what you're in for.
Man you are awesome!! Thank you so much, I can't believe you actually answered so quickly. I sub'ed a while ago and now you have me for life.. Keep up the good work.
I've had a couple of instances where erg mode drops out on my kickr while in workouts,is this just something that happens from time to time?keep up the good work mate, how's Maven?no vlogs for a few days
If this is happening on Zwift, throw your log.txt through www.zwiftalizer.com and see if it's ANT+ dropouts causing the issues. Haven't spoken to Mave for a few days, looks like he and H are busy with their Giro prep! Can't wait to see what those two come up with!
Shane Miller yes it happened on Zwift but im quite proud it caused a 1880watts spike, and then later 780,it's OK I just wanted to check the kickr wasn't close to death, glad you made it back from Vegas without a face tattoo
thanks Shane but are they strong magnets? from tacx i recieved a awnser To prevent problems from occurring there are strict requirements for products to comply with. Our products are all tested and meet all international requirements. The requirements for products like the Neo are much stricter than those for example phones or WiFi equipment. The protocols used by us ANT + and BT smart are very low energy levels. Strong magnets have no effect on an ICD. The frequency on the coils may cause a malfunction, but these meet the emission requirements and are placed within a steel rotor which incorporates electromagnetic radiation. Our belief is that an ICD can not be affected in any way by our products but this guy is afraid now because Thursday my icd was working 3 times whit a shock no ritme disturbing but high hf i don,t now it anymore maybey it is the wetter hot etc etc but thanks shane i like the things from you here on RUclips bye
I'm out of warranty and don't get any service from Tacx! I can change if for another one, for an amount of money you can repair everything that's in it! It would be a 2T but nothing about new or 'refurbished' nor warranty. I don't want that (and don't have the budget). Anyone here found out what's wrong when a T2800 drops resistance, gets hot, stinks when it breaks down and afterwards gives just red leds and quits starting up after a second??
Check firmware version. Check ANT+ or BLE signal (use a USB extension cable if you're using ANT+). Raise a support ticket with as much detail as you can put together with Tacx Support.
Shane I used to have this noise but Tacx sent me a replacement unit and no issues. However I’ve recently been expecting what I can only describe as a sort of click both pedalling forwards or backwards. Removed the Edco body and re greased the small shin and also inside the Edco body too (tightened cassette also) but the sound remains!
Move them around every now and then when I need more space. Return them. Pull them off the shelf and update firmware on them to see what's new. All of the above.
Hi, I've tried this service operation without result. When I lean to the left, the sound and vibration stops. When I lean to the right the magnets hit the coils inside the freewheel. Do I need to change the bearings?
I agree with Shane. My friend had the same issue. Tacx were superb, paid for postage and packaging they replaced the Neo with a brand new one no questions asked
The Tacx Neo range has design fault which develops over time where the axle on the non-cassette side is not supported properly by the adaptor leading to 'Axle Sag' on the right hand side. This can be heard by grinding and can be seen when removing the magnetic disc with scored magnets or the outer disc with black rubbing from the plastic casing. This can be rectified by adding a 'ReAxle' to hold the axle properly and remove 'Axle Sag'. A 'ReAxle' can be used as a preventative measure to stop 'Axle Sag' happening or a repair to after it has happened. Google 'ReAxle Neo'. I have no commercial connection with 'ReAxle' but felt it's worth sharing a cost effective solution I found which helps solve a problem. Hope it helps.
Shane great video! I've watched a few of yours now and I'm trying to decide between the Neo and the Kickr. What would you say your favorite is for zwift and all around indoor training?
There's no easy answer. Kickr for Zwift. The Neo if you need Zwift + low noise. The LeMond Revolution for training. More details here: gplama.blogspot.com.au/p/indoor-trainer-guide-gplama.html
Shane, I just bought the Neo yesterday & only set it up tonight. Took a bit of time to setup & update the firmware. After I put the cassette in the first time, I thought of your video & decided to check the bolts holding the plate in place.
Interesting! Upload the photo to imgur.com/ and shoot a link here in the comments or to me direct. You'll love the Neo coming from a standard trainer!
Crikey! That's worth shooting the link to Tacx Support just as a heads up (include your Neo serial # and place of purchase). They should be able to follow up the QC on that unit.
Thanks I'll give this a try. My neo is brand new and has that silly noise. 😡😡☹
I'm glad you can still find a good use for the Yellow Pages.
