Chawton House Hampshire - Home of Jane Austen's Brother - History and Tour
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 30 май 2024
- Chawton House was the home of Jane Austen's brother, Edward Austen Knight. It's a fascinating story of how this property has stayed in the Knight family for over 400 years, and how it has such close ties to Jane Austen who visited this property regularly when Edward was in residence. Chawton House is located in the already famous village of Chawton, as it's where Jane Austen lived in her later life, in a home provided by Edward on the estate.
Learn about the Knight family, tour the house and gardens with us, and see where Jane Austen would have walked and found inspiration for her novels. It's also here in the peaceful church that her mother and sister both called Cassandra are laid to rest.

Jane Austen - a little lady who is in all British hearts - she captured her day, their ways, their feelings & their stories. Some of us have always wanted to be back there with them enjoying the civil ways they cultivated, and hope we do not lose entirely ! Life has become so course in many ways, and we could do ourselves a lot of good in learning from Jane's era. It does not help us to progress to better things unless we first learn to practice decency. Love you Jane & thank you for all you gave us !
This place is just gorgeous.❣️I sometimes envy your extensive history you have there. It’s hard to believe that people live in these old places. I’m glad he gave a home to his sisters & mother since staying somewhere, permanently , is paramount. I love how you keep history alive & share it with everyone to enjoy, beautiful church, also✨
We agree!
Thank you for this video recognizing Edward Knight. My step grandmother Aileen Knight was his descendant.
You are welcome it has been very interesting learning about the family for myself! What a great connection to have with the Knight family.
Jane Austen wrote very good novels so sad her talent ended at such a young age.
Yes indeed very sad.

An amazing tour of a beautiful historic home and property. I very much enjoyed a look into yet another facet of Jane Austen’s life after seeing the tour of her home. I am glad it is preserved and available for public enjoyment. Thank you for taking some of us to places we cannot go….it is, indeed, a treat!
Hello Shawn, thanks for your comment, glad that you enjoyed it. Hopefully you have seen the other 2 videos we did on Jane as well.
Yes
Nice house of Jane Austen s brother's house. Very historical and beautiful 😃
Yes we liked it lovely that you can visit both Jane’s and his house in the same day. Just 1/2mile apart.
They knew how to build things that were classical in them days. And that we can truly treasure to this day. A great story teller with some wonderful stories to tell.
My daughter works there, helping with events and using her art college skills making display exhibits for shows and events.
I have read the book , " Pride and prejudice " , way back in 1973 in High school but those days we didn't have TV or RUclips to see such videos. Thanks to you for sharing this video about my favorite author. One day I'll come by to see this remarkable cottage. Kumbhoj village Jai Maharashtra.
Thanks for your comment - you’re always welcome to come and visit! There is no match for seeing something with your own eyes!
❤️ to India
This was so lovely to watch, I was born and grew up in Hampshire and this house brings back some lovely memories I’m so glad you covered it.
Our pleasure!
You guys are so professional, the photography, camera control. An excellent use of background music and very importantly, a listenable voice. Congratulations and thank you.
Thank you very much, that is so kind and nice to hear on this dreary Sunday morning in London. 👍
Lovely video of Chawton House. Learnt a lot Thnx
Thank you so much for this most interesting and educational video! I learned a lot about Jane Austen and her family today! I also love the English countryside, beautiful just beautiful! Very much my favorite place. Mind you I am half English, as my father was born, and grew up in Greenwich in London before he emigrated to New Zealand in 1947.
So ein Rundgang ist für mich wie ein kleiner Urlaub. Vielen Dank. LG.Heidi .
Oh, it's so good to see a place I thought I'd be this year, but unfortunately couldn't! Thank you so much. Your video is precious for us who love Jane Austen! Even more for someone who loves England's history. Regards from Brazil.
Thanks so much for your kind comment, we’re glad you enjoyed the video. Did you see we have 2 other videos about Jane Austen? One about her life and the other about her Hampshire home.
It’s a shame you weren’t able to make it to the U.K. this year, but we’re ready to welcome you when the situation allows. Obrigado!
@@MemorySeekers yes, yes, I saw them! Jane Austen's House museum was a local I visited on 2017 and I absolutely loved it! It's a pity I couldn't go to others places nearby in that occasion, but it is in my agenda when Covid lets us live again. Meanwhile, I'll use your videos to make me feel more close to my wishes. So, thank you for an interesting and beautiful videos. God bless you.
Fascinating, I’ve learnt more about Jane Austen’s family than other documentaries 👍 Thank you!
Thank you so much, delighted that you think so.
This was interesting. If you want additional info see, Who Was The Real Jane Austen : Behind Closed Doors. Lucy Worsley's work is a tour de force.
Thanks so much for your kindness and generosity for producing these videos. Due to being in New Zealand, it's impossible to visit my home. Covid is the 21st century curse! Your wonderful videos do justice to your eloquent commentary and camera sensitivity. I am now an avid supporter.😃
Hello Becky, thank you for the lovely words. We are pleased you have enjoyed our videos and are supporting us! Best regards and take care in NZ
Have just watched your Jane Austen trilogy and thank you. I feel like I was there and really enjoyed the visit...
Hi Annie that is so nice to hear and what we want to achieve from our videos. 😃
What a fantastic house! Would love to visit one day.
Well New York is not that far so hope you do.
Such an enjoyable watch. Your pace and gentle narration makes for an accomplished video. As Hampshire is not too far away, I am determined to make a visit for myself. Thank you so much.
Well you really should, it's a great day out and you can walk between Jane's home and then up to Chawton House Edward's home very easily. Make sure you book both! Glad you liked it.
What a beautiful place.

