I've owned more used cars than I care to admit, all of them requiring repair. I learned a ton about cars (to the point that I rebuilt the engine and automatic transmission in a 2000 Dodge Neon I had) and at times I enjoyed it while at others it was the bane of my existence lol. I would highly recommend that people take a hands on, DIY approach to car maintenance, it builds character, garners appreciation, and expands your understanding of all things mechanical. Not only that, but you save a boat load of cash. I've replaced more head gaskets than I can count, and those will run you a minimum of $1000 at a shop, where as the parts only total to about $100, generally speaking. At times I miss working on cars (as of now, I'm driving my first brand new car...nothing to fix, and it better stay that way for years lol) so it's kinda nice to get the experience of actually doing it without all the effort. :) Great videos, coming from a fellow gear head!
My 2002 F150 shift indicator just broke and I was so happy that you had a video that covered this issue. Unfortunately my cable bracket was broken in three places and the epoxy wouldn't work. I was lucky as one of my local auto parts stores actually had one in stock. Everything went just like the video and I was able to have everything repaired for under $15 and an hour of my time. Many thanks, Chris!
I don't drive auto transmission vehicles; I'll never need to do this repair. But I still watched the whole video from start to finish - how he makes them so entertaining I'll never know. You just CANNOT beat a ChrisFix video.
I did it! I am a lady of 59 and my 99 Ranger that looks exactly like your truck, color and all, had this problem. I ran across your video instructions and followed them exactly! It took me about an hour and I epoxied and used the zip ties. With your videos I can do these repairs and save money. Thank you ChrisFix!
I just bought an 09 Mazda b4000, and all of your content has been God sent. You've saved me a fortune fixing my vehicles over the years, and now I have all these videos about my specific truck! Thanks Chrisfix, keep up the good work
UPDATE: Fixed it!!! Thank you Thank you @ChrisFix!!! Now my shifter feels new and my truck feels like it can run another 100k. Here's what happened. I couldn't find 1/2 of the supplies at Pep Boys so I decided to disassemble the dash to take a peak and see if I need to order the plastic part from Amazon. It took about 2-1/2 hours because I had to squeeze in upside down like in some weird sex position to see underneath the dash. I also used a handheld mirror placed on the floor mat so I wouldn't have to disassemble the screws while upside down. As it turned out, the plastic was in tact and all I had to do was adjust the little wheel. Then the gear stick was still a little loose so I located the gear screw like you show in the video. Since I didn't have any blue adhesive, I just tighten the gear screw which was loose. Wow...right away I could feel the shifter stop being loose. (I'll go back after I find the blue adhesive) Meanwhile I'm all upside down and cursing because it was really tight. I know when I asked my mechanic about this months ago, they didn't want to deal with it because they figured this was going to be a costly diagnostic problem so I have to ask you: 1. How did you know that plastic and wheel was the problem and the screw at the gear shift was loose? I would have logically assumed something was going on with the stick and disassembled the dash. 2. How did you film all of this? I could not even get my hands or head under and in between all those wires to get to the screws. Anyways, you are a !#$%^ inspiration. I'm going to show my mechanic your "Cranks but won't start" video and see if I can do that myself since they tried some diagnostic and coil replacement stuff and the truck still shakes like crazy at 2000 rpm. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Can you list (or link & size) all the equipment and supplies necessary, as I don't have any of them, and will need to buy them at the local Pep Boys? Epoxy, blue adhesive, threaded torque wrench, zip ties. I wonder why auto designers use a plastic part instead of metal? They must be idiots if the newer model trucks use the same design. I have a 1999 Mazda truck which has the same exact problems as ChrisFix... down to the dead instrument lights. It's like finding a long lost brother with the same cancer LOL. The other day, my truck just died in the parking lot. It took me a hour of slamming the gear shift back and forth until some mysterious reason, it started back up again.
I'm Lucas, 16 years old from Michigan. I want to be a home mechanic someday and your videos have helped me a bunch. I have a 1989 Chevy K1500 4x4 with a supercharger, I work on it all the time and when I can't figure something out you are the first person I go to. I have to say, thank you very much for the help. You have taught a lot of people (including me) a lot of important information. If you want to see my truck I can make a video of it for you cause I think you'll really like it but it's in storage so it can't be for a couple months yet, by the way I love your corvette.
