This was made as a basic radio. Not as a high performance radio.
It IS, however completely Analog.
( not a DSP).
Not marketed as a Stereo.
Compared to its highly regarded predecessor,
It’s a bit of a step back.

Excellent points.
Every radio has its own special description. This is a budget pocket radio and for me this is good, stations and signals depends on your location. Battery life is HELL YA! If you want stereo pocket radio go for a higher price!
Sony does not describe this as having stereo FM capability. Some other brands offer stereo FM tuners but the reception quality may not be as good, because the ancient Stereo FM Multiplex broadcasting system tends to be more prone to noise and distortion than Mono FM.
Nice review…. But when you say “There are other models that sound better”, we have a tendency to know what those models are, don’t we?
Excellent review, thank you for your time and buying all these radios to help us out. Like I said in another of your videos, you cant get this level of information and see side by side tests of all the radios amazon is offering by reading reviews from people scattered around the country with just the radio they got, I wasn't going to buy one until I found your reviews and settled on the Sangean SR35 as it beat the tar out of this Sony on AM, speaker and Antenna and is 3$ cheaper. I saw a picture some reviewer posted on the Sangean, he opened up the radio, it had a huge, high quality AM antenna in it, like I've never seen before, thats why it performs so well.

FYI for those reading, I got the Sangean SR35 from Amazon over 4 weeks ago, it was 18$, the Sony 21 and change. my back yard is 100 wide by 80 deep, I can hear the internal speaker clear across the yard and it sounds great. My first set of batteries, plain old everready's lasted over 4 weeks at near 8 hours a day, plus I left it on once all day and night. I've dropped it now 3 times from 3-4 feet up onto cement and tar roads, just picked it up, adjust the tuning and its good as new. I live in Morgan Hill , Ca.I can get exceptionally clear AM station KMJ fron Fresno, Ca, which is 110 miles S-SE of me and its transmitter is 30 miles S-SE of Fresno, so thats 140 miles total and we are on opposites sides of a huge mountain chain, I also pull in KSFO AM from San Francisco which is ~70 miles N-NW with many mountain chains in the way as well, in fact Morgan Hill is in an isolate valley with mountains surrounding it, I'm literately 150 feet from the edge of the eastern chain, so its amazing how many stations I get which is over 30-35 on FM and AM , thats each band not combined, turn the dail super slow the Sangean has incredible resolution KSFO 560, KMJ is 580 both are clear .
I love it ! Carry it in my pocket all day long walking about, nice small, slim, rounded corners and light, the Sony is a brick/boat, I couldn't see having that in my pocket. For 18$ this was a steal and the use I get out of it having talk radio, sports and rock n' roll with me all day is priceless, plus battery life is out of this world, I like that it uses replaceable batteries, I've seen units that have built in rechargeable but try recharging while your out and about enjoying the day somewhere and they go dead, no good then.
Big Slick is a bit to quick turning the dail in the demos, go slower and you'll find more stations, although theres only 3-4 on each band I listen to anyway. If you are my age and remember having a transistor radio as a kid then you will love the memories it brings back as much as the radio itself, or if you are feed up of your i-phone dying after a few hours of radio, or the fancy PLL digital radios dying in a day as well, then this old tech radio is for you. It has infinite memory recall functions for your stations...it's called your brain! Get one!

Of course it mono. These budget pocket radios never were stereo & not supposed to be, its not reasonable to expect stereo from this type of radio. Im 57 and had dozens of these pocket radios and none have ever been stereo and nowhere on the box do they ever claim it to be. This one does better than most by giving you mono sound in both ears, many just give sound in the left ear. All you can expect from one of these is a halfway decent tuner and just good enough sound and volume to get the job done.
Of course being mono is NOT good enough when plenty of the competition offers stereo output to the earbuds, and contrary to your assertion, I had plenty of portable am/fm radios back in the 1980s that outputted FM stereo to the earbuds.
Bottom line is that this Sony sucked in every way.
No, pocket transistor radios don't include stereo and never have. They made radios in the same size that were radio only walkmans that have stereo output. If you look around at other transistor pocket radios, same thing. I don't know where you thought that a pocket radio had stereo.
I bought this because xperia XZ does not have radio and waiting for cargo delivery. Thank you for good review.

