It's really strange. You would assume that Japanese people would be proud when other races want to embrace their culture and become one of them.
Technically she's representing the 'country' of Japan, not the stereotypical, physical 'race' associated with the Japanese.
Hans S fair enough, it's true that certain racial characteristics should be represented in these competitions. You wouldn't want a white caucasian of European descent to be representing Japan on the sole basis of their nationality being Japanese.
Tell that to Japanese people. They associate the two together. There's no diversity in Japan, so she would be a poor representation either way.
But I might beg to differ abut caucasians representing Japan. Caucasians are the symbol of beauty in Japan. They literally try to be caucasian, they don't even deny it. Telling someone "you look like a foreigner (implying caucasian)" is a compliment to most people. I would not be surprised if they did pick a caucasian one year.

The sad truth is that if she looked more stereotypically Japanese she would not have this problem even though she is still half and half. People don't really care what mixed blood you have but care what genes are expressed and what pigment your skin is.

She looks definitely more African-American than Japanese, so it's not suprising at all for a country with such a relatively homogeneous ethnicity that she is not fully accepted by some Japanese to represent Japan. What is surprising is that she could win such an event.
In comparison, ethnically diverse America has had only two Asian American Miss Americas so far, and the last one, of Indian ancestry, received many xenophobic and racist comments.

pianopera This is a big contradiction what some Japanese say that "she doesn't look like Japanese so she shouldn't have won the contest". Because all recent winners of this contest don't have typical Japanese bodies, it seems one who has a body like Western models can win the contest. So I don't see any problem that this African-American girl won the conrest. Though I don't think she will look nice in Japanese Kimono...you shouldn't have long legs for Kimono.
***** Most people are referring to her facial features, not body. She's not even that tall, only 5'9. Japan's female models are usually in the 5'10, 5'11 range, but they actually look Japanese. American Miss Americas also have bodies that look nothing like a typical American. Last I checked, most Americans aren't thin at all. They're usually fat.
SwaG Ok, anyway regardless of "definition of Miss Japan" of this contest, I prefer somebody as Miss Japan who really has typical Japanese face and appearance (I know this is also quite subjective matter though). And aside from this discussion, she is a breautiful girl I think.

Japanese culture is very homogeneous even the children of Korean immigrants who have lived in the country for generations and look and talk like Japanese people are considered foreigners. I am not surprised that a half black woman is not recognized as Japanese.
Historically Japan has had little immigration and the values are completely different then the colonial immigrant nations in the Americas where the local population are dying minorities.

The term 'Japanese' does not have the same connotation as 'American'. Japanese is an ethnic group. Chinese and Koreans who became neutralized Japanese citizens have to change their names to Japanese, speak Japanese and live like Japanese, not revealing their ethnicity for the fear of discrimination.
The comments are not 'hostile' but honest.
People who plan to marry another ethnic group (not referring to Caucasians marrying Caucasians; East Asians marrying East Asians), should think of the dilemma your kids will have to suffer and discrimination they have to face.

Your comment about Japan and Korea might be true but China is a different case. The reason is China has so many ethnic groups and they looked different. For example, Uyghur in Xinjiang, Russian in Notherneastern China. Besides, Chinese people will be thrilled if half-Chinese consider themselves as Chinese.

If you are mixed (I am myself) then identify as mixed. I dont claim that I am "Chinese", I am a kiwi (new zealander) with an ethnic background of chinese and maori. If I get told I am not either of these then thats fine because technically I am not. I am mixed and proud to be so, you should teach your daughter the same. I am Japanese, and she without a doubt looks better than most of our women. No crooked teeth, significantly above average cheek bones, has a "higher" nose than most Japanese women. If anyone said she wasn't Japanese they are definitely jealous. What reason is there not to think she's Japanese? There's millions of Japanese that have the same tan as she does too. Especially teens, since they are exposed to sunlight a lot more than adults. In Japan, every woman wants to be white, since they think it will make them look better. I think the problem is that traditional japanese people sees japanese as a race, not a matter of where you were born. Japan is the least racially mixed nation in the world, for centuries it was almost cut off from all other ethnicities. They seem proud of their century old lineage where pure bloods are part of the same lineage. They respect other races and treat you nicely, but don't want people to meddle with their culture by bringing stuff from their other culture if they are mixed. No broken lineage, you might as well be 100% italian. You will as a mixed japanese not be hated, but treated like a foreigner who married into the family.

Some of them probably feel that this defeats the point of having a beauty contest among nations. (whether this indeed defeats the purpose of a beauty contest among nations is another matter.) I just don't understand why the BBC writers would call the tweets "downright hostile". (And even if they wanted, on purpose, to show Japanese netizens hating on Ms Miyamoto, couldn't they find some tweets that are more obviously hostile, rather than the uncertain tweets shown here?)
+HerrWagnerfreund that's not the same thing. She was born and raised in Japan AND has one parent that is Japanese. She is culturally and ethnically Japanese, she just also happens to have another ad mixture in their. We get half our genetic code from our mothers and half from our father's, we are equal parts both parents so the mixed race not entitling her to the rights of her Japanese parent is silly.

Well, she has to belong somewhere...I would think at the very least she would take on the nationality of not only her birth country, but also of her mother (in the example of being on vacation in another while being born, fair point...but her mom IS Japanese.

+HerrWagnerfreund what about her mother's rights as a Japanese woman to raise her children in the country of their birth and the birth of her ancestors? the disconnect isn't that she isn't multi racial, the disconnect is that she also is Japanese and was raised in that culture. I would imagine Japanese people with one parent that is Korean or some other type of far east Asian, that they don't experience the same treatment she does.
If she was applying to Harvard she would say she was black, not Japanese.

As a half white half asian person, I am very annoyed at fellow half white half asians because they think they are under appreciated. In most asian countries, half whites are praised over the non-half whites. In the Philippines, the media is saturated with half white filipinos. There is no accurate representation in our own country as to what most filipinos look like. I feel so sad for my full filipino family members, because they think they are ugly for looking too asian and having dark skin. Skin whitening is a multi-billion dollar industry here. People get plastic surgery to try to get rid of their flat noses. For mixed asians who are not white, it's a different story. I have a half black half filipino friend and he gets so much hate from our own culture for being black. There is a lot of anti-blackness in asian communities. So if she was half white, it would be a different story, which is very very sad to me. It especially makes me sad, because we have been colonized by europeans, who have killed and raped so many of our ancestors and have destroyed so many elements of our culture, but filipinos, and other asians who have been colonized, still praise and kiss up to white people. It is so ingrained in our culture and it makes me sick. Many asians have the mindset of racist white people and instead of supporting our fellow people of color, we discriminate.#asiansforblacklives

She looks more mixed than most mixed people in the media (they would actually have to tell you they're mixed because you just don't see it, especially with Black people cuz Black genes are strong).
