That is with most of his guest, Joe Rogan has a way to just ask the right questions and we can all listen and learn something about the guest. I love his podcast.
What I love about Joe Rogan vs every other interviewer is Joe actually lets the guests speak. He doesn’t try and interrupt or talk over them. And Waters is a very interesting person to get to know. Very intriguing.
Great point. Another great aspect is that Joes questions and the manner in which he asks them is so thought provoking. He really sets the guest at ease and brings out these great stories and experience.
You must not have watched a lot of Rogan then. I used to be a big fan. Not anymore. Mainly because of this exact reason. He only lets certain guest talk uninterrupted. If he thinks he “knows” anything about the subject at hand, he doesn’t shut up. I can’t count how many times he’s derailed a guest halfway into their story just to watch some dumbass video that has literally ZERO to do with the convo at hand.
Roger’s mom reminds me of my dad. He tried to teach us to read every side of the story and understand all sides of the issue before making any conclusions. It’s called critical thinking. Which nowadays is nonexistent in most people. And also respecting other people even when they are different. Just being a good person. My dad was also happily atheist.
@gingerslides a true critical thinker questions everything, including what suits their already established opinions. Also, a critical thinker is always open to change their mind, if is presented with strong arguments.
Glad you had that upbringing and developed critical thinking skills and understand that trying to be respectful is ultimately important as much as possible, because where we disagree doesn't mean we have to hate our neighbour, especially since in this current system 99.9% of us are in the same class and have the same basic needs. Together, we can create a better world. But we cannot do that alone and divided. I've been inspired recently by "One Small Town" initiative by Michael Tellinger. A way to start local, with willing participants, those who are at least on the same wavelength as the others to understanding the reason to create a better alternative system, and will get benefits of community, health and abundance over time the more that volunteer to join.
This is a huge difference between the generations. Roger's mom was a single parent who believed in the importance of educating her children so they could develop their minds and become useful in society
Roger also grew up in a country with a giant social safety net, universal Healthcare and good wages, although still not a meritocracy, a great departure from the crony capitalism we experience in the US

His stories about his childhood and mother are extremely endearing. When I was growing up, my parents refused to tell "us kids" who they voted for in elections because they wanted us to grow up and make our own decisions without their influence. It meant something.
If they vote based on the values you imparted in them, they'll eventually vote the same, or not vote at all. Ive never voted. My parents continue to vote, but I have a large distrust for the absolute corruption that abounds in the political class. I dont see them as my leaders. Where would they be leading me? Responsibility lies with the individual, and just like an atheist can latch onto ethical and moral actions of those of faith, without the core beliefs, it is that much more possible to be responsible for ones life, rather than to delegate that to some far removed class of politicians.
After 4 years, was it not obvious who they voted for? Serious question bc it would seem that over the course of the term, your parents reactions to what is going on would make it obvious who they voted for. Mine never told me, but boy I sure knew! lol
First time making a comment on a video...I could listen to Joe and Roger for hours. Chills listening...WOW! Thank you Joe for providing the platform and thank you Roger Waters for being an open-book...you are imo one of the greatest people of our time. I have 3 kids who at a very young age were exposed to your music. As they grew in age, I began to share with them my feelings on your lyrics...the deeper meaning beyond the "music/song." As they are now young adults, we reference specific lines from your poetry as we deal with life's challenges. My youngest has even taken one specific line to heart (ten years have got behind us, no one told us when to run, you missed the starting gun) - graduating high school and immediately "getting on with life" by traveling and exploring the country. She continues to have not a worry in the world of conforming to "the machine" and money and material items. She's one of the happiest young adults and I truly believe it's (in part) the impact your lyric(s) had on her at an early stage in her life. To that I say thank you!
Mate, I think anyone who's got pink floyd feels so similar. Some of the music lyrics are life altering and 100% changed the course of my life. DSOTM changed the perspective of my safe and Animals changed my perception of society. And remember, there is no dark side of the moon... its all dark

