Looks great! I have a crestie and your vivarium is making me jealous! For the isopods though, those are definitely not dairy cows. Porcellio Laevis have wider bodies and the black/white is a lot more vibrant. I'm seeing a little blue in there as well which is not normal. As a breeder, the only colors I see are black and white and very rarely do you get ones with only one color, but it is always just white and never only black. Could be oreo crumbles and they might have crossbred with powder blues to make that blue tint. Cool thing is that if those are oreos, they will crossbreed with your oranges and make a cool orange/white combo. Love the setup though! Keep up the good work!
Edit: I saw your isopod breeding setup video and your youtube short where u fed isopods raw meat. In those two videos, the dairy cows seemed like genuine ones, but I'm not so sure about the ones in this video. Loving your videos by the way!
Thank you so much! And I really appreciate the insight. I’d like to up my isopod knowledge. I’ve treated them as clean up crew for so long but I’m starting to appreciate them more as pets.
I recently built my first vivarium, for a crested gecko. I can't keep my begonia rex alive. I got a substrate kit from NEherp. The substrate is similar to an abg mix. I think the plant isn't getting enough water, since the soil drain so well. I also need another tall plant for the right side. I ordered a black velvet alocasia from joshs frogs l, but it's a small three leafer, with the leaves at ground level. I chafe at getting another plant I don't actually like simply due to functionality, but I think I'm gonna go with an umbrella plant. Maybe in the spring, when the Lowes has a better plant selection I can replace it with something desirable.
I sense that you digest a good amount of "ididathing". This is not an insult. I discovered you earlier through your dwarf frogs video and have been on a binge for an hour or so, great work.
Could you do a video talking about gargoyle geckos and like how good of a pet for beginners etc?? I really like how they look but idk how easy they are to take care of.
Looks nice, but you should really not go smaller for one animal than 36×36×18 exo terra with the small new caledonean geckos like gargoyle, cresteds or chahouas.
Do you have any videos or recommendations of handling mold in a crested gecko bioactive enclosure I just never had a mold problem with my bioactive set ups for reptiles and I’m not sure what to do. some people say it’s bad because it can cause respiratory issues and to redo the whole cage some people say that it’s good and safe and won’t harm gecko if anything mold shows a successful set up. However, I wanna know if any of the stuff I’m researching is true and what to do next. The isopods and springtails are not eating it. the mold a group of these small little white dots They’re deep in the substrate And I only see it on the sides of the glass not even the top of the soil towards back corner of the enclosure and the mold is even on my a small amount of my hydro balls in the drainage layer I scooped some out airated the soil a bit since soil felt compacted and my crestie is in a little quarantine setup for the time being

Awesome! I recently made a viv and I also coated the background with the bio dude substrate. How does it hold up now? To me it feels like it comes off the background a bit too easily, and I’m worried it’ll scrape off over time when I put my gecko in
thank you! I've noticed on areas where I didn't scrape the shiny bits away that well and areas where he spends a lot of time are definitely starting to wear away. I prefer black foam because it's much less noticeable, but if you're worried about ingestion, at this stage, you may be able to put a coat of Drylok. If you vary the tones a bit, you can get a nice natural look
I have a bio active vivarium and I have mold growing in the soil and drainage layer and I can’t get rid of it, I know I need to make a new enclosure for it, do you know any tips to prevent mold?
yea for sure, but it sort of depends on what species, but heres some general advice. You can bake your wood and substrate prior to adding to kill spores. 250F for 3 hours. Springtails and isopods are also crucial for bioactive if you aren't already adding them. You can also increase ventilation a bit (screen tops and sides) and use small fans to get the air moving around it. Just be careful if this is for a dart frog or other high humidity species that shouldn't be dried out. Cut back on soaking the enclosure everyday when you first build it as well. Let it mature and build up the amount of water going in
Gargoyles live much lower in the trees than crested geckos which I find neat. I give Fuji height but I usually find him sleeping in the leaf litter under that pot

Did you add expanding foam when the silicone was dry?
yes. Its better than way. The foam just needs something textured to grab onto

How wet do you keep the substrate with those plants?
