This was excellent in just about every way, despite their using the scores. The piece is so pivotal and even sets up the tragedy because of Seymour's insecurity and not understanding that Audrey loves him for himself. Gyllenhaal does such a great job of communicating that insecurity and his vocal acting matches the physical acting.Sometimes actors who take on singing roles just act with their faces and bodies and neglect acting through the singing as well, but he'd be convincing even if this were just an audio capture.
I always hated that they only did a rendition of this song in the movie and not the whole song but damn, Mean Green Mother from Outer Space was a good replacement.
***** Gotcha. Still kind of bothers me though, as with other things in this show. Since all of them have been written off as part of the concert thing, I guess I just prefer full-on stage shows.
+OptimusPhillip I also think it's because in the scenes where it's just talking, it gives them something to do rather than looking really awkward. Notice that in the more movement scenes/songs and whenever the urchins get up, they put it down. I think it's so they have something to do if that makes sense
1. It's a concert/staged reading, holding a book isn't unusual and the people going to see it know it won't be a full on production. 2. This particular production had an 8 day rehearsal process, the fact that they learned as much as they did (and did it as well as they did) is remarkable
This is hands down the best Greek Chorus ever to hit a broadway stage. It's something about how the vocals just really come together with those three.
Taran Killam is a gift to this world.
I might have loved to see his Seymour.
This is exactly the kind of passion I like to see in the Meek soliloquy. Easily the best part.

at 5:32 Are they applauding the actor or the awesome crescendo that just gave be goose bumps from the orchestra? Either way, awesome.
It looks like they're applauding the Greek Chorus' costume change.

Wow. Gyllenhaal signs well.
He sings well, too! ;)
Taran Killam is really good!
Okay, why do they not have their lines memorized? I'm pretty sure that's an important part of concerts, too.