Funny how all the good advice my father gave me kicked in into my mind after he was gone. At the time advice was given i did not take it seriously but now when i am older it is all coming back to me. Respect your parents people.
My dad died 42 years ago. If I could just say one thing to him , it would be, "You were a wise man, Dad & I wish that I had been a better son...well, that's two things, but you get my drift. 😉
What I got from my father was how to live, not his 'advice'. Much of his advice was not helpful, some hurtful. But what I learned about child psychology is that children don't listen to what their parents say, they pay VERY close attention to what they do. I know of all the sacrifices, the humility, the shit and all that got thrown at him to do the best for his family. This is why they say beaten children still grow up like their parents, its all they know. Fortunately I had none of that, although he was fairly strict, but I remember my sister saying "you know, dad doesn't say 'I love you', but he shows it with what he does". And I thought "no duh". Maybe its a guy thing, but I understood that early on. However, I've been in the world enough to know really shitty parents, namely people who NEVER should have been parents, and no, I wouldn't say they deserve a childs respect. They may deserve some pity because they are fractured people, but thats soemthing else.
There is a concept called Bowen Family Systems that says if you get too enmeshed physically and emotionally with your parents youll never develop a genuine sense of self, you will always be the lil kid w codependent problems. Thats why dudes who are over 30 living w parents are afraid losers. Love your parents if they are your friends and love you. If they are losers, haters, physically abusers, unhealthy dudes like my father then f them. I went no contact w mine after becoming independent and it has been a relief.

Saw him my first and probably only time last weekend in Vegas. He puts on a show that is second to none. His set is tight, and professional. The performance is better than most current musicians could ever hope to create. Consider he is 79 years old, and he put on two separate sets with maybe a 15 minute intermission. He was amazing. People give him shit for being political…Consider his dad and grandfather were killed in war. People give him shit for being kind of grouchy and disrespectful of his band mates. I’m just glad they made the albums they did. I wish him and David would have been able to coexist longer.

Rogan has it all. He can sit and get stoned and have a laugh and pull the piss with some guests and then effortlessly have Roger Waters open up like this. There isn't one talk show in the world with this type of dialogue, honesty and an interviewer listening and not interrupting to get a laugh.

I know exactly what he means about the adolescent dread of death. Happened to me when I was 12. One night it got so bad I went to my parents room while they were sleeping and my mom told me “you’re still so young, you have a whole life ahead of you, don’t worry.” Funny this brought up a core memory. I’m 21 now and am so grateful for my youth, sometimes being 60 sounds surreal. Really put age into perspective. Life’s beautiful

The studying all sides part; there's a serious lack of that going on right now. It doesn't help that platforms like Twitter censor "wrong thinkers" in the name of "safety".
Worse than that, the way that all major algorithms are set up, the AI actively prevents you from seeing things you disagree with, or it prioritizes the things that you disagree with but are strawmen from the other side that people you follow are attacking. It is actually harder than ever to get the picture from both sides. I tried to do it during covid, but it was so hard that I would spend hours everyday parsing through information, no one has time for that. Eventually I made up my mind on certain things and gave up. Same with diet/nutrition. I spent 100s of hours, maybe even 1000 hours just trying to understand how I should eat. I never got the answer, I just heard thousands of mutually exclusive arguments, in the end I went with something in the middle, but in general it was a very tiresome, unrewarding process.

I live up near Bradford and have been doing a good bit of research about PF in the North (Huddersfield, Keighley, Krumlin (near Halifax), Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield and Stockport). Bradford is really really interesting from a PF perspective, because it was also the first place they played a concert after the principle shooting of the Pompeii film in October 1971. Bradford University Student's Union had never experienced ticket forgeries up until that "gig". Roger's incredible Mum, had a teaching placement at the local Grammar School (when it was situated on another site, as opposed to where it stands today). The more Roger talks about her, the more you like him, and love and respect his Mum, what a truly amazing and informed lady she was.
A real man of courage who can talk with empathy in his heart for people in need of social justice. This man can stand tall and more, so-called men, could surely learn from someone who has the guts to do the right thing in this world. Sometimes its easier to focus on saving the world, than it is one's own interpersonal relationships. I'm a huge fan of Roger and his former Pink Floyd bandmates, but he is no Saint, fallable like the rest of us.

