  • Playthrough with Sub-Zero. The Saturn port of this game is disappointing, whilst the graphics are close to the arcade, a lot of sound effects are missing. Most notably, a lot of the character speech is gone (such as Raiden's gibberish when he performs his torpedo) or is glitchy and doesn't play (such as Scorpion not saying "Get over here!" at 1:45). The intro sequence is cut short, and the game plays a little sluggish. There are also some other annoyances like the lack of any music during endings, and the way the screen glitches up when Shao Kahn explodes is really bad.
Bizarrely, there were apparently two versions of this game: a first version which went unreleased, and then this, the released version. Take a look at page 78 of SEGA Saturn official magazine's first issue:
    retrocdn.net/images/9/92/SSM_...
They reviewed it and gave it a good score. However, in their sixth issue, they had another review of it and gave it a bad score, stating it was much worse than what they originally reviewed (go to page 95):
    retrocdn.net/images/b/bf/SSM_...
The one thing that's nice with this port is that the difficulty was mostly toned way down compared to the arcade version. You can actually hit opponents with freeze blasts! The standard 12 characters are easy to beat with this tactic, however Kintaro seems to be even harder than in the arcade game, he's the most difficult opponent. Shao Kahn can be beaten with just well-timed freezes. This is also the Japanese version of the game, however all of the in-game text was left untranslated. This was also the only Saturn Mortal Kombat game to be released in Japan. Thanks to the lower difficulty, I was able to get Jade to challenge me before Shang Tsung.

Ah, shovelware. Where would Acclaim have been without it?
Seriously, though, this port and the near identical PlayStation version were put out by Acclaim the systems' releases of MK 3. Long story short is that prior to MK 3, Midway didn't have their own home publishing division, but instead had a deal with Acclaim giving Acclaim first dibs on producing home ports of Midway arcade games under license, which Acclaim jumped all over for Mortal Kombat I & II. However, by the time MK 3 rolled around, Midway's parent company WMS Industries, which also owned the Williams and Bally's brands (the Williams name mostly used for pinball by that point, while Bally's had been made the casino games division), bought the home publisher Tradewest, renaming it initially Williams Home Entertainment before just going with the Midway name. (Note the first home versions of MK 3 have the Williams label on them.) Acclaim, left out of MK 3, still held the home publishing rights to MK II for a bit longer, and pushed out the Saturn and PS 1 versions to try to capitalize on the continued popularity. Except they're pretty poor, being rushed, un-optimized messes that are plagues with loading issues and stiff gameplay. The PS 1 version wasn't even approved for release in the US by SCE America, which is why it was a Japanese exclusive.

Definitely an interesting port with an interesting backstory behind it. With some tweaking it could have been just as good as the Arcade Version, but with slightly easier difficulty. Though the programmers would probably blame it on the Saturn itself and how it was difficult to programme for, as apparently the Saturn was a challenging system to program for back in the day. The programmers probably would have wanted this game to come with an additional 8 megabyte ram expansion cartridge to make it truly arcade perfect or something back in the day. LOL.

It would be cool if the early review build would be around somewhere, given that the Official Sega Saturn Magazine did get to try it (maybe it was sent to them as well) and all. Still, it is bizarre that the final product ended up this way, especially sound-wise.
If I have to throw a super wild guess, maybe it had something to do with Probe ending up working on the MKII PS1 port as well, because both PS1 and (final) Saturn versions seem somewhat similar port-wise (sequenced BGM, constant loading, easier AI, incorrect sound at places etc.). So maybe the early review build was going to be something totally different indeed? Given that the second review complained especially about the sound and slowdowns caused by constant loading.

It was to help with load times and seeks. If they used CDDA for the soundtrack, they would have to load everything for that fight into memory first, and then go back and play the music. Instead, they used a midi soundtrack (so did PlayStation), so they could load the audio for a stage at the beginning, as midi files are very small, and they could seek on the disc to load animations for fatalities, etc., without interrupting the audio (as much).

