  • Starting today the traffic flow across the Karuma bridge will be restricted to allow rehabilitation works.
Heavy trucks and trailers from the Northern and the west Nile region and vice versa will be re-directed allowing lighter traffic on the bridge. The Murchison falls National Park Road is one of the alternative routes.
We spoke to the UWA spokesperson Bashir Hangi on the new directive and their preparedness to handle increased traffic.
It’s the first day of the implementation of the Uganda National Roads Authority directive regarding the rehabilitation of the Karuma bridge that is expected to take about 3 months.
In an exclusive interview with UBC, Bashir Hangi the Public relations officer, Uganda Wildlife Authority said they are prepared to handle the traffic re-directed to the Murchison Falls National Park route.
He however emphasized the need for motorists to adhere to the protected area guidelines; These includes driving at a maximum speed of 40kms an hour, not littering and avoiding unnecessary stops in the park.
All vehicles entering the National Park will be required to pay the park entrée fee, except for those specifically prohibited from using the Karuma bridge as per the Uganda national roads authority directive.
Karuma bridge is currently closed to all lorries, trailers and buses. only passenger vehicles carrying up to 28 passengers are allowed to use the bridge. UNRA anticipates the intervention to be completed in 3 months.

Karuma needs a new bridge not just fixing the old one. Karuma needs a modern bridge and a four lane road. The Kampala to Gulu, to Arua needs four lane road not just two. The current government should stop behaving as if we are still in the stone age time where tribalism, and marginalisation of certain region is the order of the day.
All the businesses that flourished in Kampala is because of the outside regions who always drive to Kampala to buy merchandise and other products on a daily. Otherwise Uganda Railway need to be restored up to Arua and Nimule from Kasese.
