Unfortunetly, even with vets with decades of experience it can be a huge tossup with animals and anesthesia. The smaller the animal the more risk of sudden death even if everything is done right. So sorry that happened to you.
All three of my gargoyle geckos passed away for unknown reasons. I've kept reptiles for 17 years, did heaps of research on the species, got their enclosures approved by breeders. They were all from different places. But even the reputable breeder I got the 3rd from never figured out how they died. I gave up on gargoyle geckos after that..

Anaesthesia is so rough on smaller animals. Even puppies and kittens. It’s why a lot of people don’t get their rodents, rabbits, hedgehogs, etc spayed/neutered. I’m so sorry for your loss. Losing an animal is so hard :(

This is so sad. I saw one of your egg shorts that mentioned his passing and came all the way back through your shorts and then videos to find out what happened. I actually assumed Toes killed him like spiders will sometimes do.. This broken peepee situation is somehow better and worse at the same time. I know I’m just one of what will be hundreds commenting, but I am sending my condolences nonetheless. From a gecko owners perspective, you did everything correctly and I commend you for the high level of care and research you put into your animals. Your love for your animals shows in not only your own research, knowledge and the execution of those things, but also in your desire to educate others. I hope that you continue this journey to fulfilling your childhood dreams despite this!
Man, that’s super awful. I’m so sorry that happened to you and that poor precious little guy. It’s rare, but sometimes the anesthetic does kill the animal.
Yep. Even with humans there can be complications with anesthesia. It’s such a complex mix of medicines to put an animal or human under with so many outside factors determining the dosage that even the smallest error can be fatal. It’s so sad when that’s the thing that leads to death.😢
That’s what I was scared of happening to my dog when she had surgery a day ago. She is alive and well now but when she sleeps she is sometimes left breathless and jolts awake. Never happened before, she is only 8 months old. Does it have something to do with the anesthesia they gave her?

My condolences. Complete stranger to your channel but a big exotics and veterinary nerd here. This was definitely a freak accident and not at all your fault. For one, prolapses just happen. Sometimes they’re easy to fix like what your gecko’s breeder had happen, and sometimes they are life threatening ordeals and there’s not much you can do to prevent or predict it in breeding. With the vet visit, unfortunately little guys of any species and anesthesia do not mix well. It’s very easy for it to go wrong like it did for you and takes a skilled anesthesiologist with experience in the species you’re bringing in for the least risk but it’s always there. Not only their size but the unique anatomy of reptiles that make it so difficult and risky. Don’t beat yourself up about it too much, hope you get those eggs from Toes!

Im so sorry for your loss man… I remember the freeze I had to leave my house and leave all my fish, there was no power and a night later my parents said they all died. I was devistated and It was horrible. I’m so sorry you lost Fuji but his legacy (and maybe children) will live on.
I didn’t know Fuji or this channel until today but I can already see how much love you have for your animals and how much you care for them and Fuji in particular. A year later and we all still love and miss Fuji. Watching this it at least helps to know that there are a bunch of beautiful, happy and healthy little Fuji and Toes babies running around. You will always live on little man 💜.

As someone who's lost plenty of reptiles over the years, let me say that this is by far the hardest part of keeping exotic pets. Especially when it comes to breeding them, there's a lot that can go wrong very quickly. I had two little banded geckos living in a 40 gallon, one male one female. They got along fine for months, and had plenty of space and food. When breeding season came around though, the male got frisky, and the female retaliated. The poor male ended up with a broken spine and died a day before I could get him into the vet. This is one of the reasons I've decided that, while I love keeping reptiles, I probably won't be trying to breed any in the near future. I'm so sorry for your loss, but know that you did everything you could to not only save him in his final moments, but provide him a happy and healthy life in the time he was with you.
I had a Florida kingsnake that had an abscess on his face and he had to be operated on. I was a mess but luckily he pulled through because I was told reptiles are not good with anaesthetics. I lost him 11 years later to cancer and I was devastated. I had him for 15 years and was so attached to him. He was the first (and best) snake I had. It hurts so much losing a beloved pet. I was in tears watching your video. I am so so sorry you and Fiji had to go through this.

