I freaking love that this show points out that the pilgrims were bigoted, racist, religious fanatics who rather than learn to coexist with other cultures tried to convert or kill any nonbelievers. It’s why I stood and applauded when the statue of Crackstone was destroyed, WHILE Wednesday played an epic cello solo as a way to sign her work.👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Also Fun Fact: The Mayor is played by Tommie Earl Jenkins who gamers will recognize as Die-Hardman from Death Stranding.
Also I loved the end with the cello version of Nothing Else Matters by Metallica.

"Everything seems to have a political message these days". It always did, Jaby. People just didn't pay attention. Just watch something from the 70s/80s/90s and you'll see there's lots of politics in most supernatural shows. Buffy, Xena, Charmed, Star Trek, Star Wars, Doctor Who. I could go on.
Buffy even had an episode where they "debated" Thanksgiving as a tradition and the treatment of natives, 22 years ago! (It was a hilarious episode btw) And in the third episode of the show, THIRD, when it was just starting, Buffy called a mother of one of her classmates "nazi-like" (because she was extremely strict and abusive). Before conservatives started complaining about whatever agenda they think is being spread.
X-Men was a brilliant example! Exactly. X-Men were always metaphors for minorities. Entirely political since its inception.
Politics aside, I really loved this show. And politics-wise, it was pretty much on point. Loved all the criticisms on the US society. xD

The issue is actually more about the implementation. That most writers / filmmakers / etc. used to know how to handle such commentary with more subtlety and grace. They used to write a piece of entertainment to be entertaining first and to naturally weave some messaging within it where it fits. Newer media can sometimes come across more like they're trying to preach a message at you first and then maybe trying to awkwardly squeeze in some entertainment on the side if there's room leftover for it.

    • @JordiVanderwaal

@@MuljoStpho I always felt like US media from before the mid 00s was very preachy when it comes to religion. So I think it depends on how you view the world as well, maybe.

@@JordiVanderwaal and most messaging is seated in the context of it's time. The OG Star Wars was VERY political - specifically criticizing the US involvement in Vietnam as one of it's messages, but watching it now, that context is so far away, tons of people pretend the message is more 'subtle' when at the time, it was very overt. And you're very right about 80s, 90s, and 00s pushing of Christianity in tons of media and no one complained - because they were the majority. Now that minorities are getting to speak, people think the message is too 'loud'

Your explanation is very good. I very much agree. I just learned that the Arabs castrated their slaves to keep them from reproducing and as terrible and awful general knowledge of slavery is (very small is the knowledge most know as in how widespread it was and not about race) this shocked me to learn that that is why there aren’t many of any descendants of slaves in arab nations.

I think the 'mansplain' line is to show how Wednesday would rather cut down people trying to connect with her rather than let them in. It's pretty clear narratively that he's giving decent advice, but Wednesday already doesn't like the attention he's giving her and is constantly trying to push him away, so I saw that as an abrasive attempt to get him to leave her alone just in general rather than that being a social commentary by the writers as to what Xavier was doing

