Try This On Your Bathroom Vent! | Day 11 Spring Cleaning Spree 2024

- On Day 11 of the Spring Cleaning Spree 2024 we are cleaning our bathroom exhaust fans! By getting these clean, we are going to help the air in our bathroom circulate so much better, helping to prevent musty smells and mold from building up. I want to give a big shout out to @livecomposed and @WeeklyHomeCheck for introducing me to the “toilet paper” test, which helps us see how well how fans are currently functioning. It was so satisfying after cleaning the fan to see that paper stick! For the particular fan I’m cleaning in this video, I was able to remove the vent cover and fully wash it, but was not able to remove the actual fan inside. There are some bathroom fans that you can completely take down safely to make cleaning the inside a bit easier. When you go to clean your own exhaust fan, I suggest taking the time to try and Google your type of fan and see how to properly take it apart so you know exactly what you can and cannot clean. This can be a pesky task, but I know you’ll feel like a champ when you get your toilet paper to stick, too! Thanks for joining me today and see you tomorrow for Day 12!
I need the actual spring cleaning spree checklist. Anyone know where i could download one?
You can get it for free in my website - www.letscleanthatup.com/shop/

I never thought to clean that. I'm afraid of what I will find there.
It’s a very satisfying clean, you got this!
Same. I’m kind of scared of popping it open and something crawling out of all the fluff. 😅
Why are protective eyeglasses in a mass and also a hat just in case anything falls on top of your head
@@HyperWolfit happened to me when i tried to do it in my home. Big ass roach just fell down on me.
@@landonparks5390 i would scream and probably chop whatever body part it touched, off. I have never had a bug issue myself but I do recall staring at the vent one time and I SWEAR I saw a roach head staring back at me, but it looked dusty so I shrugged it off. Now I am scared. Might make my fiance do it for me and tell him I can't get the plate off lol then he will be the one to deal with it 😂😅

Don't forget to clean the actual fan blades
I always wear a mask and googles when I clean mine.
That is a great tip! I 💯 should’ve had mine on…
I never took that seriously until grit fell into my eye
Goggles might be better
It must be fate! I was recently painting my bathroom and was thinking of cleaning it. I dont think its been cleaned for a good 7 or 8 years now! Just cleaned it, and boyyyyy. A dead bee and stink bug, soooo much dark grey fluff. 🤢👍 Must clean
I know that this is a very good tip and reminder, and it's never bad to keep your living space clean, but I can't help but think "nooooooo why did you teach me it exists! Ignorance is bliss!"
I found this out myself. I have the same bath fan in my house as in this video and it was really dirty. Cleaned it up and it still works well. Except I took mine apart further to clean the whole housing and damper flap.
i think your fan will run better (less noise), filter more air (does its job), not allow trapped moisture to accumulate (mold prevention) and those all sound good to me! For a simple dusting?? I also heard they can catch fire 😬
I remember a place I rented some years ago. I noticed right away (in addition to the racket it made) that the bathroom vent had never been cleaned. It took me awhile, but I cleared away the nasty, thick mess and was rewarded with a purring vent doing its job. Wah!
I need too
That's your lazy lord's job. Omg suck pollution in your nose doing it yourself. 😮
That’s good to know. I saw last year how a house cought fire. And I couldn’t believe it was because of one of those fan lights. 😬
I really never knew how to clean it.
Thanks for showing how it can just snap off!!
!!! this should be higher!
(isn’t that a problem with lint in dryers and everywhere lint accumulates too? eep! very flammable!)
@@samaraisntuse hose to vaaccum the back and inside lint filter holder
Dawn Power Wash seems to be the cure all for everything. I guess I can fuel my car with it.
Probably good as a toothpaste too 😂
Lmaooo😂😂
any degreaser would work lol. people always recommend the most expensive version of everything. not even dish soap is safe!
Lived here for 10 years and never have cleaned these fans... YIKES! Well also the dishwasher filter... who knew it had a filter, not me.
