On the question of what words to use to describe ABBA, in the 1970s they were THE supergroup. Even today each one of the four of them is worth $250-300 million. The two guys have been producing music for musicals and other shows since they broke up, like the musical 'Chess' for example.

'Waterloo' was their first hit after they won the Eurovision Song Contest in Europe with it in 1974. Every year countries from all over Europe compete in a televised competition for the best pop song, and winning for Sweden in 1974 launched ABBA's career. Another big international star whose career was launched by winning the Eurovision song contest was Celine Dion. She sang to represent Switzerland in 1988 when the contest was in Ireland. The winning country every year hosts the competition the next year. Ireland has won the competition the most times (7 wins).

Clothes were "glam rock" style and were the outfits Abba wore when they won the Eurovision Song Contest with Waterloo in 1974. This song launched their career worldwide.

This was more or less ABBA''s breakthrough by winning the European Song Contest in 1974! This song later was chosen at least twice to be the best song at the European Song Contest ever! :D

This is their first single in the early/mid 70s. It precedes disco music and fashion. The boys outfits are of the “Glam Rock” genre. If you listen to just the music, Waterloo is actually a rock song

I'll bet you will be excited to learn that Waterloo was an 1815 European battle in which the Emperor Napoleon was defeated, pretty much ending his military conquests. So, the term "Waterloo" has. come to mean one's downfall, or final defeat. I think.
The 90s group Ace Of Base reminds me of Abba a lot, you may want to check them out if you haven't yet.
Thanks for the entertaining, as usual, reaction!

Thanks for sharing your ABBA journey. You know before ABBA no groups, stars, hits or record labels could break out of the Swedish market. The country was ignored on the world stage. Before ABBA all the members were big stars in Sweden either in other groups or as solo artist. Then they began dating. At the same time the guy's were put in charge of "Polar Music" a record/recording company. When they formed it was all about breaking into the world market. So it was about being noticed. They knew the music was good. So they did crazy customs cutting edge costumes, arty but low cost music videos, "they kinda invented them" recorded in multiple languages and shipped them all over the world. It worked. and was copied many times in the 80's on MTV. You should react to "ABBA - SOS - Live at Seaside Special" ----> ruclips.net/video/aNESujMM7m4/видео.html So you can see them in their cat dresses, talk about getting noticed. But it's also a good live clip.

    Hello again Emily!
I am very pleased that made your reaction to ABBA's "Waterloo"
And happy that you enjoyed it
I'm going to make some contributions to the song and its context so that You understand the scene and its importance
ABBA had some success in its part of Scandinavia
Her manager was convinced that to have international knowledge it was best to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest
ABBA failed to qualify for 1973 (their song "Ring Ring" came third in the Swedish qualifier)
But in February 1974 he did win it and thus was able to represent Sweden in the final in England.
At that time it was a classical song contest, mostly soloists or duos with an orchestra
The songs could not last more than three minutes
The last six editions of Eurovision had been won by female soloists
and Sweden had never won it
All this had been studied by the ABBA manager
The manager bet big on everything:
    they sang in english
they put together a little choreography (which starts with the girls running to the stage)
They wore an eye-catching wardrobe according to the title of the song (which included the Swedish orchesta conductor)
    And the most important:
a disruptive song in the history of the contest (before and after)
    novel and revolutionary
    with an overwhelming rhythm
    and captivating,
    a very catchy chorus,
and two leading female voices that with harmony, power and joy, pierced and transcended television screen
here ABBA began to be massively known in the world
"Waterloo" was a great success in Europe: #1 in England Ireland Germany Switzerland Belgium Norway Finland and Top 10 in the other countries of Europe
but it was also successful on other continents:
#1 in South Africa #2 in Zimbabwe
#3 in New Zealand #4 in Australia
    #6 in U.S. #7 in Canada
    (among others)
The decisive importance of "Waterloo" is not limited only to ABBA's career
It was also an opening for the music of Sweden
And a new stage for the classic Eurovision
    more facts about "Waterloo":
    1) to the 50th anniversary of Eurovision in 2005 "Waterloo" was voted as the best song in all editions
    2) these week it's Eurovisión 2021
and in more new pools of Europe people voted "Waterloo" the best song in all of Eurovision history
    2) "Waterloo" was the closing song of the 1979 ABBA Tour ending in the UK
I believe that You did react to:
    The winner takes it all
    Dancing Queen
    Gimme gimme gimme
    Mamma Mía
    Waterloo
now I suggest You two ballad pop:
    "Fernando" or "Chiquitita"
"Fernando' is your second major hit; "Chiquitita" is your major hit in Latin América (and my country Argentina)
Thank you so much for your reaction; I hope to continue see you discover the magic of ABBA's songs
A cordial greeting to you from my country Argentina

The group is actually getting back together to create a few new songs after around 40 years.
As far as I know five songs have been planned and are supposed to be released some time this year.
I am very much looking forward to it.
Also there are two movies based on music by ABBA called Mamma Mia! and the sequel to that one.
All very much worth checking out.

Abba as you probably know are Swedish & there is a little-known Swedish law that allows significant tax relief for performers who wear clothes on stage that never could be worn in the street! As Abba from 1974 onwards were clocking up hundreds of gigs, that made huge savings for them!

If you listen to 'See My Baby Jive' by Wizzard, which was a Number 1 hit here in the UK just a year before Waterloo, you may notice a similar vibe. ABBA say this song was a major influence to them. So let's all thank Roy Wood from Wizzard.

And napoleon meet his Waterloo ( defeat) Waterloo final battle of the napoleonic wars and famous train station in London , the kinks Waterloo sunset is class , it's in central London by the river Thames , real Waterloo is in modern Belgium. Duke of Wellington ( the iron Duke) vs the French emperor napoleon bonaparte, but it's a very long story well hearing ( the war I mean)

Actually, in the 1970's, these outfits were not that crazy. Have you seen pictures of what people wore back then? I was in my 20's in the 70's and I was a very conservative dresser but some people wore really wild stuff! I'm sure you could find pics on the internet of some outfits that would shock you, including platform shoes and boots for both men and women. Wild patterns and colors, too. Oh, and don't forget the bell bottom pants for men and women, too! It was really the wild decade for clothing for sure.

      You had a mistake
ABBA recording "Waterloo" in both language, swedish and english, in December 1973
first ABBA compite in Sweden at Melodiefestivalen (February 1974) singing in swedish
after wining, ABBA go the final Eurovision in UK (April 1974)
      singing in english
      but in Sweden charts
      (combine singles and albums)
      ABBA have the Top 3:
      #1 Waterloo album
      #2 Waterloo swedish
      #3 Waterloo english

    • @stevored1989

The Swedish selection committe wouldn't accept any songs which weren't in Swedish, so they sang in Swedish to get selected. However, Brown, I think, noticed that the rules for the Eurovision song contest itself said that entrants could sing in any language they wanted irrespective of what rules each country's selection committed set. So they switched to English.
