The fact that the ring was left lying in the middle of the most pristine & peaceful haven is just pure literary genius on the part of Tolkien. Even in the most quiet and lovely places lies a potential seed of war. Corrupting the most ordinary of folk.
You don’t think it was a strange coincidence that a fisherman was pulled to the bottom by a large fish and found it after hundreds of years? I understand it’s a book/movie but c’mon the likelihood of that is so slim
Amazing how there was absolutely zero animosity between them before Deagol took the ring from the river. The second they both laid eyes on it, their lives were over.

This scene was originally supposed to be a flashback in Two Towers, after Frodo calls Gollum by his old name in the Dead Marshes. Peter Jackson decided to make it the opening scene in Return of the King instead, which I think is brilliant for a number of reasons: 1. It subverts expectations. Fellowship opened with the Battle of the Last Alliance, and the Balrog fight kicked off Two Towers. How does Return of the King start? Two hobbits fishing. 2. It reminds the audience of how powerful and evil the Ring is, and why it must be destroyed. Within seconds of laying eyes on it Sméagol and Deagol are at each other's throats. 3. Smeagol's transformation into Gollum is one of the creepiest scenes in movie history. Jackson's horror movie credentials are undeniable, and this helps set the tone for the darkest film of the trilogy. 4. Anyone who hasn't read the books is now going to be worried that Frodo and Sam may end up killing each other over the Ring.
There’s a fifth reason: The Two Towers make you feel sympathetic towards Sméagol. But then you watch this movie, and it reveals to you how he got the ring. The books tell you how he found it in the second chapter of The Fellowship of the Ring, so anyone hasn’t read the books will be shocked when they see this.
@@lukedaley17 it was actually a great idea to put in the beginning of the movie like that we can know how smeagol became gollum when he strangled deagol to death plus deagol was in a lot more pain than frodo and sam was so deagol was the 1st one to killed and suffered a lot more pain than frodo and sam did i feel bad for deagol the most cause he suffered a lot more pain the strangling scene deagol was painfuly strangled to death i kind of feel bad for what deagol went through after suffering all that strangling on his throat
Yeah but they decided to put at as a opening scene of the return of the king I guess it was a good idea to put it in the 3rd movie before it was going to be used as a flashback in the 2 towers

I always feel so bad for smeagol here. It started so nicely and the cousins seem to truly care about each other. It's just such a display of pureness and innocence being corrupted and destroyed. It's a rather heartbreaking scene.
@@jimmykarlsson2567 , Indeed. Smeagol always had some mental or psychological problems. But he had a brother like friendship to his cousin Deagol. He would have never killed him without the rings evil influence. He loved his cousin.

Gar Tahk I’d do it ONLY if I could use all of its power. Controlling the most powerful people on Theo lanes directly, living immortal, and being worshipped as a god emperor by everyone? It’d be something most people would dream of. I just don’t know if it’d be worth it…
Peter Jackson did a great job at putting Saurons whispering voice in there. It’s like these two guys were friends or relatives but the ring was so powerful that suddenly none of that mattered, it’s so creepy that in real life as individuals, evil is so strong it can really warp us, even against people that we call our friends
I just realized. The real reason for Déagol’s death is because during the fight with Sméagol he absolutely refused to let go of the ring or have it be anywhere other than in the protection of his tightly closed fist. After losing the ring once and picking it back up, he tried to kill Sméagol first by strangling him with one hand whilst keeping the ring at his side. Sméagol, however had two free hands and was able to get out of his cousin’s chokehold only to put him in one. Whilst suffocating, Dèagol tried to fight back using again only one hand as he wouldn’t dare use the other for anything but to protect the ring from being taken from him ultimately leading to his asphyxiation and death.
at the same time he wasn't trying to fight back his cousin cause if deagol was holding on to the ring with one ring deagol was unable to fight back plus if he would had went straight for deagol while he was still on the ground he would had won the fight and strangled smeagol easily smeagol on the other hand won the fight cause he had 2 free hands to strangle him with plus if deagol would had never held on to the ring while he was being strangled he would had fight back but instead he refused to fight back his cousin smeagol was protecting his cousin to prevent deagol from a life of torture it was mostly likely a kill to save his cousin from a terrible path he was headed to
Actually in the books it was said that Sméagol was the stronger of the 2. So even if Déagol wasn’t holding the ring, Sméagol would’ve still been able to kill him.
if you think about it, if deagol had killed smeagol than he would have been corrupted by the ring and lived a lfe of torture and be just like the Gollum we know. so i guess He died in a better way than smeagol does
Mai Moss yep I agree at least he was still himself when he died and avoided the loneliness hundreds of years alone in the dark losing your mind the degradation self loathing possession of the ring id choose to go out the way deagol did for sure if those were the only two options. bettiepagebombshell he wasn’t ‘still himself’ if he was he’d have probably given it to his cousin but instead he went mad and tried to kill him to keep it
This scene definitely messed with me as a kid. I was about eight years old when this film came out (probably shouldn't have been watching it that young) and this scene in particular was the first instance where I realized that violence wasn't this heroic, clean, righteous thing. It was nasty, brutal, personal. Watching a family member viciously strangle his kin over such a small item with so much malice, with dirt on his fingers stuck with me. The shot lingers as Deagol struggles amid the muck and his life force fades away, and it taught me that this world isn't as orderly and safe as my childhood had been. Really powerful scene.
Man I watched this at an even younger age than that. I agree, this was the first example of a cold-blooded murder I ever saw (not counting the story of Cain and Abel)
I watched this movie when i was 5 years old. I was still in Kindergarten. Im from Guam which is a very small obscure island kinda similar to the shire in way. Ill never forget watching this scene. My friend tells me that he thought this scene could have been better/darker, but I told him unless u were there that opening night in 2003 you just wouldnt get it.