Really sorry to hear this bro. A few years back in 2018 I had a crested gecko who I had for about 8 years. He started having some health issues and I took him to the vet, they gave him a calcium shot or something… but anyway his little body didn’t react well to the shot and he basically died of shock the night we brought him home. I think the lesson to be learned at the end of the day, is often time these little animals are fragile and not designed for our certain forms of treatment.
When I saw Fuji. When you showed him blurred. I started crying. So badly. Im so sorry about Fuji, he was a big part of your life, and I hope that you make it out of this, I know how this feels so I am so sorry, if you need to talk im here.
Sorry for your loss. Even if this is a year later, I get that feeling of worry and stress. My cat is asthmatic and she had to go under for three major tests, a bone marrow aspirate, CT scan, and a BAL. They were worried that her lungs may not reinflate post procedure, but luckily she bounced back like a mother fucker and came home with me 6 hours after her procedures. Shit is scary, you cant help but worry and assume the worse. We are lucky to have pets. While they may not be our whole world, they make our world whole
Oh my heart breaks for you! I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your friend and pet. As awful as it was to loose your buddy under anesthetic.... this was probably the best way for him pass on, why?. He didn't die in agony. Because of your quick thinking, you got him to see a doctor and got him the relief he needed, he passed on without pain and discomfort. If you hadn't of intervened he would have slowly and painfully died. You gave him the ability to escape the pain. He got to live a life loved by you and when in trouble, you came to his rescue. I lost a desert tortoise last year that i had for 15 years due to complications from compaction. I live in a small town area and nobody has real experience with reptiles. The one "exotic" vet in my area i took him to really had no idea what they were doing. I took him in SIX times and he died a horrible death. It haunts me still. I still miss him, reptiles can be so complex and hard to treat. It was DEVASTATING for me and i always think of what i could have done different. Its so important to learn all you can from these experiences so that its much less likely to be repeated and to keep learning and researching the animals under our care. Not only was my vet clueless, i had no idea about compaction either. Im so sorry JJ. I miss you every single day.
This is my first intro to your page. My fiancé is a big reptile enthusiast, and we just lost one of our scaly noodles. Watching him hurt hurt my heart. Oh man, this video made me cry. I cannot imagine how hard (and probably expensive) it was to lose him like that. Gargoyle geckos are so cool. They are one of my dream geckos for sure. I actually started to tear up, I am so sorry this happened to Fuji. I'm new to watching your videos and I love how much you care for these beautiful babies. I wish I had more time and space, I would rescue some as well. We have tons of green anoles and blue tailed skinks out here and I try to watch out for them, move them to a nice plant to hide. I have an outdoor terrarium/planter with a cover for my plants and it is nice and humid in there, I let the lizards chill there and bring them bugs. thank you for sharing and doing all that you do!

@@somethingsomething404 Hemipene prolapses are not genetic. They usually aren't fatal, and this one wouldn't have been if Fuji had survived the anesthesia. Some causes can include impaction, excess strain, mating, improper sexing, or a lack of humidity. Usually it can be fixed by keeping the lizard in a sterile environment and using lubricants or certain solutions to make the hemipene easier to slip back in, and slowly pushing it back into the body. It's advised to always contact a vet for advice on how to fix it first. Unfortunately it seems like too much of the anesthetic was given to the lizard which caused his heart to stop.
Seeing this now, I’m so sorry for your loss. I hope you’re doing better and I hope you’re okay. Fuji was one of my faves. I know you loved him. R.I.P Fuji, you’re doing well in gecko heaven. ❤️

So sorry this happened. I had a kitten who passed from an engorged pubic area too so this really hit home. We brought him to the vet asap but they couldn't find out what was wrong with him before he died. Anyway I saw your Fuji from a youtube short and wanted to know more about this cute chunky boi, unfortunately it turns out he was already gone. I know how nervewracking it is to have that call from the vet, and then the blow of having the bad news being delivered. Wishing you love and hoping that his last moments were peaceful. Thank you for taking care of him, and thank him for bringing a smile to my face.

I bought my 11 yo some kind of reptile I'm not sure but we invested so much into that little guy bc of this channel apparently we got one with some kind of mutation and it wasn't goin to live long we gave him the best life we could bc of u...so know he lives on thru all of us that you've touched in some kina way

Im sorry you lost your lil dude. As a person who works in veterinary surgery, anesthetic is really touchy on reptiles in general, nevermind tiny ones. Their metabolism and biology is so wildly different than a mammals, and there just isnt as much knowledge about various reptile species response to anesthetic, or even individual variation within a species, so its *always* much more risky, even for a relatively minor surgery like fixing a prolapsed hemipene. Im sorry this happened. Losing a pet to anesthetic when a surgery was successful is the worst thing I can think of. At least the little guy was able to fertilize some eggs, and his kids live on!
Hun, I asm so sorry this happened. Im so sorry... I juat learned about this while re-searching before i breed my cresties. You have spray down the breeding box an abnormal amount to keep it very damp. I know another breeder who lost his male crestie the same way.