This problem on any vehicle has always driven me absolutely nuts. I'm going to ask a higher price when I sell my car now :D "Look at the alignment on that gear shift. That shit's brand new."
Thank you SO much for this video. It was much easier than I thought to replace the broken gear indicator piece. I was also glad that you added the part about checking the screws to the shifter, as mine were loose too. Took about 30 minutes to remove, replace, secure the bolts, and put the panel back on!
Thank you. Fixed it in less than 20 mins, been bothering me for years. The plastic wasn't even broken, the wheel thing just got loose. I have to replace my ball joints, and the shop quoted me over $500 to do that and an alignment..... Gonna find your video on that, and try it myself. This is the point of RUclips. Thanks Chris
+LittleGojira, that metal part is important for your safety in case of an accident. It prevents protrusion of the stuff under the dash in case of a collision.
I'm glad I watched your video, as I was going about fixing the problem totally wrong. I was under my Expedition thinking I had to disconnect the shift linkage and adjust it. I couldn't get it off as the front drive shaft was in the way (4X4), so I stoped and went to you tube. Your video came up, Thanks for an excellent video, I used 2 tiny zip ties around the broken plastic, no glue, works great ! Quick and easy ! !
I was literally going to change the steering column in my 99 Ranger XLT because I thought I had linkage problems or a bad column, you just saved me a ton of money!
the BEST instructional video I have EVER watched. no wasted time. very clear instructions. perfect camera angles. and a bonus tip that didn't even take that much time to explain. Thank you
Totally worked, thank you again for your time in making this video! I used epoxy and for a back up, I used two zip ties. Tonight is the first night, so hopefully the epoxy holds. At the very least, I learned how to easily remove the bottom of the dash, locate the part and if I need to I'll get a new one if this doesn't hold. A+ sir! A tip of the cap to you.
That little plastic piece should never have been made of plastic. Mine is needing service. This video was perfect for me. Chris thank you for making your videos clear and easy to understand. And thanks for not playing background music.
Chris , no matter the problem you always have a fix for it,it’s Amazing how much time and aggravation you have save me, not just my car but others I help, I sincerely thank you from my humble heart, your April fools ones are great one as well
2000 ranger. This solved the problem down to the broken plastic bracket, exactly as shown. I didn’t have the backing out problem but I checked as a result of this video. Just excellent all round. Thanks.
The boss of how-to car guys. You have saved my caboose more times than i can ever remember. Thank you, Chris, for what you do. I fixed my wife's car because of you.
I have a 2002 F-150. Had the same problem; however did not have to remove the panel below steering column. Simply looked up there with a flashlight and could see adjustment wheel and locking mechanism (not broken). It took about 10 seconds of adjusting and was corrected. Thank you for posting this video great job!!!
2 chicks, 2 days (we drank wine while the epoxy dried, then it turned into the next day when we finished this project), and it was finished. Works like a dream! Mahalo Chris Fix!
Good video there ChrisFix, it's quick, concise and no unnecessary blah blah. I watched the whole thing and don't even own any of those cars, you mentioned. Never the less, it is good information that I'll catalog in my brain for that future "just in case" use. One thing I've learned about gluing is, to make a glue joint stronger embed a medium into the glue. I have found the best stuff to use is old used dryer sheets. You know the fibrous kind not the foam kind. They have to be used so there is no chemicals left that might react to the glue. Plus they are easy to cut into odd shapes. I fixed both interior car handles on my moms 2013 Chevy Aveo. They are notorious for breaking in half. Bad bad Chevy design. I can't do anything about the plastic chrome that came off of them but they won't break again.
About 5-6 years ago, something happened, Chris completely changed the way he shoots his videos. Still the same content but the energy is completely different. The old “hey guys” part was shot in zombie mode, the new one “cheerful zombie slayer” 😁.
For me his current energy is extremely annoying to the point I sometimes have to pause the video just to be able to bare with it. His tutorials are so well done though it's worth sitting through it. I much prefer this style with a little bit more energy than the current one.
Dude, you just saved me a couple hundred dollars! My shift lever was stuck in park because that exact piece was broken, and I'd've needed a tow truck to get it to a shop. Thanks for helping this chick stick it to the man. ;)
FYI, the plastic piece that was glued can be ordered new from Amazon. Dorman 83244 Auto Transmission Shift Indicator Bracket. Thank you for this video. I just purchased a 1999 Mazda B4000 and with the help of this video it was an easy fix.
