- When installing a driveway gate, there are few calculations you’ll want to know in order to make sure your driveway gate is going to fit properly between your posts. Luckily, they are all pretty simple and straightforward.
So today, I wanted to go over the calculations you’ll need to know in order to come up with your driveway gate post spacing, post hole width and post hole depth.
One thing to note is that this applies to both our Stronghold Iron and Infinity Aluminum gates. Unlike the fence panels that differ, installing an aluminum or iron driveway gate follows the same steps.
There are going to be 3 different calculations for determining our post hole spacing or how far apart the posts will go. The 3 will help you calculate and check your post spacing. There will be one calculation to come up with you post hole width and one calculation for getting your post hole depth. So in total, we will be looking at 5 calculations or equations in the video.
Great video. Relatively simple stuff, but nice to have it all in one place.
Glad it helped. Its odd how tough it is to find the answers to the simple stuff online sometimes!
How do you calculate the depth for different gate weights?
Most gates are going to fall into a weight range that isn't going to overcome the concrete footings. Our heaviest gate leaf at 12ft wide is about 240lbs and is supported easily by that. If you have an older refurbished antique gate or one that weighs a lot more, then it could be an issue. In that case, it typically becomes widening the hole to give more surface area support underground.
Awesome. Thank you. I welded together my own gates (ea. 8'x8'). They are just under 300lbs.
@@NSWvet83 What size posts did you go with? 6x6? If so, I would probably take that minimum 18in diameter hole and bump it to 20-24in if you have the room. For a gate that tall, I would err on the side of caution. Concrete is cheap and you only get one shot at the post foundation!
my frost line is 8'5 feet deep. Do I have to have the post go below that frost line?
That is a pretty extreme frost line depth. I doubt any company would make a post that long to extend below it. Where are you located? It may be worth asking around locally what folks are doing. Normally, 3ft is as deep as you see in the ground with 4ft sometimes being on the extreme end. I would reach out to us on the website. The specific height and type of fence may influence this as well.
@@Ironfenceshop im located in central saskatchewan. No one around us really has their property gated so im not sure.
@@Chris-jr2nu The longest post we stock for driveway gates is 10ft long in a 6x6 size. Just an FYI, I do not have a way to ship direct into Canada. If you have a freight company on the border where you can handle the into-Canada and customs part, we can ship up to the border in the US. Give us a call to discuss the frost line and shipping stuff. 800-261-2729
