Kids, Covid, donkeys and street photography

- We were both stuck inside for three weeks due to a nasty dose of COVID-19, so it was great to finally get out and shoot some street photography.
We both tested negative a few days before the Easter weekend, and still feeling the effects of the virus, we decided to shoot locally. The video shows us shooting on Good Friday, Saturday and Bank Holiday Monday. Covid fatigue got the better of us on Sunday, so we took a day off (we never do that!!)
We shot with our usual Leica cameras; Sarah with her M Monochrom, and I had my Leica M9-P. With the Monochrom, Sarah used her 28mm Summicron, a combination she's used for years. In fact, she won't use anything else!!
Friday and Saturday, I worked with the Leica 21mm Elmarit-M ASPH and 35mm Summilux-M ASPH. Monday, I replaced my 21mm with an old favourite, the Leica 50mm Summicron. The lens forces a different mindset, and I think it's good to pop outside my comfort zone now and again.
I processed all the images in Lightroom with my SilverChrome Profiles and Presets. If you are interested in these, they are available from

If you have any questions about them, please let me know in the comments.

I like how you combine the filming and the inserted images into one video. This is how a moment (captured in a black and white photo) becomes something special. Great selection of motifs! The joy of taking photos comes across well and watching is just as much fun.
Thank you Monika. Your kind words are really appreciated.
Great images, love the video... Thank you both..
Thank you
There's a timeless quality to the B&W beach photos, beautiful stuff,
Thank you 🙏🏻
Good to see you were not using some wiz-bang, auto this and that, non creative version of a plastic camera so popular today. Leica M cameras make your think and compose and experience photography in a new and special way. Congrats on a wonderful video.
Thank you!! That’s why we use them.
Just beautiful photos. A feast for the eyes. Really gems. My respect.
I’m usually not moved by street photography, but I love your eye for composition, lines, geometry. Instantly subscribed!
Thank you so much. Glad to have you on board. 🙏
Really nice work . Great video!
Thank you 🙏
Sarah, I notice you like to hold your camera with the strap free, please try this. With your strap hanging around your head place your right hand through the strap from behind. Do a single twist of your right hand over the strap and then take the camera free of your head. Now if say someone knocked you and hand is released from the camera the camera falls but the strap tightens over your wrist and it does not fall to the ground. I was taught this using Nikon F over forty five years ago and used it all my career. It never failed. And, as ever you both have turned in an excellent set of memories.
Thanks for the tip Kevin. I do have it loosely wrapped around my wrist but I’ll give your method a try.
Nice POV footage, gives a context of how the images were captured. Very well produced video and music was suitably paced. Awesome stuff!
Thank you. That's very kind of you to say so.
I truly adore your work and every upload of yours is just a joy to watch. Cheers from Greece!
Thanks for your kind words Christos. 🙏🏻 We will have to visit Greece at some point.
Really enjoy these POV series. Excellent work. Hope you are able to keep them coming.
Thanks Catherine. We are hoping to do one at least once a month. We’re into spring now in the UK and there is much more to shoot.
thanks to share those awesome things! You're so inspiring to me.
Thank you, Giorgio. 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Love your videos and images you get some beautiful skies
Thank you. Yes, Mother Nature helps us out now and again. It’s quite spectacular if a storm is approaching from the west.
Such a god eye(s). Really beautiful photographs.
Thank you Bryan. That's very kind of you to say so.
Beautiful pictures and so fun to watch. Keep up.
Thank you !!
Cracking video and great images. You certainly know your town.
Thank you. Glad you liked it!!
Ahh now this is amongst the best of the videos I’ve seen. Several good good portraits taken spontaneously there. Engaging the subject and making a frame effortlessly. This whole video just felt like a feel good moment. Does Sarah zone focus and compose with the external view finder ? I hope you guys keep making content. I feel when Sarah engaged in conversation with people it really conveyed to the viewer the subjects frame of mind and the ensuing image was a capper.
Thank you. Sarah tends to focus when she can but when she’s on the move she will use zone focusing. She always uses the external finder to compose the shot.
Me encantan vuestras fotos!!!😍😍
🙏🏻🙏🏻
I, too, have had a nasty dose of the Plague. Over it now but still feel completely exhausted after the slightest thing. Must try to get out like you two!
It’s funny how it seems to affect people in different ways. Some friends of ours just had a sniffle. I was suffering for nearly three weeks. jeff
@@WalkLikeAlice Yes, my wife was much more poorly than me but she's as right as rain now 🤔🤔😂
Great video! Lovely Photos!
Thank you. 🙏🏻
Hi both
I’ve enjoyed your photos and the way Sarah engages with the public is a skill in itself I wcould develop that technique so I will Have to work on it. Is it easier for women to do this or down to personality A bit of each maybe.
Thank you. I think it’s more down to personality than gender. But, having said this, in our experience of running workshops, female photographers tend to have more confidence around people.
You missed a cracking image… the one of the horse trotting alongside the car… that would have been a really nice B&W
I’m not sure which image you mean. The one of the horse trotting outside the car window?
Great work!
Thank you
Most of these images are from the hip, right?
Some of Jeff’s images are. All of Sarah’s are taken with the camera up to the eye.
Nice moves at 3:42 :)
Haha. Thank you. Balletic I would say. Well, as far as an overweight middle-aged bloke can look balletic.🤪
@@WalkLikeAlice hahaha…. You’re in good company mate :)
@@WalkLikeAlice a great video btw.
Hi both, when I’m out and about in London and other cites I see lots of great opportunities for images where there are youngsters playing or dressed in fancy dress but I never take a shot because of fear of being accused of something I’m not , have you ever had any angry parent confront you about taking their kids pics without asking, unfortunately it’s a sad world we live in today and candid street images which include youngsters having fun are becoming less seen due to many factors these days , the few images I do have on my Instagram have been taken once I’ve asked permission which can obviously lose that unaware impact.
Hi John. I guess the first thing is to realise that whatever others think, you aren’t doing anything wrong. The law is on your side, and ethically people have been photographing kids on streets for a 100 years.
As long as you don’t harass or cause stress to the subject, there isn’t any issue.
For us, we have two different approaches. I prefer to avoid confrontation and take photos in such a way as to not draw attention to myself.
Sarah’s way of working is much more open. She doesn’t hide what she does and is always honest with people if asked. She’s always happy to give her business card. This shows she’s a professional and has nothing to hide or is doing anything underhand.
At the end of the day, how comfortable you are shooting kids or any other subject matter will determine your behaviour and body language. Most times the problem lies within the photographer’s head rather than the subject.
I agree with you regarding the current state of the world. Would Cartier-Bresson’s famous ‘Rue Mouffetard, Paris’ ever been taken if he had stopped and asked permission?
Jeff
Thanks for the great rep,y guys , I think I’ll get some ,ore up to date cards done then at least people can see what my street photography is about . Take care 🙏
I had a similar question about using people's photos in general in photo books or zines.. I see many street photo zines and I always thought you need permission for commercial purposes but there is no way anyone could ask hundreds of people in public for permission!
Hi what iso shutter aperture focal point please?
We don't have that information available to us with the cameras we use. Generally speaking, ISO will be between 160-320. Aperture mainly around f5.6 - f8.
@@WalkLikeAlice Thanks. Enjoy the day. Its meant to be sunny.
@@WalkLikeAlice Thanks.
@@thegroove2000 No problem.
Woow ❣❣ Amazing street photography from Japan
Thank you!!
The dog has my name?
Yes he does!!
