      I know this is an old video but hoping you might have some insight of the approximate kelvin of this filter? I'm looking at some promising amber options from Cokin of whom unlike Tiffen actually quote the Kelvin their filters are cutting down too (from 5500K). I take it from the images that the chocolate 1 isn't as strong as say a 85b filter but if anyone has a good guesstimate that would be great!

    The Ektar has less saturation in the yellow-red to full red-tones but really boosted in the blue-green, and normal in straight yellow. People overcompensate when editing and developing ektar to push the reds thats why its usually not considered a great portrait stock as it makes white/fair skinned people quite red. Makes them look like they're sun burnt. But if developed correctly, as in the shots here. The chocolate filter doesn't add much to reduce the blue because of the saturation is higher than what the chocolate filter can remove from it. The example of the blue shadows in the Portra stock shows how much this is removed. So add that minimal difference to a stock that has a lot more saturation and not much would change.

    • @brycepinson8641
      @brycepinson8641 2 года назад +1

      It's unreal how many people don't understand this about Ektar. Probably because they don't read/understand the data sheet and have never done a proper manual color inversion of Ektar to see its normal color rendition.... Thats also why the ektar shots leaned towards blue when he pushed it to 400- because ektar builds blue density first and red density last... anyway I'm just here to agree with your comment because many do not understand ektar.

    • @aceflibble
      @aceflibble 2 года назад +1

      @@dimitrijekrstic7567 Lightroom can't do what a physical colour filter does; Lightroom can shift colours one side or another, but it can't merge colours and it can't increase contrast only in specific colour/saturation groups, which is what actually happens when you use a physical filter to block particular wavelengths out. You can replicate it with Photoshop or other more advanced processors, but it's a multi-step process and you're having to do that for each image one-by-one. Not to mention it defeats the purposes for many people who shoot film and specifically do not want to be sat in software all day. It is far, far quicker and easier to simply use a physical filter, and you get a more consistent and nuanced result.
      And I say that as someone who's been using Photoshop for 25 years and Lightroom since literally the first day it was released.

    Two things:
    - With a 58mm filter thread of the Makina (and most lenses up to 62mm), far cheaper alternative brown or warming filters are available.
    Including Cokins much cheaper A series, with plentiful vintage resin filters. Including a wonderful graduated brown, that makes all your photos look like Top Gun.
    - Provia is better than Ektachrome on most counts. And cheaper.
    Better reciprocity. Neutral, but still strong colours. And high sharpness.

    • @aceflibble
      @aceflibble 2 года назад

      There are cheaper versions of all of Tiffen's filters, but few cheap filters, especially colour filters, are available in the weaker strengths like Tiffen's, which is where they're most effective.

    Turn off Auto Color in NLP and use the RGB/CMY midtone sliders to correct your colors. They actually effect the whole image except the white highlights and black shadows. Just like a lab scanner or an enlarger. This should preserve more of the filters effect.
    Also you can shoot 800T in daylight fine without a filter. Just rate it at 500 ASA and correct it with the WB slider or the yellow/blue midtone slider. And 5219 is recommended to be shot with an 85 not an 85B filter. If you don't meter through the lens you need to rate it at 320 for that. Essentially that 5219 is an 800 ASA film because of C41 processing is a lie. It's still 500 ASA.