And the sound effects award goes to.....Shane Miller aka The Llama for his plate removal scene in Grinding Noise Solved video. Congratulations!
+John Bailey 😇👌🏼
I don't even have a trainer and I liked and watched the video! :)
Awesome! Thank you. I've always wanted to take the Neo apart and see what was inside.
I love watching this shit!
I liked the "choir of holyness" when you opened up to the coils :)
Great video. Just got a 2T and had the same problem. Solution was the same - extra the flywheel, didn't see any particles but did see slight scoring on a few of the magnets, reinstalled the flywheel and voila!

I love the sound it makes when you open it up ;-)
hahahh! The angles escaped from the magic within. Don't worry, I put them back in. :)
I bought one in 2015 when they came out , and when freewheeling it was horrendously loud ! i had to open it up and grease the freehub , and that was it.

mines has just started to rub but only in the smaller cogs, took the disc off as this video put back on but still the same

ha...+1 and sigh: "then the sound comes back next week"
I've been using my NEO for 30 months and +8,000km and today I started hearing the noise during my ride. I've logged a call with TACX support, I hope to get some good news from them soon.
TACX support have contacted me and asked me to do some tests and provide them with some footage. Here's a video of the problem: ruclips.net/video/JvmeQHkoIEQ/видео.html
Good on Tacx for sending out the kit to fix it.
I'll loan it out to anyone in the area who needs it ASAP too (and Tacx advise it's the best solution)
I had this exact problem. ON A BRAND NEW TRAINER.
Same here. Just got one last week and finally put on a cassette and bike. It's making this noise without having pedaled once :(. At least it looks like no big issue, but shouldn't be there on a brand new one.
Shane, we are from England & we love you!!!
Thanks Shane - Same problem on a Tacx Neo right out of the box!
Thank you so much for this video. Just received my T2 and set it up and I get the same noise. I will have to contact support tomorrow or return it.
I received the extractor tool. Didn’t find anything inside but wiped it out as you did and then reassembled. My trainer is now dead quiet. Thanks again!
I have the same noise, and was in trouble.
thank you very much.
That's not optimal. If you purchased locally, I'd take it back for a swap. If it was broken stock then it shouldn't be up to you to fix that.
Bought a 2017 Neo yesterday and the grinding noise started after 10mins!!!
Has the noise went away? Just remove the plate then out back on? How often does one need to do that?
Thanks!
Nice vid! The Neo sure looks good on the inside too!
Yeah, it was nice to see inside the thing. It even made the sound of angles when I took it apart. That's special tech! ;)
There was mention of it on Zwift Riders Facebook group a week or so ago.
thanks - might need to do this in the future...
ps-watched a bit closer to see the tool tacx sent and heard the opening sound...lol! thanks for that.
This is still pretty unreasonable for a new trainer. I just received one and it has the same issue. Having to open support tickets and obtain the extraction tool is a piss poor first impression.
Agreed. Mind you I'm now on my 7th flux in 24 months
This is why you should have a Kickr
They've been out for years
Quirks are worked out
Just get the Kickr and ride on 👍
Yeah i agree.
We have the Tacx Flux and it’s had two issues. Would you say Tacx or Wahoo are better long term?
That really depends on the rider and usage. The Neo I've covered the other week has 53,000km on it. I've had a Kickr break a belt at 10,000km. Others have had Kickrs clocking up over 20,000km with no dramas.
Perhaps there's a slight amount of play in the bolt holes for the retaining bolts that hold the outer disc on. The act of removing the disc and refitting has possibly re-centered it? You're only talking a fraction of a mm here....
Yeah, I assume that's what it was.
No loctite.... just reinstalled them as they came. Loctite will be round 2 if required.
This Neo had been recently rented out according to Shane.. Who knows what type of bumping around it took in the process...
Nope, not a break away. Part of the design. Well spotted though!
Thanks Shane. This is such a helpful video. What did impress me the most though, was the speed at which you were able to remove and install the cassette. I'm running Ultegra on the Neo and it's very tight. I find I have to take it out and install it piece by piece. How do you do yours so efficiently?
+Terry Weber I remove the whole freehub in this video, not the cassette by itself.
Same issue on a brand new T2. Thanks a lot.
Hi Shane, thanks for the video! Where did you buy the black cassette type to remove the magnets/flywheel? Thanks!
