Johnny vs. Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 25 авг 2024
- The original style returns as you take control of Simon's ancestor, Trevor Belmont. Dracula is terrorizing Europe, and with the help of 3 companions, it's up to you to defeat the Prince of Darkness once again and rid Transylvania of the curse. Whatever it is. It's Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse for the NES.

"Bad world full of evil" Sounds like something my little nephew would say
Hey, at least you can understand what they mean unlike the dialogue in Simon's Quest
could also be a trump-speech
"It is 1500's Europe, and here Dracula's at it again. It's up to Trevor to put up with the horribly retarded obstacles Dracula throws at him. It is very dark outside. EVIL!"
@@lobstersteve6286 I was actually going to say it sounds like every anti-Trumper describing the world they believe Trump is creating
Or Rey from rise of skywalker.
To be fair, Trevor really is a cooler sounding name than Ralph.
Starscream91 yeah I hate be that guy
I dunno man, Trevor sounds like a wimp and Ralph sounds like a fatty. Neither are good warrior names. Neither has that oldtimey sound, yknow?
wreck it Ralph
Agreed
@@KairuHakubi It has the same connotation as "très fort" which means very strong in French. More fitting if you ask me.
How ironic.
The American version was harder than the Famicom version, despite the HELP ME password.
Also includes passwords to start the game with the partners. It's really fun to play characters in stages they weren't meant to be playable in.
“The boss fights are the highlight, more than the first and second games combined”
So more than the first game by itself then
Fr tho, but to be fair they got that fight with the reaper... That you can just skip
...balls of destruction. that is all.
+leon2550 Great balls of Destruction!
Holy balls of destruction, Batman!
Also known as ”Balls of steel”-Duke Nukem
"Could you please leave my testicles alone"
1:25 the fact that the castlevania anime was actually able to make this part of the plot work is a miracle
The one thing I was sad they never put into the anime was Grant. Would've been fun to watch him climb walls and shoot knives
@@victorhugocosta1127my best guess as to why they didn't add Grant is because they didn't want to make a comic relief character for such a dark and gritty show
The localization for this is legendary. "Balls of Destruction". "Grant Danasty"
Wait. Dracula's third form is a giant man-bird?
Dracula is a Chozo confirmed.
Dracula as Pazuzu.
NintendoEntertainmentSystem&PlayStation1 This was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw that form
Well, he has to get those forms somehow. Normal Dracula, Mocos Dracula, and Avian Dracula.
AdmiralOctopus ooooOOOOOHHHHHHHHH
That is kinda wierd, someone should do a metroid/castlevania crossover. We could call it Metroidvani- wait a second
If you're stuck, just use the AGA method.
A - Akumajou Densetsu
G - Grant
A - Axe (and Knife)
Grant in the Japanese version is like an ultra easy mode. Seriously, being able to knife and axe at the same time, combined with his amazing agility and ability to stick to walls, and the game is suddenly easier than Super Castlevania 4. I completely suck at classic Castlevania games and still managed to beat it.
That's the supreme truth my friend. I've been playing the game, and I just can't believe how much easier the game is with him.
+Zachary Jones I wonder if that's the reason he was nerfed in the international release
Mario Tomic Most likely. Even in the American version, he's still the easiest to beat the game with.
I think this is also the reason why Grant was in the clocktower. Take a slight detour and beat this incredibly hard stage and we give u "easy mode".
@@louiscalaunan5857 now that i think about it.....thats true.
this was a great game. i beat it...died a shitload of times and rage quitted even more than that, but i beat it.
+Troy Turner Castlevania games are Rage Quit games.
Agreed!! LOL
I know this comment is a few months old, but rage quit means he stopped playing out of frustration, not a direct insult to the game itself, Mr.Luigi.
Hell, I HAD a secondary character.
this game is fukking brutal
Johnny’s reaction to the stairs at 5:09 reminds me of
(Little spoiler for Avengers Endgame)
Hulk when he has to take the stairs instead of the elevator.
“Hate the stairs.”
“So many stairs!”
“NO STAIRS!!!”