Omgah same & I recently inherited farm & am moving in 3wks! 😱
@@TedaRthat’s awesome, a dream of mine. Enjoy and God bless you.
The dishwasher filter has to be cleaned every 3 or 4 washing cycles. Don't you read the manuals of your appliances?
My mom was Swedish, she taught me so much abt cleaning & keeping up with it. Thank you Mom!
@sonja_rademacher not if you live in an apartment complex
I'm so scared to open it, but I'll put on protective gear(goggles, mask, shower cap) to cover my hair.😮 I'll come back and let you know what happened to me and the fan. Lol.. 😁
IKR! I didn’t know there are v pounds to release the vent.
I'm praying that fan didn't take you out 🙏🏼 lol
Well... How'd it go?
Missing for 2 months 😮
I think the fan won
It's like the filter on your stove. A good soak in Dawn/hot water does the trick!!❤ I always notice this in the restrooms in restaurants... They never seem to clean them...🤢
Better yet use lysol with hot water. Lysol kills germs also. 73
Remember to dry thoroughly all the
Pieces before installing
Okay, I'm glad I'm not the only that hasn't realized this also needs to get cleaned. 😅
Also if your vent sounds like it's stuck please get it fixed right away. Mine caught a little fire while I was sleep. Woke up to burning smell and upstairs electricity out. No smoke! Thank God it didn't burn the ceiling and was easy to replace!
How did you remove the vent??? Help 😂
Most of them you just pull down and pinch the two metal wires and it will pull right out.
@@CleanThatUp
Thanx😁
0:20 the smile this man has while cleaning that fan 😂😂😂 looks like your doing what you love man, good for you keep the tips coming 👏🤙
I've been wondering how to do that since I moved into my place 3 years ago! Thank you so much!
Happy to help!
Same, I didn’t see any screws so I never thought it could come off… I usually just clean the outside of it with a swiffer duster
I would recommend zoom spout oil on the bearings with that type of fan easy to apply. Cheap and extends life of fan decades
where are the bearings ?
@@calikokat100 there are RUclips videos that explain this 2 per motor that particular motor has sleeve bearings
Ugh, this is one of the few perks of living in an apartment. I'm not ready to clean my own vents and dryer exhausts, the nice maintenance men have spoiled us😂
I live in an apartment and have NEVER had a maintenance person clean any vents or exhaust fans. They only change the HVAC filter twice a year. I change it more often than that because there's NO way that a filter can last that long especially not the flimsy filters they use. You are definitely lucky to have maintenance workers that do that for you!
Why are people so fucking lazy now a days?
@@vegaslimoguy2376because they're all on RUclips, like you.
@@vegaslimoguy2376you sound jealous. With the amount people are paying for rent for mediocre accommodations, the least landlords can do

The one thing that never crossed my mind to clean. I didn't even know I could! 🤯
You should wear a mask because of the micro dust
Yes! As I was finishing I said this exact thing… 🤦🏻♂️
😂😂😂 was his mouth open and no protection for eyes while looking up cleaning the bathroom fan???
I’m so glad your short popped up on my RUclips. I kept saying to myself I’m sure I can remove the vent cover to give it good cleaning.
Thank you
Wow never thought about this thanks
You got it!
Really good tip and a great reminder to get on that... after my coffee. ;)
Mine does NOT come off😢
Oh no! If you can find a logo or make and model I might give that a quick google. You might be able to find out how to remove it.
So every apartment bathroom vent does nothing then bc I know nobody cleans those vents lol
Don't forget to vaccum the dust and lint out of the vent before replacing cover. Excess lint can get in the motor and cause a fire.
This is great! I tried to clean ours when we moved in, but it was difficult to tell if I made any progress. It looked a little better, but they had painted *over* a layer of dust/lint, so it has a very rough texture that I won't be able to do anything about, and it prevents it from ever looking clean. The toilet paper test is a good visual. Thanks!
I would check to see if you can find new vent covers at a home improvement store.
