That's what Bandai is been doing with the Gundam kits; keep reprinting past sets, even the ones from more than 15 years ago. This strategy works quite well as there are plenty of people that are enjoying the old designs. I'd rather Lego only releasing a few sets each year and keeps the old ones alive; is their money down the drains when the good sets are been retired way too frequently.
Old Lego (before the 2004 crisis) would sacrifice profit for user experience: the fiber optic element was so expensive to produce, that each set was sold at a heavy loss. Things like this would be unimaginable for today's Lego, where money alone is all they care.
This is the only one of the 90's flagship sets I never got and I'm still looking for a good deal on one occasionally. The fiber optics and micro motor intrigued me as a kid. Now I just want it for the nostalgia.
This is the set that got me into buying Lego’s. Bought it when it came out in 1996. I was 42 then. You flip the instruction book over for the ‘B’ model. I remember at least twice I started building the space shuttle and realize part way through the build, I had the book flipped over and was building the submarine. I still have vhs tapes of some shuttle missions I recorded from NASA tv when I had one of those big satellite dishes.
I got this set as my 9th birthday present in 1996. A week ago, when I was visiting my parents from accross the globe, they got my box of Legos down from the attic. So I started fishing for all the pieces accross tens of different sets I built back in the day. Lots of pieces went missing but it is my now mission to build it back, just like I did 28 years ago.
I have one, it's second handed. You forgot the fact that the crane is sticking out, and the knob on the satellite that allows manual control when the micro-motor is stuck. Also the battery is easy to change.
I wonder if this was one of the sets that cost more to manufacture than they made from selling it. Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen was the last CEO that was directly descended from the LEGO Founder, he was and still is abundantly passionate about LEGO but didn’t have an eye for finance. When LEGO almost went bankrupt in the early 2000s Jørgen Vig Knudstorp took over as CEO and whilst restructuring discovered several Technic sets containing fibre optics cost so much to manufacture that they lost money on every set sold. Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen is still ultimately responsible for the direction of the company and as the principle family owner has final say, but JVK and subsequent non-family CEOs steered the company back to profitability. If you watch the Netflix doco about the building of Lego House, you realise what an overgrown kid Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen is and how his enthusiasm permeates through the whole company.
This set is incredibly cool! It contains tons of rare and unique pieces with lots of (motorized) functions. In my opinion, we should get more LEGO Technic sets like this in the future, which I'm sure will be greatly appreciated by many Technic fans. There won't be any problems such as a hard-to-follow building process or a multi-step process to turn the battery box on in modern Technic sets. And, there haven't been many space shuttles in Lego Technic so one would be greatly appreciated :) I also appreciate the joke of "no pressure" showing a short video of pneumatics (which use air pressure) :)
This made the Christmas of 1999 the best gift for an 11-year-old. I am missing most of the rarest parts, but the manual is still around. Sometimes I wonder if it's worth looking for the missing parts to remake this.
Got this when I was 11 years old, still remember the day! My first real, big, advanced technic set and I was beyond thrilled! Recently found the old box in my parents house, and started looking everywhere for parts. Managed to rebuild the whole set to it's original shape and form during a couple of weeks time - with only a few exceptions of odd colored bricks and pieces I had to buy on ebay. Now the biggest challenge so far is that the one holy grail piece I'm missing is the micromotor... happens to also be the hardest one to find! Today I'm 36, and it's still a thrill to see this set! It's truly fantastic and worth the wait for that last missing piece!
Top set ever, I bought a new one ten years ago for about 300€. I built it and than disassembled carefully. White pieces of that era tended to become yellow at the sunlight. (Be patient for my english).
I was lucky do get one last year for a little over 200$ with intruction, box, working electronics and all the parts. Half stickers were missing. Now I realize how lucky I was! Its a great set, a gem in my collection.
I don't have this set in my collection (yet) but having most flagship sets of that period and prior to it, I would not call the instructions "bad". Generally, 80s and 90s Technic instructions have complicated mechanisms realized with fewer parts while using more parts per step than nowadays. I have sets that I believe would generally annoy an average teenager, like 8851 and 8082. That said, it's a great review! Do more of these precious vintage Technic sets!
whatever you do just like every other technic lego set, and especially of this era, don`t mess it up while building it, i did with mine, and because i took so much time and trouble to build it in the first place, i really didn`t have the heart to build it more or less all over again, so to this day, it never did get completed.
I really love the functionality and playability of this set Even though it's appearance looks quite simple It would be good if there's a b-model review video
Great review! I remember buying this set from Lego S@H the day it was first available. You correctly mentioned that the old wires' rubber insulation basically now crumbles when you bend it. BUT there was a second type of 9V wire that had a more plasticky insulation and that wire still is perfect even now. Depending on what wire you bought on Bricklink it may crumble as soon as you bend it or it may be the more plastic wire. If you get the bad kind let me know and I'll send you some of the better stuff.
Sets like this one prove that it was probably not such a good idea after all for LEGO to completely abandon studded Technic. I mean they still make the pieces and use them heavily in System sets, but there are no full-on Technic sets with studded construction anymore, and it's a shame. Hybrid sets are probably my favorites, although some fully studded ones are fantastic as well
Hey you should make a Lego Vacuum engine and a video about it I posted one on my channel Also kfplus Lego mastery makes really good videos about these engines These engines work with a Vacuum cleaner
Greetings from greece. I love your content so continue like that. I also wondered if you are going to build the B model of the legendary 8480 since that would be an amazing video
Congrats with 10k subscribers. Really cool set review. I would appreciate more reviews of older technic sets. But I guess this set was quite expensive to get your hands on?
I bought it on Bricklink! It was $450 sealed but with shipping and such it was a little more than $500! Also I’m a huge fan of your channel! Thank you very much for commenting!
I was 8 when this came out. I watched my older brother build it. I really liked the fiber optics in the back. This gives me so much nostalgia. Omg
I hope your brother watched this video!
Wonder where ur brothers set is now.
I personally think LEGO should release a throwback set every year. That could keep the old look but with modern instructions.
Same
yeah that would be epic!

Just grabbed one on FB Marketplace this morning for $60!! Covered im dust but all electrics present & functional. Battery box has ZERO corrosion

yeah, a working micro motor costs about 40$. Seems like a lot of it just stopped working, like mine :/
One of my all-time favorite Technics sets I have. I could play with its motorized gearbox all day without getting bored with it.
same here!
1998, 13 year old. I remember that I built this. I had no idea this was such a legendary set ... Haven't been into lego since recently.
Are there any sets that have caught your attention recently?
I still have this set that i got for christmas 1996 :>