+Catherine Ann Well they dwelled by the Great River Anduin, not in the Shire, although they did descend from the same original hobbits. Maybe they did call their land a Shire of sorts, who knows (now you all know I have to look this up XP).
This makes you appreciate Frodo's resilience and strong will with the ring so much more. It only took Smeagol to see the ring to kill his cousin for it, he didn't even touch it, let alone carry it on his neck for so long. The ring is powerful for sure, but this scene is a very good indication that the ring bearer also is a contributing factor.
@@user-rf8pi7re1f To be fair, he was wearing it. It took a lot of time for him to get the way he was in Return of the King. They were both blessed by Gandalf, and by proxy, Eru, but the ring started to over power Frodo's blessing. And, let's give them credit, they were strong of character, too. But I think they were blessed to enhance it.
3:10 you can hear like hear deagols heartbeat about 2 times before smeagol had the full grip on his throat smeagol actually did a good thing to deagol he saved his cousin by strangling deagol to death so he wouldn't go through a life of torture
This is one of the most terrifying scenes ever! And it's that bass that does it. I love the imagery of Smeagol, the worm and the hook. It's a foreshadowing and dramatic irony, because we know that Smeagol ends up being the wiggling worm on the hook.
OldmansCC do you know if this is Andy Serkis actually playing The Hobbit Smeagol in this scene? I know Andy Serkis does the voiceover for Smeagol in the movie but I was wondering if that was actually him in this scene
I’ll never forget how cool it was, as a huge Tolkien geek, obviously knowing the plot and the characters, to be sitting in the theatre behind an adorable young couple, who were clearly experiencing “The Return of the King”, and probably “The Lord of the Rings,” in any form for the first time. When Deagol says “Sméagol, I got one” there was a moment of silence, and then the young lady goes, in a very whisper-quiet, no -disturbing way, “OMG that’s Gollum! Him, it’s Gollum before he was Gollum!” to which the husband excitingly exclaimed “no way...no way! Omg You are right, it’s him!” I was just happy for these people to experience that intriguing moment of realization, and the genius of both Tolkien and Jackson in that moment, and it’s silly but it made the moment so memorable for me...it helps me forget that I balled like a dumb giant baby at the “Grey Havens” scene...🙂
My fav theatre memory of RotK was I took my gf at the time with me to see it for my birthday. She had watched The Two Towers a couple nights previous and wanted to know the "She" Gollum was referring to was. Having read the books and already having seen the movie a couple weeks earlier on Xmas eve, I knew what was coming. I did not tell her. When Shelob was stalking Frodo she grabbed and squeezed my hand so hard because she was terrified of spiders. She then proceed to jump about 10 feet out for her seat when Shelob stung Frodo.
Me well at 3:07 when you look back it deagols eyes were already closed during that scene its almost like deagol was ready to fall asleep in the scene when you think about it carefully its almost like if smeagol was watching his cousin sleep during that scene
The scene encouraged you to forget about the ring as a weapon of war. Forget about it being used to change the world. Forget what it symbolises. This showed exactly what the ring was on a very personal and intimate level. See how calm and peaceful the scene starts out. Look at how gentle and innocent smeagol first appeares. It breaks your heart to see the wrath of the ring corrupt smeagol and utterly poison his heart.
1:45 genius movie scene. You can listeng how the birds start flying scared the moment he opens the hand. And this score.... Amazing. Really scary scene. Lotr deserves all.
saruman, in his search for the ring, had found various artefacts isuldur was wearing when he died (they were found in orthanc after saruman left), which means he'd have found the ring if deagol hadnt found it first
@@torksendal3020 Deagol was downright fortunate compared to Smeagol though, his life was like a torture scene where the torturer nurses his victim along so they never die and suffer forever.

