    Tara’s speech at the end is still one of my favourite Tara moments. She’s the most emotionally mature member of the group, she knows what you’re supposed to do and knows things take time. But she also knows that the heart wants what it wants and sometimes it’s okay to let your heart win.

    After a millennium of seeing men at their worst and how their behavior affects their significant others, it's a wonder Anya was ever willing to make a life-long commitment to a mortal male at all. I think that Suave Xander proposed and made the announcement and Weak Xander postponed announcing and is having difficulty making things right now.
      He was victim of a vicious psychological attack that basically incapacitated Suave Xander and laid bare all his insecurities. His strength and weaknesses are always there and he typically muddles through with both sides contributing.
      Without the attack he would have gone ahead and gotten married and continued muddling through as he always has. This put a demonic monkey wrench in the works and derailed him. I’m not certain it would have worked out or if at some point in the future he might have self sabotaged himself. Who knows. I don’t see him backing down without the demon attack.
      If they got back together, I’m pretty sure Suave Xander would eventually reassert himself and propose again. I think he just needs time to heal from what happened to him.
      I’m not sure that Anya truly understands his mix of traits. Not sure his friends do either. Notice when he was split the friends were like Suave Xander wasn’t real and Anya thought Weak Xander was the fake one. I think she only knew him as the Suave version of himself and usually dismissed his weaker side. Now his weak side is fully exposed and Suave Xander has left the discussion, she doesn’t recognize him anymore.
      It’s a mess of a situation.

She was pushy the entire time not taking in consideration that he didn't want that or was uncertain about it. She did push him to want more for himself, but you can't do that for marriage. One happy moment in a sea of sadness. Sometimes I feel like that's all Buffy is, going from one happy island to the next, trying not to drown by the vast ocean in between them. Spike and Anya threw each other life jackets here, but that left Xander and Buffy both going under. Tara and Willow get a temporary reprieve and for a moment we get a couple who acknowledges but suspends their problems and is not in freefall. One happy moment for them and for us.

      But...I do wish more nontraditional relationship dynamics could have been explored there. Even before polyamory became recognized as a thing, I always thought that Willow was needy enough for two paramours, and both Oz and Tara put Willow's happiness first, so if they had been willing to share, and Oz further mastered his wolf, they would have made a powerful trio, one that could rival the Angel/Dru/Spike trio...

      "Future Shock" - a book by Alvin Toffler (and his wife Heidi, though she was uncredited, sigh) which came out in 1970 - predicted among a lot of other things that alternative forms of marriages would develop in the future, some of which were obviously polyamorous in nature, though they didn't use that term for it. I personally have never bought into the "one soulmate exists for everyone" idea, the numbers just don't add up. Anya and Spike are older than the rest of them (Substantially) so they're more worldly wise and mature. However, they've both still been heartbroken.
    They've said it a few times but variations of the phrase "evil, soulless thing" reminds us that Spike and Anya are supposed to be the bad guys, but it's really hard to see it so black and white because of the writing/acting and the way they were treated by their "good" partners.

    Once again, the true villain of this show (and literally everything involving any sort of interaction between sentient beings in any context) is: Miscommunication.
    Xander should have simply explained to Anya that the idea of being married terrifies him, citing his family, specifically his abusive, dysfunctional parents, as the reason why.
    He should have stated that he wants the commitment and profession of his love for Anya, but the institution of marriage frightens him, due to the association with his parents.
    Anya is deeply practical above all else. She would have surely understood.
    Then again, Buffy is a supernatural soap-opera. The conflict and drama is necessary, regardless how ridiculously it’s fabricated, or upsetting and unfortunate the consequences.

    One thing most people seem to not notice is that Anya was literally going to torture/kill Xander. She thought that she could fulfill her own wishes and was fully expecting her words to be able to curse Xander. Then she tried to get Xander's best friends to make a wish to torture/injure him when she was told she couldn't do it herself. If Willow made a wish just to please Anya, I don't think for a second Anya would be like "Yeah, I'm not gonna do this to him after all, say something else", Xander would've been tortured right there.
    She got lucky that she hooked up with Spike and changed her mind afterwards because she realized she already hurt Xander. Otherwise she'd curse Xander and Buffy would kill her because she's a demon that tortures people.

