I went there in the HEAT of the summer, immediately after high school graduation. You are probably going in the best time. You won't have to worry about trasitioning from boiling heat to freezing temperatures. I had a BLAST!! Think of this to help you get through: "What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger" Also, "Pain is only weakness leaving your body" My Drill Sergeants quoted that like a mantra on a daily basis, almost. Learn to love it!!
thank you so much for this video. my daughter left monday for Fort Sill for Army basic. Ive been so lost as to what she is doing. i appreciate you doing this video.i miss her so much.
Ma'am, thanks for serving and good info. A little bit off from my time at Ft Knox in '85, but doesn't seem too different. I moved to a different branch in '86 but Basic Training at Know did help me alot when it came to boot camp. lol- you eff up you'll be pushing Fort (insert name here). Keep the Oath and rock on, young lady!
Fire Guard is basically where a couple of soldiers in each bay have to stay up for 2-4 hour increments every night, from lights out to wake up, and pretty much clean the bays and basically make sure everything is safe and nobody is going AWOL or anything. Shifts are rotated, and it works out okay. You get used to it.
The advice I can give you is Active Army gets you way more benefits for you and your family. Army Nat'l Guard is just as good if you are not in it for the full commitment, but it is VERY hard to transfer from Nat'l Guard to Active Army. It's easier to do it the other way around. Good luck in your endeavors, HOOAH!!
don't be scared once you get there its not as bad as it seems trust me thats how i was at first too. all you have to do is do what your told and show up at the right time in the right uniform and you cnt go wrong :)
@Alexxis6948 no one fainted while getting there shots, but a couple of females did have allergic reactions to the pennicillin . We did have two females faint one night when a DS came in for a bed check. they were both dehydrated and shocked i guess. you dont get yelled at for it, but the DS did yell about the situation because they had to deal with it and get them to the emergency room. as far as anything that happens when getting your shots , though, the medics take care of you.
I know what you mean. seem's that they went soft. So glad your doing fine there.. Army life is not bad at all. keep your head up and be strong. This is the best days of your life! I know!
Yes, and I know because I have gone through BCT. If your hair color is not a natural color, you MUST dye it to your actual hair color. It devastated alot of girls who had dyed blonde hair or other colors when they were actually brunettes or red heads, or w/e. So you cannot escape it. DS's can easily tell what is dyed hair, especially because they will not let you purchase anything to keep your hair a different color than your own natural color. Anymore questions and I will be willing to help :)
@snoopskii i packed verrry lightly, unlike some other people. i believe the packing list says bring a change of clothes, but you only need the clothes on your back. thats all i can really think of, just look at my packing list video. everything i packed i do believe i used, but i repurchased most things. i only brought one lock, but you need two.
as hard as they make it seem, they are very understanding that you are new to the military so they wont expect you to be able to run two miles without walking just yet. They do however, expect that you improve throughout the training, which you will! :) I would recommend getting a lot of running in because you will be doing it all the time.
sam way it works in civilian life, you're required to keep something in your pocket at all times though, kinda like a part of your uniform. Just make sure you take care of it before a ruck march or something. they always gave us a ten minute latrine break after chow and randomly throughout the day you can use the latrine. on the range they have port o pottys and such.
I was in BCT during the summer so we had to wear the shorts. I gave myself a seconds shave. Not enough to have a smooth shave, but just enough so that it wouldn't obviosly show. It gets tricky though and you have to learn to shave fast. I didn't shave every morning however. I would only shave every three days or even longer.
they have a green menu, yellow menu. and red menu, but its all up to you making smart decisions. theres a salad bar always, and you can almost guarantee to have chicken as a choice everyday, the dfac foood is actually pretty good though .
i would highly suggest taking a book bag, all black if possible. the only book bags in regs are the digital camo and black (no logos). Idk about a gym bag though .
In reception, if you are just sitting there, pull out your blue book. Memorize the Soldiers' Creed and the Army Song. I was stuck in reception at Ft. Sill for two months. I learned the ins and outs of reception. I probably saw close to 600 soldiers ship while I was there. Try not to become a holdover, its terrible because you do the same thing everyday. Sit on the bleachers and basically become the DS little helper. If you need any advice, I'd be glad to help.
the only one that even phases you is the penicillin shot, which realllly makes your butt sore. the other ones dont even phase you after that one (you get that one first) . some people have allergic reactions to it though . there are VERY rare cases where people get paralyzed, we've had a couple here since i've been on fort sill.
