I agree with everything you say, but to get even better results, you should try to connect an XLR cable to the Shure SM58 and hook it up to a recording device or mixer, amp and speakers. The difference is very noticeable!
I have in fact used an SM58 as a hammer on one occasion, and then turned around and used it on-stage. It's very effective in both applications! It shines particularly well when you can open up your preamp a bit, which allows the top end to really come through and balance out the warmth of the low end.
When I only had one mic SM58 and a four track I would do the same. Put it between the top of the kick drum shell and Tom's about 2ft away and it sounded great on an old tascam porta 02. I even did bass and drums on one track by placing the bass cab at roughly same distance. All recorded on my bedroom. 58 and 58 are the two most undervalued mics ever. Never ever fale too sound like the original sound source.
Thanks for this video. I just got an SM58 yesterday. I mainly play guitar and in my new band I also take on vocal duties (punk rock shouting)… oh boy, wish me luck!
Thanks for your informative video! All aspects covered nicely. I got this very recently for home recording. I have also purchased pre Rig Id to connect it to my mobile to sing on Smule app.
Hello, I have it now, sm58.. Mate but any idea how to get it's input signal boosted? (Am trying to record my acoustic finger plug style, but the input signal is significantly low)
@@Akshay_Vocals yes! The 58 is a dynamic mic and therefore doesn’t use phantom power and is great for loud recording like directly into a speaker cabinet or singing directly. But yes I actually found a great answer for myself, is an inline preamp. I've also heard of something called a cloud lifter and believe it may be a type of inline preamp. But, I got a DM1 Dynamite from sE Electronics. It was right at about $99.00. It looks like just a connection piece of equipment with a male end on one side and female on the opposite. So I plug the male end directly into my 58 and then plug the mic cable into the female end. It honestly looks like a little stick of Dynamite. It immediately made my signal pop up in gain and helped in recording my acoustic instruments immensely.
Thanks Sweetwater! I need a good microphone for recording voice in untreated rooms, for radio spots. I almost overlooked this option when I was looking at more expensive fancy options.. would the SM58 with the windscreen for pops be a strong solution for me?
Hey, Cory! The SM58 will do an admirable job, but it will definitely lack that "booming" quality you're looking for out of broadcast-specific mics like the Shure SM7B or the EV RE20 / RE320. In my opinion, you'd be better served by those. Hope that helps, and thanks for reaching out! Corey Elliott, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1242, corey_elliott@sweetwater.com
All fine and dandy, Mitch; yes, the SM58 is overall a great microphone. However, it is a dynamic microphone. When I plug it into my Bose S1 Pro, the VOLUME that comes out is, well, pretty piss poor! And the S1 Pro does NOT have Phantom Power support so I cannot use gadgets like a Fethead or Cloudlifter. Anyhow, just a few days ago I found out about Lo-Z to Hi-Z transformers. Shure makes one, the A85F. So I took the plunge and purchased one for $21 from youknowhere. :) The transformer converts the XLR of the microphone into a 1/4" TS jack. Wow, what a delightful improvement! I cannot give a percentage improvement, but I can just say it is truly impressive. Sweetwater only sells a Whirlwind Little IMP transformer for $19 but I thought I could trust the Shure brand as I have three SM58 mics. I'm so glad I didn't waste money on a Condenser Mic. And here I've been, frustrated for a long time about the low mic volume so I've been using a mixer to get a significantly more mic volume using the S1 Pro. What is interesting is that on the S1 Pro, whether I chose Mic or Guitar on the switch, the volume is the same. And oh, one last thing: I don't plan to use this transformer on a mixer: there is no need for that.
Help real real newbie here I want to purchase this mic I just like singing as a hobby I’m not a professional I’m not recording but I do want to know how to connect this mic like what do I need to make it work which cable should I buy, do I need an amplifier or a mixer?
I'm not a pro, but here's what I would recommend : If you don't want to record, then you need an amplifier to... Well... Amplify your voice Shure sm58 works with a XLR cable, so you need speakers that are compatible. The best thing to do if you don't know that much is to go to a music store and ask a seller "I just bought a sm58 and I'd like an amplifier to make it work, what do you recommend?" I personnaly bought an Alto Uber pa (it's an example I honestly don't know what are the best amplifiers), it's around 170€ and you can connect microphones like the sm58, guitars, synths... You can also (and it's cool for karaoke if you like singing as a hobby) connect a phone or tablet via Bluetooth to play songs or instrumentals while you're singing. Hope this can help you, and enjoy singing 👍
Been struggling to record picked acoustic guitar with the sm58. I'm getting really thin, cheap sounding audio. I'm guessing recording an acoustic guitar with a dynamic mic is a no-no?
No man ,,, your right ... But a simple mic-preamp ,,, will give you control over the tone & gain ... I've got a strong condenser mic 🎤 ,,, & it's hard to work with the power ... So get it on ... I like the process ,,, doing it many times is no problem ... D
Hi, Sav! Thanks for your interest. You could absolutely use the SM58 for livestreaming, but you would need an audio interface to connect it to your computer or smart device. If you don’t have one already, the PreSonus AudioBox Go is a good affordable option that will work with Mac, PC, iOS, or Android: www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/AudioBoxGo--presonus-audiobox-go-2x2-usb-c-audio-interface Feel free to contact me directly with any further questions, and thanks again! Thanks for reaching out! It’s difficult to say for sure what might be causing that issue with limited information, but the first couple of things to try would be messing with the gain on your mic and the distance that you’re holding it at. If your whistles are quieter than your singing voice, the mic just might not be picking it up. If that doesn’t work you might have better luck with a more sensitive microphone, as well. I hope this helps! Reach out if I can help, Connor Smith, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1793, connor_smith@sweetwater.com
I just purchased an SM58 from Sweetwater (love your service, warranty, etc.). Here's my question: I have a Rockville RPB2x10 PA system. When I use the included microphones, the volume levels are good. But, when I plug in my new Shure SM58 microphone, the same gain levels produce a very low volume. I increase the gain and master volume on the mixer, but the SM58 volume output through the speakers is still low. Can you let me know what might be happening and what to do about it?

I swear by my sm58's and sm57's. They've been the standard for years, and are basically bulletproof.
No audio device has stood the test of time like the SM58.

Or you can just get a beta 58a which balances that on its own.

I have also used an sm58 as a mono room mic for drums. :)

Probably not the best mic for that situation 😐🤷♂️
Much like the SM58, that leather jacket has also been around since 1966. Own it man.

Would be most useful to hear Mitch's voice using the SM58. What is the mic he's using?
should mention unscrewing the dome when mic-ing up guitar cabs/amps
SUPER INFORMATIVE!
Question,
When MICing snares upside down like that, what keeps the mic from sliding out of the clip?
Very encouraging. I'd thought a gd mic must cost a lot.
Looking good, man!
SM58 was my 1st mic and used it on everything. Great all-around mic.