+Elena R analyzing the scene; at first, they were both scrambling for the ring. Smeagol only attempts to kill his cousin after the latter tries to choke him. And, unfortunately, Smeagol seems to be physically stronger (of the two). Its quite hard to tell which one of them was the "good" one, ofc, with the ring being involved. ;(
in the end, both were just innocent victims of the ring's power. At the start they were just two relatives having fun, ring comes along and BAM,worst enemies =P.
To watch that escalation go from innocent, child-like mind full of wonder and curiosity in a naïve, isolated tribe to covetous, jealous, suspicious, paranoid, angry, furious, to primal murderous all in under 5 minutes. This scene was brilliantly thought out and disturbingly effective in representing just how evil the ring is.
3:10 you can hear saurons laugh in the choking scene too ok picture this in the movie when smeagol grabbed deagols throat in the movie and if deagol was to fall asleep right when the strangling scene was about to start you can see deagol sleeping in the middle of a strangling scene while smeagol has the bigger advantage to strangle deagol in his sleep during the strangling scene its just an idea
Tolkien is often criticized by fans of 'modern' fantasy for his archetypal characters and plots. This criticism misses the point. Tolkien never intended his characters and plots to be 'realistic', so to speak. He intended them to be representative of ideas. That's why this scene is so disturbing. Why are these people fighting to the death over an inanimate object? The object represents addiction, temptation, irrationality and evil. We immediately recognize the power of evil in this scene to distort people's wills and pervert them to the point where they don't know who they are anymore, and how fast it can happen.
All wars are fought for love of pleasure. Everyone wants more...the physical body is THE inanimate object that all evil stems from. I need more food more drink more cars more houses to house the temporary structure of earth that is my body. Without life breath the body is as useless as rotten tree stump.
There's also the fact that Tolkein's works revolutionized fantasy as we know it. Tolkein's characters may look archetypal now, but that's because we've seen them so much in works inspired by him. People often accuse things that created the cliche of BEING cliche when in reality they were incredibly original and groundbreaking.
valar the lord of the ring has lots of Christian symbolism, the ring represents sin and Frodo and his crew represent the struggle to rid ones self of sin
Bilbo - as you said, he had it for decades, used it frequently, and was still able to give it up of his own free will (with a little help). Sam - possessed it on the outskirts of Mordor itself. Granted, did not bear it very long, but still felt its temptation... and gave it up with minimal struggle. Frodo - endured its weight the longest, with a wound from a morgul blade, that harmed him both physically and mentally. Only succumbed to temptation in the very heart of Mordor and STILL didn't go into a murderous rage. Boromir - succumbed to temptation, BUT, managed to return to his senses. Faramir - take your pick (movies vs. novels); he either succumbed to temptation but returned to his senses, OR, was wise enough to renounce the Ring before it even had the chance to tempt him. IMO, either would suffice. Gandalf, Galadriel, Aragorn - resisted, resisted, resisted. And, on the other end of the scale... Isildur - in his own way, was seduced just as quickly as Deagol and Smeagol (aka Dumb and Dumber). Then again, he didn't murder Elrond or Cirdan to keep it, so... good job, Izzy, I guess?
@nooneinparticular Isildur actually came to his senses through the counsel of his eldest son Elendur (who alone of his brothers knew their dad had the Ring) to take the Ring to Elrond. The Ring also caused burning pain to Isildur. They were on their way to Rivendell when Orcs drawn by the Ring ambushed them.
Tom Bombadil also wore the Ring without turning invisible nor suffering desire and gave it back to Frodo willingly. He even could see Frodo while he wore it!
This genuinely is in my opinion one of the best fight scenes of the trilogy. Especially thanks to the music they have chosen for this scene you can basically feel the raw cruelty of the ring and how it makes two friends fight for life and death. This scene was so intense and thrilling that I immediately was tied up to the movie.
1:51 I love how Smeagol's voice sounds covered a bit by the music. It's like we are listening from Deagol's perspective, and he can hear the seductive music in his head
I never realized the foreshadowing of the hook in the worm before. All about how addiction twists you into something else, takes you over. Sean Astin said his portrayal of Sam with Frodo at Mt. Doom was inspired by someone watching a friend give in to addiction, and that last "Don't let go, Mr. Frodo" as he clearly wants to pitch himself in after the ring. Smeagol doesn't even feel the fire, his eyes are only for the ring. Opiates are horrible, god bless anyone who travels through that hell.
Yes that analogy the worm on the hook is basically the the bait being the ring and the fish being the person drawn in and caught and another thing which is crazy they were trying to catch a fish there was a struggle and the fish got away with the bait just like Sméagol and deagol struggle for the ring and Sméagol gets away with the ring
Originally they were going to play a Howard Shore musical piece over the part where Smeagol strangles Deagol. But when they reviewed the scene in editing, it didn't feel the Ring was influencing what was going on: it just felt like two guys trying to kill each other. So they removed the music and played up the heartbeat/sound effects instead to make it clear that it was the Ring that was doing this. The original music is still on the ROTK soundtrack and you might be able to find an alternate take of the scene on youtube.
@@jumnei5159 yeah deagol suffered a lot of pain by getting strangled to death with all the pressure smeagol put on deagol and smeagol got burnt alive in lava in the volcano in Mount doom
In my mind, one of the most poweful scenes in movie history. Expertly executed by the brilliant Andy Serkis. Watch him in other movies and you won't believe it is the same man. A big muscular man, and yet he plays little Gollum brilliantly.
This is probably the hardest scene to watch in the entire LOTR trilogy. The fact that they both so easily fell under the Ring's power and went from having fun to trying to kill each other in the space of a few seconds is just straight up terrifying.
I agree especially at 3:10 where smeagol has the full grip on deagol he grabbed deagol from around his neck to his throat so deagol wouldn't be to move his body while deagols eyes are closed in that scene deagol can see everything whats happening in the ring for a few seconds while smeagol is strangling him
hordnes Taqiyya (Shia) or Muda'rat (Sunni): tactical deceit for the purposes of spreading Islam. • Kitman: deceit by omission. • Tawriya: deceit by ambiguity. • Taysir: deceit through facilitation (not having to observe all the tenets of Sharia). • Darura: deceit through necessity (to engage in something "Haram" or forbidden). • Muruna: the temporary suspension of Sharia in order that Muslim immigrants appear "moderate".
In one of the early edits of this scene, there's a music track by Howard Shore that plays through the Smeagol-Deagol fight but when they reviewed it, they felt it overshadowed the effect that the Ring was having on them (i.e. it felt like two guys just fighting for no particular reason), so they removed the music and played up the Ring effect sounds instead, to make it clear that the Ring was doing this. The music track is still on the Return of the King CD.
+xXMakiManPRXx Nope. I have the extended DVD edition, which has a ton of behind the scenes clips (2 extra DVDs for each movie). There's also 4 commentary tracks for each movie in addition the the regular track (Director/Writer, Producer, Artist and Cast). It's pretty cool.
As someone else pointed out in the comments you can hear the birds flying away at 1:46 when the ring is revealed and it’s evil resurfaced. Btw would anyone know the name of the soundtrack
This is probably the scene that show's the ring's mind control and temptation the most. Two cousins who love each other and are otherwise normal are suddenly and inexplicably driven to murder to have the ring. I'd say that's a pretty powerful and dangerous ring. With the exception of the scene from Fellowship of the Ring where Bilbo momentarily attacks Frodo to get the ring back when he sees it in Rivendel, no other scene really shows off just how tempting and corrupting the rings of power really were.
The Oscars have no excuse for not nominating andy-serkis for best supporting actor, he has about 4 minutes of cgi-free screentime. Several actors have won with only 5-10 minutes.
Can we just appreciate for a second what a genius Andy Serkis is. He absolutely nails every role he is given. Look at Smeagol transform the very second he sees the rings. It ensnares him instantly. The acting is phenomenal.
The One Ring can change in size depending one which creatures has it in it's hands/palm. When Isildur picked up the Ring from Sauron, you can clearly see the One Ring shrinking and becoming the same size as Isildurs fingers. The One Ring is magical.
I always get chills when I watch this scene, because it starts off with Deagol and Smeagol acting so innocent and happy, but as soon as the Ring is found everything changes. I used to hate Gollum when I first watched the movies, since he deceived Frodo into betraying Sam, but looking back at it, Smeagol really was quite a tragic figure.
If you think about it, in a way he was protecting the ring from Sauron, since for five centuries he just kept the ring hidden under some soil away from everything.
Well to be fair, it was the ring's fault, not Sméagol's I felt sorry for him, poor thing, he was not always a Gollum, he was once a hobbit like Frodo and without meaning to, he killed his own brother and was betrayed by the ring so in a way, Smeagol was destroyed by the ring and lost all his identity of who he was once.

