The fact that you got to this point without being spoiled for this episode is amazing in itself. A lot of shows that do musical episodes never get it right, and it offers very little to the plot. This however is the exception. Not only is this an innovative episode in term of plot and foreshadowing, it's a damn good 'musical'. The songs are really good and well structured, and just work so well in the episode. There is also great comedy in the episode with the lyrics. Of course the massive reveal for the group is Buffy telling them she was dragged out of Heaven, Spike already knew this of course, and then Dawn repeats to Buffy 'the hardest thing in this world is to live in it' the exact words Buffy said to Dawn in The Gift S5 Finale. Spike getting fed up with singing is very funny towards the end, but what an ending when Buffy follows him. It was brilliantly done, and now with Buffy and Spike kissing, the whole direction of the show takes a strange turn with some brilliant, but disturbing episodes to follow. Love the reaction again. This really was a brilliant episode, Lorne from Angel would have loved this.

"The fact that you got to this point without being spoiled for this episode is amazing in itself." I don't know about that. Hinton Battle, who played the demon, Sweet in this episode passed away recently. He won three Tonys as Featured Actors in the musicals Chicago, Ragtime (apparently a single Tony for both), The Tap Dance Kid, & Miss Saigon.
The idea for this musical came about in part due to the fact that the actors would come over to Whedon's house on the weekends and would often sing while there.
Buffy's songs are heartbreaking when you know the lyrics.

This is a fun episode. Tony, James, and Amber are the best singers out of the main cast.
This isn't the first musical episode for a normal TV show. "The Simpsons" and "Xena" have done musical episodes before this, but Buffy's musical episode is probably the most enduring in TV history. There have been Off-Off Broadway productions of it since its airing.
Staff writers David Fury and Marti Noxon appear as the mustard stain guy and fire hydrant lady (What was that about not wearing any underwear?).

To tell you the truth, my first tv musical was Xena: The Warrior Princess and then Buffy. Xena's episode came out in 1998 while this Buffy episode came out on 2001.
I don't know if there was a tv musical episode before Xena. But I'll tell you what, Nicholas Brendon has sung his parts at those meet and greet conventions. Sometimes they even hold a screen viewing of the episode to gather around with friends and cast members to sing along together.
I don't know if they still do that cuz Nicholas was the one who would initiate it or be down for a quick singing session lol. Everyone else gets shy or say they don't feel comfortable singing cuz they don't think they sound great.

I still sing along every time.
    Can't even help myself.
On my first watch I IMMEDIATELY had to watch it again to sing along.
Definitely one of the best episodes of Buffy.
Not only driving the plot forward, plenty of character development but ALSO just a banger after banger of tunes.
I STILL have Rest In Piece on playlists to this day.
The whole cast did a stellar job, though I wish Michelle Trachtenberg had felt more confidence to sing, I think her voice was lovely. And SMG was stellar, despite lacking the confidence in herself. (having three exceptional singers can't have helped, knowing that she'd STILL have to carry the performance as our protagonist)
Certainly ONE of the first musical episodes of TV. Watching Buffy reactions I learned that Xena had a musical episode (that I still haven't watched despite being a HUGE fan of the show as a kid... it awaits on my "to be watched" list along with a growing pile of new shows :P)
It definitely set a standard that I do not think has been met to this day.
You can also try out Whedon's OTHER musical show Dr Horrible's Singalong Blog.

Buffy's final song at the Bronze when she throws shade at Willow is next level story building but you wouldn't really understand that unless you saw Buffy's struggles/why she died and why it was morally ambiguous when Willow and the group decided to resurrect her *assuming* she was in a hell dimension instead of being rewarded by the Powers That Be for her cosmic sacrifice

No, not the first musical episode by quite a way (the first I personally saw was "The Bitter Suite" from S3 of "Xena: Warrior Princess", a few years before OMWF) but still one of the best IMO and along with Xena, surely a big reason it became a bit of a trend at one point (especially in genre TV).
(the 'Xena...' ep is a lot of fun - and like OMWF, genuinely moves the characters/story forward - but they arguably "cheated" a bit because only some of the cast sang their parts, others had "voice doubles". Not everyone on this episode full-on sings - Aly Hannigan only really has a couple of lines for instance - but everyone _actually_ sings their part)

Regarding 8:55 cheekbones. At some point James and Whedon had a talk where James gave Whedon a compliment about his talent and said that he would like to have such too. And Whedon replied that James has these cheekbones and that should be enough. Like this is only about his looks, that's the only thing he can provide. It also reminds me of how some men treat beautiful girls the same way. They see only their face and body. Like it's not even a person but a beautiful toy.

SMG can notoriously not sing and her parts were nearly sung by someone else, but SMG was made to sing in the end.
Autotune or a similar tool was clearly used a lot in this episode.

Pretty sure every voice was altered. Maybe not much of James' or Tony's, but I'd be surprised if all or even most of their lines were their raw voices.
Alyson said once that if she knew that they were able to change their voices like that in post, she would've been more confident and maybe up to do more singing, so it's not like it's a secret that their voices were altered.
I don't see why fans would get mad at that suggestion. They also don't look like that, that's lighting, make-up, lens and framing. Half their fights are not them and more than half the time when they are standing with their faces out of the frame it's not them either, it's a stand-in.

@@MarkusR144 Yes, of course to a certain degree all singers audio tracks are cleaned up including Adele even. However In the making of the musical mini doc u can see who sang raw & confidently and all their mistakes and who were more apprehensive. Oh, in other reactions of this musical there are many who, for some reason cannot accept that SMG's voice was helped by auto tune. It's hilarious how aggressive they are about it. 😄

While I do like your reactions and your channel, how come the video keeps disappearing to black every five seconds or so?

Editor of the video here: Hi Bob. This is to avoid copyright claims on the channel. If the episode wasn't cut up or ran for too long it wouldn't be eligible for fair use. So normally when Dakara speaks I cut the video unless it's something important, it also makes it easier to hear Dakara talk. This episode was trickier than most for copyright due to the songs.

The fact that people still get surprised that this is a musical episode is so funny to me. This is THE musical episode, as in the first one ever - the one that started the trend of shows having musical episodes!
Edit: So many great lyrics but my favourites are “Spread beneath my Willow tree” and “You make me com… plete”. Joss Whedon may be problematic but he was a damn good writer!

Why would you split this into 2 episodes??

    • @PurpleNurpleReviews
      @PurpleNurpleReviews 5 месяцев назад +6

Because it's a longer episode and also it means you get more of the video reacted to, or it'll be cut to pieces even more.

As without the split her and using her ten minute timer we would not get half the songs in.

I never understood people watching the beginning of this episode and being confused at the not talking. Even if this wasn't a musical some shows open with montages of the day starting. It's not as popular as one would expect in a TV Show, but this isn't the first or the last time for TV. I don't understand the confusion. It isn't really any different than opening to many movies. In this case, the differences are it's an episode of TV and the musical's overture.

Because it almost never happens? Movies and TV have different expectations. Those expectations are cemented even further when a show's been on several seasons.

@@camannwordsmithI get it. I guess I'm just the kind of person who lets fiction take me where it does before I let that kind of confusion take hold. That's the true confusing thing for me because I don't understand people asking if they missed an episode with _Superstar,_ either.
