    I wanted to buy a used leaf, but as you say 90%+ is CCS, and the chademo often broken or occupied.
    One could even watch locations with 4 Tripple chargers beeing modified to ccs only.
    The EV community really has been waiting for this, becuase there are lots of still good leafs that were suddenly useless.
    Mayve there will even a version, that can be built into the car, replacing the whole socket.

      Yeah have been looking at the Leaf here in Scandinavia also, but it seems Nissan have chosen the worst of both worlds.
      ChaDeMo, the standard that only gets fewer public fast chargers every day because old ChaDeMo capable chargers are replaced by CCS2 only and only single phase meaning max 3.6KW at home charging (Here we have 3 phase 16A so 11KW on 3 phase, but the Leaf does not support it).

    I had accepted that this will not arrive before I sell my ChaDeMo car as the next one is most likely going to have a CCS port. That said I actually like ChaDeMo better, from my experience it has less handshake issues and I’ve used the fast chargers hundreds of times over the past years. Two things worry me, though: 1) in winter the thick charging cable is very stiff and puts a lot of stress on the charging port as is, this adapter is really long and not flexible, which makes the mechanical advantage of the cable pulling sideways on the charge port even more of an issue. This is an even bigger problem for cars that don’t have the port on the front, but in the rear side instead as the cable is sometimes barely able to reach and is under tension even without the long adapter. And 2) a lot of the chargers I use every day have really short handshake time, once authorised You have to either already be plugged in or need to plug the cable in within x seconds (this is a problem with chargers that have the connectos locked to the station and the lock only disengages when You authorise charging). The need to plug the cable in to an adapter, press start and then connect it to the car doubles the handshake procedure time.

    • @gavjlewis
      @gavjlewis 10 месяцев назад

      @Dragon26112 Well obviously safety is paramount. But it's a terms and conditions question really and I can't really see them changing this if we have adapters or not.
      I really don't think they included this in the terms and conditions to stop professional adapters but to stop DIYers making sketchy home made cable extensions/adapters.
      Besides 99.9% of people won't ever go on the website of the charge network and read the terms of service anyway.
      I suspect like the Tesla ones it will be a non issue.

    $1000 is a lot of money and will it keep working? I would buy such an adapter if it is a recognized company that stands behind it (maybe it is) and offers a replacement for $250 if it breaks. Of course, I dare to buy such an adapter when you have seen it on the market for example for a year and people give good reviews. It's a little early for me, but it's great news and potentially my car has become worth more.

I bet it's eminently doable even if it cost a grand or something to provide as a service. It would be a permanent solution and safer than some hulking adapter sold from China.

    Looks like a great idea. My only concern is we purchased a type 1 to type 2 adaptor for the wife's Kia soul and it melted after a year and it would not work with my ID Buzz so in end I've had to replace our home charger to type 2 untethered. So we can charge all our cars. As we have an older leaf 30kWh which now has a range of 63 miles on a full charge. This adapter would be a game changer but not at over £1000 pounds. As I'd rather put it towards getting a replacement battery for it.

      Was it a genuine Kia cable?? My Soul is over 7 years old, and the T2-T1 adapter cable has been faultless.
      I DO now have a brand new cable, as it wasnt AC charging and the garage were desperate to try every remedy before admitting it was the OBC and replacing it under warranty (£1750 part)
      A new Kia cable is £179; I know that as they tried to charge me for it, before admitting it was an OBC failure.
      Although the price was £1500 when the 1st (non functioning) CCS adapters went out, when I checked yesterday; there were sellers touting from the mid £600 range; with a single unit for mid £700s; although VAT on top.........
      Hopefully, the price will fall further now there is a working version and other Chinese firms copy it.
      My main concern is - it has only been successfully tested on a Leaf, it would be nice to have another video demonstrating it working on other makes of car.

    I would have actually bought a Chademo -> CCS adapter. I live in Eastern Europe and here charging network is lagging behind - often a mall has only one stall with CCS and Chademo. CCS is always occupied while I haven't ever seen Chademo being used. Chademo -> CCS adapter in this case would've helped to charge in those cases.

      CHAdeMO to CCS adapters have existed for years. Tesla used to sell them, but stopped a while ago due to lack of demand.
      Many charging stations with multiple cables can only charge a car from one cable at a time, so make sure the stations you want to use are capable of charging multiple cars before buying an adapter specifically for that purpose.

  • @DarrylTalks
    @DarrylTalks 9 месяцев назад +1

    New Zealand still has many cars coming from Japan, so we have between 50% or 33% of the connectors for CHAdeMO at all public DC locations (except Tesla stations). But I have seen some places where the new installs have some 100kW+ CCS and then some 25kW CHAdeMO/CCS dispensers to the side for people with older cars, or for people who are staying for longer. I would get an adapter like that if I start finding places with no CHAdeMO. As long as there are some 25kW CHAdeMO dispensers available that would be ok for my Leaf.

    I live in the UK and I've had little trouble finding Chademo points. A lot of the new multi-charger hubs include Chademo with some at 100kw rate which is twice as fast as my 24kwh Nissan Leaf can manage. Ironically, the Chademo points are sometimes the only connection working reliably. I've even been to places where several Tesla Chargers are out but the Chademo chargers are all working. Who would have thought? But, even so, this device would be very useful. I just hope the move towards the Tesla standard in America doesn't affect Europe. It would be a disaster for a lot of people if CCS was replaced in Europe. It would be particularly annoying if you purchase one of these adapters. Great news. I'm amazed this device hasn't been rolled out by several companies before now. Dongguan could license it out to other companies. It would make a fortune among the early adopters who use Chademo.
    Now if only this device could work with Vehicle To Load as well. That would be massive.

      There's zero chance of the Tesla NACS making any kind of inroads in Europe, as it'll only handle 1-phase AC, which is a non-starter for most of 3-phase Europe. There might be a few gray-market vehicles that have NACS in your area, but chargers? Nope.