Also reminds me of Po from Kung Fu Panda
johnny it actually does make sense that the monsters do more damage as you get closer to Dracula I mean wouldn't you protect yourself with the best of them
finalfantasylord1 I think when he was saying that, he was reffering to the exact same monster types dealing more damage. In most games (Zelda 2, Later Megaman games, etc.) Late game or final level stages will typically be filled with recolored or entirely new enemies, to show the player that they are more of a threat than what they've faced so far. With these enemies no changes aside from the damage they give are made, and it just comes off as lazy.
Does it make sense that a fleaman/hunchback does as much damage as an axe to the face?
D MAS In real life, no. In a video game, absolutely.
You fail to explain why it makes sense in a videogame. Or you made a typo and meant to say "In real life OR video games, no"
D MAS It's a joke about how video games never follow logic.
The stiff control on Simon & Trevor in the NES games is completely on purpose. It's supposed to be realistic (for the 8-bit era), hence the wind-up on the whip and the lack of directional control with jumps. This made it so that the difficulty wasn't just about the enemies you were facing but also your skill & familiarity with the character & weapons you were using. Demon Souls, Dark Souls & Bloodborne are modern day examples of this type of gameplay.
thing is, I don't think anyone cares about realism in an NES game filled with enemies someone made because they were too lazy to make a new type. Not to mention difficulty around controls is NEVER a good thing, especially if the enemies could beat mario enemies in a foot race.
As for the souls series, their controls can at least make sense, since there is no platforming Nor combat with enemies capable of attacking anymore quickly than you can attack them as well as the ability to... you know... block
+aekprr Or just use Grant in the third game.

8:58 Wow it's amazing how much youtube changed... and this is after getting rid of video responses and 5 stars.
It's like Donald Trump wrote the prologue himself. Dracula is very, very, very, bad. Transylvania is a disaster. The Belmont's are tremendous. Believe me.
Miserable little pile of secrets. Believe me. Tremendous.

the castle is yuge, believe me.
I was thinking it sounds like a leftist telling a story about Trump if Trump was Dracula

Johnny needs to get the man who made those stairs in the Castlevania games and push him down those stairs. And then his legs will be broken and he will no longer be able to make those stairs again! It will be ironic! Then his wife will live him for the man who made elevators in videogames. Cause everyone knows the elevator is sexier then stairs. And he's still not to the top yet WHY ARE THERE SO MANY STAIRS?!?!?
Hey c'mon, don't be so hard on him what's wrong about so- *has flashback* OMFG! THE GUY WHO MADE THOSE STAIRS SHOULD BURN! GIVE HIM DEATH! *DEATH*!
it was the NES
If you're saying that's we have to let it slide because it was the nes, even though i partially agree with you, there are some unforgiving hard games in other consoles as well, it is rare nowdays but they still exist.
***** true
Yu-Gi-Oh! Abridged reference FTW!
Wasn't there a descendent of Syfa in Aria of Sorrow?
Yep. Yoko Belnades.
And she's just as awesome.
Isn’t every Belmont after Trevor a descendant of Syfa?
@@thevenom2731 Pretty much, plus most female characters besides Shanoa have ties to the Belnades clan somehow, Maria Renard and Charlotte Aulin specifically I'm pretty sure
3:24 Sfa's physical attack is very useful because unlike Trevor it swings in a 90 degree ark making air born enemies much easier to kill
So does the axe
The closer you are to the main villain the stronger the guards become is logical.
Not when they're the same enemies as in the earlier levels but suddenly harder.
00:48 I'M GONNA WRECK IT!
It’s the GODDAMN STAIRS!
This has got to be my favourite nes game
Harry cubeguy Mega Man 6 for me
Dracula’s third form looks a lot like a Chozo honestly
It's supposed to be a Pazuzu
Based on the writing of the opening, sounds like even Trevor's 3 year old son is pissed at Dracula for not returning the lawnmower.
2nd best Castlevania only beaten by Rondo of Blood.
Huh so this is where the castlevania Netflix series gets the characters from.
And some of the plot and pacing as well, but then season 2 onward drops a TON of original characters and stuff into the mix.
The entire Block 9 almost beats Stage 6 on Ghost N Goblins when it comes to unforgiving difficulty.
6:45 That's a Cronenberg.
I agree with you. In fact, I like the controls of the oldschool games. They make you think about how you should attack and jump at the right time.
8:58 Look at that beautiful yellow sub button! I miss that thing.