@@Alicia_W413 That's such a good idea (and I feel silly for not having thought of it! 🤦♀️) We're actually moving to a new place very soon, so I don't think this will be our problem in the next place. Thanks for reminding me that swapping out an old cover for a new one might be a possibility if I ever run into that problem again in the future!
@@mungbean345 Have a good move. ❤
@@sonja_rademacher Thank you so much!
@@mungbean345 You're welcome. I know how exhausting moving can be. Make sure to prepare snacks or even a meal you can warm up quickly.
Thanks!
I feel bad that he didnt pay attention to you yet
It's always a really good idea to fully remove the fan to give it a good clean, the lint and dust around the motor is a fire hazard. A quick dust and vacuum like that will send a bunch of the dust and lint up the tubing when it gets turned on causing more build up. The stuff that builds up right behind the fan also needs to be cleaned out. It keeps the fan super quiet and prolongs the life of it as well. I'm also not trying to bash how you clean the fans but bathroom fans are huge fire hazards.
TP trick! Great idea. During COVID, we daily tested for leaks around negative pressure room entry doors using a similar method.
That's a great idea!
Good lord 🤣
@@TedaR😂😂😂😭🤣
Wow !!
how long has it been since you clean that fan😮
Years
My brother's a firefighter and he said that's a fire hazard!!
Thanks for the tip of the toilet paper
Method all purpose spray is GREAT for that type of stuff, dirty fan blades and grates, filters, etc. I love Powerwash but Method has worked better on most of the household stuff I've used it on, and it rinses off way easier too
Please protect your eyes with a large construction glasses and use respirator to protect your lungs 🫁 or double filter. I also manage to make to make special connection to connect to my leaves blower to blow the vent line of the fan after I disconnect the fan from the circuit breaker. It’s like 30 minutes job in total if want to do it right. By the way I replaced all my house bathroom fans with 100 cfm fans instead of the cheap 50 or 70 cfm fans.
I had to take a fire safety class once and they said the dirty bathroom exhaust is the number one thing that causes house fires!
The number _one_ thing? Not overloaded power sockets, candles or electric heaters too close to flammable objects, people falling asleep with lit cigarettes in their hand.. but a dirty bathroom fan? 🤨 I must have missed the PSAs on it
I bet!
Usually dryer lint is the biggest cause of house fires. I would clean them both regularly!
@@artyb27 idk man take it up with the fire department 🤷♀️
@@clairer342 absolutely!
Its nasty to see other people's dirty, clogged fans... how do people not notice???
Dawn powerwash is mostly water with some diluted soap with a little bit of rubbing alcohol and is extremely overpriced.
Don't overlook the blower wheel and vent pipe. I'm sure everyone has seen the dryer vent cleaning videos, this is similar. Just my 0.02$
What about all the debris that falls as you are taking the cover off & cleaning the inside? Do you have a hack to keep an exhaust fan cleaning from becoming a total bathroom cleaning? Also speak on cleaning the inside, looks like you had a brush but you didn’t narrate that part. Thanks!
Woah, I never even thought of the dry shampoo and hair spray getting in there!
I can smell clearly now the dust is goonne 🎶
😮my eyes have seen something new.
Thanks for a mich needed reminder. Just checked mine. I was and air dry my clothes on my apartment shower rod. Lint has to go someplace. In my bathroom, the vent is a decebt dryer but like a huge colector.
Thank you! My husband didn't believe me when I told him it needed cleaning.
You'd be surprised at how much dust can also get in your fire detector. Clean it when you clean your vent covers!
I am not joking. I think my grandmas vent was nver cleaned in almost 70 yrs
.
am i the only one who thinks dawn powerwash is mid? my cheap ajax works 10x better
No one ever tells you about the endless list of maintenance & cleaning you have to do after buying a house. It's exhausting 😩
It's interesting to see how different homes are in the US.
Please move into my house. I wont bother you I swear. Just do your thing.
How to prevent dust from falling on the surfaces?
I have cleaned my friends vent covers and vents. They think I'm crazy, then the see and feel the difference, so I'm not crazy.
Added to my list 👍🏼 Thank you!
Thanks for watching!

