- Here's a brief description of what I'm looking for when trying to locate my favorite places to hunt... old home sites! We'll go on a brief hunt at a familiar location too. Enjoy!
Hello matt!!! You mentioned something I’ve never heard anyone else on RUclips mention.... and that is look at the trees! I’m a forester up here in PA, and you are 100% correct when you mention to look for those old ones. That’s always been my go to when looking for old sites, those trees have a story to tell if you know what your looking for. I’ve thought about doing a video on “how to read trees” when detecting. Best of luck buddy & HH!
Wow - that's so cool! Reading the trees is a huge deal for me. Sometimes I'll even look for indentations in the ground where a tree used to be. The roots rotted away and the ground sunk down a little. Great spots to check! HH
Great advice and tips for finding old homesites Matt. I certainly look for many of those signs you mentioned. 😉 Nice pocket watch frame, harmonica reed, and General Service Eagle Cuff Button 👏👍👏 Great Job Matt. Happy Hunting My Friend 😀
I have the same what is it pendant in pretty good shape. Dug it in Boring Md along with civil war button, pistol, and much more. Liked the video. THANKS!
Great tips and advice Matt! Congrats on the general service button & good to see you finding another harmonica reed. It's been awhile. I hope all is well with you! Thanks for sharing brother! GL, HH, and as always.. DIG ON!
Great job! Those are some great relics! I love that general service button !

Hey Matt!! Just found your channel, while looking at historical Alamance County vids. I'm a huge history nut, love any and everything about history. And for the past year, I've become more interested in metal detecting. So just wanted to say Thank you for all the great tips that you share!!! Have a great day, and Happy Hunting!!!!😊
Thanks for the kind words, Amy! The "history bug" snuck up and bit me good - been lucky enough to make some really nice recoveries. HH!

Really good information and tips Matt. I have been swinging my new Equinox and doing very well with it
It is a pretty amazing detector. I pre-ordered the 800 on the 1st of October and just got it 3 weeks ago.

Great info for someone like me just getting into detecting. Thanks for the tips.
Welcome to the hobby, Rick! Thanks for watching and commenting. Happy hunting!
Thanks Matt for that helpful info going to have to bite the bullet here very soon...
Also they use to grow trees for their pasture area to attach their fencing to
Great info. Ty!
You did great!
Hey digger I have that small round broken piece you ask at end of clip if anyone knows what it is. I dont know what it is but the one I dug up here in Md. Is in very good condition. Dug it up bottle digging a early 1800 house.Got alot of good stuff out of that pit.Did you ever find out what it is?
Cool Finds
Thanks for the video Matt. A few questions: how do like the Deus so far, does it work that good in iron and does it get decent depth? Also is it fairly easy to learn for a country boy from NC? Thanks again Matt...
Hi Gary - I really like my Deus. It fits perfecting into the type of hunting I do. Excellent depth, great in iron, and super light weight design keeps me in the field longer. It is certainly more complex than a typical "starter" unit, but I caught on after a few months. Learning curve is slightly longer than most machines. HH!
Nice. I live near Randleman just South of Greensboro. Don't know if you're nearby. I did some prospecting this weekend also. Saturday morning was just beautiful time for hunting. Got permission for a couple other sites including one that had an old railroad cutting through it. Looking forward to some great hunting this Spring/Summer.
So do you just run around the woods looking for signs or is there a method
After permission has been secured, if there are no obvious signs of an old dwelling, the first place I look is any high ground near a fresh water source. Even small creeks can be enough to attract attention. I turn my detector on with no discrimination so I can listen for iron. That's a good sign when you hear iron - (old nails).
This I great
Nice!
Hi i am in gastonia nc . Thanks for the great info. What part of the Tarheel are you in.
Used to live in the Raleigh area, but relocated to GA in 2015. Decided to leave the channel name because "Peach Tree Diggin" just didn't sound quite right. ;-)
Good job!
I have a guess on that thin round piece you found. I think it may be a brooch that once held a tin type photo. Maybe a memorial photo pin. www.cowanauctions.com/lot/civil-war-tintype-brooch-of-a-union-officer-180539/
