Dave is a damn good man and I think Stephen is the best close 2nd of this generation. Then again, not so much comparing the 2. They both bring great personality and strong character to the desk and to us. Both also have some great jokes while thinking on their feet and adapting to the unscripted. Most of all. It all hardly felt scripted
when the writers strike went down - David Letterman paid EVERY SINGLE ONE ON HIS STAFF out of his own pocket. Dude is a legend, a hard worker, and not a dunce. We need class like him back in the mainstream and thank god O"Reilly is done on Faux NEws.
coinsagE46m3 while we needed them, theyve been doing this for so long you kinda cant blame them for moving away or in a different direction. Colbert took over for letterman, and Trever Noah while not fully Jon he is making strides as a good replacement. not to mention John Oliver
Problem is that Colbert did very little to point out the hypocrisy of the Clinton campaign in the run up to the Election, whereas he did plenty to ridicule Trump, Sanders and Johnson. That was what my point was. I'm glad he is taking Politics to a larger audience, but it feels like in the act of doing so he has comproomised the message he and Jon had on the Daily Show and the Colbert Report. He was High Fiving Henry Kissinger for goodness sake. Jon is Brilliant in that even when he does do cameo appearances he still seems to be largely objective and ridicules all equally. Trevor Noah is good, but he isn't Jon and it feels like with Trevor it is more the Quality of the Writing than his delivery. But he does seem to believe his message. John Oliver is definitely funny, but his Message is inconsistent. These are only my opinions/observations however and they are not set in stone and are open to alteration.
@@KP-zd3hc If only Letterman could always host The Late Show, Stewart could always host The Daily Show, and Colbert could always host The Colbert Report.
Colbert did a pretty good job, and we have last week tonight as well that destroyed him every week though. Sad thing is their audience is mostly people who would already dislike trump so it's not like they were changing anybody's minds
Joseph McDermott yeah I'm upset that letterman and Jon retired in the worst possible time. Colbert was really the only one who was in a great position to hit him where it hurts. Oliver hits the hardest but he is only on once a week. Noah is great for who he is, the daily show is pretty good it's just not great anymore. We went from 3 hosts that could hit him well to 1.5. Kimmel gives no fucks and I respect him for it but it doesn't help, and Fallon is such a suck up and pushover to everyone
Joseph McDermott yeah the Jon Stewart daily show had much more political heart to it and the correspondents are pretty much just comedians who make the jokes but they aren't deep. The only one that makes good deep jokes is Jordan, you can see it when he does field pieces but they relegated him to "white guy" in every other piece it's awful. Especially looking back at the correspondents they used to have, Steve Carell John Oliver Colbert Sam Bee and so many others. Nasan is getting much much better but the correspondents are not very good otherwise
Letterman was a lovable, sometimes gruff, doofus who had zero tolerance for BS. I like Colbert as his replacement, but Letterman will always be my #1 late night comic, like Carson is to my dad.
@@sparingpickle4918 Colbert does indeed seem to have sold out in a lot of ways. He was much better on the Colbert Report. I never really grasped how good Letterman was until he had been off the air for years. I grew up watching him now and then before I went to bed in the 90s, and I just don't remember this stuff. I must have gotten bored and turned it off when it got to the interviews.

Good on you for recognizing that by the way. I hope you're catching Colbert, Samantha Bee, Bill Maher, Seth Meyers and John Oliver!
Bill always had a tough time with guys like Letterman, Stewart, and stern. They're too big to steamroll, smart enough to be forceful in their opinions, and then funny enough to make him look foolish if he gets too worked up.

watch all of the colbert & stewart interviews. fox crew constantly cracks up. must have been awkward after....
