Absolutely brilliant video. I can relate to everything in this video so well. I was diagnosed with ADHD in my 50s, Dyslexia in my 30s and depression in my 40s, Im currently 57. It has caused failure of 2 marriages and a lot of anger issues, which has caused the issues with my children. I am now medicated and a lot more balanced, less angry and in a better place. Im not angry with the system not picking my autistic unique way, I am learning to find ways to except them and learn to listen before I fly off the handle.
Ey-up Eddy & Helen, I’ve come over from your other channel. I work at a school for students Autistic Spectrum Disorders. All students have been excluded from mainstream schools for various reasons. It caters for students with a high academic potential. Good for you for being open & honest about your autism. This will help you & Helen in the long run. Much respect to you. 👌🏻👍🏻
My familial relationships are unfortunately very terrible, and the majority of it is because of misunderstandings and the like. It is very hard because I grew up being very autistic and not ever knowing until I was an adult, and none of my family is autistic, so it kind of just felt my whole life like I was just completely alien to them. I did not have the capacity to communicate and function exactly the same way that they did as non-autistic people, and it kind of just always set me apart, usually negatively. Since I found out I am autistic, likely because of years of bad relationships and habits built up between us, unfortunately nothing has changed. They still don’t see my differences in communicating as a disorder that I cannot just turn off. So you are absolutely right, it unfortunately does come down to having a partner or family member who is willing and able to see and be understanding of my autistic traits, because even with both sides trying hard to connect, if one side is trying to have a neurotypical relationship with a very neurodivergent person and isn’t willing to let go of that, neither person will ever be satisfied in that relationship. Autistic traits have to be accepted and acknowledged in order to communicate with each other effectively without those communication barriers being a hinderance to them, because autism does not just go away if they ignore it.
Hi Eddie & Helen ...now don't switch off Eddie! My wife (now almost 77) received her late diagnosis at age 42 and we've been a couple now for just short of 40 years in which time she has taught me all about her 'world' thus allowing me a visa/permit into there lol. All her children (now adults) are on the spectrum, grandkids too. It's such an uncommon cluster that Cambridge University are studying it. You are fast becoming a spokesperson for autism, well done. People like you and Chris Packham - big respect to. Also, please bear in mind that the term 'normal' might just be a bit of a myth y'know....
I watch your other channel and have switched to this one. I have a grandson who is autistic. My wife has recently finished a course on the various forms of Autism, and found it very helpful. I wish you every success with this new direction you are taking.
Hi, Eddy and Helen, I really enjoyed your video. I have not been officially diagnosed with Asperger's or ASD but i have for a long time thought that i suffered with this. Your video confirms it . I also have a wonderful woman, my wife who puts up with so much from me, it's hard for her. I know i can seem uncaring and blunt sometimes but she is always there to support and help me. I couldn't cope without her.
Thanks for sharing Dean and hopefully you’ll get a diagnosis. For info, in the UK there is no such thing as an Asperger’s diagnosis. We’re all just ASD. Be careful of the online tests too, they’re just an indicator that you might be ASD. They’re also a bit like marking your own homework. The full ADOS tests have practical experiments that can’t be replicated through online tests
Thanks Eddy, I am very blunt and don’t enjoy conversations that contain nonsense and my partner of 20yrs always telling me that I don’t listen which I’ve always thought was just my lack of interest. I struggle to maintain friendships too so it is a question I ask myself but I think I am just being practical with information; being stubborn. Wow, what a thought at 64 just the other day that I too could be on the spectrum.
Hey Eddy...great video. I have a lot of empathy for you not knowing about your autism until your 50's. The positive side is you met an awesome lass when you knew about your autism and with open communication you both can understand your "quirks" (can't think of a better word). My nephew is autistic and knew very early on...and he's an awesome guy who just got married. As you say if you meet one person with autism...you've met one person. Glad you two are enjoying your time in Paris!
Love this Eddy and good on you Helen for understanding. My 22yo son is autistic, has adhd (so do i) and EUPD. The EUPD is hard, the Autism & adhd are mostly brilliant. SO much more interesting than neurotypical people generally. Quirky and like me, not different, just, not like everyone else 😊 followed you here from Tyneside life as a Geordie in exile in Oxfordshire.
Hi Eddie, thanks for the video. Me and my son have met you a couple of times outside ST James Park. My son has recently been diagnosed with autism and I have this very informative and definitely helps with my understanding of it. I look forward to watching your future videos. Keep up the excellent work pal 👍🏻
Blimey I can relate to so much of that,I understand your view on not making it a victim thing but I feel that it's been like being in a prison cell dealing with autism,im trapped trying to communicate with others but nit able to and of course you come over as ignorant or aloof etc ,but your not you just don't pick up on the things others can
Thanks Helen and Eddy for all the great content from Paris. Well done for talking about living with an unseen health condition Eddy. Also, thanks to both of you, for explaining how it can affect your relationship day to day. HWTL
Thank you ever so much for this video. I am 49 and think I am on the spectrum but never been diagnosed. I dozens of things that affect me in work life, home life and social life. I keep saying I am going to reach out for professional help but not sure where to look to.
Thanks for sharing Chris. Your first port of call is your GP and ask to put in the list for a diagnosis. It may take a couple of years however, depending on your area 👍🏻
Good morning Eddy & Helen 👋. A very open and honest talk from you. It always helps in every way when you have a caring and understanding partner in your life. I hope you continued to enjo your free day in Paris, post the match 🍻
@@Eddy-Hope Hi Eddy, you and Helen make a great team on your channel 👍 it's both " clear & natural" I'm certain ypu can both rely on each other too. Have a great weekend and let's see the Toon beat Man Utd! 🍻. Its coming up !!
I met you at St James Park before the dortmund games. I enjoy watching your videos This video has helped me as I have autism too I know exactly how it feels Looking forward to seeing you again, I enjoy watching tyneside life and makes me feel better Enjoy the festive period from Gary 👍😊
I'm a similar age to you, also in the North East with some similar background. My son has ADHD and people keep telling me I have traits of it and should be tested. Why did you decide to get tested and what were the benefits?
Hi Nige, after a lifetime of troubles and turmoil and deteriorating mental health I had a breakdown in 2018. Therapy led me to being referred for an ASD diagnosis in 2021. Knowing I have neurological challenges has made me understand myself and why I sometimes behave and react in certain ways. Being ASD also means I can avoid triggers and can lead me to let people know that I process information differently. It has been a huge relief knowing. If I’d have known whilst in the police my career would have been completely different and I would have received additional support to navigate quite a complex career path. There are also protections under the Disabilities at Works Act 👍🏻
Thanks Eddy. Thats good to know. I havent had those type of challenges but Ive been seen as different to others and I have a very strong empathy with my son who has ADHD. You channel is growing impressively - congratulations.@@Eddy-Hope
They aren’t reliable tests. You need to have the full ADOS diagnosis by NHS professionals. This includes face to face experiments and observations. The online tests will only provide an indication that there’s a possibility you may be Autistic 👍🏻
