The Sting was deliberately filmed 'soft' to create a 1930s atmosphere, the intent was to shoot in black and white but the studio did not allow it. What you are seeing on 4k is as intended creatively, keep that in mind and the 4k blu ray video quality is actually gorgeous.
That makes sense, cause there's no possible way with a lineup like that they could screw it up so badly unless they did it on purpose. Now I can watch the rest of the movie knowing they're not holding out waiting to issue a better version 4K

Off topic, but I would love to hear your overall thoughts about animation on 4K and whether it's worth upgrading over Blu-ray. I know you weren't a big fan of the transfers for Ghost in the Shell and Shrek, so I would love to hear your take on other hand drawn and early 3D animation titles on the format.
Wow I thought The Sting looked super sharp at times. I also saw it hitting near 100Mbps. It definitely had some misses, but I felt some scenes looked super crisp
As for the grain, the only things that survive are 35mm prints that are several times removed from the 16mm AB negative. Unless something better eventually surfaces, which is very unlikely, this is the best that THHE will ever look. While grain will be there regardless, the question is is the grain so heavy that it interferes with the picture. The other option would be to DNR it shitless, since there is still no foolproof way to remove grain without removing detail. At that point though, it would look awful. While I will eventually get the 4K, I can’t really see how much could be culled from such a low-quality source.

I already have the U.S. Steelbook, but IMO there's several "problems" with the arguments against The Sting on 4K: First, George Roy Hill never really intended The Sting to look "clean" as in a fresh-looking 1970's film; he was looking more at the 1930's or even older. Indeed, he wanted to shoot the movie in B&W at Academy ratio like a 1930's film; Universal wouldn't approve that but did allow him to open it with their 1930's logo. Second, it was NEVER gonna look as good as My Fair Lady, another Best Picture winner that hit 4K Blu-ray at the same time (and even though MFL is 8 years older), because MFL was shot on 65/70mm film stock; The Sting was on ordinary 35mm stock. Finally, though Hill intentionally gave the movie an older feel he *also* used a lot of optical "page flip", dissolve, and other transition editing effects common in the 1970's; those kind of effects are hard to restore digitally because they almost always require at least one additional generation of film copies beyond the original negative. Maybe it was disappointing to Jeff, but not everything can or should look like it was shot yesterday on an iPhone. 😉
Without googling all the winners, the only ones I can vouch for are: The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) Lawrence of Arabia (1962) My Fair Lady (1964) The Sting (1973) The Deer Hunter (1978) Gandhi (1982) Unforgiven (1992) Schindler’s List (1993) Forrest Gump (1994) Braveheart (1995) Gladiator (2000) Argo (2012) Moonlight (2016) The Shape Of Water (2017) Green Book (2018) Parasite (2019) Also, the Godfather movies are allegedly being worked on for a 2022 UHD release. For arguably the definitive home video format, there are lots of big titles missing.

But like me, you certainly didn't miss the Columbia Classics 4K set which so far is the only 4K release of LoA & Gandhi.) And yes, I knew the Godfather trilogy (I & II both won) was in the pipeline. The sad part is there's still five Best Picture winners not even on 2K Blu-ray yet -- The Broadway Melody (1928/29), Cimarron (1930/31), The Great Ziegfeld (1936), The Life of Emile Zola (1937), and Around the World in 80 Days (1956) -- plus two released on 2K Blu-ray *only* outside the U.S., Hamlet (1948) & Ordinary People (1980). And it's not JUST lack of an HD master; though some of them are crappy transfers (the only Blu-ray of Ordinary People, in Australia, is from the same crappy transfer as Vudu's copy), of those seven only Emile Zola isn't available in HD on purchased streaming platforms. Also, several other winners from It Happened One Night (1934) to the just-won Nomadland (2020) -- including several former United Artists releases now owned by MGM -- are now in 4K on streaming, but only on 2K Blu-ray. 🤬

When will ALL the 007 movies and ALL the Star Trek movies come to 4K?
Bond will probably come out next year for its 60th anniversary. WB owns its home entertainment rights
Let’s hope so. Bond on 4K will be Day One. Hopefully Goldeneye is fixed, all movies are in their OAR, and they include the unofficial movies too (Casino Royale 54, Casino Royale 67, Never Say Never Again).
Is SAW 4K the US unrated version? I love SAW franchise but refuse to buy censored releases. Often HD transfers are taken from censored US R cinema prints for the quality. ☠
Django is REALLY expensive! Is it really worth that price if we don't really care about spagetti westerns???
Jesus, how much information do you need to be able to make your own decision 😄
He's given you all the information he can: the video is 10/10, the audio is the way it was intended and the packaging is great, too.
Only you can decide if that deal is worth the price to you or not.
@@user-sr2wv1ol6e It is a common debate amongst Blu ray collectors about the quality of the physical releases vs the streaming releases. Just because you don’t understand that, doens’t mean my comment/question is out of place. Go be a troll elsewhere kthxbai.
@@Onibabayaga I know everything necessary regarding blu ray, streaming, bitrate, etc. as I have decent collection on my own and sometimes encode and remux for myself.
He didn't mention anything regarding streaming and neither did you. You didn't ask if it's worth the upgrade from dvd, streaming etc. You just asked if the 4K blu ray is worth the $40.
For that you need information regarding video & audio quality, packaging AND how much you like the movie AND your own budget preferences. He's given you the first 3. The last two are up to you ;-)
Cheers.
Waiting on that Indiana Jones box set review. 😁
Ditto I’ve got the steel book on preorder
Same here.
For me i hate short video, i like more indepth opinions its value people that like short video are people that don't look at reviews or give reviews thks

Italian Giallo = GEE-ALLO. Django is amazing.
Shame is not new django

Hey Jeff I’m a big fan thanks for keeping the collecting community alive! I have a video request. I don’t know if you think it’s good enough to do for a RUclips video but maybe you could do a TickTock on it at least. I’m a big fan of the My Girl movies two of my favorites growing up. If I remember correctly you have the Mill Creek double pack. Could you do a video for that set? blu-ray.com says that it has bad video and audio quality compared to the Sony releases but the Sony releases are a bit hard to find these days I just wondered if they were actually being truthful or if they’re exaggerating because sometimes the reviewer‘s there can do that. Thanks man.