The Drill Sergeants at reception have to get everyone acclimated quickly through a process they call Soldierization. They literally go hard-core to toughen you up mentally and prepare you for what's to come.
In red phase we did shower drills which is where you're naked in a line waiting to hop in the shower. each shower was like 30 secs long. Just enough to hit the "hot spots" as my ds said. a normal shower is like 5 mins. & they let you go to the latrine after chow and at random points in the day they'll say 10 min latrine break. at the range you can go whenever & at the different obstacle courses theres portopottys randomly so you can go whenever . there was only one time i almost peed my pants.
@thatmexicankristine ofcourse Kristine, you know you're my boo love ! its so hard making a video for reception, its such a blur. haha i kept laughing to myself when the new drill sgts were surrounding us. i didnt realize how serious stuff was about to get...lmao.
you do get to shave in basic, during your personal time. probably not initially because you'll be doing shower drills where you literally get a 30 second shower, but eventually your personal time gets extended and you can take 5 mins, then 8 and so on. just learn to be speedy. but truthfully, everyone basically stops shaving at one time or another. my platoon wasnt allowed tweezers either :/
Any information on what we do when we're on our periods? (Do we buy tampons when we buy the other items, are they provided 24/7, are we excused to use the restroom, etc.?) Thanks for any feedback! :)
Nope, i havent done anything active practically my whole life. i just started going to the gym roughly a year before i left. but i had to loose some weight before going in. its definitely possible.
They have new, slightly less bulky glasses you will be able to wear, as well as inserts you can put into your eye protection with your prescription. They fog up alot though :(
after basic is done, you get family day and graduation day, and people start shipping to ait the night of graduation. and no, not everyone graduates. but the percentage of nongrads is very slim, maybe 5 outta the whole battery.
@thatmexicankristine wahhhh ?! what male fainted !?! i missed that part, haha. my but was just hurtin sooo bad i wasnt even concerned with anyone else, lmao.
@Alexxis6948 No females fainted, it was the males! One male just hit the floor right before going in to get his penicillin shot, and after that, at least 3 other males started saying, "I'm feeling nauseous, I need to sit down and breathe for a bit." lol The females hold up pretty well during immunizations:)
I was surprised, the food at basic in great lakes was really really good O_O It felt like a buffet, except we couldn't talk and we had to study our general orders when we were done XD
does all the uniforms and laundry bag and stuff come out of your first paycheck or do u pay for more uniforms or what? how many of each do u get? can u get more?
you will wear BCG's however it depends on your co, I had to wear stupid shit like eyepro where you still have correctable lenses for that, you get issued i believe 2 or 3 insertable corrective lenses that fit into whatever gear they give u to wear over your eyes.
I don't thin you were in yet because you were by Reyes I think. But yeah, some guy a few lines ahead of me hit the floor HARD and right after that a few of the guy started saying, "I'm feeling really dizzy and light headed. I'm going to pass out." So the medics and civilian staff started sitting them down and handing out ice packs. Too funny:D muahahahaha!
now what will they do to you if youre on your menstrual cycle? do they go easy on you? i feel like this is must-know thing for me if im going to do this because my cycle is pretty bad. (too much information, i know haha)
I take my Asvab test this week, I wanted to ask you what do the girls wear to run or exercise ? Do they have to wear their uniforms and boots? Or can we wear sneakers n shorts? I am a nerve reck im soooooooo scared but anxious bc i have been wanting to do this for years but couldn't bc of my daughters but now my husband is ready to be a stay at home father and i can finally follow my dream =) also how often will i be able to talk to my kids on the phone while basic training?
This doesnt have much to do with reception, but i was wondering how long do you get to shower? and what all did you have to do? and what are the showers like? lol I'm just wondering since im leaving soon and i wanted to know if i should train myself for it now lol
Don't worry people she's alive and you will be too. The Army now is even easier and easier. My brother when thru 11B at Benning in 2010 and called me every Sunday from his cell phone. It's a New Army and easy for anyone..to much has changed since I joined damn.. Neways it's a job, a profession and a lifestyle just give it everything you got and don't act like your a fool or on the block and you'll be fine. Even in the older army most of us enjoyed basic, lol the Drill choking someone out was fu
cont hat is one of the ongoing debates that female cannot be assigned in combat zones. WHINING is not allowed in the military and if you do not understand why this training is required, please don't enlist as fellow soldiers/members depend on you to carry your weight. You did a good job by the way and I have seen some really bad female perspectives. ebee228
Im studieng to take the asvab right now and i watched a video where they were screaming at some of the people.. it kind of scared me i am very sensitive ! :/ but i also know that a ton of people do it.. and this is a great oppurtunity for me to start my life .is it that bad?

