Here's what it is:
The "italian accent" was a little bit exaggerated - but still... it is somehow accurate.
Italian is spoken in a higher voice than for example french or slavic languages, etc.
Nasal vowels are found in italian dialects, but much less in standard italian. When I speak in french I have to use also my nose to pronounce words correctly (especially for the end of words), it lowers my voice automatically when I have to use my nose too. My voice goes higher when I speak in german. But I slightly use my nose for german words too, especially words ending with -e or -er.
An example:
▪ *Gefühle* ("feelings")
▪ IPA*: */ɡəˈfyːlə/*
>> [e] pronounced as /ə/. *G[e]fühl[e] | ɡ[ə]ˈfyːl[ə].*

Examples in french/port./ital.:
■ "ÉMOTION" (french)
▪ émoti - *[on]*
IPA: e.mo.sj *[ɔ̃]* < 👃
>> Note how 'émotio[n]' is written with 'n' at the end, but it isn't pronounced in french, the word just ends with /ɔ̃/. Same 'habit' have portugese speakers ("emoção" > emoç- *[ão]* > imuˈs- *[ɐ̃w̃]).*
Then you have italian:
■ "EMOZION[E]" < here's the extra vowel, + 'e'

A typical italian accent is basically: 1. pronounce vowels as open vowels
2. just attach extra vowels (A, E, I, O, U) at the end - even when no extra vowels are needed:

Italian speakers tend to exaggerate vowels when they speak foreign languages. That's not a myth - it's a fact. We all have habits. My husband (portuguese) could not distinguish between a german /b/ and /w/ (not when it's found in front of an /i/). So german "[w]ieviel" ("how much") sounded like "[b]ieviel" to him. That's how he used to say it for a very long time while he was learning german. My father still says "[b]ieviel", but he's not portuguese but albanian. At this point I have also to mention that "Al[V]anós" is how you say "Al[B]anian" in greek.

Not to mention that some ppl actually have a problem to pronounce /r/, some struggle with /l/. It happnds a lot that ppl make fun of asians (the well known "he[RR]o" instead of "he[LL]o"). Actually, there are also some asians that say /l/ instead of /r/. It's not even an "asian" thing tho. And there are asians that have no problem with /l/, neither /r/ (remember: "asian" is not a language and asia is not a country but a continent).

Why do people get so offended when people don't do their accent right? For example if Jamie isn't from France then he obviously isn't going to nail the accent but at least he gave them all a go.
Gotta be honest, I'm kinda bummed how sensitive people are to non-European accents. This would have been hilarious in a Japanese, Indian, or even Nigerian accent.
But I guess it would have been a little more acceptable if the guest wasn't white.
They might have just been doing the ones that Jimmy and Jamie could do since a lot of this stuff is usually pre-planned.