    Feelings aren't necessarily rational. Perhaps I'm projecting, but I think that when your ex moves on, it hurts, even if you understand that you have no right to make any demands of them, and it probably doesn't matter which of you did the rejection, or if it was amicable or drawn out, and probably even if you've moved on yourself. Buffy is mature about it, and has had some practice (with Riley, with Angel, and even with Parker), and has told Spike to move on, but it still hurts. It took Xander a while to get over Cordelia, and it will take him a while to get over Anya. Willow was extremely anxious at the idea of Tara seeing someone else, so much so that she "didn't wait to find out" if her suspicions were correct, and she was devastated when she saw Xander with Cordelia, even though by then she'd invited Oz on a "date". And I expect Anya will be hurt the first time she sees Xander dating someone else.
    The past is the past, but it still hurts, as Rafiki says.

    Entropy is a great name for the episode here. We can see the Season collapsing into complete randomness and disorder created by past events. The Anya/Xander meeting is so awkward, when she asks him again about getting married, he still can't commit, and Anya continues the pressure, this looks like the final straw, he keeps telling her he loves her but this isn't enough. Interesting comedy bits when Anya approaches Willow, Tara, Buffy and Dawn about hating men, and she says to Tara and Willow 'what kind of lesbians are you'. She realises that the Scoobies will never turn against Xander. A great dramatic conversation with Spike and Buffy when he tells her to 'get out' he says it with such venom we just know things have now changed. Halfrek of course obviously a bad influence on Anya who thinks Spike could be an ally. Once Spike and Anya get drunk, we inevitably see what is going to happen ( a true life reflection again, as many times this randomly happens once alcohol is involved ). Willow of course is trying to find the source of the cameras, but boy are they in for a surprise. Strangely we can see Buffy is actually hurt watching Spike have sex with Anya, he has kept her secret up until now, but as he has now totally rejected Buffy lets it out to Xander and Anya. Xander just cannot believe this is happening all at once, but that is the Entropy. Now the whole 'can of worms' has been opened, and the Entropy that is Pandora's Box' cannot be closed.

      I agree with that, and also it's fine for one person to decide that, if a relationship isn't moving in the direction they want, to not want to continue the relationship. Anya is over 1100 years old, it makes sense for her to be ready to commit and settle down, much more so than 21-year-old Xander. It sucks that they aren't on the same page, Xander really just needed to be honest about that from the start. Proposing at the end of S5 was a mistake, but an understandable one, given the circumstances they were under. Well said.
      I think people give Xander too hard a time. Not because he isn't in the wrong (he absolutely is) but I think Anya pressuring him their ENTIRE relationship is just.... completely overlooked. Because Emma is SO damn charming and funny. She pressured him into dating, pressured him into sex, pressured him into buying a place (when she had her own) and when he proposed she pretty much went FULL bridezilla.
      As you say, it makes COMPLETE sense for her character driven by the insecurities she must have.
      And none of that excuses Xander. He still had agency, and HIS mistake was making the proposal and then not having his "epiphany" until the wedding day.
      I just wish people were a LITTLE more even handed.
      Anya's reaction to Hells Bells was similar to her reaction in "where the wild things are" when she gets INSANELY angry and jealous over Xander and thinks they're breaking up bc... he didn't pursue sex with her a handful of times. (albeit, again, FAR more understandable after being jilted at the alter)
      I STILL to this day they had not committed to this storyline. Even with the obvious insecurities of both characters and the great scenes we see come from the consequences of it all... I just don't think it ACTUALLY makes sense for Xander to abandon Anya. He self destructs, but then hurts her as bad or worse than he feared he might by marrying.

      I agree with your assessment completely & have always felt the same way. Except for the end.
      Maybe it's just bc I've watched this show pretty much yearly for the last (almost) 20 years, but I can't imagine the storyline going any differently. I think the relationship is a really human portrayal in an otherwise fantasy world. Miscommunications, ideals vs. reality.
      Xander has stuff to work through - completely understandable stuff! But Anya is OLD & ready & yeah, at this point, anything that isn't a 100% enthusiastic 'yes' is going to sound like a 'no'. I think he did what he believed was the right thing in the moment. He absolutely could have gone about it in a better way, however. But it doesn't always work out despite one's intentions. your actions still have consequences & hurt other people, who get to feel how they feel. & as a teenager watching it for the first time, that was really important for me to see.

