Sinking Levi's 501 jeans in a river for one week! Dumb? Maybe, I don't know but I wanted to see what would happen. These are Levi 501's STF (shrink to fit)! They are raw, unsanforized denim straight from Levi's HQ, not selvedge! Not to be confused with Levi's LVC brand (WHICH I WILL BE REVIEWING IF LEVI'S STOPS SENDING ME FAULTY PAIRS).
I want to start a series on doing stuff like this to raw denim. But maybe just Levi's to start and then when I'm rich and famous I'll try Unbranded or Naked and Famous.

The Iron Snail is a men’s fashion vlog starring a young man named Michael and featuring a snail no bigger than a quarter. The two are set on taking over the world of fashion by creating a clothing line to end all clothing lines. Until then, we’re here to tell you EVERYTHING you need to know about the best clothing out there, from the highest quality raw denim jeans to the warmest jacket to the sturdiest boots…the Iron Snail has got you covered. (written by Taylor, though Michael is sometimes known to talk about himself in the third person… xoxo)
put them in the dishwasher
Best idea by far so far
@@TheIronSnail : Many guys I think simply used the washing machine and hot water. Few guys I knew ever wanted to wear a new pair of 501s without washing to get rid of that new look and shrink too.
Have you tried sitting in the river for a week with them on? I think that'll make for a more authentic fit
Hahahahaha yes but it made for a boring 168 hour video
@@TheIronSnail Says you.
...uploading now
I've just begun the video but yes, I do believe you should make a series of videos involving things you've put in rivers.
So far we are limited to myself, boots, and a pair of pants
@@TheIronSnail That's a good start, I'm proud of you, son.
Whoa. The jeans are fun, and yes, please keep doing stuff like this, but almost as importantly: dat bomber jacket!
I like the idea!
My suggestions are 1) putting them in salt water for a week 2) exposing them to sunlight for a week 3) Burying them in sand/pebbles 4) mudbath 5) Burying them in snow
I have no idea how the climate is like where you live, hence the different suggestions!!
Love your videos dude!!
I am in New England so i can do all of that!
Gonna need a review on that shearling-collared bomber, stat!
DEAL!
I applaud your effort and Taylor for putting up with it / I'm sure explaining to her friends and family that her boyfriend is not insane but, rather, doing it for the likes.
Yes, cold water won't shrink anything. Agitation helps but there's really no hidden trick that will make a modern off the shelf pair of $40 STF 501's look like vintage jeans from the 50's. You would have gotten more fades just tossing them in the washer and dryer every day that week. That said, you might give boiling them a try?
BOILING! Is a great idea and also don’t worry her family actually thinks she’s more insane than me
Some things do get shrinked by cold water.
👀
Here in Texas I wear my jeans for a week straight and leave em out in the sun and rise em down with the water hose and it brings out the creases.
Ahh okay good to know! I think temperature is huge
@Tony That's disgusting and the jeans will look like trash after a few hundred wear days...full of holes.
Lolol I love the cuffs in the River jeans! “Michael, that’s not gonna stay. Someone’s gonna think it’s a body.”
The length is perfect, I think jeans look best with no break, stacking changes the silhouette
I heard a story about sailors from ye olden times, used to tie their new denims to the back of the ship and drag them around the sea to fade them
Well it’s settled then I need to do this
Would you try again during the summer? Maybe the heat and dry air/humidity might effect the fades as well?
Yes! I was thinking that too
@@TheIronSnail Maybe I'll try this in the summer here in Hawaii and we can compare results! Now to find a river...
Loved this video. Your editing and process was hilarious, you got a new sub from me! Looking forward to see what else you’ll put in a river for a week 🤔😬
Hey thanks!! I know now i need to put anything i find in a River
I'm a fan of your in camera presence, subscribed!
Oh hey THANK YOU!
Id think it Depends
You did it in water that's grassy too clean too from plants
Maybe try in water with tons of rocks in it just a riverbed full of rocks just super minerally water, so it would be more abrasive to the jeans
Also ofc summer heat would do a lot, that's why the washing colds and hot stuff, science
Agreed!! I shall retry when it’s warmer!
"it's just a blood pressure problem, nothing to worry about..."
