    Ever notice how the quality of the construction Famicom is so much cheaper than the NES? Thank W. Edwards Deming for influencing Japan to have higher QC for exports.

      I never had a NES. I originally had a Famiclone and thought it was crappy and the cartridge plastics cheap and nasty. When I eventually got a real famicom I discovered the genuine article was only marginally better 😂

    If I recall that correctly the way to tell whether you have the soldered powered unit version or the one with 2 separate boards is whether there is an FF logo on the front of the unit (to the left of the Family Computer text). The FF version will be single board.

    What do you think about starting metal screws in plastic threads by turning them back until the click to line up the threads? I find that starting them anywhere could cut a new thread which might break through to the existing one.

      Seems like you have sort of a sloppy style, still it's not like it's things that matter. Like I wouldn't feel any sort of way using stuff you worked on, but OCD wise, I would probably tidy up some details if I was in there anyway, just to be sure it looks good from the underside of the PCB inside the case :P Like you have such a nice iron compared to mine, so I wouldn't bother even unscrewing a single screw to like mess with it

    I'm considering buying Your Power/AV mod board, but i have a few questions. What power regulator are You using? I assume it's a STMicoelectronics l78xx kind? What's the size of the barrel plug you need for Your mod? 5.5/2.1mm? How much is Your mod influenced by switching power supply noise? Is it worth it to get a good 9V powersupply or will there be no noticeable difference if it's a more budget kind? Is was planning to use a Mean Well GSM18E09-P1J, which is probably a bit overkill, being meant for medical equipment, heh ^^; Thanks! ^_^

    • @Asriazh
      @Asriazh 3 года назад +1

      Saw on the RetroRGB blog, that You do use a l7805cv voltage regulator, which is nice, since the old original voltage regulator that was inside the famicom/NES usually just had a ripple rejection of 60dB, where the l7805 has 68dB. I guess Your mod uses a 5.5/2.1 barrel plug, but i'll simply get a powersupply with interchangeable plugs that costs more than 10 bucks, hoping for the best :p

    • @backofficeshow

    • @Asriazh
      @Asriazh 3 года назад

      @@backofficeshow Those AV leads are easy enough to source from somewhere. Bought! It even had a Famicom Disk adapter... without the disk reader unit itself, heh ^^; Let's see ^_^

    Hey there! I heard you had some perfectly good RF modulator assemblies! Any chance you'd be willing to part with one? Or two? Or tell me what kind of ceramic capacitor takes up C14 and C16 so my homie could replace them? That would be awesome! Thanks!

      @@backofficeshow I would sincerely appreciate it. I removed ceramic caps C14 and C16 and they just shattered. Label side too no less. Literally have no idea what they were and it's extremely difficult to find a cap map for this sort of thing. Lmao. To add insult to injury, the output still works without them, but the problem I was trying to fix worsened with their absence (so it was probably the cause). They're right by the RF out if that helps at all.

    Hi! I've got a Famicom that was already AV modded (altough not the best AV mod). It has jailbars, the video is noisy... (I mean, it's composite).
    Would this be an upgrade? I haven't found any videos comparing your AV Board to a regular AV mod so I wanted to ask
    I love my Famicom, but with those short controller cords and that video quality I don't play it very often. I'm not modding it for RGB because I don't want to cut the case nor lose the ejecting functionallity.
    Thank you if you read me, and thank you all for doing this project!

      Ctrl-alt-rees made a video upgrading his previously modded one: ruclips.net/video/W_idHOIHi0Q/видео.html and several people have done similar. It's hard to know what mod you have if it's super bad like you describe. If those jail bars are being caused from the PSU then the VAMP + a better PSU could help.

      @@backofficeshow Well, it's easy enough for me to do it, and if in the future there's a new RGB/HDMI mod for the Famicom that doesn't require sacrificing part of the case and ejecting mechanism, I could upgrade easily from this.

    The original Famicom power supply output 10 volts DC at 850 milliamps. Would that hurt this board that’s rated for 9 volts DC or would it be alright? I have a spare Genesis model 2/Game Gear power supply that outputs the same values but I’m unable to use it at the moment because the polarity is center positive. Also, I live in the US, does this board output NTSC 60 hz video or do I need to get a converter? I’m sorry if these are stupid questions.

    • @backofficeshow
      @backofficeshow  Год назад +1

      I would recommend getting a regulated 9v centre positive adaptor, 1000mA is plenty. Modern regulated adaptors are so much better and only a few dollars.
      The output should work fine on your US television.

    I'm always confused with all these Nintendo consoles. So the Famicom is the NES here in europe and Super-Famicom is Super-Nintendo?
    A really nice replacement solution! It's always quite satisfying fixing retro-hardware with modern parts. I recently replaced these huge, hot "power bricks" (plus two 230/110V converters!) of my Jaguar plus CD with a very small and always cold modern twin PSU. The best you can do for the Jag!