Howard Shore's mastery of soundtrack makes this utterly haunting. When Deagol first sees the ring, and then when he opens his hand... You know it's on. It's a lament for the agony this thing will cause, having been uncovered again. It's like they found a live grenade, but 10,000 times worse. These two Stoors never stood a chance. One of them was dead the second Deagol touched the ring.
i've always thought of what the ring dose to people as an allegory for what drugs do to people. I know tolkien didnt intend for that but i cant help but to make the relation. I took the LOTR book to rehab and it make me think that Smeagol was normal in the beginning but once he took the ring he sought seclusion and his mind and body deteriorated just as what happen when u take hard drugs. Just a thought.
It's supposed to represent pure evil that way Christianity describes it. Evil (and Satan) is beautiful to look at before the consequences start. Also evil often appears good in the beginning
@@SouthLondonForever it was actually a good thing if you noticed in the choking scene when deagols eyes are closed he is witnessing everything in the ring while smeagol is choking deagol
I always found it weird that Smeagol already has Gollum's voice and demeanor at this point. It makes his transformation less dramatic as he was already in Gollum mode.
If you not noticed 3:36 . When Smeagol takes the Ring from Deagol's hand Sauron speak on Black Speech: "Ash nazg durbatulûk, Ash nazg gimbatul" It's part of original: "Ash nazg durbatulûk, Ash nazg gimbatul, Ash nazg thrakatulûk, Agh burzum-ishi krimpatul" This words are engraved on the Ring and glowe in fire. On human speech they mean: "One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all And in the Darkness bind them." Such a crazy detail...
that was the point, lord of the rings has great moments of war,tragedy,friendship...and all mixed feelings, which is why i can't even compare the hobbit films to such a masterpiece as the lord of the rings, the hobbit movies are a bit too much like a fairytale, here its a story about trying to reach something againts all odds while losing alot of things over the course of events...