It’s one of those fun timebombs
It was a nice video anyways. I like hanging out with you and your love for denim. I've got a new Levi's trucker jacket that makes me feel powerful in some way. It makes me feel cool. I didn't think I was into fashion but at the end of it all we wear what we like. We wear what projects our style and attitude and we wear what's comfy.
Couldn’t agree more! Enjoy the jacket!
I feel like I remember that excerpt about the river... I feel like it was Catcher in the Rye or a like, so maybe a creative liberty by a writer?
Buy a new cement mixer to tumble the jeans with different types of media (rocks, nuts/bolts, knives?, etc.)
Idk, I'm from a southern city surrounded by country folks farms and work all over the southern US and have never heard of anyone doing that to their jeans. Most people I know just wear them for years while they naturally fade in the sun as the jean owner turns into leather lol. Interesting idea though.
Hahaha okay makes sense, i think it was an old old passage!
@@TheIronSnail or it was upstream from a bleach factory haha
@@TheIronSnail wait, down stream..
@Tony I actually like some of the wrangler shirts, haven't tried the jeans though.
@Tony that's interesting. I thought Wranglers were more people in the midwest and southern US rural areas and was thinking Levi's weren't that far behind. Politically, which I usually don't put two and two together with clothing, but I guess it does seem like rural people in general are more conservative with more of a majority wearing Wranglers over Levi's maybe? Looking at Political stance with clothing companies really isn't something that I do but would make sense being people in rural areas hunt much more than people in the city and obviously companies have their beliefs and want to reach the majority of their target market, there's probably some truth in tbat.
Great example of subscribing after watching 1 vid
Make the bread, put the Jeans in the woader! Hang the 501's in the window, freeze em! Great video, my girlfriend and I went on youtube to watch Watch videos ended up watching you soak your jeans in the Riva brook! Keep on creating, huge fan man!
Hey thanks so much!!
What kind of jeans are you wearing in the stream? 510,511 fit is great
Those are 1955 LVC 501’s!
@@TheIronSnail thank you^^
Np!
@@TheIronSnail Did you have those tailored at all? The fit really does look good. And since these are a higher rise jean, do you size down your waist or buy the same as lower rise levis?
They were perfect. Can’t believe you don’t like them
When are we getting a video on that sweet bomber jacket?
Couldn’t help noticing there’s now a full video on this jacket, posted one week after my above comment. Was this entirely my doing??
Frankie Muniz has style
People saying i look like him has finally started happening here too
You should put the pants in a metal cage of some kind then in a rushing river. That way they can freely move around.
Dump in sea water!!! For a year 😂😂😂
Bahaha deal!
why length 32? those look like they shrunk perfectly for you. Can cuff to show some sock game with low tops. can cuff when wearing boots or just wear them without cuffing
You should return the creek pants
Here's an idea. Just wear them like you would wear any other cloths on any other day. The jeans will form to your body by themselves and fade in the sun and form those signature lines on them on their own. You just have to wear them. The jeans will do the rest for you. I wish I could send you some pictures of my Wangers that I have worn for a few years. Some of them are so warn, they have some nice holes in them already. (Deliberately spelled Wangler). Say it out loud and you will understand.
It's content, it's supposed to be interesting.
Could it also be that modern synthetic indigo just doesn’t react the same as it used too?
Could be! I was thinking that too
That’s is absolutely impossible, synthetic indigo fades considerably faster and and more dramatically than natural indigo due to the actual chemical composition of the plant and the dying process of the yarns before the production of the fabric
Would buy Iron-Snail Cape-Cod lobster-trap-aged Levi 501s. 😅
Another great video man, thanks for this cultural critique of water and the interplay of motion and light upon azure. GG
You’re welcome man i try my best to shine on a light on what you just said GG!
what exact jacket is the shearling one? I really really really want it
Are those Dark Rinse 501s? I’ve got a pair of Dark Stonewash.
These are “rigid”!
Why the bottom area bothside is not chain stitch Levi’s 501 genuine right?
I’ve faded several pairs with the river method.
River wash hack: Go upstream about 50 yards and dump in a box of Tide. Not the little 3 pound box, It needs to be the big family size.