That was supplied from Tacx at the time (who Garmin now own). It's now up on the Garmin website under "Tacx NEO Disc Extractor"
Nice Music when opened the plate 😊
+Brian Juhl 😇👌🏼
You just solved by unmounting and mounting back... So easy so good hehe
Looking forward to your next go with a Tacx Flux.
I'm not sure if this is relevant but I think it a good idea to make sure to disconnect power before opening up the unit. It'd be a good mention at the start of the video, eh? :)
By the way, my son't name is Shane Miller, born in '77.
+tomacias The grinding isn't usage related. It seems to be random. I've seen it happen out of the box new. It's usually a quick fix as shown.
Thx, for quick reply. Regards
Any problem with the drivo? Mine sounds the belts
Is the Tacx Neo removal tool the same for the Neo and Neo 2T?
Looks like you might need a stronger shelf too mate!
Yeah, that one has a bit of a bend in the middle. Hacked up solution, cheaper than going to Ikea! :)
If you had to pick out of all trainers, what would you picked?
Does tacx sell that extractor. Would be nice to have one on hand just in case.
Yeah, according to the FB Neo Owners group, it should be available in the near future...
Martin R. Sweet. Thanks
What do you think about Neo? Is it best trainer on market right now ? What about new models? Are they coming or manufactures just updates old trainers? Thank you anyway. Realy like your videos.
Here's what you're after: gplama.blogspot.com.au/p/indoor-trainer-guide-gplama.html
Shane, I just brought a Neo and have same issue for a few seconds after. How can I solve it? Where can I get the tool?
Hi Shane love the videos by the way, in your opinion what is the best smart trainer for around 1,500 - 2,000 Australia dollars
That bracket covers them all. There's no straight easy answer, here's my rundown on them all: gplama.blogspot.com.au/p/indoor-trainer-guide-gplama.html
Cheers mate helped a lot keep up the good work cheers once again
Great video just wondering did you check the bearing you didn't mention anything about it?
Checked. It was fine.
Nice one thanks for replying 👍
Don't worry. I just saw your reply to another question. Basically stay away from Tacx hey. I will.
They seem to have sorted out the Flux. I can't break my 3rd unit, so that's all good.
@@gplama #garminsucks
Thank you so much for doing the video on this problem with the NEO. Do you think Tacx will update the NEO (like NEO 2.0) for fall 2017/spring 2018? If TACX doesn't release some sort of new and improved/fixed version of the NEO, I'm not buying one. I will not a buy a trainer I know I will have to fix in the future that will require a "plate extractor" to get the problem fixed.
I have he same grinding noise ?Have taken it apart 3 times and it won’t go away . Happens especially when climbing or sprinting when it’s getting torqued
Hi Paul, Do you find a solution? I just have the same noise for my Neo Bike smart T8000 bought in March. I hope Shane's solution will solve the issue.
Excuse me but how did your disc extractor slide on so easily? Mine(on a Tacx Neo 2T) just doesn't come on...
One for Tacx Support. I don't know how to answer this... it just worked.
It was the phone book that did it. You know how old that thing is?
The Neo? 12 months. (iirc at the time)
surprised to see how much lateral movement you are getting while riding (at the end) just got a flux (knock on wood I know) but it almost seems sturdier (I'm also a few cm & kg less than you)
Cheaper model sturdier than the high end???
+Emile Goguely By design. Different products. But I won't justify/defend anything. I break things regardless.
Hola Luis, donde compraste el entrenador para que te llegara a México? Lograron solucionarte el problema? Saludos
I bet when Shane raises a service ticket , it's all hands on deck to help resolve it.
Or someone hits the fire alarm and they all run!
Dear Shane,
I Have a Elite Turbo Muin Smart B+ Trainer and it is a strange noise. Do you know anithing about this problem? Could you help me?
+Jose Claudio Moreira Gonçalves You need to contact Elite support for this one.
Hi Shane, I’m facing a weird problem in my trainer. It looses the power so when I paddle my foot kinda slip .. any idea ?
One for Tacx Support.
Does TACX let you pre-order that tool they sent you so that if something occurs, you don't have to wait the 5 days?
I’m not sure. I guess so.
Hi Shane what kind of lube did you apply on the edco and the middle tube? Best regards!
Lithium grease... at a guess. I can't recall.
Great video. Ended up buying a NEO after having a kickr for a while, and your videos on the NEO helped me decide. 👍🏻#zwiftriders
I've had two out the box like this think it's big on the 2017 models
This is an original (not the newer narrow case Neo)
Hi Shane, what happened with the Tacx Flux that kept breaking? Have the problems been addressed or is your advice still to stay clear?
