Charlie; I’m a regular critic of your decision making whilst flying. You’re right about sharing mistakes whilst flying, I’m lucky to work in an aviation environment where mistakes are shared and opinions sought. In that environment you might get called a dipstick, but the epithet comes out of similar and shared experiences and a grim, black humour.
One thing I’ve criticised you for in the past and will again today is your view of less experienced pilots (around 23:05 in this vid) I fly with 500hr F/O’s regularly, they’re fresh out of training and often can teach me new stuff from the training system. I have 35 more years and 20K more hours than them, but because of how we train them these days they’re not afraid to question me. My years and hours don’t mean I’m right, their questions are all valid and have several times saved me from embarrassment.
Old age and cunning will always overcome youth and enthusiasm, but youth and enthusiasm have a very valid place in aviation. Criticism over!

Thank you John. That’s a fascinating insight and food for thought. I’ve always learned from people both younger and older in life generally, but in the context I think you’re referring to, judgment from those about a situation they have never encountered carries less weight, is all I think I meant. Or have I misunderstood?

@ your point about judgement is very valid, the original point in this video and one of your earlier ones led me to a different conclusion. This clarifies your thinking and makes more sense. However, in my environment they may have seen things I haven’t yet. As part of their base training in full flight sims covers fleet wide problems in the last few months. I’ll have seen a synopsis, usually from the manufacturer, chatted through theories with colleagues, but until my last sim session in the 6 monthly series I won’t get to see everything that happened, how that crew reacted and how there may be other answers. A youngster saying “I saw that in the sim” Will find himself having his brains picked over crew room coffee while his elders go through manuals and checklists and listen to how they dealt with it.

Good for you Charlie, keep up the videos! My grandfather was a pilot RAF before commercial. Always enjoyed hearing his stories, back in those days of course there was no RUclips to share stories and document experiences. I agree that sharing mistakes is valuable! The ability to reflect, learn and be honest should be encouraged!

I think the main if not the only driver for the haters is jealousy.
I enjoy greatly your channel (although I would love to see more seaplanes 😂) and hope to see you soin at one of the next events we are planning for 2025!

I occasionally post video about things that I think that would be helpful to others. The content is not generally controversial but I still get occasional comments that are totally unhelpful so I simply delete them and move on. Some individuals just can't help themselves in having a go at other people. I think that it is important to cancel these individuals mainly so that it cannot be seen by others since it is toxic.
If reasonable people believe that they are going to be attacked by expressing a reasonable opinion in any forum, then they are less likely to engage. Nowhere is this more prevalent than in politics. These toxic individuals need to realise that their behaviour is not acceptable, not wanted and very unhelpful.
I like your flying videos and they are of a nature that stimulates discussion and thought which is valuable.

It basically comes now to jealousy, you and I are doing something that they are simply not capable of doing.
I was one of those RUclipsrs who got so fed up with the negativity that I stopped posting, but then like you my Business RUclips continues to grow and I actually enjoy the YT process, so I am heading to be back on the wagon for flying and recording.
I believe that basically people apply their own logic and values to what you and I are doing. So all the hours spent researching/recording/editing are completely ignored, they only see the finished product and enjoy pulling it apart giving them some form of weird satisfaction - they wouldn't do all this work for free so you must be getting some hidden value from it - they don't understand how YT and social media works, so they apply their own failing logic.
I too strongly believe that the number one goal of any pilot is to be safe, followed by learning from mistakes, that re-enforces the first and then closely followed by the aim to encourage others to enjoy aviation. If one person sees what we do and says I want to be a pilot, or I learnt from a mistake we published on a video then we have succeeded. The armchair pilots, the Nath Sayers and other can go and cry into their hot chocolate and spend all their time download Flight Simulator 2024.

I have been a critic of the way you fly ( and suggested you come over for a chat over a coffee ). When I saw some of the stuff about the flyer interview I suggested that the instructional system was to blame. That started a conversation that was extremely negative with all sorts of accusations against you and by inference that I was encouraging your ( in their opinion) dangerous flying. As I had not seen all of your videos I said I was not prepared to comment on what I had not seen and definitely would not criticise you on that basis. There is a section of the GA community who seem to want to turn avation into a black art and cling to custom and practice some of which they don’t understand and call it airmanship, I suspect these are the people who are most critical of you while still using techniques and practices from the Tiger Moth era when flying a Cessna 172.

I can attest I have shared my mistakes with Charlie privately in the past. Who gives a damn even if you were able to make a living from RUclips videos. You're entitled to do so. I just hope the armchair pilots don't put you off making these videos I been enjoying them. I'm happy to give you constructive criticism or suggestions but also aware that I'm some random person on the internet and you need to make your own evaluation if it makes sense to take on that advice. It'd be nice if people were able to learn from the video and then a decent forum in the comments about how to remedy the mistakes. I think the majority of regulars on this channel are being constructive it's just those who watch only one video and make a snap decision that are ruining it for the majority of us.

Agreed. You've always been a very balanced follower, not afraid to ask tough questions, but always in a constructive way. Much appreciated. And don't worry there's plenty of content coming.

People watch videos they don’t like because they are generally of a miserable mindset. They need an outlet for their negativity and inevitably latch onto your content.
