What do you think is the best realm and class for new/returning players?

I always encourage new players to start with a 'straight melee' or DPS caster, and avoid healing/speed/interrupter as their first role.
That said, some people surprise you; guy who was brand new to DAoC jumped on PAC healer and aced it last season, did a fair bit of Trio'ing with him on my Skald + Random Melee.
In terms of realm experience, while Eden Devs have sorted a lot...by far the easiest realm to Navigate initially is Hib, followed by Alb and lastly mid (who's zones originally made no sense in layout level range).
In terms of succeeding in rvr; really hard to say? Paper DAoC...Mids have a distinct edge with AoE stun for combatting zergs...hib in general open field with the baseline stun and albs with the bolt range mezz are always strong.
Personally, I like playing the underdog realm, whichever that is; more to kill :D

Interesting podcast, algorithm chucking up a DAoC podcast, my surprise this game is still going. One of my major agreements and grievances with modern MMOs is that none have really captured the realm rank system, the sense of progression and reason to fight enemies. WoW actually has the honor system (which was copied from DAoC).
As for the game itself, I thought years ago the saving grace would have been going Free2Play, I remember trying it and it was hellishly convoluted and a mess. The game thrives when you have people, without people it dies and it's the one MMO where every playstyle needs every other playstyle in order to survive.

That was my exact problem with the free to play model. It was so confusing on what was free and what was behind a pay wall. Nothing made sense.

@cottonthecleric Yeah, I call DAoC the game that missed every golden opportunity that it was given, hah. Immensely well done but I always felt that Mythic did their best to shoot themselves in the foot when the going was good (ToA being released in it's beta state, for example, NF being released without any real testing, Catacombs classes added in without actually testing the ramifications of adding them in, the list goes on!)
Might well do, I played on Phoenix when it was a thing for a bit and it was really nostalgic, and generally felt like rolling back the clock. Eden looks interesting, least of all looks like they're doing actual expansion level changes to DAoC's engine?

@@samclark7714 Eden has done so much to improve the game. The leveling system has been tweaked to be less of grind and more of a questing/task experience. Very functional if you are solo
They have added a ton of content including realm invasions which are incredibly well done.
Next week we are having an Eden dev on the podcast to talk about the changes and improvements
Again, I highly recommend checking out Eden!

@cottonthecleric It seems quiet interesting, certainly added to the playlist over the winter period.
Seems like the devs understand that DAoC needs a balance between PvE and RvR with the reintroduction of ToA skins, generally was underrated as a PvE game and had a vast amount of content that was just quite fun to do, till they decided to remove the rewards/abandon the content.
Seems like Eden is the evolution/expansion that DAoC needs to keep going, a few modern tweaks (transmog, floating text, QoL leveling adjustments) all seems like devs who understand the game and have their fingers on the pulse.
Still hold out for the day EA release the license, a DAoC2 would be very intriguing in the current climate, nothing has quite come close.

Hey guys. Nice podcast, with some great topics and some interesting dynamic between the people speaking to not make it dull or monotone.
I understand it's an early project but the perspective didnt seem quite wide enough. It was a tad bit too overshining how all of you came from the same playstyle and group under some of the topics making it not too much of a debate, if you get what I mean?
Under the topic of new players it seemed like you had too seasoned of a view and too deep roots into DAoC. For example a new player would probably be very far from how you guys imagine joining Camelot, what areas they would see as different from their usual mmo or gaming paterns and you seemed to assuming new players would gravitate towards 8v8 over zergplay, when the data dont really support that.
A brand new daoc play would need to get familiar with the hard rupt mechanics, melee styles queuing, positioning & strafing, low health slower movement, no enemy castbars and whatever else is on the long list of stuff veteran daoc-only mmo players might take for granted that a new player will have to learn and pickup on.
Coming into DAoC pvp can also seem very unforgiving, when comparing a 9sec stun or a 1min mezz or hard intertupted as a seer/caster by a pet. Other games have soft interrupts, more forgiving crowdcontrol and group pvp can argubly not seem as punishing or overwhelming with this many realms, classes and lack of identification based on knowledge. The learning curve is way more steep than you seem to remember and this might be why new players dont stick around, stop at pve-only, branch into zergplay before getting into an 8v8 scene.
The social requirements of DAoC also have 8 as a group size. WoW has 5, Warhammer had 6. It is argubly harder to find 8 likeminded sameskilled pvpers who can fit the same hobbytime on a schedule. The demand on knowledge for crafting a template, social circle for getting to understand the system behind what to do after lvl50, and many times ending up wiping in a blanketmezz due to not panning or being slower on the draw will break alot of Camelot pvpcareers at the root of the learningcurve mountain.
Just a couple of takes that I think were overlooked from too veteran views where having a group, knowledge, experience and a social circle might be taken for granted. And the noob experience is forgotten.
    Keep at it!
