I currently drive a 1981 Triumph Acclaim running on twin carbs and a condenser. I get over 50 mpg without trying, and despite having a small tank, it has a 500 mile range between fill-ups. It probably chucks out a whole bunch of Co2 as well, so it's also helping the natural world to grow. If you want to protect the environment and get maximum economy, you're much better off with an older car. As an added bonus, Tesla owners scowl at you when you overtake them. It's hilarious. I think they're just jealous of my superior range and 3 minute fill-up times at less than half the price it costs them to recharge their batteries. They're probably envious of my even panel gaps too, along with the knowledge that I can sleep soundly in my bed at night without worrying about it catching fire.
I've just got a new car (year old actually). It's a petrol Kia Stonic (non hybrid) & I love it. I've had a couple of people I know (both EV owners) asking me why I didn't go for an EV, they just couldn't understand why I didn't want an EV.

I have a 65 reg R line 2ltr diesel , a lovely drive, better than a lot of tin cans on the road today. My only negative is that it has no reversing camera, just sensors.
That engine may have the potential to put out 155bhp on day 1 from the factory using a 1.5 petrol, but glued on to a tank chassis there's no chance of using the power. Shouldn't be anything less than a 2 liter on that thing if they want it to shift. Needs torque. They went with hybrid petrol because it needs the extra torque from the battery to get moving. Shouldn't have used a turbo diesel. Same concept, better mileage, will last longer, better for the environment.
I own a 2003 Scooby WRX, my daily drive for 17 years, never over 25mpg, hey ho you only live once. Lane changing, depends how i feel on the day, middle lane or overtaking lane hoggers on dual carriageway, aargh!🏴🇬🇧
I have the same engine in my Karoq , 6 speed manual . Firstly it averages 42mpg. It’s the auto box that kills it . Rather than mild hybrid , the Karoq drops to 2 cylinders on light load under 60 mph . It’s lively enough for me… Does Edinburgh to southampton on a tank fully loaded. My car is bright orange which according to cinch accounts for 2% of car sales… What I don’t understand is that 25% of car ads use a bright orange car… but they make 90% in white, grey, black…
What saddens me is 40 odd years ago BL had a car same size as the VW, that did 70 mpg @ 70 and 130 mpg @ constant 30 mph, no one would finance it further. What really saddens me now is 50 years ago for a bet with mate, could we design a Mini that did 250 mpg, you would now call it a self charging hybrid. Thinking today, 250 may be a little high, 150 mpg though would be more viable, if only we had had a view of the future.
If its the same mild-hybrid as my Audi, its not really a hybrid.. its like a 12hp electric motor / generator that sits on the engine, that under breaking charges a 48V lithium battery, and sometimes under driving engages this 12hp (I think..) electric motor. But it feels completely random when it engages.. .sometimes when you drive away you feel like the turbo kicked in a bit earlier, and sometimes when trying to motor-brake, it will engage the electric motor to keep your speed, so you do not slow down which is very irritating lol. But driving highway, I get 0.45l/10km (~52mpg) which is not bad for a 150hp engine.
Were all modern car designers fed on alphabet spaghetti when they were kids? Talk about word salad or soup on the model numbers, do they have a private bet to see who can get the greatest jumble of letters into the model name/number?😂
Usually mild hybrids like this don’t use the electric to drive the car at all. It usually runs the start stop, air con and bits like that. They are basically normal petrol cars with an extra battery to power these ancillaries. Aren’t VW even more boring nowadays????
The difference between normal and sport mode in my Tiguan is very noticeable. The suspension tightens up and the acceleration is better. Mine is a 2021 model , 1.5 petrol and on a decent journey I get 46mpg.
@@Xenon777_ You could be right there. As ECN said there is a long lag when depressing the pedal but I've found if I push down rather than slamming my foot down on the accelerator pedal it's more responsive in normal mode.
