    I've trained martial arts for about 3 years now (mma, bjj) and recently got a katana as a gift.
    This was my first drill with it..
    Thank you for you info.
    Going to a class soon
    Ps. What a workout!

    I dont practice swords much but I had injured my shoulder and something in my mind kept telling me to practice sword. I followed part of this warm up and my shoulder feels good. I feel a good amount of blood flow and exertion in the muscles. This will be good therapy.

    I've purchased the 2 kihon basic katana courses and Its been a life saver and your videos opened my mind about training beyond just training with a katana. Even during my work, I use my bosses broom stick practicing when I'm not at home. With no excuses, I still find a way to practice. Excellent video as usual Mr. Norcross!!!

    Your passion inspires me. Me watching this and seeing how much of yourself you give into training and classes and your views on helping the social dent as of the happening of covid, really spoke to me. Very interesting! I've been considering the art for a few years now, as something Completely different than the firearms that I normally train with and practice with! I like both your approach and your philosophy, and your easy way of getting your point across! Great trainers in the Army have the same easy and professional approach and teaching style as well and well-taught classes were always a great time (plus we were getting paid to be there, which is nearly unbeatable!)! Thank you for the video, I'm now a new subscriber!

    Thank you very much for the great introduction and practice of the katana sword. It has been a while since I've trained in the bujinkan arts here in nyc and my training equipment has been gathering dust for the past couple of months and maybe years. Of coarse, I do keep my space clean as often as possible, but depression and lack of motivation has set in. Your enlightening speech and motivation to find new ways and keep going lifted me right out of any lack of confidence or giving up on training that was dragging along. I can honestly say, that's what training is about and also life. I was training everyday at different locations and getting a good feel for how to apply the art in various areas and obstacles. I even train on my bicycle. Like you said, we are only limited to our imagination. You are right. You are speaking the truth. I feel we have the tendency to get stuck and not know what to do next. By taking the time to train, it will come naturally. That's what happened to me in my personal life. I was stuck and couldn't perform past a technique trying to apply henka within the practice of the kihon happo. Eventually I was able to progress a little bit at a time, as well as with every other training program. I'm still learning and will never stop. Your effort and time is much appreciated shidoshi. Have a great day and keep inspiring. Peace.

    I'm an unconventional samurai. Hikari no kaifuku Ryu main rules. Is to admit defeat in the face of victory. My sensei said in vrokwn English, always expect defeat. If you see you have lost at start. Yet refuse to give up or fail. Even death is a March in victory. Honor is key, humility is irrevocable. And as tiny as the sentiment is. When I realized what it meant. I didn't realize the power it held. In authentic kata. I took many cuts. One in the head. "MEN" if you expect. It has no effect but the mortal. The mortal is the plane in which you can maintain in thought and action.

    I noticed you say not to bring the sword too far back before slicing as this is only good for movies, but surely bringing the sword further back will allow more power as you will have more full body rotation behind the sword? Even with a sharp sword you'd still need some power to slice through flesh and bone.

    Wish I could see your foot movements, I always have trouble coordinating which side/lead foot I step forward and cut with...generally is it what ever side you cut from? Do you always have to change you're lead leg each cut? Thanks

    • @thedojomartialarts
      @thedojomartialarts  3 года назад

      Generally for power, yes. But it also depends on the distancing whether legs/feet are changed or move? Changing hip directions is good for practice. It keeps you constantly moving yourself as the target. You are 'harder to hit/cut' that way...