My bathroom fan is apparently not connected to anything else out of the bathroom. It just goes directly into the Attic. I noticed this recently when I looked into the Attic.
Poor workmanship and poor home inspectors!!
my bathroom no vent
Omg!!! I needed this. Thank you!
Luv 🦆DAWN water is the best eva 🎉
I never imagined it would be THAT easy to clean those vents. I always imagined it was something so complicated that you needed special cleaning equipment
Thanks for this! I need to clean mine! They didn’t clean it before I moved in!
Great advice, thanks!
So question - the bathroom in my apartment has a vent, but the light AND the fan are controlled by the same switch. In such cases, how should you turn off the fan to clean it?
get a flashlight or an extension cord with a light so you can see
Headlamps work great!
A home in my town burned to the ground from a dirty bathroom fan. If you're afraid to do it yourself, hire someone to do it for you! They are the number one most neglected appliance in the home.
Motors generate heat, and the heat can not dissipate through a motor wrapped in dust. It gets hotter and hotter until either the thermal fuse trips or the copper windings pop. sparks start the dust on fire and the rest is history.
It was one of the most SUPER DUPER HELPFUL videos I had seen in a long time. Thanks.
Would be nice to even have a vent
Great tip thank you!!'
Our apartment has it caulked and screwed into the ceiling. Then someone painted over it 😅
There’s also no air flow and no switch. I almost feel like they just put a vent there with no hole lol.
It's quite common unfortunately for bathroom vents to not actually vent to the outside!
I'm cleaning mine this week. 👌💪👌
Good idea!!!! Thanks!

Clean That Up, You're the best! I just had to subscribe!
I appreciate that!
I did it and then tested with the toilet paper and was really amused 😅 thank you!
Thank you for this. I shall be doing this to all the three vents I have in my house.👍
I cleaned mine and it still doesn't stick 😭
crappy fan I guess. Same here.
My bathroom vent consists of opening the bathroom window. It never gets clogged with dust.
Bro, you made this way harder than it has to be.
You don’t have to scrub the screen at all, simply rinse it in the shower or sink. ALL the dust falls right off and screen is immaculate.
The vacuuming is a good tip though.
I have to install an actual new fan because I cleaned it but it’s still so much moisture after a shower
Dry shampoo? Wtf is that? How would that even work??
Geez, 🤦🏽♀️, why did I click on this video .... One MO thing I gotta do........ Geesh....
The EXTERNAL vent cover is equally important, providing its ladder accessible
A little soak in hot water with some shampoo in it would also work, given that shampoo is formulated to dissolve & remove hairspray.
How do you clean the fan blades genius? Your fan is not clean if you don’t don that.
Dude is cleaning over his head without a mask? 🤡
Should we clean the vents in other rooms?
Oh nooo i need to do this thank you
We have such a big wasp problem where i live that i don’t even dare to take the cover off of the bathroom fans in my house
Dawn powerwash is sooooo good, you can watch it pull off grease
Someone watching this video talking bout “there’s my skeleton pictures”. Lol.
Huh… I didn’t even know that those covers came off. I’ve been just, like, pathetically haphazardly dusting the outside… like… maybe 2-3 times in the 5 years I’ve lived in this apartment…
Why would you ever think hair spray would help? Or dry shampoo?? Signed, a girl. LOL.
Checking my bathroom vent now to clean haha.
Better to pop the motor right out and spray out the dust with compressed air
Actual useful stuff. Not some AI generated nonsense
I had a fan in my bathroom at my old house and when you turn it on it sounds like a demon and revenant got summoned at once
My bathroom vent is stuck. I'm afraid to pull on it harder. I don't want to break it. Any suggestions?
Wearing a well-fitting N95 respirator makes this job much more pleasant if like me you have a dust allergy :)
You should promote people mixing their own "power wash" since it's literally just dawn and alcohol. It's 5x more expensive if you buy powerwash
Great tips! I’m doing this tomorrow.
Should i disconnect the electricity breaker... I'm always afraid to touch something and get electrocuted