Thanks for the help. I couldn't get my seat to go back (electric, another problem, later) so I did it without moving seat, makes it much harder, sore back. My problem is that once I exposed the broken piece, I rolled the adjuster and it wouldn't move the indicator. I had to pull the wire to get the initial look to get to the "P". Maybe I'm missing something. I'm in Arizona, and like to get to certain stages on these fixes--yours are hands down, the most precise and easy to follow I've seen, an again thanks for that. It's real hot here now--117 degree stretch of three days coming, and I am a retired, full-time RV guy. My fix is being applied to a 2010 Ford Explorer Sport--SUV, not the pickup. If I literally pull the wire that loops onto the catch, I can get it to move easily to the "P" position on the indicator. But, using the cog adjuster as far as I can spin it to the left, I get no movement in the indicator. Do I need to maybe adjust the position of the "stopper" that is installed just to the left of the broken piece? While holding it, when trying to use the cog--it was far to the right when I first looked at it after removing the metal plate--I just have too much "play" in the wire I guess is the best I can say it. Anybody got any idea of the moving the stopper "sleeve" near the piece that is still attached after I've gotten to that point? I don't want to start messing with the wire itself. It seems like it needs to be "shortened" somehow to allow the adjustment cog to work. Thanks in advance for any help. I only have a daily window this time of year to work. I still need to tackle the extra fix you suggest. I'm getting a slight "kerplunk" when shifting between certain gears, like a loose "u" joint, but it's not consistent, and sometimes doesn't even happen so I think it's probably the other fix you recommend. You've been a great help, and, as said, your vids are lucid and do-able. I'm 69, but feel comfortable working with your help. Hal Hill, Quartzsite, AZ
Watching this video allowed me to fix the problem with a new shift indicator. One of the screws that you pointed out gets loose had actually fallen out. When that happens, you cannot adjust the position. If you tighten them up, it becomes an easy fix. Thanks for the video. It really helped!
I used the two zip tie method...worked like a charm! And I have to laugh, fixing cheap plastic with more cheap plastic. If I get 10,000 miles out of this fix I'll be happy. Oh, and didn't have to pull any panels, but was a little tight working. The bracket and adjustment knob are a lot smaller than I expected. It's located a little right (passenger side) of the bottom of the steering column. Truck is a '98 F150.
Why did I even watch this? I don't have an automatic and haven't even driven one. You are like James May, making the most bland and boring thing interesting.
instructions and video were the best I found. It turned out to be the loose bolt on the shifter bracket was the problem. That tip saved me a trip to the dealer and a pile of money. Thank you!
Pure genius! Trans shop wanted to hit me for 99 bucks for this. Glad I checked RUclips first. They tried to claim is was at the transmission linkage and that it was likely bent. 99 was to find that out not even fix it. Many thanks!!!
Great video. If you have access to a parts store that's close, the Dorman Part #83244 is about the same price ($11-15 depending on the retailer) as the epoxy (that I NEVER have on hand).
Rebecca lee baisch...thank you so very much for part number I went thru hell tryna explain what it was I needed to auto parts stores thank you so very much for the part number
I have a Ford with all the same problems so every weekend as I am working on my truck I just watch your videos and I have solved most, if not all, my problems
Thanks Chris. I always watch your vids when I need to fix my 2000 Mazda B3000 3.0L 4x4 . I rebuilt my engine and replaced my trany, transfer case, rear end and I watched your vids to do that. I really do appreciate it.
Chris you are the man, I just showed my brother this and he just completed it and it looks really good, his was terribly off, so now he's very interested to view more videos of yours, so keep them coming Chris
Thanks for the help got mine fixed . Took mine to the shop in and two weeks broke again but after I watched this I fixed it myself.. even that little white thing was broke and did what u told me to do.. Thank u again
I would think about just putting a nut that threads on that on one side of the broken plastic piece and have the nut that already came on there on the other side. that would lock it in place where it would need to go
My F-150 is doing this exact thing. Going to dig into it tomorrow and see if it's the same type of setup. Looks really easy for an "annoying" type of fix. Thanks!
i literally, just today, purchased a 2002 f 150 that has this issue. And i test drove another one prior to buying mine that also had this issue. I thought perhaps this is normal but thought i had better check with ChrisFix. Now, once again, i'm an expert mechanic after viewing another superb video and will soon fix the problem.
i fixed it! luckily the adjustment bracket wasn't broke and i was able to adjust it perfectly. also checked for the bolts that may run themselves out and they were good.