    SPOILERS FOR THE NEXT EPISODE
    Xander has the same problem here as Willow had towards him in Innocence when she discovered he was with Cordelia. What I mean by that is if Xander and Willow in Innocence and this episode want to feel hurt, they have that right, but Willow taking it out on Xander when she has heard him say he was never interested in her, and Xander left Anya at the alter show anything, it is that others (in this case Anya and in Innocence's case Xander) have a right to move on or be with someone who isn't the hurt individual. Xander taking it out on Spike because he's angry at Anya is not OK. I prefer the way Buffy handled it (which showed the audience that emotionally she is now doing better since Riley came to town). She told Spike it hurt her to see him with Anya (not in those exact words, but when they faced each other after Xander left from attempting vengeance), but she didn't get angry. The tone was a little negative, but it wasn't portraying anger. Anya telling Spike not to wish (which he wasn't thinking about on word choice) makes her the better person in dealing with her issues over Xander who still isn't. Spike and Buffy leave this episode off in a healthier place towards each other than they have been since the musical. All four still have a lot to talk about, and a long way to go towards healing, though. The episode was named Entropy for a reason. Not because of the conclusion to the episode, but because of the first 2/3'rds of it.
    The ending seems sweet, but I don't think its a good idea for Willow and Tara to "skip" the issues. Long term that could just bite them in the ass again. And in the next episode jumping into not dealing with them is the reason Tara is in Warren's line of fire. Dealing with those issues would mean not jumping into bed and not being naked nearly all day until the moment happens. Let me be clear. I am not blaming Willow or Tara for Warren's actions in killing Tara, but I do think it was too soon for Willow and Tara to just jump into bed. Whether Tara realized it or not, her death warrent unintentionally started when she said, "Can we just skip it." It created the situation putting her in Warren's line of fire. It's not her fault, but its how the butterfly effect of that situation happened. Could there have been other outcomes where she lives? Yes. But those outcomes lead back to unresolved long term issues with Tara and Willow because they just skipped the talk they needed to have.

    I think Anya said "don't" because she realized that yes, despite leaving her at the altar, Xander does still love her deeply, which is why he feels so betrayed even though it's his action that led here. And Xander hates vampires deep in his bones, ever since his buddy Jessie got turned, and then he staked him by accident in a way, and got his dust all over him. So it being Spike made it worse. He's never acknowledged much of Spike's better choices, except for the time he didn't just pick up the stake Spike failed to dust himself with and do the job. He was a little annoyed Spike didn't ask him to do it for him though...
    Xander's parents have a lot to answer for.

    I noticed that when this show is trying to make me shame someone or dislike them even, it often doesn't work for me. Because it's either too straightforward (when they try to hard, too much) or I just don't agree with their logic. And lot of such moments include Xander character one way or another. Taking into account that you can see that the series like to use him to tell smth they think I came to the conculsion that I just often disagree with the writer's logic.
    For example Anya. I can't even say that she is one of my favorite characters, I just don't mind her but they make me defend her because of this whole wedding and after that situation. How they mostly focus your attention on what she did, how they used this episode to have smth to blame her for, 'I can't even look at you after this' from him, just back off, dude. I didn't notice that you asked her when you left her and ran away. And by the way, if she really didn't care about him, didn't love him, she would just forget that dude the next day, move on and for sure she would not cry. And how they used Spike for all this... He is just a scapegoat of this season. They'll throw all sorts of crap at him.

    • @menachemsalomon
      @menachemsalomon 2 месяца назад

      I'm not sure the series is trying to get you to dislike any of its core characters. Xander does come off as hypercritical, and Anya calls him on it, and at the moment, I think our sympathies are with Anya, but I can understand Xander's point of view, however skewed it may be, and recognize it as the way people often feel, whether they have a right to or not. And Spike, we feel for him when Buffy says, "I think it is real -- for you." And we see the conflict, and can judge for ourselves whether Buffy has the correct read on the situation or not.
      There are plenty of times that I disagree with the writers of the show, or the lessons I think they are trying to impart, or with the behavior or emotions they give a character that (it seems to me) they want me to feel a certain way about. Usually it's because the morals of the show conflict with those I've been raised with, and I consider one set against the other and make my choice. So it shouldn't work for you, and you should think about what the show is trying to tell you. But the show is extremely well written, and some of its messages are more deeply hidden, not simply on the surface.

