  • Six Flags Magic Mountain and Cedar Point have been doing battle for decades, trying to one-up each other in the roller coaster arms race. So....who won? Or should I say, as of 2022, who's winning? Let's break it down using coaster battles.

My main gripe with the coaster battles is that the battles for categories like RMC hybrids and mega coasters are worth as many points as the battles for mine trains, junior coasters, etc. I know it's in good fun but I'm like there should be a more in depth scoring system or something.

    • @AirtimeThrills

True BUT if they're both really good they cancel each other out. I didnt think any of the matchups were so lopsided it deserved 2 points, other than possibly MF over Goliath

@@nafspark I agree that X2 should have only gotten 1 point. Sure it's a major ride but you could argue that you should have run it up against Gatekeeper since they are both "winged" with riders on sides of the track. X2 would have won, leaving Tatsu behind as the extra coaster. While tatsu is amazing, I don't think anyone is saying it deserves more than one point. Especially since in the system established in the video coasters never got more than 1 point. I understand half and quarter points for the Wild Mouse and Kiddy Coasters. But if Millennium Force and Steel Vengeance are only getting 1 point, X2 should never be allowed to get more than 1 point.

I’ve been to Magic Mountain four times in the past few weeks, and almost half their major coasters are closed. But what people don’t realize is that we are in the off-season. I went from complaining about ops to understanding that we’re fortunate the park’s even open year round. I was at Magic Mountain back in August and every single coaster was open. Of course, people who buy day passes are getting screwed without fair warning, but aside from that, I can’t really be too mad.

It seems like the ranking system should be more weighted like what you did for the extra coasters, because the amount of separation between Millennium Force and Goliath should be counted way more than between Ninja and Iron Dragon. Well said! Magic Mountain has some unrivaled variety with the B&M flyer, invert, floorless, and Standup, good Arrow Coasters (X2, Viper, Ninja, Goldrusher), a Schwarzkopf Looper, a GCI, a dueling RMC, a Giovanolla hyper (which is a rare type in my opinion seeing as only 2 were built), whatever type of coaster Superman is (last of it's kinda operating), and guess what they still have more. CP clearly has superior rides/layouts but less one of a kind rides. Gemini is actually one of their more rare types as is Magnum XL 200. The only other Arrow Hypers I know about is Pepsi max Big One and Desperado. The only other Arrow Custom Steel Coaster I know of is Excalibur at Valleyfair! However, the message of this video and comments section should be that if you haven't been to both Parks, you need to! They are both amazing in different ways!

I can't get over how solid each Magic Mountain coaster is they are all very unique and powerful. Except Scream and Goliath. But out of the 16 thrill and extreme coasters only 2 really stand out as being bad. Maybe Gold Rusher kind of sucks but it's just janky not super painful or unpleasant. Great video. These two parks certainly get a lot of debate. I vastly prefer Cedar Point's lineup because they have the quality on top, and I also actually prefer their supporting lineup too, but I get what this video is trying to go for. Only thing I will say is that I think X2 is overrated and not worth 2 points. I get that this would've ended the video in a tie but that's just what I think.
And yeah, once you take a look at these parks past just their coaster collections, it's really not a competition. The food, ops, atmosphere, landscaping, employees are all better at Cedar Point. Like way better. Like, I try to view my parks more holistically than just the rides, and I sometimes can't believe people even put these two parks in the same tier. Especially in the past few months, Magic Mountain has really taken a dive. The amount of closures on the average visit recently has just been ridiculous. That park needs help badly.

I've always felt it was so crammed, especially now with 20 coasters. The layout too is just annoying to navigate with the giant hill in the center. The employees, food, and general crowd is hardly on the classy side. I've never even been to Cedar Point (only seen videos over the years), and I can already tell it's the better park. Twisted Colossus is my favorite coaster at Magic Mountain, and I'm hoping to get over to Cedar once and for all to ride Steel Vengeance, among their other elites.