I would argue that the music in this port is better than the compressed music in the arcade rom but the Official CD audio is still king. Wrong and missing SFX, complete different music, a lot of missing animation frames, slow gameplay, a very dumb AI and a pointless Shang Tsung - it's far away from the arcade, it appears like another game. The SNES has the best and most complete MK2-port by far.

@@Chidoski91 the SNES port can be played trough by using literally the same inputs that you use to play the arcade version, I can't say that about the Genesis or 32X port. In terms of accuracy, the SNES version is closer to the arcade. What you think is better remains your opinion.

The greatest Man in history, had no servants, and yet they called Him Master. He had no degree, and yet they called Him Teacher. He had no medicine, and yet He was called the Healer. He had no armies, and yet kings feared him. He won no military battles, and yet He conquered the world. He committed no crime, and yet they crucified Him. He was buried in a grave, and He is alive today. And His name is Jesus Christ in Greek, and in Hebrew Messiah Masía (Messiah)

SAY THE MIRACLE Repentance PRAYER daily and it will change your life! Dear Heavenly Father, I come to you now and humbly ask for your forgiveness. LORD, I confess that I'm a sinner and I've broken your Holy Law. I realize that the penalty for sin is death. I believe that JESUS CHRIST suffered and died on the Cross to take the punishment for ALL of my sins. I believe JESUS rose from the dead and I accept Him as my personal Savior. From this moment forward I give you my heart and trust you to be the LORD of my life. Please forgive ALL of my sins and send your Spirit to help me do your will. I Love You, Lord Jesus. I Praise You, Jesus. I Thank You, Jesus. I shall follow you every day of my life.
I thank you for your great love and accept your gift of eternal life, and I pray these things in JESUS name, Amen . Say this prayer faithfully, no matter what you feel, when you come to the point where you sincerely mean each word, with all your heart, something good spiritually will happen to you. You will experience Jesus, and HE will change your whole life in a very special way. You will see. A single saint fights back, and a thousand demons cry in agony. And you are that saint.
Jesus Will Never Leave Nor Forsake You
''Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him and He shall bring it to pass.” Ps 37:3-5
Jesus Christ came into this world to reach those who feel that nobody cares. The Lord’s unfailing love surrounds the one who trusts in Him. The Lord Jesus Christ does care and He is reaching the lonely and the desperate, the confused and the hurt, the depressed and the disillusioned. Jesus Christ is reaching out to you.
“But God demonstrates His own love toward us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Rom 5:8
As we turn away from our sin and turn to Christ we find forgiveness and freedom.
Jesus Christ is a Friend to the friendless.
He is a Helper to the helpless.
He gives freedom to the addicts.
    He loves the unloved.
    He accepts the outcasts.
    He changes the unchangeable.
    He forgives the unforgivable.
    He accomplishes the impossible.
    He saves sinners.
    He seeks the lost.
He gives direction to the aimless.
He gives hope to the disillusioned.
He gives Truth to the confused.
He gives joy to the depressed.
He gives purpose to the purposeless.
He gives hope to the hopeless.
    He redeems and He renews.
    He touches and transforms.
    He answers prayer.
He works miracles before our eyes.
“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; all things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Cor 5:17
God gives the very best to those who leave the choice to Him.
Have you surrendered your life to Christ? Pray to God and give Him all the bad things in your life: your hurts, disappointments, fears, failures and sins. Give them to Him and leave them with Him. Let Jesus Christ heal you inside and forgive you and cleanse you. He will change you and turn your sorrows into joys and your fears into peace of heart and mind. Submit to Him and He will give you a new direction in life.
“Repent and…be baptised in the Name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sin; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Acts 2:38
Jesus Christ gives us a new start in life and a new life to start. You not only need to surrender all your sins and failures to Him, but all the good things that He has entrusted to you as well: your talents and your abilities, your plans and your opportunities, your energy and your time, as well as your love.