Love the review and thanks for the shout-out! :D One thing to take into consideration, even with famicom->nes converter (like the one found in some Gyromites), the music of Akumajou Densetsu will not work on an American NES correctly. I believe the game should still work, but it'll have missing audio channels. The NES was not made to support audio expansion like the Famicom. You can modify the NES to get expansion audio working, but only with the ROM via the powerpak, not the original game cart.

🎵Dracula, I'm coming to your castle!
I'm gonna slay you, say your prayers, I'm on my way
I'm Trevor Belmont!🎵
dying for a remake up this.
Someone was doing a fan remake called Super Castlevania 3.. but haven't seen an update in ages.
johnhasaguitar I really love this game. I am currently playing it, I didn't finish it yet. It's hard as balls, but also really fun! A remake of the game would be perfect. I loved Dracula X Chronicles (Rondo of Blood remake). The only thing I would change is that I would bind a button for special attacks, because up+B is a pain in the ass when you stand next to stairs. Other than that, it's an amazing game, and definitely worthy for a remake.
Then Bloodstained: Curse Of The Moon is the game for you.
Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon is Castlevania 3, but way better.
Oh I know you raged, Johnny. I just saw you doing it again on the SGB channel. Goddamn, I laughed a ton during that let's play.
The nandugger
People who say that they beat this game fast and it was easy, STOP IT!!! Anyway, Johnny, I wonder how the difficulty scales now after completing Ghost and Goblins, Mega Man Classic Series, etc. Maybe a top ten list of hardest NES games are in order?
In his review of the first Megaman game, he said that it's not as hard as Castlevania 1 or 3, but it can be close at times. I agree, as Megaman is the hardest megaman game I've played (Megaman 2 and 3 are a bit easier, and currently, Megaman 6 may be the easiest).
I'm currently attempting to beat mega man II. FUCK. FIREMAN.
Mega Man games aren’t nearly as hard though
ruclips.net/video/Y9nDagqKL7Q/видео.html
Yeah I hate people like that too who just have a pride complex they want to shove on other people.
People have told me that SMT Nocturne, Zelda 2, the Mega Man Zero games and Kingdom Hearts II on Critical in addition to this game and Ecclesia are "not that hard" Fucking please.
megaman was never that hard for me, except the wily stages when I was a kid
Just finished the US version without save states. Last few stages were brutally hard. Use of Syfa's spells made last two bosses much easier though. Very hard but at the same time very rewarding game :).
So after rewatching this review I had a realization. The castlevania show on N etflix uses this game as a rough template. The intro to the game. Trevor, selfa and alcuard. I may be late to this realization. But I think it's neat nonetheless.
Yeah it’s a direct adaptation of Castlevania 3, but they did grant dirty.
5:10 Goddamn stairs button
The stiff control makes you strategise and worry about the lvl design and enemy placement.
10:10 JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 7: *Steel Ball Run* Spoilers
2:25 RIGHT IN THE NOSTALGIA.
Well Alucard is both the son of Dracula and a human woman, Maria. Apparently Alucard's sympathies lie more with his human mother than his demonic father, who simply considers humans a source of food or other types of carnal pleasure. The whole patricide theme I sort of find one of the more fascinating strands in the Castlevania lore, its as old as Oedipus and coincidentally recurs in Konami's other Metal Gear franchise.
Well, translated weirdly or not, the ungrateful country needing a Belmont's help is kept so far in the Netflix show...
Omg a Castlevania review and a Legends of the Hidden Temple reference ? Amazing
8:56 god that RUclips layout makes me feel old.
Honestly, I like the 4 year old story. We need more of that shit
So I am about to clean my room, so I put your review playlist on shuffle and I'm about to have a grand time
OMG!! i almost choked to death when he said "balls of destruction" hahaha XD!
Your intro make me remember Duando and brando
Sometimes I still find it really hard to believe I actually beat this game as a 10 year old with no cheats or codes or... anything really. That ending though. Omg that was epic. :)
it reminded me of yellow gum, idk why, but it did, I was like 6 years old, and I always saw one kid chewing it in the show
Great review! I am surprised about your final score. I expected higher like 8.