He seemed to have a sort of normal voice until he was like "give us that here, my love...." But I thought it was funny because the other guy just responded/reacted as if everything was normal as far as Smeagol's voice/pronouns. I'm like... did Smeagol dip in and out of talking like that ("us") all the time?
@@blackngoldcuttlefish3390that's what I had thought also. I thought the ring gave smeagol that gollum voice over the years he was corrupted by it but seeing this flashback and he talks with the exact same tone just threw me off lmao
After seeing this scene, I think both Smèagol and Dèagol were condemned: thet both saw the Ring and both were corrupted by it. I think if Dèagol managed to kill Smèagol, he would have been the one turning into Gollum
It’s so creepy how the tone of this scene starts off heartwarming and comforting seeing two innocent hobbits fishing. But then it becomes dark and suspenseful the moment Sméagol sees the ring and starts fighting with Deagol as he tries to take it, eventually killing him being consumed and driven by the ring’s power.
part of this scene was just how powerfull the ring's corruption is. Put the ring unto a dinner table of 2 kids,1 mother ,1 father and 2 elders for example, two minutes later = everyone kills each other until one gets the ring, becomes immortal and gets tormented their entire life like gollum was
Still a very disturbing scene. From the moment he gets up from the water he has exactly one minute and half left to live. Killed by his own brother, Sauron laughing when Deagols spirit leaves his body, birds escaping. The evil of the Ring unmasked.
The fact that the ring was left lying in the middle of the most pristine & peaceful haven is just pure literary genius on the part of Tolkien. Even in the most quiet and lovely places lies a potential seed of war. Corrupting the most ordinary of folk.