I was honestly searching for a 01-04 ranger, just because chris has so many videos pertaining to those makes, and what do you know, every thing I have fixed on it so far has been shown by Chris's videos.
Couldn't find the replacement part from Ford (mine broke at the top and couldn't use epoxy). But a couple of zip ties later, worked great. Thanks for the video - well done and very useful. One of the better I've watched on the net.
Excellent tutorial. This is such a common problem on these Ford’s, it’s ridiculous. There’s now a metal aftermarket replacement, I highly recommend it. It’s not worth buying another cheap plastic one just for this to happen again.
Chris, Thank you for posting this video. My wife's 2002 Ranger Tremor just did the same thing. It was broken too. I bought a new part and just replaced it. Easy to do thanks to your guidance. I checked the two linkage bolts and they were tight. Thank you again for this insightful video. Much appreciated!
I never comment on videos but this whole time I thought my transmission was going out.. after I did the two things you did to my ford ranger the results are staggering!!!! Thank you so much Chrisfix!!
I get lost watching these videos. By that i mean i just keep watching another and another learning about fixing cars, next thing you know im on this video. But i originally clicked how to fix a scratched rim. lol
+ChrisFix yeah man keep up the good work! And by the way, if you ever happen to get the chance to do a upholstery video such as rewrapping the interior pillars, I'd want to watch that ASAP -chris
Chris sir, wish to express my sincere thanks , thought i was having a actual trans problem repair guy was busy today couldn't take t in till tomorrow started watching vids came across this one . well slap me on the ass and call me suzy my little white dealie bobber was broke just like yours, glued it added a spacer behind it for strength and added a cable tie to holdl it tight against a wire harness for support. you freakin rock my f150 going right again i know this vid saved me 300+ ever make it to golden valley AZ ill buy lunch peace
Thank you, I have been living with this issue for a few years now, didn't know it was so easy to fix. Just saw on Amazon you can buy a metal bracket for cheaper than the plastic one. Just put in Doorman part # 83244
I wasn't even looking to adjust the gearshift indicator, I needed to fix my shift linkage which you talked about during your glue drying. I want to thank you so much you save me a couple hundred dollars taking it to the shop when I did it myself it was missing one of the bolts
Love it, fixed mine with about 10min of labor and 20min of waiting for the JBweld to dry. Worked perfectly. No epoxy handy so the weld worked great. 2002Ford F-150
Chris, you da MAN! all kidding aside I have/had both of these problems with my 95 f150 that I'm restoring. Your videos have been a blessing in my reconstruction of my truck. thanks again... Pat
Well I have been following you a little while and once again I feel the necessity of thank you for sharing what you know I'm a simple terrestrial being knowing little by little things, you have been a big help for Me doing things in my cars you are to me a philanthropist for people like me and an example for those who knowing what you know do not share their knowledge. You could be an owner of a 5 mechanic shops --AND MAYBE YOU ARE--but what you are doing is to me priceless!Thank you GOD bless you!
Thanks Chris!!! Just did this today !!!! Took 20 minutes to find my tools and 10 minutes to do it :) !!!! Now PLEASE have a video on how to fix the plastic thingy on the extended cab door handle on a 2010 Ranger that I heard breaks often like mines did!!!!
+mr me lol i guess your first tome or two trying you do. But when you're an experienced driver, even slightly, you can launch a manual car wothout rolling or burning out.
Excellent video. Today I fixed the car shift indicator of a Ford Expedition 2005 in no time (3 screws for plastic panel + 4 screws metal plate). I was lucky the plastic piece was not broken.
Good job man! Ive actually did this before on my grandpa's truck, and that was like 10yrs ago, i just got a ranger and could not remember how to do it again , LOL so thank you soooo much!
Clear, concise no small talk, perfect video and dialogue. I've saved this to go fix my 2004 Ranger tomorrow. Thanks Chris.
Did you ever get this done? Have the same issue with my 2001 Ford Ranger, is it just like the video or is there something I might miss?
I've owned more used cars than I care to admit, all of them requiring repair. Dude, you just saved me a couple hundred dollars! My shift lever was stuck in park because that exact piece was broken, and I'd've needed a tow truck to get it to a shop. Thanks for helping this chick stick it to the man. ;)
For a permanent super duty repair just replace those plastics for metal bolts.
FYI, the plastic piece that was glued can be ordered new from Amazon. Dorman 83244 Auto Transmission Shift Indicator Bracket. Thank you for this video. I just purchased a 1999 Mazda B4000 and with the help of this video it was an easy fix.
One of the best how-to videos on RUclips!!
Thanks!
+Stanlee Brown Thanks!
Stanlee Brown how to basic better

