- Leo Carty (or Carthy) was an independent member of Wexford County Council (Ireland) for 49 years and served his constituents extremely well over that time. A hugely popular man, Leo was interested in all things historical, musical and maritime. A talented musician, he was a founder member of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann in Wexford. He wrote ballads; played the mouth organ, drums, spoons and accordion; and was renowned for mumming, lilting and whistling. During his wide and varied life, he met the Pope and two US Presidents. He also performed in front of Princess Margaret, and even enjoyed a brief, impromptu audience with the then King of Spain, two events that are referred to in this song. Leo passed away in September, 2010 at the age of 80.
The song was written by Irish singer-songwriter, Tom Williams. This performance - by the authort at a 'Tribute to Leo Carty' night at The Broadway Tavern in South Wexford - was the first timed it was played in public. For more on Tom Williams, visit www.tomwilliams.ie
