    One thing I haven’t seen people comment on when watching this is the way Buffy sings her big reveal to the others. There’s a real dissonance in tone when she sing “Heaven”, and it sound quite jarring and musically “off”. It really catches you out and unsettles you. But that of course is the point, driving home the reality of what Willow has done. And Willow’s horrified expression is just heartbreaking.

    Preparing for the episode was physically difficult for some of the cast members, most of whom had little experience singing and dancing. They spent three months in voice training. Two choreographers worked with Joss Whedon and the cast on dance sequences. Michelle Trachtenberg, who is trained in ballet, requested a dance sequence in lieu of a significant singing part and Alyson Hannigan, according to Whedon, begged him not to give her many lines. Sarah Michelle Gellar told the BBC that "It took something like 19 hours of singing and 17 hours of dancing in between shooting four other episodes" and she was so anxious about singing that she "hated every moment of it". When Whedon suggested using a voice double for her, however, she said, "I basically started to cry and said, 'You mean someone else is going to do my big emotional turning point for the season?' In the end, it was an incredible experience and I'm glad I did it. And I never want to do it again.

    Not just a musical episode, but THE musical episode. It resonates for every character, but it's only 20 years later I realised how clever it was as a narrative device as well. The whole episode was a "truth bomb" reset. People mostly start singing about whatever they're trying not to say out loud (Right down to the big curtain). The plot could have gotten so twisted with who knows what and who's keeping secrets from whom, and this episode cleared the decks in a way that was necessary and so much fun. 😁

Joseph LoDuca's style is more in tune with classic Broadway. Both episodes' narratives definitely function differently. The fact that you got to this point without being spoiled for this episode is amazing in itself. A lot of shows that do musical episodes never get it right, and it offers very little to the plot. This however is the exception. Not only is this an innovative episode in term of plot and foreshadowing, it's a damn good 'musical'. The songs are really good and well structured, and just work so well in the episode. There is also great comedy in the episode with the lyrics. Of course the massive reveal for the group is Buffy telling them she was dragged out of Heaven, Spike already knew this of course, and then Dawn repeats to Buffy 'the hardest thing in this world is to live in it' the exact words Buffy said to Dawn in The Gift S5 Finale. Spike getting fed up with singing is very funny towards the end, but what an ending when Buffy follows him. It was brilliantly done, and now with Buffy and Spike kissing, the whole direction of the show takes a strange turn with some brilliant, but disturbing episodes to follow. Love the reaction again. This really was a brilliant episode, Lorne from Angel would have loved this.

    Also for people who were watching this when it originally came out, Buffy's line about Dawn being in trouble "must be Tuesday" Buffy aired on Tuesdays for the majority of its original run, but definitely at this point.
    One of my favorite lines in one of the songs is Willow's "I think this line is mostly filler" and if I remember correctly this came out of the fact that Alyson Hannigan requested that she have as little singing as possible.

    Tara singing "I'm Under Your Spell" was so perfect, because she was in fact under Willow's spell - she's been violated by the woman she loves.
    Willow's arrogance and willingness to "solve" everything she doesn't want to deal with by using magic is now revealed to the world, she's been selfish and it is time to...face the music.

    Episode 7 is usually a turning point in previous seasons and this one defines turning/ setting a season. Every character bluntly tells their most innermost thoughts and emotions because of a musical demon is brilliant. Another reason BTVS is unique and can not be grouped with other shows.
    Finally, your reaction to this episode was excellent and may be one of the most insightful ones I have seen by any reactor.I commend you on being able to balance the surprise factor, the enjoyment, and the focus on the lyrics that drive plot and character progression. Almost everyone on the first viewing is swept away and so not realize the depth of the storytelling. Almost every musical is about the show and the music in Once More, With Feeling sounds so bouncy and upbeat , most people miss what is really happening.
    Keep up the great work .

    Tony Head is a former stage star, brilliant actor with a great voice and a lot of vocal training. When Giles is singing his song, Joss Whedon said the intent was that he feels like a parent that needs to let their kid stand on their own, not take care of everything for them so they can learn to stand on their own.
    I love the fact that Spike says "I hope you burn," and then is literally the one who stops her from burning. That, and when he tells one of the puppet guys to sing, and then they talk.