    • @Junejane4
      @Junejane4 2 месяца назад

      @@menachemsalomon Actually there are lot of examples. To not go too far, they planned to keep Spike as a villain and make his story short but he got popular so the network and producers asked them to return him and they had to do it. But sometimes you can see some kind of contempt from them towards him. Some of the writers called people who liked Buffy and Spike relationship ''serial killer lovers''. They definitely didn't approve of it. And they did everything for it to look bad. So that the audience doesn't approve of it either, just like them. Every time they push ''you are beneath me/you are a thing'' ideology. Buffy may say smth harsh but then they immediately shut it down with smth else to make people feel sorry for her. She beats the crap out of Spike. Then she cries the next minute and people are like 'Aw, poor Buffy'. You mentioned "I think it is real -- for you." Then he did what he did later. See, it works very easily. I wouldn't say that it's done very well, this manipulation is rather very noticeable. When they want people to feel sorry for someone they use it, when they want them to disapprove of smth they use it. If any one them didn't think that what they made Spike do would make people dislike him as well as their relationship, they are fools. And that's exactly what happened with the audience. For sure they didn't mind.
      And about Xander, it wouldn't hurt for someone to say at least once that he is wrong and he should be quiet when no one asks him. But he is the mouth of a writer. The most obvious example for me is when they used him to tell Buffy that she should run after Riley, apologize and beg him to stay, because 'she won't get anything better that him'. After he complained that because of all her problems like sick mother, slayer duties, his jealousy towards vampires he doesn't get enough attention from her. And since she's a slayer and she is stronger than him so he feels insecure. And he went to get "suck jobs".... And right after that he demanded that she tell him that she loved him otherwise he would dump her. And I was speechless when I realized that they tell you that Xander is right. She should run after him. This says a lot about what kind of person the writer is.
      For me they often try to tell you who is right, who is wrong, what and who you should like and what you shouldn't. But using some weird ways.

    • @menachemsalomon
      @menachemsalomon 2 месяца назад

      @@Junejane4 Point about Spike, but I think you're wrong about Xander with respect to Riley. Xander did have a good handle on how Buffy was treating Riley. And if I recall correctly, Xander's "Run!" was only after Buffy herself indicated that she did want to go after him, so Xander was just pointing out the urgency. He was laying out Buffy's choice quite starkly, but it was Buffy's choice.
      I agree with you that the writers often have their opinions about who is right and who is wrong in many situations, or what the correct choice for a character is, whether or not the character makes that choice. And that opinion often seeps through into the writing, and you or I may notice it, and I might agree or disagree. And sometimes it's subtle enough that it can influence your thinking about real life. I can think of at least one situation that was seen as controversial at the time, is probably less seen as so today (20 years later), and having the situation in _Buffy_ is likely part of the change in the way society sees it.

    • @menachemsalomon
      @menachemsalomon 2 месяца назад

      @@Junejane4 To summarize, I think I agree with you about the writers trying to tell you what your opinion should be, except I'm applying it to situations and choices, and the way you said it was about making you shame or dislike a character. And I think they're subtle enough to write each choice with a valid reason to go both ways, so I wouldn't dislike a character just for one bad choice.
      (And I don't get what you mean by shame a character, or why you would do so. I don't shame people in real life, either, though; I think it's a nasty thing to do, and is rarely virtuous.)

      Joss Whedon confirmed Xander was his self-insert. Based largely on himself and his personality.
      Which explains why Xander is largely the most useless, worthless incel-like creep he is, with only positive contributions being wish-fulfilment fiction on behalf of Whedon.
      More sickeningly though was that Joss Whedon tried to sexually assault Michelle Trachtenburg when she was a minor. And in the comics, Xander ends up marrying and having a child with Dawn.
      Disgustingly in the show, they made Dawn’s character initially have a crush on Xander. Disgusting.