It's hard to understand his opinion unless you have intimate knowledge of ukraine and Russian history, as well as the violations of international law that Nato did. It's great when older people can tell you stories from their life from a fairly objective standpoint. Roger is a bit like Paul McCartney in that way, like it really feels like a privilege to hear them talk about how things went down with their band or what life was like when they were growing up.
lyrics are a huge part of music. from bob dylan, john lennon to roger waters. they use words to convey THOUGHTS. simple messages of PEACE. and often that comes with criticism of oppression and injustice. roger excels at it.

What an absolute privilege it is to be able to interview this man. You can see that Joe looks honored for the opportunity to be able to do it and you can see his utmost respect and admiration in his expression and manner towards Roger. It's a great thing to see. I remember when the pretentious (at the time) music media used to look down on Pink Floyd as they weren`t "hip" enough and Rogers lyrics were criticised for being juvenile. I still think that "Time" is one of the most profoundly written songs of all time and now I wonder if it was inspired somehow by Rogers fear of death when he was young. Great story about his Mum ........ shame he and David couldn`t find a way to bury the hatchet and work together again.
Thank you Joe and Roger for sharing the wisdom in this video. Simple rule to live by my mother taught me: Do the right thing not to escape punishment or to receive reward but simply because it's the right thing to do.
The "right thing" is an entirely subjective matter. Understanding that is fundamental to detailed analytical thought. With respect intended, your understanding is very basic. Some people think the "right thing to do" involves things that other people think are horrible things to do. A lot of people you and I would consider to be quite evil thought they were doing the right thing. You don't have to go back many hundreds of years to find populations of people who thought that sexual contact with children was perfectly okay. In fact, this world contains many countries in 2022 where certain people still hold those views. I think they are wrong and I am sure you do to, but they are quite sure they are right. Waters is a bigot.
When I was 21, I was obsessed with Pink Floyd, I learned all their songs, almost started a Floyd tribute band, had the posters, and I worshipped Roger Waters, I thought he was a musical god.I'm 63 now, and I'm so happy he's still doing interviews, because back then, zero interviews, few photos, it was so hard to get stuff, now he's everywhere. What great advice his mother gave him. I also had that daunting moment in my life when I was about 10 and I realised I was going to die, it hit me hard and I had a few nights where I couldn't sleep and my mum was also there for me. Although she may have not been as wise as this mans, a mothers love is a strong thing that can help grow good men. I love the advice she gave him about looking at issues from both sides and studying topics to the nth degree, then to finalize it by concluding that the answer always is easy, you just do the right thing. I'll be passing these words onto my daughter. Fair play old chap 👍🏻.
I can relate to some of Rogers stories… dealing with a Vietnam vet for a father and living a undiscovered path to life, I think acceptance is all good until those want to impede your path and acceptance based on your values. This is where we are as a society - polar opposites cannot accept a level of do good anymore.

"Tear down the wall!" is the rallying cry we should all strive for. The ego is that wall.

Roger may be a domineering personality that has peeved off plenty of people along the way, but the man is a brilliant mind, a great storyteller, and when you really get down to it...a good person.
Did you listen to the whole show? Roger talked at length about the youth chorus in Oakland when he played a concert there and it was so powerful I teared up. Wonder if that’s the same show you saw?

In one sense Syd by 'dropping-out' was a sublime escape, of what Max Weber (social theorist) termed 'the iron cage of modernity' that would have as a celebrity entailed he commit to a career in advocacy and competition within the band. But rather Syd had a life of an introspective kind, albeit troubled, situated near Cambridge.
Absolute legend, one of my favourite podcasts. Pink Floyd are one of my all time favourite bands and mostly due to the writing abilities and genius of this man.