This scene was originally supposed to be a flashback in Two Towers, after Frodo calls Gollum by his old name in the Dead Marshes. Peter Jackson decided to make it the opening scene in Return of the King instead, which I think is brilliant for a number of reasons:
I thought it was a great idea too, putting this scene in the beginning of The return of the King.
I could imagine how that fight would gone good
Yeah but they decided to put at as a opening scene of the return of the king I guess it was a good idea to put it in the 3rd movie before it was going to be used as a flashback in the 2 towers

@@austinbevis4266 it did corrupt smeagol really fast plus smeagol had an easy advantage to cause deagol was holding to the ring with only one hand that's why he was unable to defend himself too if you look back at it carefully deagol wasn't even trying to fight back too

I always feel so bad for smeagol here. It started so nicely and the cousins seem to truly care about each other. It's just such a display of pureness and innocence being corrupted and destroyed. It's a rather heartbreaking scene.

@@adamroosendoorn Yo dude your comment had me loling.
Whilst suffocating, Dèagol tried to fight back using again only one hand as he wouldn’t dare use the other for anything but to protect the ring from being taken from him ultimately leading to his asphyxiation and death.
at the same time he wasn't trying to fight back his cousin cause if deagol was holding on to the ring with one ring deagol was unable to fight back plus if he would had went straight for deagol while he was still on the ground he would had won the fight and strangled smeagol easily smeagol on the other hand won the fight cause he had 2 free hands to strangle him with plus if deagol would had never held on to the ring while he was being strangled he would had fight back but instead he refused to fight back his cousin smeagol was protecting his cousin to prevent deagol from a life of torture it was mostly likely a kill to save his cousin from a terrible path he was headed to
Wow, never noticed that - thanks
Wow, that’s dark
Say what you see
Actually in the books it was said that Sméagol was the stronger of the 2. So even if Déagol wasn’t holding the ring, Sméagol would’ve still been able to kill him.
if you think about it, if deagol had killed smeagol than he would have been corrupted by the ring and lived a lfe of torture and be just like the Gollum we know. so i guess He died in a better way than smeagol does
Hazel Lovelock Yeah, he was painfully choked to death, which is better than falling into lava. This is not even a taunt. I meant it! You got a point.
Vega Jane Agreed, I’d rather get choked by my cousin than go on a road of torture, insanity, and eventually a lava pit.
Mai Moss yep I agree at least he was still himself when he died and avoided the loneliness hundreds of years alone in the dark losing your mind the degradation self loathing possession of the ring id choose to go out the way deagol did for sure if those were the only two options. I wonder did the fish that saw it if any did as it was buried try to kill each other lol I suppose animals are too pure and instinctual to be taken in by it people think we have these higher abilities it’s odd though how it’s easier to hypnotize intelligent people the mind plays tricks on itself that’s why you are the best liar to yourself w rationalization and justification etc sorry for going off on a tangent there lol
bettiepagebombshell he wasn’t ‘still himself’ if he was he’d have probably given it to his cousin but instead he went mad and tried to kill him to keep it
Gollum seemed to be happy when he was with the ring
"Happy birthday smeagol! What do ya wanna do today?"
"Let's go fishing."
And thus was the sealer of their fate.

Frodo falls in love with the ring. He sees the journey as a way to continue holding the ring. The only one who wasn't corrupted by it was Sam

Omg You are right, it’s him!”
I was just happy for these people to experience that intriguing moment of realization, and the genius of both Tolkien and Jackson in that moment, and it’s silly but it made the moment so memorable for me...it helps me forget that I balled like a dumb giant baby at the “Grey Havens” scene...🙂

This scene made me tear up. It seemed like such a wonderful day, then Smeagol kills his cousin. On his BIRTHDAY!!! :'c
No, Deagol was the bigger guy between him and Smeagol. It's just that when you have your hands on someone's throat they start to panic.
I don't think it was his birthday, I think he was trying to come up with whatever excuse to obtain the ring
it was Smeagol's birthday, that's why he sometimes call the Ring as "birthday's gift"
To watch that escalation go from innocent, child-like mind full of wonder and curiosity in a naïve, isolated tribe to covetous, jealous, suspicious, paranoid, angry, furious, to primal murderous all in under 5 minutes.
Money?
All wars are fought for love of pleasure. Everyone wants more...the physical body is THE inanimate object that all evil stems from. I need more food more drink more cars more houses to house the temporary structure of earth that is my body. Without life breath the body is as useless as rotten tree stump.
There's also the fact that Tolkein's works revolutionized fantasy as we know it. Tolkein's characters may look archetypal now, but that's because we've seen them so much in works inspired by him. People often accuse things that created the cliche of BEING cliche when in reality they were incredibly original and groundbreaking.
valar the lord of the ring has lots of Christian symbolism, the ring represents sin and Frodo and his crew represent the struggle to rid ones self of sin
another missed point: most of these characters weren't archetypes before Tolkien had written them.
He takes one look at it and he is immediately addicted to it, while Bilbo has it for decades and is still able to give it up willingly.