That's something I've been wanting to know too...
Yes they do.

Fire watch. You stand post for an hour (or more at the command) on rotation to ensure there are no safety issues or fire.
don't be scared once you get there its not as bad as it seems trust me thats how i was at first too. all you have to do is do what your told and show up at the right time in the right uniform and you cnt go wrong :)
carry around tampons or pads and use them as needed. you can use the latrine often.
wow okay thanks 4 the heads up when getting all of those stuff but i would like to know more about how fast you getting processed for you gears.
@Alexxis6948 no one fainted while getting there shots, but a couple of females did have allergic reactions to the pennicillin . yes, girls can get fades too! as long as it's not "fadish" or too stylish when you're on duty

I'm not really nervous or anything.just a little. but this makes me feel alooooot better about it
"what is this fire you're putting in my body?" smh lol thank you for your vids Ms. Shaine!!
@oversholder good catch, you're right . I just put on my ACU top, actually , for these videos. The fingernail polish is def out of regs .
Right now its suuuuper hott, but the training is good. Basic Training is no where near the idea that people have in their heads. its pretty fun .
Thank you!I leave very very very soon. im scared/excited....
you're welcome :)
@FreckledSoldier yes, i wore my civilian glasses up until the day we shipped and they gave us our BCG's.
and you're welcome (:
My daughter is at FT LEONARD WOOD and her reception was 10 days long. RIDICULOUS!
they have a green menu, yellow menu. and red menu, but its all up to you making smart decisions. theres a salad bar always, and you can almost guarantee to have chicken as a choice everyday, the dfac foood is actually pretty good though .

im glad i could help (:

Did you just wear civilian glasses during your time in reception?
The Drill Sergeants at reception have to get everyone acclimated quickly through a process they call Soldierization. They literally go hard-core to toughen you up mentally and prepare you for what's to come.

if you "ship to fort sill" on the 11th you get to reception on the 11th and probably start processing on the 12th. reception generally takes a week.

there are some stipulations with that, some people didnt have to get certain shots . im not exactly sure though
yes, only if you're not allergic
Where two people every hour stay up and basically make sure no one is messing around or doing anything dangerous.
No, there are train tracks you have to go over to get to the basic training area.
leaving in june!!!
Any information on what we do when we're on our periods? (Do we buy tampons when we buy the other items, are they provided 24/7, are we excused to use the restroom, etc.?) Thanks for any feedback! :)
I get shipped to Ft. Sill in 3 weeks!

@thatmexicankristine wahhhh ?! what male fainted !?! i missed that part, haha. my but was just hurtin sooo bad i wasnt even concerned with anyone else, lmao.
What kind of under garments can we bring and do they have to be a specific type of color?
Hey, so I'm a female and rock short hair as you can see . Would I then have to get it cut as a males or still as a females??
Question: Did they lock up your sports bras and undergarments and make you purchase new ones from the PX? Do I need to bring a change of clothes?
I leave August 14 for Oklahoma.
@Alexxis6948 No females fainted, it was the males! One male just hit the floor right before going in to get his penicillin shot, and after that, at least 3 other males started saying, "I'm feeling nauseous, I need to sit down and breathe for a bit." lol The females hold up pretty well during immunizations:)
what type of bag did you take like how big does it have to be or can be? can you take a gym bag or do you have to take a like a back pack?
I was surprised, the food at basic in great lakes was really really good O_O It felt like a buffet, except we couldn't talk and we had to study our general orders when we were done XD
Same, I mean I can tolerate it but it's not something I'd choose to eat. But, it's either eat that or go hungry right?
@ssjf20 what battery are you in ?
good luck:)
No, no one used an inhaler. I dont think you're allowed in if you need an inhaler.
Bring a black or ACU print book bag.
I am shipping to Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri in 2 weeks. Did she enjoy her time there?
does all the uniforms and laundry bag and stuff come out of your first paycheck or do u pay for more uniforms or what? how many of each do u get? can u get more?
you will wear BCG's however it depends on your co, I had to wear stupid shit like eyepro where you still have correctable lenses for that, you get issued i believe 2 or 3 insertable corrective lenses that fit into whatever gear they give u to wear over your eyes.
@TheBryt17 you dont take the shot.
so if i have highlights in my hair do i have to get them out? like go to my natural color?
a pain that wouldnt go away. it felt like somebody punched me hard in my ass,
are females allowed to have like boy short hair cuts? i was told it has to be at your shoulders if we wanted it cut
I don't thin you were in yet because you were by Reyes I think. But yeah, some guy a few lines ahead of me hit the floor HARD and right after that a few of the guy started saying, "I'm feeling really dizzy and light headed. I'm going to pass out." I was wondering, could you get all of the required shots before you go if you bring the papers to prove it?
Shipping to Ft. Sill March 3rd
did anyone use an inhaler in basic that u know of? or were they issued one?
can you wear a simple black head band?
I take my Asvab test this week, I wanted to ask you what do the girls wear to run or exercise ? Do they have to wear their uniforms and boots? Or can we wear sneakers n shorts? I am a nerve reck im soooooooo scared but anxious bc i have been wanting to do this for years but couldn't bc of my daughters but now my husband is ready to be a stay at home father and i can finally follow my dream =) also how often will i be able to talk to my kids on the phone while basic training?

COOPER! look'n good baby!
With the shots, are there any side effects to them... i'm not big on ingections
They allow you to keep tampon/pads with you and they give you bathroom breaks so you can do whatever it is you need to do.
Fort Sill reception? What bay were you in?

Full exam

it kind of scared me i am very sensitive !