I have all three, in my geographical area the Sony outperforms the other two, FM/AM. Bought this Sony for $18 on Amazon.
Just bought one and compared to Sangean SR-35 on FM
Sony ICF-P26 pro is the battery live and FM selectivity
Sony ICF-P26 con is the audio quality and FM sensitivity
Battery power consumption at FM with normal audio volume:
ICF-P26: 12mA average
SR-35: 32mA average
Despite the power consumption I choose for the Sangean because of the nice sound and very good FM reception.

The Sangean is probably better made, too. I don’t have one, but know that people who have one REALLY like it.
The only thing I would say is that it is a DSP radio, where the Sony is Analog.
The batteries are not abproblem if you have fingernails, and i do.It is mono,but sounds pretty good through earbuds.Thanks for the video

This is "BASIC RADIO" don't expect too much. Go for CC. crane, sangean if you want more.

I have the Roberts Sports 995 which has excellent performance on FM and AM and it can output proper stereo sound through the headphones. It has better sound quality than some of the cheap DAB radios. I listen to every station I can receive in my area.
Not a relevant comparison -- that radio does not have a built-in speaker, and also costs 3X more than the models. So it does not fit the needs of the target audience.
I bought it because it was on offer for £19.99. I wouldn't have paid £59.99 for it. I know there is no built-in speaker, but I personally prefer to listen through headphones because it sounds like Hi-Fi quality through headphones. I am a fan of Roberts. I also have the Roberts Sports DAB 5 and the Roberts Classic 993. The Roberts Sports 925 is cheaper than the Sports 995 and it has a built-in speaker and LW band as well. That one might be a relevant comparison. I am only 17 but I love radio.

I'd like to buy this radio only for listen AM stations so, I'm living in India (North Karnataka region) where I tried many Chinese portable radios but these all radios only play one local channel "Dharwad Station-765khz" only! & can't play other stations like bengaluru, gulbarga, bhadravthi and Mumbai, Indore stations?!! I don't know why this happening?!! Especially on day time only one channel I can hear! It is dharwad station?!! So can I play all radio stations in this radio?!! (Mumbai,Bengaluru,Delhi,Chennai etc stations) Please reply...

I'm living in north Karnataka Region Bagalkote District. Where I tried many Chinese portable radio sets like; 1)Sonilex SL-412FM FM/mW/sw receiver, 2) Kaide KK-9, 3) Kachibo KK-68 but I can play only 765khz-dharwad station on those radios?!!
So can I play these all frequencies which mentioned above in this radio?!!! Please reply...

Yes you can hard wire it to an external speaker, I also have plugged a wireless bluetooth transmitter in mine, and leave the radio stationary while moving the portable BT speaker about the house..

You had cheap batteries or defective batteries. I hate this Sony, but I do not think this is one of the problems that it has. The power switch prohibits current flow, so the batteries would not drain.
i'm doing a more direct test ... i've placed fully charged batteries ... and i'm not touching it for a month ... i've jotted it on my calendar ... and i'll check once a month to see if it was my human error ...
Can you tell me the two radios you were talking about that you use more often for FM and which is the better choice. I''m looking for a good radio to take out on my little john boat and I only listen to FM.

This radio is not a DSP radio! That is why you are getting the noise in between stations.
has nothing to do with it. Squelch existed long before DSP.
it is the worst radio ever made!!!! Dont spent your money, dont buy it before listen it. the sound with headphones DOESNT WORK !! You cant hear anything! The station roll button lost the position all the time!! When you change the volume you hear annoying noise ! All these are factory and built problems. Sony says that we cant do anything for these problems. I was great fun of SONY 20 years now but the quality now sucks! This radio costs 3-4 euro and i spend 30 fucking euros!!! I bought the SANGEAN dt 250 and i can hear the real sound, the built quality and the real music! KEEP AWAY FROM SONY AND THAT SIT RADIO !!!!

@@apostolisbournous9508 Yes, of course. Not massive headphones, but cheap Sony ones, but I guess any small ones or in-ear type will do, although I prefer to listen through the built-in loudspeaker. I also have a Sony ICF-P36 and ICF-306 which work just as well. You might have bought a faulty radio.