Andy serkis is such a great actor. Still give me goosebumps everytime I see his transformation because of the ring. What a great scene
Same here.
1:51 I love how Smeagol's voice sounds covered a bit by the music. It's like we are listening from Deagol's perspective, and he can hear the seductive music in his head
Yes.
The Music is super creepy!

@@nawabirshad5976 it is start of Amon Hen ruclips.net/video/y0KyhRkgThc/видео.html
I SERIOUSLY WANNA ERASE MY MEMORY RIGHT HERE AND WATCH ALL THESE MOVIES AGAIN!!!! SO GOOD!!!!!!!!!!
Also when Boromir attack Frodo
@@twinkthatloveslotrtrilogy7676 yeah but then later on boromir dies by arrows but boromir did attack frodo but he didn't mean to attack frodo
and that my children is why we dont do drugs
mad rex wait what?
You dont do drugs because of TLOTR?? What?ha?
That makes no sense whatsoever. 😂
yeah we do alcohol and cigarettes instead even though they cause the most harm but hey, they're glorified by society so its fine.
They do shrooms, smoke pipe and drink mead in this universe. Change your comment to "and that my children is why we don't do rings"
The Oscars have no excuse for not nominating andy-serkis for best supporting actor, he has about 4 minutes of cgi-free screentime. Several actors have won with only 5-10 minutes.
Such a sad scene.
shows how much the ring corrupts its user
not at all, this scene is perfect in showing how badly the ring can corrupt the user and it is the background of gollum
@@TheMvpmovies it is, Gollum is quite tragic really
I'm fairly disturbed.
VentMagic102 I was seriously disturbed when I saw this shit at age 8.
+Melvin “Mithrog” Slog OMG!! I was 8 too when I first saw it!!! This was the first movie I saw in a theater :D
+Melvin “Mithrog” Slog I was when i saw hellraiser when i was 10, but it opened my mind to the beauty of suffering.
it looks like Deagol is sleeping when he is being strangled when smeagol strangles to deagol to the ground if you pause the video just to be nice
Fat hobbitses!
“We’ll takes it when their dead” ten years later just took on a whole new meaning.
@@eleanorhogan8643 it was more likely a kill to save his cousin right away deagol was more corrupted than smeagol was deagol went for the choke 1st if you think about it carefully smeagol saved deagol from a terrible fate that was going to happen to deagol a life a torture so smeagol saved his cousin by killing him so he wouldn't have to go through the same fate as smeagol did
@@eliassanchez1112 Well really it was the ring not them, Smeagol was an unfortunate character and went bad.
@@eleanorhogan8643 yeah it was smeagol was protecting his cousin so deagol wouldn't go through a life of torture and pain
They should really give Andy an Oscar!
I think he won a lot of awards for his role probably
You can literally see the exact moment his whole life changes forever.
2:01
Ring. Not even once.
Nerd Face lol. a drug.
Me when I see my brother with the remote: *GIVE US THAT DEAGOL MY LOVE.*
Thank u cause I was tryna figure out what the hell he said at that part🥳😂😂
When you're in the playground with a friend as kids and one of of you finds a coin.
i've always thought of what the ring dose to people as an allegory for what drugs do to people. I know tolkien didnt intend for that but i cant help but to make the relation. I took the LOTR book to rehab and it make me think that Smeagol was normal in the beginning but once he took the ring he sought seclusion and his mind and body deteriorated just as what happen when u take hard drugs. Just a thought.
same... and at the end how anyone that touched the ring in some way still suffers...
It's supposed to represent pure evil that way Christianity describes it. Evil (and Satan) is beautiful to look at before the consequences start. Also evil often appears good in the beginning
Sadreli M the ring is like a drug that no matter what help you try to get or get you can never stop

