    TO remove the tint from the rear window, here's what I did with one of my cars with a rear defroster: I bought a cheap steam machine (in the same section as the clothes irons) and some plastic scrapers from Walmart. I also laid some shop towels at the base of the rear glass and the package tray and started heating the tint up with steam. Once the tint started bubbling up, it came off in sizeable chunks as I scraped the glass gently. This process did take some time and it was messy to deal with, but the results are worth it!

      Jepp, thats where I would have gone with my comment aswell. Steam or even pure boiling water puring over it helps losing in up. Although I can't tell wether your defrost stays on. Here is a link: ruclips.net/video/IY3WaUny3W0/видео.html

      I was going to suggest this as the best method, makes the tints softer and more pliable. Even the steam will rehydrate the next bit to come off. But that you've done this and proven it's an effective method is excellent!

    • @zenithperigee7442
      @zenithperigee7442 Год назад

      @Lincoln, that is an excellent idea! Mike mentioned "scary" and I honesty find it scary with some of these Mercedes, the numbers & types of diagnostic codes that are sometimes found when connecting such tools. It would be nice to see what is available for them because no doubt there are a lot of cheap knock-offs that just won't work. It's unbelievable just how many "scanners" there are on the market and how many of them don't do much more than the other but they're varying prices and I wonder how many of them will actually work with these cars because they're a bit more complex than average domestic cars.
      I know it's likely not a priority but I'd also like to see Mike polish the headlights if he isn't replacing them. When I saw them I wanted to polish them for him, lol. And then there is the paint which could use some polishing. I'm interested to see what he will do with the car before he parts with it. I'm glad that he's happy with the gift of it.

    For the tint, high pressure steamer. Heat up the whole glass first, then focus on the area you want to start. A small cut will help you get your fingers on a loose piece. Steam at the locations you're pulling off. Be gentle. It will come right off, somewhat slowly.
    If you're careful, most of the glue will come with it - be careful pausing as that will tend to leave a glue line. Isopropyl alcohol (maybe ammonia) and plastic scrapers will remove the leftover glue, if any.
    Done 2 cars this way in the last year, one of them with >10yo tint. I used the Bissell 39N7H after trying a generic Amazon piece of crap that failed immediately.

    Use heat lamps or a heat gun on the outside of the glass, stretching the tint slightly as parallel to the glass as you can to help keep the adhesive on the tint. Clean the leftover glue with Sprayway glass cleaner using 00 steel wool or preferably white Scotch Brite pads so you don't damage the defogger grid. I used to be a 3M tint dealer in Garden City area for 7 years and have found this to be the safest way to get the old tint off and prep the glass for new tint.

      @@Rokkator there is a metallic resistive paint specifically for defogger grid repair. ConductiveX comes to mind. I just get the paint and mask off the grid above and below the line, put on 2 coats, and it works up to 2 1/2 inches long. I also cut the paint at the tape line with an Olfa stainless blade. To remove the adhesive residue, spray WD-40 on a paper shop towel and use that to remove the adhesive, testing first to make sure it doesn't remove the heater grid adhesive. Then you can use glass cleaner or alcohol to remove the WD-40 residue.

    I'd definitely suggest trying a steamer. It may be a pita with the small confines, but it should help heat up the glue and loosen it. I used this method with a regular clothing steamer to remove PPF that was cracked and discolored on my 911 when I got it. It took some time and patience but worked great. I found another video where someone explains how to do it for the exact purpose you are looking to do, to protect the defroster lines:
    ruclips.net/video/xhBEEC5seEA/видео.html
    As someone else mentioned, it may be worth taking it somewhere to retint and just have them remove the old tint (they may just remove without new tint, I have never asked a tint shop). Good luck with it either way.

I often drove on roads [literally "where the buffalo roam" ] that were slippery slick clay/dirt and rock. It would straighten itself out "like it was on rails".Only problem I had was a brass/ceramic fuse that had a little corrosion on it and wouldn't power the door lock/cylinder - key to disengage security system. 5 minute RUclips video. Great to see you with your own channel. Your insight on many cars is wonderful to have. I'm dealing with the same tint-removal process on my 1981 Porsche 928. I'm finding a hair dryer helps quite a bit but with the defrost bars on the back window, it's still a pain-staking process. Go slow, be patient!

    enjoy all the cars, experience them, produce the content on them, and then sell all of them and start again. I'm thankful I found your channel. This is just my opinion, but I have a lot of experience in this.

    Nice to see more content up here. You're a natural, I'm pretty sure people would watch cement dry with Magic Mike the Cement Guy if that was a thing.