I am currently playing the game, I learnt some patience by other Castlevania games, so I don't find that frustrating. It's all about learning and practising. My only complaint is the usage of sub weapons. Well, usually, pressing up and attack is OK. But when you are next to a stair and you want to use your attack, you are fucked. I just passed through level 6. It was hard. And I died a lot because I pressed up + attack and instead of attacking, it just walked up the stair... I know, NES controller is pretty limited by the number of buttons, and Super Castlevania IV fixed this problem with the shoulder buttons.
Oh, and thanks SomecallmeJohnny for mentioning the Japanese soundtrack. I had it all the time on my computer in NSF format, and I didn't even know about it!
Well believe it or not, this much difficulty can be an problem.
"Dracula can be quite random." --Johnny, 2011
Kids today will never know the frustration...the pain in the thumbs ....

Happy Anniversary Review!
Come on, no one is singing Brand0.
the belmonts were powerful and feared hence being banished. fortunately the people found one to battle evil for them. it's easy to understand even for a child
Great review once again johnny! looking forward to the next one!
6:52 so we went from Dracula, to an eggsecute, to a chozo
This game is REALLY hard. I'm a big Castlevania fan and have beaten almost every Castlevania I've played (which is a lot). But I swear this one is nearly impossible. I haven't even come close to beating it yet.
Play the Japanese version if necessary. It's alot more tolerable.
Also not all gyromites have the famicom adapter. It has to be a 5 screw and it has to have off center pins. and you will notice the weight is a touch heavier. As a mater of fact check any and all black label 5 screw games for this list of prerequisites. It can be found in more than gyromite.
I like this game more than the original because of the lenght and the music.
Oh my god.. Seeing that one clip of "Shrine of the Silver Monkey" makes me want to watch that show again..
While I’m okay with either of the names Trevor and Ralph, the worst name you could give someone is Trefor.
Even worse, Treffy
is it weird that alucards sprite reminds me of Hercule satan lol
How dare you!? Hercule would not stoop so low as to use obvious cheap special effects and parlor tricks!
Dracula's just lucky Hercule doesn't yet exist. If he was able to defeat Cell with ease, Drakky would stand no chance.
3:07 I think the reason the belmont family is so terrible at jumping is due to the heavy armor they wear. It makes it hard to control where they land due to the weight. It’s plausible but doesn’t make it any less stupid in a world where hearts are used as currency and power
Hey johnny just found you channel and i'm enjoying the content, keep it up :)
8:58 Ah the old channel design! The good old days!
Good review (despite the harsh end rating), but I have one problem with it: the NES version's gameplay is actually significantly more refined than that of the Famicom. In that version, Grant breaks the game in half, spits on it, and proceeds to take a rather large dump on the remains. The projectile daggers in conjunction with the axe makes dispatching enemies way too mindless. Combined with his wall-climbing and controlled jumps, cruising through levels is a real possibility, in a similar extent to Maria Renard in Rondo of Blood. Not to mention, the NES version deals with the Famicom version's issue of levels having stretches with no, or far fewer enemies, such as the pendulum room before the battle with Dracula and the section after your first bout with the Bone Dragon King in the Sunken City. The challenge it introduced is welcome, as the Famicom version is one of the easier Classicvania titles.
The challenge is NOT welcomed.
I KNOW, I FUCKING KNOW. The challenge is part of what makes the older Castlevania games great.
But the example you put in the pendulum room is what makes the Famicom version better. That pendulum room is fucking CHEAP. Throwing enemies that will most likely kill you in mid jump because you did not see them coming and can't do shit to avoid them in that mid jump is NOT a fair challenge.(In a nutshell, being more aggravating and player hostile doesn't equal fair challenge)
Although balancing out Grant IS an improvement, I can give you that.
VladNorris(Draftsman)
While that section before Dracula demands quick reactions and practice, it's never unfair, just like the rest of the game on normal mode. In fact, the only time I'd really call the game cheap is on hard mode in the last part of the Sunken City (Alucard's Path), where the overwhelming stream of bats and fishmen combined with the rising water leaves absolutely no room for error. The skull heads that replace the medusas also make certain sections (particularly, Block 7-06) much more luck-based than I would like. Anyway, the room in the NES version also fits the pace and difficulty set by the rest of the level better than the Famicom version does; sometimes I wonder why they even included the room in the Famicom version, since it's just so easy. You could say that it builds up tension to Dracula, but I find that the room with the staircase that leads up to him, with Overture playing in the background, does that well enough. Speaking of Dracula, his final form in the Famicom version is hilariously easy, since the lasers that he shoots are so short. Dracula as a whole is pretty easy in the NES version as well, especially if you use the axe, but at least his last form puts up a bit more of a fight.