His stories about his childhood and mother are extremely endearing. When I was growing up, my parents refused to tell "us kids" who they voted for in elections because they wanted us to grow up and make our own decisions without their influence. It meant something.
If they vote based on the values you imparted in them, they'll eventually vote the same, or not vote at all.
Ive never voted. My parents continue to vote, but I have a large distrust for the absolute corruption that abounds in the political class. I dont see them as my leaders. Where would they be leading me? Responsibility lies with the individual, and just like an atheist can latch onto ethical and moral actions of those of faith, without the core beliefs, it is that much more possible to be responsible for ones life, rather than to delegate that to some far removed class of politicians.

Thank you Joe for providing the platform and thank you Roger Waters for being an open-book...you are imo one of the greatest people of our time. I have 3 kids who at a very young age were exposed to your music. As they grew in age, I began to share with them my feelings on your lyrics...the deeper meaning beyond the "music/song." As they are now young adults, we reference specific lines from your poetry as we deal with life's challenges. My youngest has even taken one specific line to heart (ten years have got behind us, no one told us when to run, you missed the starting gun) - graduating high school and immediately "getting on with life" by traveling and exploring the country. She continues to have not a worry in the world of conforming to "the machine" and money and material items. She's one of the happiest young adults and I truly believe it's (in part) the impact your lyric(s) had on her at an early stage in her life. To that I say thank you!

Funny how all the good advice my father gave me kicked in into my mind after he was gone. At the time advice was given i did not take it seriously but now when i am older it is all coming back to me. Respect your parents people.
I think that's a lot of us. A lot of us were just young and foolish.
My dad died 42 years ago. If I could just say one thing to him , it would be, "You were a wise man, Dad & I wish that I had been a better son...well, that's two things, but you get my drift. 😉
What I got from my father was how to live, not his 'advice'. Much of his advice was not helpful, some hurtful. But what I learned about child psychology is that children don't listen to what their parents say, they pay VERY close attention to what they do. I know of all the sacrifices, the humility, the shit and all that got thrown at him to do the best for his family. This is why they say beaten children still grow up like their parents, its all they know. Fortunately I had none of that, although he was fairly strict, but I remember my sister saying "you know, dad doesn't say 'I love you', but he shows it with what he does". And I thought "no duh". Maybe its a guy thing, but I understood that early on. However, I've been in the world enough to know really shitty parents, namely people who NEVER should have been parents, and no, I wouldn't say they deserve a childs respect. They may deserve some pity because they are fractured people, but thats soemthing else.
There is a concept called Bowen Family Systems that says if you get too enmeshed physically and emotionally with your parents youll never develop a genuine sense of self, you will always be the lil kid w codependent problems. Thats why dudes who are over 30 living w parents are afraid losers. Love your parents if they are your friends and love you. If they are losers, haters, physically abusers, unhealthy dudes like my father then f them. I went no contact w mine after becoming independent and it has been a relief.

Worse than that, the way that all major algorithms are set up, the AI actively prevents you from seeing things you disagree with, or it prioritizes the things that you disagree with but are strawmen from the other side that people you follow are attacking. It is actually harder than ever to get the picture from both sides. I tried to do it during covid, but it was so hard that I would spend hours everyday parsing through information, no one has time for that. Eventually I made up my mind on certain things and gave up. Same with diet/nutrition. I spent 100s of hours, maybe even 1000 hours just trying to understand how I should eat. I never got the answer, I just heard thousands of mutually exclusive arguments, in the end I went with something in the middle, but in general it was a very tiresome, unrewarding process.

I live up near Bradford and have been doing a good bit of research about PF in the North (Huddersfield, Keighley, Krumlin (near Halifax), Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield and Stockport). Bradford is really really interesting from a PF perspective, because it was also the first place they played a concert after the principle shooting of the Pompeii film in October 1971. Bradford University Student's Union had never experienced ticket forgeries up until that "gig". Roger's incredible Mum, had a teaching placement at the local Grammar School (when it was situated on another site, as opposed to where it stands today). The more Roger talks about her, the more you like him, and love and respect his Mum, what a truly amazing and informed lady she was.

The man believes that left-wing policies help the weak when in fact all they do is burden them! He doesn't even understand the Pareto Principle and talks about "inequalities", a principle whose great example is...himself!