Why am I watching this? I'm supposed to be studying right now! I don't even have a car...
"Sorry, I didn't study for that test you assigned, but I do know how to align your gear indicator".

Minivan Lover I don't have a vehicle yet but will get a Subaru in 3 years or a corvette
Watching this video allowed me to fix the problem with a new shift indicator. One of the screws that you pointed out gets loose had actually fallen out. When that happens, you cannot adjust the position. If you tighten them up, it becomes an easy fix. Thanks for the video. It really helped!
you are pretty damn good at your job man
+ReptileBG thank you!

@@chrisfix nicely done with this clip dude!
Nicely done
I used the two zip tie method...worked like a charm! And I have to laugh, fixing cheap plastic with more cheap plastic. If I get 10,000 miles out of this fix I'll be happy. Oh, and didn't have to pull any panels, but was a little tight working. The bracket and adjustment knob are a lot smaller than I expected. It's located a little right (passenger side) of the bottom of the steering column. Truck is a '98 F150.
Your video was great. After watching it, i went outside and fixed my Ford in 30 minutes. Now no more stress on trying to jam it in park and starting.
+Roman Ramirez Awesome! That is what I like to hear!

Thank you!
Great video man! Very detailed yet to the point. Worked perfectly for my 2003 F150. Thanks!
Pure genius! Trans shop wanted to hit me for 99 bucks for this. Glad I checked RUclips first.
They tried to claim is was at the transmission linkage and that it was likely bent. 99 was to find that out not even fix it.
Many thanks!!!