I can't relate, but I know the feeling of the guilt after a living dies.. and how helpless we can feel because it's not ourselves.. and then we think 'i could have done it better' and so on, i am really sorry that you had to experience this.. after decades of dreaming to breed. You made so much effort and was excited but it was unfortune. At the start of the video, i thought it would be some kind of disease, but this was just unfortunate. It's not your fault. Honestly he did everything right. Hemipenes are very common. They aren't fatal, and that's not what killed Fuji. Fuji died because he was accidentally given too much of the anesthetic which is a very high probability for small animals. When that happens, it slows down their heart to the point of stopping it. It's a small yet detrimental mistake that even professionals who've been doing it for years can make.

Poor Fuji, I'm so sorry. I lost my gecko Maurice during surgery earlier in the month.. she went in to have her ovaries removed due to follicular stasis, unfortunately when they opened her up they found a tumour constricting part of her gut.. totally inoperable 😔 I had to make the decision not to wake her back up. I hope both babies hatch and do well ❤

Heartbreaking. Im so sorry. It can happen so easily. I had to get surgery for my female beardie who had follicular stasis and i was so scared she wouldnt wake up, reptiles are always higher risk.. but thankfully she did. Im so sorry about Fuji, he was beautiful. It can happen to any pet for anything. You took such great care of him.

Yeah, this is how my brother's dog went. He went in for a surgery to patch up a skin wound on top of his head and never woke up.

It’s very easy for it to go wrong like it did for you and takes a skilled anesthesiologist with experience in the species you’re bringing in for the least risk but it’s always there. Not only their size but the unique anatomy of reptiles that make it so difficult and risky.
Don’t beat yourself up about it too much, hope you get those eggs from Toes!

Im so sorry for your loss man… I remember the freeze I had to leave my house and leave all my fish, there was no power and a night later my parents said they all died. I was devistated and It was horrible. I’m so sorry you lost Fuji but his legacy (and maybe children) will live on.

As someone who's lost plenty of reptiles over the years, let me say that this is by far the hardest part of keeping exotic pets. Especially when it comes to breeding them, there's a lot that can go wrong very quickly. I had two little banded geckos living in a 40 gallon, one male one female. They got along fine for months, and had plenty of space and food. When breeding season came around though, the male got frisky, and the female retaliated. The poor male ended up with a broken spine and died a day before I could get him into the vet. This is one of the reasons I've decided that, while I love keeping reptiles, I probably won't be trying to breed any in the near future.
I'm so sorry for your loss, but know that you did everything you could to not only save him in his final moments, but provide him a happy and healthy life in the time he was with you.
I had a Florida kingsnake that had an abscess on his face and he had to be operated on. I was a mess but luckily he pulled through because I was told reptiles are not good with anaesthetics. I lost him 11 years later to cancer and I was devastated. I had him for 15 years and was so attached to him. He was the first (and best) snake I had. It hurts so much losing a beloved pet. I was in tears watching your video. I am so so sorry you and Fiji had to go through this.

Really sorry to hear this bro. A few years back in 2018 I had a crested gecko who I had for about 8 years. He started having some health issues and I took him to the vet, they gave him a calcium shot or something… but anyway his little body didn’t react well to the shot and he basically died of shock the night we brought him home. I think the lesson to be learned at the end of the day, is often time these little animals are fragile and not designed for our certain forms of treatment.

Sorry for your loss. Even if this is a year later, I get that feeling of worry and stress. My cat is asthmatic and she had to go under for three major tests, a bone marrow aspirate, CT scan, and a BAL. They were worried that her lungs may not reinflate post procedure, but luckily she bounced back like a mother fucker and came home with me 6 hours after her procedures. Shit is scary, you cant help but worry and assume the worse. We are lucky to have pets. While they may not be our whole world, they make our world whole

Because of your quick thinking, you got him to see a doctor and got him the relief he needed, he passed on without pain and discomfort. If you hadn't of intervened he would have slowly and painfully died. You gave him the ability to escape the pain. He got to live a life loved by you and when in trouble, you came to his rescue. Despite his life coming to an end, you gave him so much more than you could ever know.. sending condolences from NZ ♡
I lost a desert tortoise last year that i had for 15 years due to complications from compaction.
I live in a small town area and nobody has real experience with reptiles. The one "exotic" vet in my area i took him to really had no idea what they were doing.
I took him in SIX times and he died a horrible death.
It haunts me still. I still miss him, reptiles can be so complex and hard to treat.
It was DEVASTATING for me and i always think of what i could have done different. Its so important to learn all you can from these experiences so that its much less likely to be repeated and to keep learning and researching the animals under our care. Not only was my vet clueless, i had no idea about compaction either.