Hahahaha okay deal! I’ll add bleach too
Bleach? You’re a monster.
Wait now i can’t tell if you were joking or not! For the record i am 100% joking
Ha ha knew you were joking! Not only is bleach cheating it can lead to uneven fades so....
Hahaha WHEW i was like oh god
Love this video bro .
I’m intrigued doing this in the summer if it is a different result
I tried soaking my left fields for two days straight in the tub and not much happened also .
try this in the summer
I love your jacket.
Ty!
Very epic video. I'm still looking forward to your stan smith video. One weird thing I've noticed is that the newer stan smith models have a shiny leather(?) heel piece compared to the older models that I have, I don't why they did this cause frankly it looks worse.
It’s coming soon! (Spring!)
go down the shore and wash them in the ocean while wearing them
Deal!
Should have put one large boulder inside the top block and allowed the river to flow downstream through the legs.
Trying that next!
Greetings from the Yellowhammer State. Love your video my guy. Which rises a question. Your not a very outdoorsy person are you. It’s ok buddy you get sorted out as you experience life. Roll Tide 🐘
The things you own end up owning you.
That sounds like something my jeans would say before they drown me
We do not talk about that here
We just don't.
I work for levi’s and was curious about how this was gonna turn out haha next tune do this with the 501 STF 🙏🏾
Oh cool!! And these are the STF’s!
put it for 5 days in the mud
Deal
Could be that whoever wrote that thing you read about faded country jeans was a dumb ass and the reason why city folks had less faded jeans was because they were wearing the jeans differently. I'm having a hard time imagining someone buying a pair of new jeans (which was much more expensive back then) that would just leave them in a river for a week. It was a nice story though.
Lol shes eating a cup of yogert behind you lol damn thats a long drive. A washer wont work? :)
A washer can’t hold up to my demands!
What sweatshirt are you wearing at 01:00? I really like the thick collar
Champion reverse weave crew neck! Cape cod edition of course
They seem a bit short!
Sadly they ALWAYS are (until recently i was in denial)
Really a shame we didn't get an updated plant count after 4:50.
Oh god you’re right +3!
A week on the clothesline?
This hurt my soul
Whats that Music in the start? Sounds awesome
At around 3.00 aften the fairy song
ID on your hoodie at 5:46? (when you're putting the jeans in the river)
I believe it’s discontinued BUT Taylor Stitch Windslow parka in wool beach cloth, it’s a TANK
@@TheIronSnail I THOUGHT it looked like Taylor Stitches beach cloth... I need to pick something up from them in that fabric because it always catches my eye whenever I see it. Your video on their Indigo Waffle Long haul actually got me into the brand (now i'm 10+ Taylor Stitch pieces deep and counting). Love the vids dude.
@@M4xHaMpt0n yup nailed it!! The fabric is really cool and has a ton of history BUT i really like this one because it’s lined with a cotton fabric when most of the others aren’t so this one is pretty hefty with no scratch
tributary trousers
Go pull lobster pots with your dad for a day while wearing the 501s. That would be a cool video and the jeans would def get weathered.
Dude, I have that same exact jacket
The leather one?!
nice fucking jacket, I NEED TO GET IT
Hey could you review a pair of levis made and crafted jeans or jacket, I would love your opinion on them, also you can find good deals for them on ebay
Sure!
@Tony they are overpriced, but they do also have sales on the items at the end of each season which make the price more reasonable, but you can also find the lmc line on eBay for pretty good prices
put them in a hot spring
How tall are you
I would take a mans life for a pair of raw 501s and here you are throwing them in a river for a week smh.
Silly Man i am so sorry
You silly man I hope you don’t mean these Levi’s 501 in particular because these are far from mid tier denim, as a denim expert, I consider these bottom of the barrel, mabey a vintage 1933 pair but anything else is pretty mediocre
@@jairovillegas7716 Levi's are very expensive and hard to come by where I live, any 501s at all are what give me the strength to get out of bed.
New Levi's type: Cold River Wash
“We put them in a river and then we go and get them, that’s it”
@@TheIronSnail USD $10.000 Retail price right there.
Nice, experiments ftw
Ty!!!
Where you got that leather jacket at the day 5
Video about it on Friday!