Nothing to report here unfortunately. No Round 3 has taken place.
I guess we have to recognise that four months is a long time to go without a satisfactory resolution and we should then spend our money accordingly. Sad because Tacx seemed to respond pretty well initially but now seem to be happy to take the reputational risk of not resolving this for you in a timely way.
Shane, if money is not a problem what is the best indoor setup?
You'd ride outside somewhere warm and sunny. As for what equipment is 'best'... there's no easy answer... and it ends in owner arguments when you ask online. :) This might help: gplama.blogspot.com.au/p/indoor-trainer-guide-gplama.html
Thanks for the quick reply, i'm in between the CycleOps Phantom 5 and the tacx neo.. Perhaps you can advise based on training platform; is swift better then CycleOps VirtualTraining? My top 3 needs are:
1 Low noise levels
2 able to ride up the Mortirolo (virtually for now) and other famous mountains.
Keep up the good work.
he shane can you give us some excact dimensions on that extracter tool so i can model one to 3d print?
Mine is packed away somewhere. Tacx may be able to supply these details.
Shane Miller yes it happened on Zwift but im quite proud it caused a 1880watts spike, and then later 780,it's OK I just wanted to check the kickr wasn't close to death, glad you made it back from Vegas without a face tattoo
dear shane..i have a icd in my body fore my heart are the magnets to strong ore is there no problem?best regards johnny
This is one for your specialist to answer.
thanks Shane but are they strong magnets? from tacx i recieved a awnser To prevent problems from occurring there are strict requirements for products to comply with.
Our belief is that an ICD can not be affected in any way by our products but this guy is afraid now because Thursday my icd was working 3 times whit a shock no ritme disturbing but high hf i don,t now it anymore maybey it is the wetter hot etc etc but thanks shane i like the things from you here on RUclips bye
hey hello Shane there is no problem between my tacx neo and mij icd because it is ant+ i use it whit tss4 on my computer..have a cool day johnny
Can you link your wahoo bolt to the TacX Neo??? Regards.
Previous firmware allowed this. Not the current, apparently.
Is the extractor included in the package? Or will Tacx send one upon request?
Not included. Your local Tacx dealer may have one, Tacx may supply one once they determine the best solution to the reported issue.
I promise it wasn't doing that when I had it!!
All good mate. Sorted now and I've managed to make some content around it that'll help others. That's a win in my books.
I was hoping you'd say it was prerecorded! At least if mine now gets the issue you have the right tools!
Mine is still all over the place with surging on the power and cadence read outs.
Check firmware version. Check ANT+ or BLE signal (use a USB extension cable if you're using ANT+). Raise a support ticket with as much detail as you can put together with Tacx Support.
Tried everything Shane might raise another support ticket
This really is the analogue version of "did you try turning it off and on again"
+Robin Stevens hahah yep. 👍🏼
One for Tacx Support. They’ve head every noise these things make and can diagnose it no problem.
Where did you buy the extractor tool?
Supplied from Tacx when I had the issue.
What do you do with all those trainers in the background
Move them around every now and then when I need more space. Return them. Pull them off the shelf and update firmware on them to see what's new. All of the above.
Which smart trainer forum sites do you visit?
Most of them... and special user/owner groups etc. Keeps me across the user experience out in the field (which I'm a part of too).
Hi, I've tried this service operation without result. When I lean to the left, the sound and vibration stops. When I lean to the right the magnets hit the coils inside the freewheel. Do I need to change the bearings?
Best ping Tacx Support on this one
I agree with Shane. My friend had the same issue. Tacx were superb, paid for postage and packaging they replaced the Neo with a brand new one no questions asked
Is new neo2 flywheel same shape than this here?
Yep
Shane Miller - GPLama
Thats nice🙂
My Neo 2 out of the box made this noise (September 4, 2019), so I'm swapping it for another one at my LBS tomorrow.
:) keep up the good work.
My grinding noise is different, more like a rubbing noise.
The grinding noises you're hearing are my teeth at the moment.... ggrrrroutube! Contact Tacx with a sound recording and they'll sort yours out.
where did you find extractor ?
Contact Tacx Support
Wow u have a ton of bike trainers.
Awesome thanks for the feedback! It also looks like they solved the erg mode problem with the Neo. Time to start saving.