Oh man, this video made me cry. I cannot imagine how hard (and probably expensive) it was to lose him like that. Gargoyle geckos are so cool. They are one of my dream geckos for sure. I hope you got some fertile eggs at least out of this tragedy and can at least have a part of him in your life again. I'm going to go check your other videos to see if you got lucky. I have always wanted to breed exotic animals since childhood too (I'm 36 now.) I just picked up 3 mourning geckos and I cannot wait until they start laying. I've tried pairing my corn snakes with no luck, so I figure mourning geckos are fool proof as far as breeding goes lol!

I actually started to tear up, I am so sorry this happened to Fuji. I'm new to watching your videos and I love how much you care for these beautiful babies. I wish I had more time and space, I would rescue some as well. We have tons of green anoles and blue tailed skinks out here and I try to watch out for them, move them to a nice plant to hide. I have an outdoor terrarium/planter with a cover for my plants and it is nice and humid in there, I let the lizards chill there and bring them bugs. thank you for sharing and doing all that you do!

@@somethingsomething404 Hemipene prolapses are not genetic. They usually aren't fatal, and this one wouldn't have been if Fuji had survived the anesthesia. Some causes can include impaction, excess strain, mating, improper sexing, or a lack of humidity. Usually it can be fixed by keeping the lizard in a sterile environment and using lubricants or certain solutions to make the hemipene easier to slip back in, and slowly pushing it back into the body. It's advised to always contact a vet for advice on how to fix it first. Unfortunately it seems like too much of the anesthetic was given to the lizard which caused his heart to stop.

So sorry this happened. I had a kitten who passed from an engorged pubic area too so this really hit home. We brought him to the vet asap but they couldn't find out what was wrong with him before he died. Anyway I saw your Fuji from a youtube short and wanted to know more about this cute chunky boi, unfortunately it turns out he was already gone. I know how nervewracking it is to have that call from the vet, and then the blow of having the bad news being delivered. Wishing you love and hoping that his last moments were peaceful. Thank you for taking care of him, and thank him for bringing a smile to my face.

This video really hit me hard. I have never owned a gecko, but I i can empathize with doing absolutely everything you can to save a beloved pet, and ultimately losing them. You take great care of all of your animals. Try to be proud of the fact that you did all you could, and you gave Fuji an amazing life.

Im sorry you lost your lil dude. As a person who works in veterinary surgery, anesthetic is really touchy on reptiles in general, nevermind tiny ones. Their metabolism and biology is so wildly different than a mammals, and there just isnt as much knowledge about various reptile species response to anesthetic, or even individual variation within a species, so its *always* much more risky, even for a relatively minor surgery like fixing a prolapsed hemipene.
Im sorry this happened. Losing a pet to anesthetic when a surgery was successful is the worst thing I can think of.
At least the little guy was able to fertilize some eggs, and his kids live on!
Hun, I asm so sorry this happened. Im so sorry... I juat learned about this while re-searching before i breed my cresties. You have spray down the breeding box an abnormal amount to keep it very damp. I know another breeder who lost his male crestie the same way.

It's hard to explain the pain and guilt and anger you feel when you lose such a friend. I think I cried more over the loss of my gecko than I ever did in public before. The pain never goes away. It just comes up less and less, man. My condolences.

I can't relate, but I know the feeling of the guilt after a living dies.. and how helpless we can feel because it's not ourselves.. and then we think 'i could have done it better' and so on, i am really sorry that you had to experience this.. after decades of dreaming to breed. You made so much effort and was excited but it was unfortune. At the start of the video, i thought it would be some kind of disease, but this was just unfortunate. It's not your fault. Ofc you could have done it better but only when we had the superpower to predict the future. Keep up
Honestly he did everything right. Hemipenes are very common. They aren't fatal, and that's not what killed Fuji. Fuji died because he was accidentally given too much of the anesthetic which is a very high probability for small animals. When that happens, it slows down their heart to the point of stopping it. It's a small yet detrimental mistake that even professionals who've been doing it for years can make.

Poor Fuji, I'm so sorry. I lost my gecko Maurice during surgery earlier in the month.. she went in to have her ovaries removed due to follicular stasis, unfortunately when they opened her up they found a tumour constricting part of her gut.. totally inoperable 😔 I had to make the decision not to wake her back up.

Heartbreaking. Im so sorry. It can happen so easily. I had to get surgery for my female beardie who had follicular stasis and i was so scared she wouldnt wake up, reptiles are always higher risk.. but thankfully she did.

I’ve been there, it’s heartbreaking and it’s clear how much you loved him and continue to love him. So happy he’s a daddy! Anaesthetic can just do this, even with larger animals like dogs and cats. Animals like lizards and hamsters are crazy common for dying this way.