  • @julieb.5860
    @julieb.5860 4 месяца назад +1

    the singing went on because the demon sang 'say you're happy now, once more with feeling'. so they had to sing one more song before they were done.
    i love how spike sang 'so one of us is living' indicating that he is, essentially, not alive.
    when tara referred to 'the lord of the dance ... but not the scary one' , she was referring to michael flatley. riverdance was a dancing musical that was taking the world by storm, and that was flatley's nickname.
    sarah michelle actually wanted her voice to be dubbed by another singer, but the fact that they sing their own pain makes it more real, and more important than whether they sing well.
    there have been a number of musical episodes for shows since this one, but not one of them has captured the essence of the show with each word sung, as it is here. so it still remains, brilliantly, number one.
    sorry for the lack of capital letters. when i do that, my keyboard sometimes wonks out.

That's just so thoughtful and caring. This is THE musical episode! So many other shows try to do what this show did and rarely succeed. I still listen to these songs weekly. Consequences are definitely something the gang needs to experience. The one issue I have after this episode is that Xander never experiences consequences for his actions. He summoned a demon that got a man killed, and they never acknowledge that. Reminds me when he got to hide from consequences back in season one while a hyena. He tries to sexually assault Buffy, and instead of apologizing he pretends to not remember anything. This is a character flaw with him that irks me because of how Xander responds to others who behave similarly.

      Frankly Xander being the one to summon the demon never made any sense. He’s kinda dumb but he’s not, you know, stupid; plus how did he even learn about it? My head canon is that he’s taking the fall here for Dawn, who accidentally summoned Sweet when she stole the talisman.

I'm surprised Glory the God didn't have a thing for him. Faith did hook-up with Xander, but that really doesn't count that much. (The apartment rental lady, we didn't know what her deal is. • @arc7375
      @arc7375 7 месяцев назад

      Considering a slayer is essentially a human having been given a demon vaccination, I’d say it counts.
      Slayers are anti vampires.
      Vampires are the active essence of an ancient demon that mutate dead humans and allow the corpse to then be possessed by different demons.
      A slayer is the inert essence of an unknown demon that mutates living human females yet allow the human soul to continue to inhabit the living human.

    3:43 - When Tara realizes that Willow has been playing with her memory...so heartbreaking, especially knowing how Glory had messed with Tara's mind last season ("I'm under your spell/God how can this be?/Playing with my memory/You know I've been through hell/Willow, don't you see?/There'll be nothing left of me")...But I had forgotten that maybe Tara got the whole thing started. In the episode "Family" Tara cast that spell on the whole gang so they couldn't see demons.

    • @arc7375
      @arc7375 7 месяцев назад +4

      There’s a difference in being gaslit and abused by your family into thinking you’re a demon and inherently evil, raised to believe everyone will hate and abandon you and using a spell to hide the demon part of yourself so you won’t be persecuted (though it was just a lie to control her by the family) and then routinely violating someone’s mind and autonomy with no consent just because it suits you and you can.
      What Willow is doing is continually drugging Tara everytime Tara says or does something that she doesn’t like.

    Trachtenberg did indeed request a dance rather than a song because of her prior training in dance. Not a bad decision or compromise, but I wish she'd sung, bc her brief soliloquy was beautiful.
    I think she was truly underrated throughout her time on Buffy.
    As a young teenager she joined an established, mature cast and she held her own. She gave so many credible, wonderful performances. I think too many confuse annoyance at her character (which was absolutely intended in early S5) with quality of acting.
    I know she's had a decent career... but I think she genuinely deserved better.
    Buffy's refrain at the trash fire ALWAYS makes me emotional.
    I touch the fire and it freezes me, I look into it and it's black.
    Why can't I feel, my skin should crack and peel.
    I want the fire back.
    It hits me right in the emotions I had when I first watched the show and I was in a deep depression myself.
    This is probably my favourite season precisely because of how strongly is resonated with my experiences and feelings.
    It's why I come back again and again to see people discover it all and share it once more. With feeling.

That's why he thinks he's holding her back and he's not wrong about that. She absolutely has been using him as a crutch.