    *Addams* *Family* *vs.* *The* *Munsters*
I grew up with The Munsters that came from the 1960s. And then watched The Munsters Today during the 1980s. The Munsters is written more like a typical sitcom. More slapstick. Herman is like Homer Simpson. Fred Gwynne was my fav.
Love the Herman Munster laugh. He was such a klutz but a loveable klutz. Grandpa Munster was always so endearing. The Addams is written more with satire. While the Munsters consist of Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, and Werewolf, the more morbid and psychotic family are the Addams. Wednesday was trained as a child to swim next to sharks.
I wasn't aware of the 1930s comic strip and 1960s sitcom of the Addams Family. I wasn't aware of this franchise until the 1991 and 1993 films which I saw with my family in the theater. Then the theme song with the snapping fingers got stuck in my head. If I had to choose which is the better IP, it's the Addams. While the Munsters had the better intro song, the Addams have the more interesting characters.
    Gomez < Herman
    Morticia > Lily
    Wednesday > Eddie
    Pugsley < Eddie
    Grandma Addams < Grandpa Munster
    Any Addams > Marilyn
The Addams still have Thing, Uncle Fester, Lurch, and Cousin Itt. But I still love me The Munsters although I didn't watch that Rob Zombie film from last year because the trailer looked gawd awful. The Addams is the better franchise because it has the more interesting characters and that's why it has more revivals. Can I love both The Addams Family and The Munsters? Yes I can and yes I will.
People may think I'm hating on Christina Ricci if I say Jenna Ortega is a better Wednesday. I'm not. I love Christina Ricci! Had a crush on her for 30 years. We're close to the same age born in the same year (1980) and so many of my classmates had the hots for her when we were still in middle school. Yeah, she has a big forehead like Mena Suvari but we don't care! I'll always idolize her.
Christina was hot af when she was in Black Snake Moan. She's the reason why I love Wednesday. I just think Jenna did it better because Lisa Loring and Christina Ricci portrayed younger versions of Wednesday because they were still very young. Lisa was 6. Christina was 10 when she filmed the 1991 film. Jenna did it better being she's 20 and she portrayed it in a way by not trying to rip-off Christina's.
I'm aware Luis Guzman isn't a popular casting choice, but in the comic strip, he is supposed to be short and pudgy. I guess Raul Julia portrayed Gomez with so much charisma, it's hard to look at Luis Guzman the same way thinking Catherine Zeta-Jones' Morticia fell for this guy. I'm not a fan of Luis Guzman as Gomez either but I can live with it.
Guzman felt miscast in The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) too but Luis must have a great agent if he can land roles for Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Traffic. I think Johnny Depp, Oscar Isaac, or Pedro Pascal would've portrayed a better Gomez. Could've aged up the latter two but I guess Tim Burton wanted more comic accuracy. Catherine is actually Welsh but she can portray Latina as seen in Zorro.
The 1960s Gomez, John Astin, is still alive, BTW. One of Sean Astin's dads. Hence, why Sean did such a great job as Bob in Stranger Things S2. A tribute to all the dads he's close with. Sean Astin is like the best son you can ever have if he's close with the 3 men he considers his dads. So understanding and caring like Bob. His mother, Patty Duke, must be smiling from above.
    Ranking My Favorite Characters
    1. Wednesday Addams
    2. Herman Munster
    3. Thing
    4. Morticia Addams
    5. Grandpa Munster
    6. Lily Munster
    7. Gomez Addams
    8. Uncle Fester
    9. Eddie Munster
    10. Cousin Itt
    11. Lurch
    12. Grandma Addams
    13. Marilyn Munster
    1990s vs. 2020s Cast
    Raul Julia > Luis Guzman
    Anjelica Huston > Catherine Zeta-Jones
    Christina Ricci < Jenna Ortega
    Christopher Lloyd > Fred Armisen
    Thing < Thing
TBH, I think Fred Armisen had a better Uncle Fester. I thought Christopher Lloyd's was a little too much. Remember, he had amnesia for most of that first film and was brainwashed. Fred's version showed more emotion. But I'll still have Christopher slightly ahead because we only got 1 episode from Fred. My apologies to Jackie Coogan who portrayed the crying child in The Kid (1921) with Charlie Chaplin. It's only 1990s vs. 2020s since I didn't really watch the 1960s Addams Family.
    Favorite Actor For Each Character
    Gomez Addams: Raul Julia (1990s)
    Morticia Addams: Anjelica Huston (1990s)
    Wednesday Addams: Jenna Ortega (2020s)
    Pugley Addams: Jimmy Workman (1990s)
Uncle Fester: Christopher Lloyd (1990s) but barely
Grandma Addams: Wasn't shown in the new series.
Lurch, Cousin Itt, and Thing I won't rank but I will say the Netflix version of Thing is the best one yet. So helpful to Wednesday and actually quite caring and thoughtful. Wanted Wednesday to have a surprise happy birthday. This is just a hand who can't speak and he's a better character than most characters in that school. And I do refer to Thing as a he/him since that's a male's hand.
With Pugley, I've always felt indifferent. He's just there the way Marilyn Munster was just there. I went with the 90s Pugley actor for all the hijinks he did. The 2022 version was just kinda meh. Morticia and Wednesday have always been the most interesting ones for me. Christina Ricci even dressed up as Morticia. I like Lily Munster too, but Morticia just has this cool goth mom swag about her.
I thought Anjelica Huston portrayed Morticia to perfection. Shame she got old and fat like Kathleen Turner and Kelly McGillis. Since Anjelica did The Witches (1990), she was perfect to portray Morticia. I do hope she and Lisa Loring makes a cameo for Season 2.
Yvonne De Carlo, OG Lily Munster, was a very beautiful woman. Bride of Frankenstein. Same with Carolyn Jones, OG Morticia, whom the 64-year-old Lisa Loring (OG Wednesday) is starting to look like. For The Munsters, it's pretty much every actor from the 1960s sitcom is my favorite. I don't recall too much from The Munsters Today and never watched the late-90s TV revival of The Addams Family.
Jenna Ortega's Wednesday is the G.O.A.T Addams. She took Wednesday to another level that I'm not sure will be surpassed in 30 years. She's a superhero/super agent like a Black Widow and she's an experienced archer/sharpshooter like Kate Bishop. She builds contraptions. She's multilingual. She's a cellist and author. She fights for the underdogs and outcasts. She's a badass. She's the G.O.A.T.

Thomas Jefferson began assaulting Sally Hemmings when he was 44 and she was 14. People like to justify this by saying he "loved" her and she "loved" him. I would not doubt that over time... after she soldiered thru the first dozen or so forced couplings - the thought of spending her days in the Big House as opposed to the fields probably made that old man more attractive to her.

Not sure why you guys are so bothered by Wednesday using the term "mansplain"
This show is set in a modern setting, ie 2010's/2020's. The words origins are 2008.
And it's literally what Xavier did. He was mansplaining Wednesday's power to her.
There's nothing woke about that term. It's a common term to call out a man's sexism.
There's a way of going about it because, yes, what Xavier was saying was valuable and helpful information. After all, his dad is an actual expert. But the way he went about it was patronizing.
    It was literally mansplaining.
And Wednesday, whose character takes no shit from nobody, rightfully and correctly calls him out on it.
It's a brilliant line brilliantly written for this shows target audience. Young teens.

    • @MuljoStpho
      @MuljoStpho Год назад

It's more of a caricature, not a real thing, and the intention in the word's invention was to characterize all men (and only ever men) as always (regardless of any context) acting a certain negative way any and every time they ever even so much as think of opening their mouths about any subject at all.

There's a difference between paying attention and being woke and being over woke taking offense at every perceived slight. Wednesday the character has always been on top of this kind of stuff. Also X-Men was about bigotry in general and had much Ado about LGBTQ before that's what it was ever called because it was exploring human bigotry. We're already seeing discrimination against cybernetics before we've even properly implemented it and when you think of AGI a learning computer you probably get scared because of the media you've watched. "Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it" that's part of the reason these right-wing fundamentalist zealot politicians are trying to make everyone think education is bad, they really want to repeat it and a stupid populace is a malleable populace.
