I was interested in the lion/dogs who were on either side of the entrance to the famous Chinese theater in Hollywood, California and the search brought me here. Thanks for the info. Actually, it was so much information that I need to watch it again to catch the details!
An old Korean legend tells of a nobleman who obtained a marble shishi guardian lion from his travels abroad. He brought the beautiful statue back to the seaside town he lived in. As the tale goes, the town was terrorized by a huge, fierce sea serpent. The people begged the gods for help. The nobleman was with the people when the monster attacked. The legend says the shishi came to life, grew big and faced down the serpent. The shishi let out a loud deafening roar which was followed by a huge stone dropping from the heavens and crushing the sea serpent to death. When it was over, the guardian returned to his original form. Thus, the Korean people have held the guardians in very high esteem.
Very weird. Ive been into katana for years. Always see the shishi motif. And literally just this morning was browsing swords and it dawned on me that I have no idea what a "liondog" is. Was about to look it up, but your video beat me to it. Thanks sir! Always learn a lot from your videos.
My mom has had these since I can remember she said a Asian lady was selling them and told her it was to protect her home and to aim them towards the door after watching Shang Chi the marvel movie remember having these
Hello sensei! I have a question today! So I'm entering a MMA tournament next year and I've been preparing and practicing since January because of covid. I plan to use my Jui jitsu instead of my muay Thai in most occasions since my grappling skills are better but can you do a video on grappling takedowns for people who are bigger and stronger than myself and others? Or something to work on kicking power?
You don’t believe in energy /chi /ki ? That’s confusing Mr Norcross could you explain why I believe in it it’s our very life force / consciousness I’m interested in what your take is please enlighten me as to what your conception is Respectfully Chris Banner
Hi. Yes, Energy in these forms: potential, kinetic, thermal, electrical, chemical, nuclear all are there. Is their "Chi" as in a magical, life energy? Well, the concept definitely strikes a chord in our collective consciousness and in is bolstered in our martial culture and mythos. If you are talking the "life force" that cannot be shown without bias or starting with a premise, scientifically, then I would need better evidence to then make a decision. My experience leads me to believe (but not know) that it is a subjective feeling but not empirical. Is there a "Ki power" in martial arts that can affect others with energy? In my opinion of forty years of searching and experience as a teacher, no. However, a belief in it literally has had no effect on my life either way. I remain open to it but have never been able to verify its existence in the way most people probably think of it. And sadly, I have seen dozens of charlatans and cons that victimize people for money using it for personal gain. Either way, we should all research and then decide what we want to ultimately believe. There are plenty of viewpoints out there for us all to choose. Thanks for your question, Chris.
Random fact I learned: if you see two lion guardians with both having a ball underneath their paw it’s a gay couple since female lion guardians have a cub under their paw
