    The Try Guys just dropped their video of auditioning for Beetlejuice today, and one of them will get the opportunity to be on stage, and now I here the show is closing next year!? I never got to see it, but hopefully they will eventually release a taping of it like they did Hamilton so we all can enjoy it 😭

    The fact that TPOTO is closing is so heartbreaking for me. It’s one of the few things that can bring me joy when I’m in a bad spot emotionally/mentally. (I’m dramatic, I know). I was so shocked to hear the news.

    Truly, I just don't understand why they didn't bring Carrie Hope Fletcher over with "Bad Cinderella". She is incredible & everyone loved her in that role! I understand if she had to turn it down due to other projects, but god, I hope that was their initial goal. Everyone on the West End deserved SO much better then what that production did to them.

    • @jennybacon2429
      @jennybacon2429 Год назад +21

      From what I can gather, the West end cast was treated so badly that none of them would consider working for ALW again. CHF hasn't gone into lots of detail, but has pretty much alluded to how toxic and disappointing the whole experience was

      Oh, they deserved better than that production. That's why, to my knowledge, none of them are coming over with it. There's no way in hell that, after that production, Carrie hope Fletcher or probably any of the others, were going to continue working on that train wreck of a production. It's going to become the next love never dies, almost certainly (I wish I could say it's gonna get better and reach its full potentially, cause it has a lot, but it's not going to as long as it's an Andrew Lloyd Webber show) and after the way alw treated them on west end, they're definitely done
      They're all smart enough to get off of that now, for sure

    dear evan hansen was the musical that got me into broadway, so hearing that it was closing was heartbreaking but for all of the reasons y'all said, i get why it closed. I also think it isn't really a show people want to see right now because everyone is already depressed, they don't want to see a show based on depression.

    I actually worked for the Pre-Broadway run of & Juliet in Toronto and I can confirm that the show is GREAT! In terms of new work, I think that’s the most overwhelmingly positive audience feedback we’ve had for a show in years. The whole almost two month long run nearly completely sold out just a couple weeks into the show’s run. I think it’ll take Broadway by storm once it opens. On top of the amazing music and really fun story, it also features a non-binary character and a same-sex relationship at the forefront of the plot which I absolutely love.

  • @marcblais
    @marcblais Год назад +23

    I don’t know the amount of research you did on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella (rebranded as “Bad Cinderella for its upcoming Broadway run) but it was a pure mess when it ran in London last year and was just surrounded with massive drama. I really hope they do some major work on it before opening in NY because so far… it doesn’t look good at all.

  • @AlexCorporations

    I grew up on phantom of the opera. My mom played it for me since as long as I can remember. Knowing I won’t be able to ever see it on broadway, hurts immensely. I was supposed to see it before Covid (the April of 2020, but NY shut down). I’ve seen it at my local professional theatre 3-4 times, and it won’t be back to my theater for at least 2 years. So rehearing this new broke my heart a little.

  • @ads086
    @ads086 Год назад +9

    I've heard that Phantom was losing $1m per week which contributed to the closure decision.
    Apparently the West End version closed to make changes which made it cheaper to run, but were basically only able to because ALW owns the theatre so could absorb the hit of the temporary closure.
    I think Chicago is still running because it's cheap to run - fishnet costumes and a small cast can't cost very much.
    I think the people attending Broadway at the moment are those on better incomes for the most part, and most of them will have seen the older shows over the years. So Phantom wouldn't be driving new attendees. The only people travelling again are those with money, so are likely to have seen Phantom already and would go for something fresher.
    Beetlejuice have announced a tour, and by focusing on making the tour successful they can then proceed with international stagings, as most of those require a touring setup than a long term engagement.
    Wicked, Aladdin and Lion King are still surviving because they're more of a spectacle on stage, and they're far more child-friendly than Phantom so you're able to draw more of an audience - kid pester power is effective.
    Theatres sitting empty, especially as tourism starts to increase over the years, will drive both revivals of popular properties of the past, but also fresh works. A company who owns multiple properties would take a bet each way - one revival and one new works - and see what sticks. It's less risky, and generates income more than letting it set empty. So there's hope for the future both for new works, but also for fresh takes on classic pieces by producers/directors willing to try.

    I recently got into theater as of 2022. My first show I went to see was Dear Evan Hansen. Shortly after it closed. I was hoping to see more shows after that, specifically Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Come From Away, Beetlejuice, Phantom of the Opera, Chicago, and Wicked. As I learn more about these shows I find out that multiple of them are closing and there is no way I will be able to see all of them in time. I was very dissapointed because of this. It felt like these shows were being stripped from me one after another and that it was my fault for being late to the party. This is my first time hearing that Phantom is officially coming off Broadway and I don't know why this makes me so disappointed. I haven't even seen the show before and I don't know if I'll like it or not, but for some reason I've been clinging on to this little spec of hope that I'd be able to see it, on broadway, in the future. All these shows dropping has sort of made me give up hope for actually being able to see anything at all. These constant disappointments have made me want to stop liking anything related to theater so that I won't feel so sad all the time. I hope I'll be able to stick around the community, but I'm walking on thin ice right now.

I saw a tweet that said something like: "A Strange Loop closing does not mean that new, innovative, Black/queer stories should not be produced, it means that Broadway tickets are inaccessible and the industry as a whole is unstable."

But that’s what happens when it’s been a decade since you sang in chorus, and now smoke w33d to help with chronic pain/illness. Now I’m more a soprano 2 than a soprano 1, but ugh. I agree. Come From Away is the one that broke my heart. Was so surprised by how much I loved it and how heartwarming the show is. Seen live three times, once in NYC, and the procast too many times to count. I think Dear Evan Hansen has, as you said, a repeatability problem, plus they have a big tour out right now so people with access don’t need to go to NYC. The revolving door of leads is fun, but it is such a niche part it is hard to plan when someone is only in for three weeks, etc. Oh and Six? Worth. Every. Minute. So good.
    No desire at all to see Almost Famous, but one I would like to see is the gender swapped revival of 1776. I have avoided all spoilers, but am intrigued….
    It’s not the first time musicals were not greatly appealing in the upcoming season, but it may mean a swing to a great play season with a return to unique, original musicals in 3-5 years after time for development, workshop, etc.

    Losing this is very depressing. I was introduced to this thanks to middle school chorus (yeah, imagine 12-year-old me and some other 6th graders getting what could our first theater crush because we saw the 25th anniversary performance). This blows, especially since I still haven't even experienced live theater. But honestly, I am happy I at least saw a really good production on DVD. And here's hoping other shows get the same treatment. Also let's face it. AWL's recent work hasn't been interesting. Bad Cinderella (while has a decent score) might not last long of what happened at the west end happens here. So give it at least a year or two, and Phantom will be back.

With the pandemic that issue wasn't going to be resolved by switching theaters. It was only going get solved by finding ways to cut costs in operating it and more butts in seats. Phantom is super shocking. I assumed the Music Man was a limited engagement. Maybe I was wrong but DEH Into the Woods was definitely a limited engagement so it closing makes perfect sense. It's interesting how a A Strange Loop is closing despite winning best musical. DEH closing also makes sense, especially after the movie did so bad.

Also with what happened to the West End cast of Cinderella, my opinion on ALW has gone way down. I would have loved to see The Prince of Egypt get transferred over Cinderella. The last time I saw a Broadway show was in 2019 to say goodbye to Anastasia and we were planning to go back but then pandemic. As for the future of Broadway, I also have a 7 optimistic feeling. Would love to see new original shows, and a revival of Ragtime.
