I have m57 e39 530d 2002 and have it for about 15 years, I have 400k km, and I have changed glow plug just once, and I think they still worked, my advice would be dont change a good part until it has failed, I did not touch the glow plug relay for 20 years and its still fine.... I change oil every 12months, LL01 spec at about 12-18k km.

My M47 (in a late pre-LCI 120d manufactured in early 2007) has covered around 150000 miles and the swirl flaps are still in there. While fitting new glow plugs (can confirm, they had indeed failed) and cleaning the intake manifold and the EGR valve, my mechanic also had a look at the flaps. He said that they were in OK condition, so they have not been replaced for the time being. I prefer having them, since they probably add a bit of low-end torque, but I'll have to check back on them regularly, and when their time comes, I think I'll replace them with aftermarket swirl flaps -- BMW doesn't sell them separately and new intake manifolds are expensive. The only problem is that the aftermarket, last I checked, is tiny -- just two small manufacturers selling their wares over eBay.

    Hi George,
love your videos but I feel as its becoming more and more repetitive with every car you have. Now don't take this the wrong way and I hope you will take this as a compliment as I found you via your N47 EGR Valve removal video and been watching you since then. But I cant help but see most of the videos you're doing are coming up the same stuff all the time on every car we have all been waiting for some coding , Diagnostics , Programming Videos which you don't seem to be doing any reason why ? I hope you don't take this the wrong way and hope you will take this as your subscribers helping you rather than taking it negatively.
    Thanks John

Hi John, i appreciate that but I just do the videos that I feel will help people like common problems, what to look for etc or what need doing on the cars.
None of my cars need any coding, programming etc so there is no content there. I have done quite a few diagnostics videos 👍🏻

    • @johncross1756

@@GeorgeAusters No thats fine George and believe us as your subscribers we appreciate you. When you say there is no coding , programming to be done what about showing us how to code and the basic's and what about programming doing a video on showing us a walkthrough with E system and ISTA-P would be good. There is loads of stuff you can do without doing it on your car ? When you put out your video revealing it you did say you was going to be doing loads more and your friend has stopped posting his last upload was last year on the software so there isn't many around anymore. At present I have my 320D off the road with a damaged ECU and I was hoping you would show us how to repair that on here as its a common issue on the N47, you do say your a BMW channel so should cater for a wide variety of people as we are all here for different reasons and if I'm honest I'm already quite mechanically minded so common problems , repairs is not something I watch much of.
How about buying a test bench setup and doing some coding videos on that instead of your car ?

Yes, but if you've disabled the EGR through the ECU then I'd probably consider deleting the EGR physically, one less thermostat and you won't have to worry about the EGR Cooler cracking internally.

Always have to laugh at these videos that have descriptions that say parts fail at 100k, 150k, whatever miles.
I have two 2001 530D Tourings (manual with 173k and an auto with 170k miles) and they haven't had any of these faults.
Oil change every 10k or so miles with premium oil and a premium oil filter, crankcase breather cleaned every other oil change.
EGRs are clean and working, I recently opened them up when I had the covers off the front of the engine to change the water pumps on each. Belts changed when changing the water pumps for convenience sake.
Had a turbo fail on the manual but this was down to the car sitting on forecourts for a year or so and the (non-BMW) dealer not doing a proper service despite what they told me.
Only other non maintenance items have been air springs recently changed on both, left-hand engine mount on the auto recently changed and a split weld on the stainless steel exhaust section where it connects to the turbo had to be re-welded.
An M57 properly maintained is pretty much bomb-proof it and the M50B20 I have in my 1993 520i Touring (235k miles) are two of the best and most reliable engines BMW have produced.
Despite what it seems the M47 isn't a shortened version of the M57 and you can't extrapolate issues/reliability from one to the other

      E60 525d LCI M57D30, car has covered 244 000km~
When I bought the car at 220 000km~, the thermostats had failed. Swapped that and the water pump, but the old water pump was rock solid. No noise from the bearing, but might aswell replace as I had everything out.
Recently replaced pulleys and belt (original belt from 2008, still looking very good, no signs of cracking, but replaced anyway). Absolutely zero play or cracks in the crank pulley.
Original EGR, probably never been cleaned. Not been an issue so far.
He's right about the glow plugs though, they've failed and I'm a little scared of doing them at this point. Patience and oil I guess.
Solenoids in my gearbox are acting up, hopefully an oil change will restore/clean them (there's no such thing as lifetime fluid..)