The only elements of the Famicom version I would say I like better are the music as a whole (even though the NES version is still awesome in that regard, and certain tunes, like Rising, are better), and the fact that Alucard's bat form didn't consume hearts quite as quickly. Grant is so OP'd in that game, though, that there is no reason to use Alucard anyway.
Ronniethesage
Well that's the way you see it, in my opinion anything you can't see coming/unavoidable that may cause you to lose health it's cheap.
What some people find hard or cheap, others find easy and/or challenging.
Scissorman Nothing that can't be bested with some sharp reflexes. The game is all about platforming and reflexes.
Getting to Dracula used to be hard. It was an honor to place your eyes upon him.
saw this review on the suggestion bar.
Instant sub!!
Awesome vids man, can't wait to watch them all.
4:48 Truer words have NEVER been spoken.
3:49 Anyone else pause to drool over that picture? I sure did! ^-^
Dracula putting hidden pork roast since the good old 15th century
I 'mustache' you, DO YOU REALLY BELIEVE THIS, THIS ISN'T EVEN MY FINAL FORM
0:56
Maybe they changed it due to the fact that Ralph was the name of a kid in the Simpsons.
Dracula: “appears”
Ralph: “Hehe, I’m in danger”
To be fair, SMB 2 USA was just a re-skin of Doki Doki Panic due to the localization team thinking that the the Lost Levels was too hard.
Before I forget, the oldest NES carts like Super Mario Brothers or the Legend of Zelda have a converter built in. You just dissect the cart, and lo and behold, there's a famicon converted attached to the circuitboard that holds the famicon game.
the second form of dracula is the demon legion, often shown as a collection of heads.
Alucard: Stand down, or I shall be forced to unleash my Balls of Destruction upon you.
@hawawa675
I have two games left. Super Castlevania IV and Castlevania Bloodlines.
love the legends of the hidden temple clip joke
The orbs are explosives, and Trevor plants them all at the bottom of Castlevania after you kill the Dracula, letting them all detonate at the same time.
Where does he store them?
He does look exactly like Luke Wilson holy crap
that show was Legends of the Hidden Temple. it was on a channel called Nick Gas, and i loved every minute of it
awesome game, nes games are hard, back then you had to learn by trial an error
One could extend the metaphor all the way to the landed nobility, who'se existence relied on the subjugation of a lesser peasant species. It might be that which Alucard was rebelling against, although interestingly his mother was burned at the stake by the very same class of peasant/townsfolk.
I finally beat this game twice, it's the greatest thing I've ever done
I know you're obviously younger but your voice sounds sooo different to how it is now to the point where i thought it was a different person lol
I beat this game without the help me code almost ripped my hair out with the final stage
Good god, Legends of the Hidden Temple. If I hadn't missed out on the time it was filmed (wasn't even born yet) and my severe acrophobia, I so would've tried out for the show.
The moment I heard "balls of destruction" an image of Alucard teabagging the fuck out of Dracula popped up in head.
How the fuck has "balls of destruction" not became an internet meme yet?
Dracula: What does my castle need we got death traps but what else... I KNOW RANDOM POT ROAST
The funny thing about the ending is that all 4 characters were supposed to have canocially beaten Dracula. Which makes zero sense since you can't encounter all three in any one path and you can't have a second non-Trevor character without one leaving.
...I guess if you want that 4v1 battle, Harmony of Despair with similar characters anyone?
I'm still scratching my head, all these years later, as to why they ramped up the difficulty in our version of the game..
Yeah. I don't get it either.
It’s pretty neat that now with the Anniversary collection on Switch, PS4, Xbox One and Steam, you can choose between playing the North American version and the original Japanese version.
OMG, you actually mention legends of the hidden temple in your reviews! :)
I find it interesting that Dracula and Alucard look more like the Bela Lugosi Dracula in the older games, since I'm more used to their Symphony of the Night appearances, which look more original.
Damn, this video is exactly five years old? Where did the time go? I remember I was 13 watching this review.
