Great instruction. IMHO too many non-Japanese instructors either over-emphasize or completely ignore the spiritual aspects of Japanese arts, whether it's Iaido to Shuji. Thank you very much.

Great explanation of basic Iaido techniques and their meanings, I really appreciate the way you explained it and demonstrated it.

Thank you for this. My iai club stopped formal training when we went into lockdown due to Covid, here in the UK. I was just a beginner, so felt uncomfortable with solo practice. There is no zoom or video guidance or training. We were just left to our own devices (or bokken/iaito). Anyway, I haven't done any practice because as I said, I haven't felt comfortable and know so little. It was nice to watch this and learn about these things though. I may not be able to practice due to lack of confidence in what I'm doing but I can at least learn some of the ideas and terminology behind practice. I really appreciate this.

Thank you so much for this wonderful instructional video. Since I work all day long and get home by 10 pm, I don't have time to learn at a club or at a dojo. Your videos are giving me an opportunity to begin learning alone at home with a bokken.

i have been recently training an upward slash of Furikaburi where i would draw the sword to the tip without twisting the blade with left hand and after the draw i would move the the tip in an upward 90 degree angle in order to catch the middle of the opponent's blade with the base of my blade as a defensive move. it is a new move for me, but i imagine it is giving me a Guard Broken opponent to cut open with my Kirioroshi, since a large part of blade is still open to attack despite the base being pushed back by the Opponent's blade.
i would like to know your opinion about it, should i focus my training on the upward slash Furikaburi or just return to the basics ?

So glad to be subscribed to this. I actually found a nice, round-edged daisho at Goodwill, of all places, and have been really interested in starting iaido as a discipline for mind and body (concurrently with reading "Soul of the Samurai," which is a translation and explanation of three 17th-century Japanese texts on zen and bushido). So while I'm looking for a dojo locally for me to practice with, I feel like this is really helpful for backyard practice. I appreciate you sharing the mentality behind the movements as well as the movements themselves. I just saw your reply to another comment below about your online/distance lessons, which I'll definitely look into. Seems like a really wise use of $10/month!