It has been wonderful to learn about the author of my favorite "Sense & Sensibility"...thank you!
Hello Rita glad you have learnt something we learnt a lot researching it for the video. Fascinating stuff 😄
Stunningly beautiful house and gardens
Thanks for visiting
Great! And Jane is one of my favourite authors, a great novelist. Thanks for the video
Very Welcome!
I am delighted to have found your channel!
Welcome!
Fascinating video! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you! It does look a bit more commercialized them when I visited an 81. But I’m glad it is popular
The pirate flag intrigues me. I'm going to play the vlog again just in case you talked about it and I missed the comment. The house and history is really interesting. Thank you once again. =-) I looked it up - To celebrate the anarchic spirit of female pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read, who feature in the exhibition, Chawton House will fly the Jolly Roger from the parapets. This was the pirate flag favoured by infamous pirate Jack Rackham, under whose captaincy Bonny and Read sailed.
Ah brilliant thank you Lorraine, I never did find out myself why it was flown. Now we know! 😊
This is just fantastic! Sir, you are so amazing in your presentation, your voice, your camera work, that I subscribed immediately and plan to binge watch all of your videos! Love your Channel, and as a huge fan of Jane Austen's I'm loving all these videos. However, I noticed at about 7:34 into the video, Jack Rackham's pirate flag flying from the building! I didn't hear you mention anything about it but am very curious why that would be. 🖤🏴☠️
So pleased you are enjoying our content. From and also looking it up again it was to do with an exhibition on in the house. As it was not in context to Jane Austen and her brother I left it out and I have to say probably was not sure at the time! Here is what is said on their website. "To celebrate the anarchic spirit of female pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read, who feature in the exhibition, Chawton House will fly the Jolly Roger from the parapets. This was the pirate flag favoured by infamous pirate Jack Rackham, under whose captaincy Bonny and Read sailed." Whether it is still flown I do not know! ☺
@@MemorySeekers had a feeling it was about those wild female pirates (that sounds like it was a great exhibition)! And I figured it was not about the Austen/Knight family! Thank you for replying and giving all that good information!
I love it, even tough I dont have to bye
Hi, Thank you for the beautiful videos! I'm learning the English language, can I get your scripts?
