Say what you will about Water's and his ego, but he definitely gets a bit choked up when talking about Syd Barrett. I have seen several interviews with Water's talking about Syd and he seems to get emotional when discussing his love for Syd.
You can tell they were good friends. And true showman, it's hard to leave the one that helped get you where you're going. But if he didn't, it would have all ended then and there. A true respect and friendship to carry on to with what they started to the end.
It must have been very hard for all of them members when the Barrett family asked them to not contact Syd anymore. They didn’t even attended his funeral. Very sad indeed how their friendship ended, but we can tell they all loved him.
I lost my ex to mental illness... She decided to go at 27, so she joined "the club". Man, was that a fucking blow... I lost my fiancee... Rest easy, baby doll. I know you're looking after me. I don't even know how to begin to say how grateful I am to Roger for giving her those little moments of joy before darkness took over, taking her along with it. "Wish You Were Here" is a song by English rock band Pink Floyd, released as the title track of their 1975 album of the same name. Guitarist/vocalist David Gilmour and bassist/vocalist Roger Waters collaborated in writing the music, with Gilmour singing lead vocals.
Roger can be so interesting to listen to. Imagine sitting next to him and having a discussion. I don't always agree with everything he says but can you imagine. Having a chit chat
It's a great song, and Waters always talks about how much he misses Syd Barrett, but I've heard that none of the members of Pink Floyd went to his funeral when he passed away!
Syd wrote 52 songs. He was a talented, gifted young man. Unfortunately, Syd started taking drugs at a very early age. At 22, Syd was a sick person. How did Syd Barrett live in 80, 90, or 2000 years???? How long did he fight his drug addiction? ??? Was Syd in a psychiatric hospital??? A sad story. Syd lived in an inner prison. I don't know if he ever found release or peace for his soul??? He painted pictures and lit them in his garden. Why did he live so isolated???
Psychotic symptoms eventually leads someone to have a very restricted routine, trying to reduce whatever could be triggering a form of suffering. This is not good at the end because our brain is always up to new connections, so along the years he may got some form of dementia as well for being out of touch and not learning new things. It's understandable though when we think about how he could relate his illness to the same part of his life that he was exposed to the light, as the lyrics say Edit: I couldn't find where it is but in RUclips there's an interview with Syd's sister that really gives more insight on this

Waters even ripped off the naked women on cover of Syds first solo record for his own first solo record.

Without this guy Pink Floyd wouldn't have an identity let alone lasted long enough to have made it. Certainly David Gilmour's incredible vocals and guitar playing were important, but Roger kept Pink Floyd grounded in real life, with excellent lyrics, and honesty etc. They criticize this band for many reasons, for extreme prog-rock embellishment sometimes, but actually Roger Waters was punk before punk was even invented
Syd Barrett took enough LSD to truly let go of his ego permanently which detached him from this man mad reality that deemed him insane for being on the outside looking in at the other side of insanity that is socially acceptable.