I've always wanted to see in details what happens with tanned real suede leather when it gets really really wet. People always say that it gets ruined and that the colour changes, and that the material gets stained by the rain dots and such, but I just can't keep thinking it is all bullshit. Suede is, and I will always stand for that, a very tought material, and the idea of it getting ruined by literally just water sounds ridiculous to me. Anyway, I never put mine boots and jackets at risk to see what happens, and I think it will be pretty cool if you do that. There's literally not a single video of people ruining suede im RUclips, just waterproofing it and saying how fragile it is.
This is an INCREDIBLE IDEA and one i will be doing ASAP!!
I’ve never had a suede jacket get stained from rain. I’ve had them get a weird slick spot on the back of the collar though from where it rubs my neck
4:11 What pants does she have? It sounds like she said Havencreak but I’m not finding anything.
Cabin creek!
"really wet" man all gfs are the same huh
Well if you're in Hoboken, specifically, there's definitely some raw denim-obsessed, hipster millennials that'll trade you their homemade kombucha for those 501's. Does that interest you? Otherwise, that lobster trap idea sounds fun.
They might even give you their sourdough starter, too, if you really haggle.
Sadly I’d be excited to receive both of those anyway
Tha's was crazy idea, but i like it
That’s what I’m talking about!
I just saw it, but there is no significant change in your jeans. I can't wait to see it in the next few months
Same!
What is the music after 1 minute 45 seconds?
Let me follow up with you on that! I have to find it again
Make a strong hook / attachment to you car .fly your proud flag when you are out and about
Let those jeans SING!
You are doing something like a kind of testing in the laboratory.
Agreed!
I didnt know the assembly square levis had STF
They do!
That a Schott 174S? I have to know!!!
It is not!!! Vintage LL Bean, making a video about it soon!
You needed a control pair you just wash in the machine
buy a better pair of raws than that! So many good cheap options. Bravestar, Sage Denim, Soso, Unbranded, etc..
I only paid $20 for these to toss them in a river! Better Jean experiments to come though!
First off. That's not a river. Secondly. If you wanna fade ur jeans and make em super soft do some work in em.
But this is the most work I’ve ever done
Maybe put them in a cage I was saying as soon as you said lobster trap
hudson county gang yerr
RISE UP
what the hell has gone wrong with our society? And after all that, they are still too short. Who the hell spends this kind of time doing what can be done in 30 minutes in a washing machine. Stupidest thing I ever saw.
It’s all for science John Harrington!
Wear them every day even to the dismay of the gf
Oh no she’s fully invested now too
put a fire out with them
Try it in summer.
Great idea!
I hear the denim bridge guy literally lives in jeans. Would be a cool video to see you never take these off for a week.
I can do exactly that!
What’s the point of doing it in a river as apposed to a bath? Lol this is ridiculous
I only soak my jeans in rivers
Is there any other way?
Please put them in a lobster trap and tie it to the back of your bicycle. This will produce “road fadez” and will lead to “street cred “ and thumbs like subscribe bell mash ooooooooooogah
Yup we need the thumbs subscribe bell mashing!
How about if you were to buried in sand
This is a GREAT idea
the jeans that u wearing when soaking what the length ?
29!!
@@TheIronSnail so its S29 L29!?
Well technically 29 x 30!! But they shrunk an inch when soaked!
@@TheIronSnail try to get L 32 next time
Don’t worry i did already!
You should boil your denim
30 X 30 and it's to big for you rite now I'm a 32 X 30 and that's a good fits perfect. Try them again in the summer time and put it in the water from May 1, 2021 and take them out like July 15, 2021 give it 2 1/2 months in the water and see what happens
I usually go 29!
@@TheIronSnail that just shows I need to lose some weight I'm 160 lbs
Also love the idea! And everyone is build different so who knows! We are close in weight but i just am flimsy
Почему короткие? Сейчас так модно?
Я тоже обратил внимания, что там см 5 в длину будут не лишние
This is a worse idea than ocean washing
No i think it’s better
I really like your raw denim and channel, can I ask your height and weight
Sure! 5’9” and 150lbs
Wash cold in washing machine
Leave them in the sun.
Прикольный чувак и видос, но джинсы стали слишком коротки😜