I remember when the pretentious (at the time) music media used to look down on Pink Floyd as they weren`t "hip" enough and Rogers lyrics were criticised for being juvenile. I still think that "Time" is one of the most profoundly written songs of all time and now I wonder if it was inspired somehow by Rogers fear of death when he was young.
Great story about his Mum ........ shame he and David couldn`t find a way to bury the hatchet and work together again.

Thank you Joe and Roger for sharing the wisdom in this video. Simple rule to live by my mother taught me: Do the right thing not to escape punishment or to receive reward but simply because it's the right thing to do.
That presupposes one has learned the difference bet right and wrong.

The "right thing" is an entirely subjective matter. Understanding that is fundamental to detailed analytical thought. With respect intended, your understanding is very basic. Some people think the "right thing to do" involves things that other people think are horrible things to do. A lot of people you and I would consider to be quite evil thought they were doing the right thing. You don't have to go back many hundreds of years to find populations of people who thought that sexual contact with children was perfectly okay. In fact, this world contains many countries in 2022 where certain people still hold those views. I think they are wrong and I am sure you do to, but they are quite sure they are right. Waters is a bigot.

When I was 21, I was obsessed with Pink Floyd, I learned all their songs, almost started a Floyd tribute band, had the posters, and I worshipped Roger Waters, I thought he was a musical god.I'm 63 now, and I'm so happy he's still doing interviews, because back then, zero interviews, few photos, it was so hard to get stuff, now he's everywhere. The mystery made it better back then… when you had to buy a magazine to see what a band looked liked
He's still conveying Pink Floyd lyrics, even as he speaks. They were of great impact on me then and still are today.

She doesn't sound like the emotionally abusive mother from The Wall who I always assumed was based on Roger's mother.
What great advice his mother gave him. I also had that daunting moment in my life when I was about 10 and I realised I was going to die, it hit me hard and I had a few nights where I couldn't sleep and my mum was also there for me. Although she may have not been as wise as this mans, a mothers love is a strong thing that can help grow good men.
I love the advice she gave him about looking at issues from both sides and studying topics to the nth degree, then to finalize it by concluding that the answer always is easy, you just do the right thing. I'll be passing these words onto my daughter.

I can certainly relate to Rogers, teen worries and the thought of death. A very real experience and very frightening at the time.

I can relate to some of Rogers stories… dealing with a Vietnam vet for a father and living a undiscovered path to life, I think acceptance is all good until those want to impede your path and acceptance based on your values. This is where we are as a society - polar opposites cannot accept a level of do good anymore.

The Wall was so revolutionary to me because it showed so clearly -- via music -- how we divide and separate each other and become so deeply alienated, and in turn we think we are so much stronger for doing so!... but we're not; this only breeds addiction and even delusional meglomania. "Tear down the wall!" is the rallying cry we should all strive for. The ego is that wall.
Imagine this multimillionaire success story since the 70s is spending his time as an activist for the world. Exposing the atrocities of corporatism and unjust regimes like apartheid Israel. What a great gift we all have in Mr. Waters. Thank you Roger.

Roger may be a domineering personality that has peeved off plenty of people along the way, but the man is a brilliant mind, a great storyteller, and when you really get down to it...a good person.
I saw him in Oakland in 2015. One of the very best damn concerts I've ever seen. Truly honored to have witnessed it
Did you listen to the whole show? Roger talked at length about the youth chorus in Oakland when he played a concert there and it was so powerful I teared up. Wonder if that’s the same show you saw?

His parents lived in a different era. The shock his mother must have got in going from North London to Bradford in Yorkshire would have been stark. Thanks for the upload - i never knew a whole load about Roger Waters.
In one sense Syd by 'dropping-out' was a sublime escape, of what Max Weber (social theorist) termed 'the iron cage of modernity' that would have as a celebrity entailed he commit to a career in advocacy and competition within the band. But rather Syd had a life of an introspective kind, albeit troubled, situated near Cambridge.
From what I've read he wasn't very happy, though.
