- In this video, I show you how to install an Ididit steering column for A- body 68-72. I show you exactly what parts you need. Borganson universal joints, D-shaft. This steering column also works for a Camaro
Anybody with a GM A body should be watching this build…lots of great tips!
Thanks for the kind words..
all the best
Yes a lot of helpful nformation, currently bog down with body work on my chevelle.
I wanted to say how detailed and informative your videos are and appreciate the feedback ! Looking forward to seeing the final product.
Thank you !!
I'm happy you put out this video. I'm considering this for my 1970 Cutlass.
Glad you enjoyed the video. Ididit staff is very helpful. I'm sure they will answer your questions. All the best. Thanks for watching
Hi Harry, just watched your ididit steering column video, thanks for doing that. My 64 Chevelle also had an ididit column with a Unisteer rack system. The connection from the column spline to the rack has three u-joints plus a bracket that has a ball type joint that a short DD shaft passes through and then is bolted to the frame. It seems like a nice setup but I’m still troubleshooting a wandering issue. After a recent front end alignment I don’t feel the car pulling either way as I go down the road but it does want to wander left then right as I make slight corrections. If you or any of your subscribers have any comments please let me know.
Hi David, I will probably end up doing the three Universal joint set up just like you did. I want to make sure it's going to work with my exhaust system. Hopefully some of my subscribers could answer the question of your swing back and forth when you try to correct your steering. Looking forward to hear. All the best
Thank you, I will comment again when I get this figured out.
Great video. What size are the bolts for the upper bracket the 4 bolts that hold the column on the bracket?
Don't remember the size of the bolt but I think it was 5/16" × 1/2"
Another great how too I have disassembled my column and looking for parts. I do have question how are you going to do the natural safety switch?
Hi Scott, what type of transmission are you going to use? I am using TremecT56 manual. There's a neutral safety switch that gets connected to the shifter if I'm not mistaken through the wiring system. It's been awhile since I looked at it. I have not installed the tranny or engine yet. I hope this helps. All the best
@@classicrewind2715 I have not decided. but I have my column stripped down. Prepping for reassembly. I thought about a Ididit Column but the Cost had me looking for another option
Still have my original column from the 68 GTO. It had tilt steering, but I just wanted something new. Instead of rebuilding it I bought a new one. I will eventually sell my steering column. Did you ever figure out your neutral safety switch?
@@classicrewind2715 Yes going to be using the stock unit I thought really hard on a Ididit column, i noticed that they mention on the web site it will not work with a stock neutral safety switch. I was just wondering on how you were managing to configure it. I think I am staying with 72 Power train ( except for the Ford 9 inch with 3.70 gears) I got get the car on the road and enjoy it while I finish it.
I would call Ididit. Ask for Dominic I'm sure he can help you with the neutral safety switch.
Great Install video!
Thank you!!
I watched to see what the original non rack parts would be but non of that info, what size is the oem shaft, splines ,
All different steering columns have different splines. Go to a web search and put in what the car originally came with. That will tell you you're gear box ratio and how many splines your steering shaft came with.
Hope this helps over the best
The car is looking great! I am building a 1970 restomod and have used all ride tech components as you have. I’m also putting Baer brakes on and am curious as which brake kit you used and do you know what are the largest size rims and tires you can use without notching the frame?
If I'm not mistaken you can go up to 20 in Wheels. The tire size I am not sure, as I'm not at that stage of my build. Also what type of transmission are you using. I'm using 3.70 gears so for highway driving 18in wheels are recommended I think I'm going to do a 17in wheel.. right now I have 245-45 Wheels on the car just to move it around. I hope this helps. All the best
@@classicrewind2715 I’m going to be using a 4L80E tranny and planned on using 18”-20” rims. Im at about the same stage of the build as you are. The body is at the body shop I paint at and chassis is at garage at my house. One last question, what Baer brake kit did you use ? I watched your video but do not recall which one you used. I am in need of those now and plan on getting the Narrow superlight 6R big brake kit and curious if that’s what you used as well?
I used Wilwood brake kit. My rear is a Ford 9-inch. Made to fit my A- body. The Rear is from Speedwell, I had to use the Wilwood brake kit for a 2.5 offset I have a video on that when you get a chance check it out. ruclips.net/video/Dz5rUvJVaTY/видео.html
Every car I have worked on we make the adjustments to the headers, usually with a hammer and maybe some heat.
No plan for a collapsible shaft for safety?
I'm mocking this steering shaft up so I can move the car around. The DD shaft is a little thicker than the half inch Rod that I used as a temporary shaft. I won't know exactly how it's going to fit until I install my motor. The motor is Still on backorder from last April.
@@classicrewind2715 yea, got that. I was just commenting about my experience.
Good vid
Thanks
Did you glue the column seal to the plates?
Do you mean the one at the firewall? And if so, no I did not. I'm going to be removing it. I am going to paint the firewall everything is dry fit.
@@classicrewind2715 yes. i'm trying to decide if i need to glue it.
You shouldn't have to glue it. It gets compressed with the bracket. You might have a space at the steering column and the clamp itself if you're replacing the steering column too a new one. Because steering column is not as thick as the old ones. you get a space where it gets clamped together. If that is the case, just take some seam sealer and put some where you see your air gap. I hope this helps all the best
@@classicrewind2715 thanks
Wait what?
Hi Jethro, I hope you're doing well. it has been a while since we spoke. How is Ellie Mae and Grandma?
The car is coming along. As always love your videos they help me soo much with my 68' Chevelle build. What is the part number of the ididit steering column? I looked up one at summitracing with a part number of IDT-1120680051. I also found this part number IDT-1120680010 that is quite a bit cheaper and serves years 67 to 68. Can you provide the part number of the one you are using? The one I found, looks like it works for Camaro, Chevelle, Firebird, GTO, and a few others. Thanks!
Hi Steven. Thank you for the kind words. Hope you're doing well . The part number is 1120680010. I think it's classified as a Universal steering column. I bought steel and I painted. The reason is I know it's going to get scratched and dined up taking it in and out of the car as I'm getting it to work with the new steering shaft. All the best
@@classicrewind2715 Thank you so much!! I'm going to order the exact same one. Working on my firewall and want to replace the steering column at the same time.
Hi Steven,
when you order your steering column from Ididit ask for Dominic. reference me , he will help you. He is a very nice guy
