A unimog with a cummins engine would be perfect. You’re adventure looks like great fun, I enjoyed the video very much. Thanks for your efforts. Good that the beige rig was able to recover unscathed, well done.
The Unimog drivetrain is very carefully paired to the power output of the OM352 motor though. A cummins would be lovely, but a very low power-output model! I have seen people damage Unimog drivetrains by fitting high-torque or high-horsepower monsters, and then relying on engine power instead of gearing to get out of sticky situations.
@@DawidLoubser, apart from the fact that the OM352 fits like a hand in a glove in that engine compartment on the 416. Any re-engine job will need major modifications.

I agree with other comments, poor decision making for that driver. he seemed to have the all too often adopted mindset when you can afford a rig like that...."im in a mog and can do anything...wait a moment guys guys"......
Actually, this old Unimog costs far less than any of the Jeeps with on that day. As for the almost-tip-over... anybody can make a mistake and learn from it.
Hi Dawid, regards from Argentina. Unimog have a very important history here, because Mercedes Benz plant in San Martín (a suburb of Buenos Aires), was the first factory build by Mercedes abroad (in 1952), and after build a 4x4 version of the truck line (the LA-1112), the next year they start to build the UNIMOG, in 1968. The first version was the 416 (long wheel-base), and soon the 431 or 406 (short wheel-base), The first double-Cab 416 (only 61 vehicles built, excactly the same spec than the German model) came alive later. But over that basis was developed a new version with the cabin re-design, with larger rear doors (pretty much like your UNIMOG). Visualy the main difference with German version was that the side panels of the doors was flat. This cabs was built by a third-party Mercedes-benz related firm, a local company called "El Detalle", who was specialized in body works mainly for public transport. The first prototype of the new double-cab was built in 1978, and was built until 1983 (basically was used by Electric Energy service companies), I don´t know if these was exported, but yours is very similar to the DC built here. There is a very comprehensive book written by a UNIMOG enthusiast: articulo.mercadolibre.com.ar/MLA-789028168-libro-el-unimog-en-el-ejercito-argentino-2da-ed-direc-autor-_JM#position=3&type=item&tracking_id=98f64847-159f-4685-85d1-20914cea54a5. "Torque" is the Name of the Game here. Not H.P., Speed. V-8 Power, "Torque" is where its at❕
That's what I keep telling (teaching) my over-the-road truck drivers: it's torque that gets you up the grade, not speed ;-)
these car is an inline 6 most are inline 4, you american.
Actually in the case of a Mog, its torque AND gearing. And wheel size. And diff clearance. And huge wheel traverse. An offroad god of a truck.

soo funny watching jeeps... try... back up... try again... back up again... like 10 times. then the mog comes and eats it up in one shot

portal axles with locked diffs make all the difference
patrick660 you forgot suspension articulation and chassis flex and crawler gears . The newer ones has central tire inflation .
they go hand in hand typically

I just realised, we all need these, because in Cape Town, the roads are deteriorating so much. Seriously thgough, what a fab vehicle.
Great Video, Thanks for posting it, You Gotta Love how the Unimog just eats up the Bush.
I have a Land Rover Wolf ( military) and it would do anything your Unimog can do.. As long as your Unimog is parked > Ha
it can not
You missed the point. What I meant is that my Land Rover cannot do what your Unimog can do.