Not sure if we'll see many major investments in either park for awhile. Wonder woman was a bit better than the CP wild mouse addition but Magic Mountain is plagued by adding sub par coasters just to maintain their status as coaster capital of the world and guess what, energylandia in Poland is right on their tail with 19. Cedar Fair I think has struggled since COVID and giving everyone a free year on season passes (while that was the most awesome thing anyone did and made me a life customer) probably hit them hard in the wallet. CP is down a few coasters - Wildcat, Dragster, and Wicked Twister. The wild mouse seems to take the place of wildcat in the lineup more than wicked Twister. Idk if we'll really see them get back up to their former amount of coasters or see a big investment in the park until modified dragster returns (and again isn't that just getting them back where they were before minus Wicked Twister?) So in general I did enjoy the video but below would be my changes -
    1. Riddler's Revenge blows Valraven out of the water. SOOOO much better and underappreciated. Length is the main factor and that I LOVE standup coasters. Valraven is just over way to quickly
    2. Jr Gemini (wilderness Run) vs Magic Flyer makes more sense to me. It would be a win for CP. I personally would prefer Jr Gemini because while they both are tiny and boring, it's clearly the better of the 2.
    3. As for left over coasters, I think you should only get 1 point for major coasters (same as ranking system) so I would give CP 1.5 for Gemini and Wild Mouse. I would give Magic Mountain 2.5 for Full Throttle, X2, and 2 lame kiddy coasters. I think the parks are tied in my ranking thanks to me throwing CP a bone with the Kiddy Coasters. However, if you left out the Kiddy Coasters and reduced X2 to 1 point, Magic Mountain still comes out on top because of the riddler revenge vs Valraven.

  • @dafrog55
    @dafrog55 Год назад +7

Ooh. My gripe is 2 points for X2. Yes it's rare, but only because the original manufacturer was so inept at their job (I shouldn't say inept, more like unwilling to adapt) they went under before more could be built and had to rely on someone else to fix the problem not shortly after opening. So honestly it's a tie for me. I also felt the quarter point for the extra kiddie coasters was a nice balancing act.

    • @zacg_

I think it gets two points because not only is it rare but it's a super elite coaster. In terms of intensity the only thing that rivals it is I305. And in terms of a wild coaster experience it is unrivaled in North America with the only real competition being the S&S giant 4D coasters and Ride to Happiness.
Think about it this way: if Twisted Colossus didn't exist and Steel Vengeance didn't have a comparable coaster at Magic Mountain, I'd argue that it would be fair to give Cedar Point two points for it. So in a way, giving Steel Vengeance the point over Twisted Colossus is mathematically equivalent to giving two points for Steel Vengeance and one point for Twisted Colossus. What I'm saying is that it makes sense to give more points to the exceptionally great coasters and X2 is absolutely one of those. And I'd go as far as to say that the only two coasters between the two parks that are in that echelon are Steel Vengeance and X2.

Amazing hang time on Full Throttle, Awesome GCI with Apocalypse, fun and unique multi-launch with WCR, fantastic large and smooth B&M looper with Riddler, Bat clones are always good inverts despite being clones, Viper is arguably the best or second best Arrow looper behind Tennessee Tornado.

Also, I usually agree with you on coasters, but I just don’t understand the love for magnum. I’ve ridden it a few times on 2 separate trips, and on every ride I just wanted the thing to end. The triangle hills brutally crushed my thighs. I heard someone say stapling yourself with your seatbelt minimizes the pain. I’m going to try that if I get out there again. I really want to like that ride, but I just don’t. I love X2’s insanity and steel eel’s forces, which I would think is similar to magnum’s airtime, so idk why I’m not into magnum.

Ride Magnum in a row that's not over a wheel. So like rows 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, and you are safe. Row 5 will still give you great airtime, but not beat you up so badly coming into the valleys. Magnum is still a great ride.

And now I've lived in Los Angeles for the last 30 years and Magic Mountain is 20 minutes from my house. I feel very fortunate that these two have been my home parks. They're both awesome. Cedar Point is the nicer all around park for sure... but we have X2... which should be worth about 50 points. And Tatsu. And Drop of Doom. Viper demolishes corkscrew. Ninja is way better than Iron Dragon. We also have year-round warm weather. And we're a progressive state, not a Republican state, which gives us more bonus points. But Cedar Point has Steel Vengeance and Millennium Force... and Top Thrill (but that's as we all know is currently out of commission). I've been to both parks this year. Cedar point is the better park for sure... but Magic Mountain also rules. They are both top of the pile parks. Love 'em both. But Magic Mountain has the only 4D coaster in the country.