Deagols family was so upset that they created and named the deadliest handgun known to man and hobbit after him.
3:30, sauron laughing is easily the scariest thing in this whole trilogy
3:10 you can also hear his laugh in the choking scene
Jesus
Oh my god it is!!! I always thought it was Deagol's breath leaving his body, but good god that laughing is creepy
@@SouthLondonForever it was actually a good thing if you noticed in the choking scene when deagols eyes are closed he is witnessing everything in the ring while smeagol is choking deagol
I always found it weird that Smeagol already has Gollum's voice and demeanor at this point. It makes his transformation less dramatic as he was already in Gollum mode.
whats not to say that Smeagol was a whacked out weirdo in the first place? He was a bit of blacksheep to begin with.
@@Rao665 He was pampered by his rich grandmother, or something along those lines, so I guess he turned out funny.
Man was just weird before
His voice changed once he saw the ring
Andy said Sméagol had allergies lol and the Ring draws out the worst parts of a person, it doesn't change them entirely
this scene is dark af
If you not noticed 3:36 . When Smeagol takes the Ring from Deagol's hand Sauron speak on Black Speech:
"Ash nazg durbatulûk,
Ash nazg gimbatul"
It's part of original:
"Ash nazg durbatulûk,
Ash nazg gimbatul,
Ash nazg thrakatulûk,
Agh burzum-ishi krimpatul"
This words are engraved on the Ring and glowe in fire. On human speech they mean:
"One Ring to rule them all,
One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all
And in the Darkness bind them."
Such a crazy detail...
2:33 when youre both sharing a gram of coke and there's only 1 line left xD
What did we learn people? Never try to suffocate someone with one hand... It will backfire.
Sean Harris I know I am 4 years late but have you heard of Darth Vader?
You got me there...
@Mr.Fortnite Can you please tell me about your DP??
I remember the theater being so silent and everyone, including myself, being very uncomfortable during this opening.
This scene freaked me out so badly as a kid. The soundtrack is just so disturbing
that was the point, lord of the rings has great moments of war,tragedy,friendship...and all mixed feelings, which is why i can't even compare the hobbit films to such a masterpiece as the lord of the rings, the hobbit movies are a bit too much like a fairytale, here its a story about trying to reach something againts all odds while losing alot of things over the course of events...
I love how his voice changes from Smeagol's voice into Gollum's when he saw the ring. "Give us that, Deagol my love."
The definition of "that escalated quickly"
i always crack the fuck up when i see this because smeagol has that rasp in his voice as gollum. they could've at least changed it a little bit, imagine talking to someone who talks exactly like that lmao
That is the very man who voices and green-screens smeagols movements later on
i know that but i was saying imagine coming across a regular human being who speaks like that
kolisionn it actually sounds like some English country accents.
I like how Smeagol face is really happy when seeing Deagol is okay... Until he sees the ring of course.
2:04 - Just one glance. That’s all it took.
After seeing this scene, I think both Smèagol and Dèagol were condemned: thet both saw the Ring and both were corrupted by it. I think if Dèagol managed to kill Smèagol, he would have been the one turning into Gollum
Definitely. You could see that by the way Deagol was staring at the ring. Plus he also tried to choke Smeagol
The heartbeats, drums and creepy music while Smeagol kills Deagol was awesome and scary at the same time
This part is really sad cause it's like at first they were brothers but than the ring caused them to kill each other
part of this scene was just how powerfull the ring's corruption is. Put the ring unto a dinner table of 2 kids,1 mother ,1 father and 2 elders for example, two minutes later = everyone kills each other until one gets the ring, becomes immortal and gets tormented their entire life like gollum was

This is disturbingly amazing. The acting, the story and the circumstances is just complete heaven to hell. Beautifully done.
Superb acting by Andy Serkis. You can see the precise moment (2:00 to 2:09) the Ring takes Smeagol and Gollum is born.
1:46 hes more excited because he thinks he discovered a new kind of fish poo
lol
You can hear the birds flying away. As if they were scared of the evil presence approaching
Still a very disturbing scene. From the moment he gets up from the water he has exactly one minute and half left to live. Killed by his own brother, Sauron laughing when Deagols spirit leaves his body, birds escaping.
The evil of the Ring unmasked.
I love how spearing the worm just absolutely delights Sméagol
Crazy to see deagal actually found the ring first. Most realistic way of showing the rings true power over someone
one of the best scenes in the movie; the music makes the scene so chilling.
One of my favorite scenes in cinema.