That cameraman should get a raise, he's very good. Hey, the instruction you give helps me on my nice 2002 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0L truck (same).
Great video. If you have access to a parts store that's close, the Dorman Part #83244 is about the same price ($11-15 depending on the retailer) as the epoxy (that I NEVER have on hand).
That was very helpful thank your for the part number I was going crazy tryna find this an explain what it was to the auto parts store
I love how I've got the same car as you haha, I have this same exact problem and I'm gonna have to try this sometime!
+TheKittenish Awesome haha
+ChrisFix Im a little late to this, but yeah, i have a b4000 and like every video you does your truck i just turn around and do to mine lol
Same here..
Thanks Chris. I always watch your vids when I need to fix my 2000 Mazda B3000 3.0L 4x4 . I rebuilt my engine and replaced my trany, transfer case, rear end and I watched your vids to do that. I really do appreciate it.
Man am I glad I found your channel
Thanks a lot Jay! I am glad you are finding the videos helpful!

This is the best how to video I’ve ever ever ever seen. Thank you. You are very descriptive and don’t speed through your explanations. Thank you. 🎉🎉
Excellent job demonstrating how to fix the dial indicator . Have you made any other how to videos? Thanks so much .

Millón de gracias.
I have a Ford Ranger with this same problem. I can't believe how simple it is to fix. You have a real talent. Thank you for your help.
Thanks for the help got mine fixed . Took mine to the shop in and two weeks broke again but after I watched this I fixed it myself.. even that little white thing was broke and did what u told me to do.. Thank u again
I would think about just putting a nut that threads on that on one side of the broken plastic piece and have the nut that already came on there on the other side. that would lock it in place where it would need to go
Good idea
+ChrisFix Thanks. I like your repair videos. Keep doing what your doing
Thanks man. I appreciate your support!

Gracias por el dato, me funcionó en ford Explorer 2000. Saludos desde México. 👍👍👍👍👍
De nada! I am glad the video was helpful!
Me servirá para una Ford Ranger 2000?
I was honestly searching for a 01-04 ranger, just because chris has so many videos pertaining to those makes, and what do you know, every thing I have fixed on it so far has been shown by Chris's videos.

Couldn't find the replacement part from Ford (mine broke at the top and couldn't use epoxy). But a couple of zip ties later, worked great. Thanks for the video - well done and very useful. One of the better I've watched on the net.
Anyone else seeing this recommended in quarantine
Right
Excellent tutorial. This is such a common problem on these Ford’s, it’s ridiculous. There’s now a metal aftermarket replacement, I highly recommend it. It’s not worth buying another cheap plastic one just for this to happen again.

Chris,
Thank you for posting this video. My wife's 2002 Ranger Tremor just did the same thing. It was broken too. I bought a new part and just replaced it. Easy to do thanks to your guidance. I checked the two linkage bolts and they were tight.
Thank you again for this insightful video. Much appreciated!

I get lost watching these videos. By that i mean i just keep watching another and another learning about fixing cars, next thing you know im on this video. But i originally clicked how to fix a scratched rim. lol
+HAFGaming That is awesome! I am glad you like the videos! The scratched rim video was my most recent one!
I thought hes gonna add 0 at the middle
Finally got to use one of the many videos you have posted. Helped me fix this issue on the truck I bought from my grandpa.
i have manual gear
manual trannies usually don't have a shift indicator in the dashboard (probably have one in the shift knob)
Daniel Dreyer the way to go
Maybe you'll have a Ford automatic one day. This should come in handy if the shift indicator is messed up
Taehun Lee Dodge pickups do it too.
Thank you, I have been living with this issue for a few years now, didn't know it was so easy to fix. Just saw on Amazon you can buy a metal bracket for cheaper than the plastic one. Just put in Doorman part # 83244
0:02 it’s showing that you’re missing the letter O

I wasn't even looking to adjust the gearshift indicator, I needed to fix my shift linkage which you talked about during your glue drying. I want to thank you so much you save me a couple hundred dollars taking it to the shop when I did it myself it was missing one of the bolts

LOL one time it happened to me in BeamNG Drive
I was driving my friends little Ford pick-up and the gear indicator was off. So now I can fix it for him. Thanks Chris
A better fix for this problem, drive a manual.
A good fix for not rolling backwards on hills when going forward from a stop is to drive an auto
Man that's some shitty design. Great job with the repair though.
