Excellent commentary and troubled shooting. Saved me from buying several rods. Agreed, it's only a mower, it ain't a space shuttle, tighten things up and get back to work!

You were lucky. My pushrod ended up becoming a twisted knot in the sump. Had to pull the engine and split it. Tried the trick of piening the aluminium over and even used red locktite but the guide still works its way up. It seems to have become so loose in the bore now that it just moves up and down freely. Only has to hold in there for a couple more months.

    Did this work?

Mine is doing this. Check the push rods not bent, but the rocker is very loose and rod would slip around. Don't think this is the problem though? Knock is very loud, sounds like something is about to come through the block.

Its possible that you have a dropped valve seat

I just watched another video where the author claims that peening the guide in won't work, and that it comes loose again. How has it held up?

It lasted me the rest of that season. I have since bought another larger mower.
You could also apply red locktite tonthe guide before you drive it back in. Im certain it is not a permanent fix, but nothing is more permanent than a temporary fix that works lol

@@quadbilly2106 So today YT recommended a video about fixing the guide. This guy put a set screw into the side of the head. ruclips.net/video/zhPxy0a6s24/видео.html

No. I ran it the rest of that year without issue. I don't think it would be a permanent fix that would last forever, however some of my most permanent repairs were meant to be temporary lol
